Title: CSM Pfalz Dr.1
Post by: Alexis on July 08, 2020, 11:54:25 AM
With all the talk about Triplanes and sure it sparked something within and I pulled this out of the stash . I started this along time ago and it ended up being a shelf queen , but her ruling days over the shelves are over . Both insides of the fuselage halfs are really thinned done and the pit is under construction , it is all scratched built minus the instrument panel which is from the kit . It ended up being a queen when I realize the the forward part of the frame/ fire wall is short . So it's time to get her done !

Terri,
Looks like this will be another "Watch and Learn" opportunity for the rest of us.
Thanks for really mixing things up around here, never a dull moment, that's for sure.

This is a brave decision but I know you have the skills to magic an excellent model out of the very unpromising set of parts.
I've no doubt you'll do better than I did 20 years ago, when I was just glad to get it finished!

Thank you for digging this little beauty out of the stash, T!  It's so good to see another being built.  You're off to a spectacular start.  I did this one a while back.

Well I just hope that this thread will be entertaining enough for you all .  :) Still need to find all my ref's on this . I have no idea where it has been placed so got some digging to do be fore the weekend .

Frank ,  I too would like to see a new release of Dr.1 kit ..well all of them by CSM , they have excellent subject matter .

Thanks for sharing your builds guys and Bud for the link , I remember your build  :)

Will have some progress this weekend , but for now it's coffee break ! ( with a bowl of cherries )

Okay , over the past few days it was getting in touch with the subject once again . Also found some of my misplaced info but I still missing some  :o :o :o :o However , this will not stop me . The floor was only tack into place and that has been pop free. Still have the rudder bar to build . The frame work ended up needing a few of the joins re-glued . Over the years getting moved around didn't do it any favors . I really wish I had photos of how much resin was removed on the inside of the fuselage to get to this stage . The fuel and oil tanks I ended up redoing them rather then trying to fix the mishaps . Here is a shot of the frame fitted and the new tanks .

The kit tail planes are to thick and are under scale , but not by much . This will have to be thinned or new ones made .

The more I work away on the bits the more I didn't like the frame work and having the front end short was really putting a thron in my side .

Sooooo ... out comes a fresh sheet and new formers are made . The very rear I will reuse and the firewall/rear engine details . This is already set to the hole in the fuselage and an item I don't want to remake . But I did cut out a new one just in case . I did reuse part of the slanted former to make the former I missed last time  ::)

You're smart to take the easy way. Forcing the issue never ends well. So much easier to start anew than try to push it when your inner modeler is sending you warnings. You're going to be much happier this way and it will likely be less work with a better result than if you had tried to make the first interior work. I only wish my inner modeler had a louder alarm bell, (or I listen better ) Looks like you are off to a great start on the new interior.

I have never built a complete biplane in resin before, but the formula seems simple:
Resin = Extra work
You can do it!

And if the woman is happy , life is good for everyone !
Oh, then I don't want to know the opposite :o

Thanks Frank and Dan  ;D

Frank , resin kits really aren't all that different then plastic kits , but some do need a little extra attention and others and will challenge your skills .

Gaz , I have built a few balsa planes , but I could never get them to actually fly .  :-\

Small steps where made yesterday by finishing the clean up of the parts , sanding and test fitting each former to the inside of the fuselage and cutting the notches for the runners . Starting from the rear bulk head working my way forward . I cut the runners longer this time to allow for the curve and will trim once the fire wall is in place where it should be . I also took the time and added the engine mount frame to the back side of the firewall . This is set aside to full try before I add the other frame parts . While this is curing I started having a look at the engine . My kit came with the white metal one and was cast deformed . Trying to file this out was becoming a nightmare so I pulled a resin one out of the parts bin . ( old eduard kit ) Will not be using the PE push rods part doesn't fit on either engine away . So detail will be added .

Terri, if I'm not wrong the Pfalz Dr.I used a Siemens & Halske Sh.III
The same engine type was used on the Siemens-Schuckert D.III and since we have recently the Eduard kit there is also a very nice Brassin engine of this type available. I used on my Siemens-Schuckert and it's nice. It should be still available at some shops.

Frank , I have Eduards new tool SSW D.III along with their replacement engine and more then likely I will be using it . Thanks for sharing the links . It does fit inside the cowl with having to sand back the cylinder heads .

Here is the rest of the frame glued up and what she looks like inside the fuselage . There is still the top runners to add . These will be done once other detail is button up . I need some kind of room to work when building the control column and installing items .

Another step before I start going gun ho with adding more details the lower wing needs to be test fitted to insure that it will fit later on and not jump back with a few shocking surprises . The lower wing needs to get test fitted now with the frame work fitted in place . I did have a bit of sanding to do on the slanted formers around the lower corners and removing a fair bit of resin to the center section of the lower will and there is a hole which will need to be patched . That happened when I first start this build .  I have success ! the wing fits in place ! But I do have just a tad more tweeking on the former with the instrument panel on the top side of the fuselage . I have a small gap at that location . Instrument panel is only tacked in place so this task will only take a few minutes .

Gary , yes I do wear mask when sanding resin and some times when scraping depending on the type of resin . Some is very hard while other is more like a bar of soap . In that case I when a mask .

Rick , it is still going to while before this one is button up , still lots and lots to do , but I'm getting there . With more rain in our forecast for the weekend it looks like I will be getting a bit more time at the bench .

Work continues at a slow pace or it may seem , but this was a few hours well spent . I made a new floor for the old one was now to small . I re-installed the carb air intakes and now I know why my measurements were way off so may years ago . ( I had them installed the wrong way  ::) ) . The strap on the furl and oil tank is fashioned out of left off PE seat belt buckle and tamiya tape . I also made another ammo bin . Rudder bar is a Toms Model Works from their German PE set . I added a nut with a pin making it easier to mount later on . I did build up the surface with super glue a bit so it doesn't look so flat . A bit of primer will tell me if I need more . Rest of the framing is added to the left side . And this is where I'm at now . Still a fair bit of details left , control column , rest of the instruments and other details , but the frame is getting close to painting . I also had a little help on keeping my chair warm  :)

Stephen , it is what is and no reason to apologies .  ;) Follow when you can . So far the build is going well and once the pit is finished the rest should good a little quicker .

Thanks Rick  :)

Richie , the ammo box doesn't have a strap . Those are the fuel and oil tank . Yeah he his grumpy . I poked him for the photo op , waking him from his nap .

Bit more progress , new tail feathers have been cut and sanded to shape so far . And that is all for this weekend .

With it being hot and muggie progress is slow at the bench but I'm at the stage now where the framing can get painted . Control column is done minus it's details which can get added afterwards . Seat rails are button up as well with the rest of the framing . I'm glad I did these last . Gave me more room for test fitting . I also made a cushion for the seat out of scrap plastic card with edge pipping and the buttons are HO scale rivet heads . Tail planes got split in two and the rib tape replaced with thin strips of tamiya tape . This will be sealed in with a coat of future .

Really like that Terri, was wondering about Tamiya tape for rib tapes and possibly other details.

It's been incredibly hot here too, until we get a return to more typically English weather I won't be getting much done either. We're much more accustomed to rain!
Title: Re: CSM Pfalz Dr.1
Post by: Alexis on August 04, 2020, 09:52:50 AM
Nice to know that we here in the great white north are the only ones with high heat and slows down . Was able to move forward with the frame painted and the start of painting the details . Lower control cables are installed and the front lower cross bracing . I changed the colour of the seat and went with alum with black leather padding on the inside . Cushion still has bit of weathering . Seat belts are from the spare box . Rudder bar is from the spare box as well , it's more accurate to the Dr.1 . This is from a junk Eduard Roland C.II . The two side panels still need their details with a bit of plumbing for them as well . Still have a fair bit of details to add and make ! But I'm slowly making head way with the build .

Thanks guys for dropping by and leaving support  :) Richie , I use Tamiya tape for making other details as well . Also works great for seat belts too .

Thanks for checking her out guys and the kind comments  :) Cooler weather is coming so progress should be smoother sailing . In the mean time I'll keep planning out the next stage of details .

Hey Carl , yes she is cool and one of my favorite Pfalz aircraft , but their was only 12 built and flown more for home defence problems with the rotor engine slowed it's progress in deleveloping further - ending in losing the Contract to Fokker's Dr.1

As far as I know CSM is the only one who has it in 48 scale  . Their is a few 72 scale kits but I can't recall them . A few years back Aviatik was planing on releasing in 32 scale , but nothing came of it . I hope CSM releasing this kit but as a new tooled one .

Weather is starting to behave and it's a lot cooler outside ! Was actually enjoyable sitting , relaxing , working away !

The control column flight controls are done as well as the rudder bar . While starting to paint those details my paint brush rubbed against the instrument panel leaving a nice black line . Trying to clean it off quickly was an epic fail . So the base colour has been replied . Glad I did have the instruments already in place and it's other details . I'm not happy with the hand grips or the cables for the gun triggers and trottle and will redo these again .

Very unusual cockpit, since the huge engine requires a big front. And in the back the fuselage becomes surprisingly slim.
Let's see how it will look in the halves.
Well done, Terri!

Thanks Rick  :) But I will pass on that . I started doing that to the one in the stash which became a shelf queen . My first go at 32 scale . It will get finished in my own scheme this winter when those cold months set in .

Instruments are done and this was a challenge . I'm missing a few of my punches  :o ! I spent a few hours trying to find them and got no where . So I had to use one just a tad smaller and for the reaaly small instruments on the side panels I opt for decals instead since I have nothing smaller for punching .... I ended up losing the PE part for the compass mount . Have no idea what happened to it was even on my hands and knees checking the floor . Sieben even give me weird looks ! ;D The compass is ready to go with a bit of trimming on the tail part and once in place bolt heads will be added . A grease pump was fashioned up quick . Almost forgot about this . The instrument panel it shelf is to big , something I want to change a while back and now it's to late for that with out doing a fair bit of damage and will have to make the control column all over again . It is out of wack . I just notice this today !!!!! So it will remain as is and I do like how it looks so far . Once these other details are added the gun mounts are next and rest of the parts then she can get closed up .

My earlier planning on how the lower wing and cowl will fit paid off and glad I planned this out ahead of time . There is a gap on the top of the fuselage but the cowl lines up perfect so it is a head scratcher . This was filled with a piece of half round and sanded back . I started filling the seems with the first round of Mr Surface 1000 .

This is shaping up really well Terri. Forward thinking and planning always pays off in my experience, although it is not always possible to avoid filler! However if the parts fit closely that it good enough - filler deals with the remainder!!

Stephen.
Title: Re: CSM Pfalz Dr.1
Post by: Alexis on August 24, 2020, 08:51:20 AM
Thanks Stephen  :)

I do try to get the best possible fit and that can be challenging at times . The less putty the better  ;)

Since the forward fuselage is sanded so thing doesn't leave a lot of gluing surface for the cowl which is also thinned . So the front frame work sits 1mm past the resin fuselage . The inner cowl fits this perfectly giving me a second gluing edge for added strength . The cowl is almost ready for primer , still need to thin around the three lower cooling holes . The PE parts for the cowl side excess panels are to big . My PE parts bin might have something more suited if not will be making new ones .

I opened up a air bubble on the under side of the fuselage which was okay I still have some blending at the join line . I knew a head of time that the left side of the fuselage is 1. 3 mm shorter then the right side . It was easier to address this once the halves where finally joined at the hip  ;) A piece of square scraps was super glued in sanded then filled and sanded again . Middle wings have their slots opened up for the inter/struts

Rest of the parts are cleaned up but the Struts still need to be pinned and make the landing gear legs . These aren't included in the kit ( this production run ) . So I need to find something that will be suited for this . The engine is together waiting for the push rods . Which brings me to the end of the weekend progress report  ;)

ou guys are fantastic , thanks for the positive comments  8)

Carl , there was also the Pfalz D.IIIa triplane but never went into production same with SSW Dr.1 , that was a pusher/puller . I have spin models take on that bird and it is strange . AH had a few ones as well ...more I dig the more bizzare they are .

Frank , once the cowl id really thinned down ( very ruff casting ) there is plenty of room for Eduards engine , which now looks under scale to me , but the kit engine still doesn't fit without going super thin and in resin that isn't a good thing .

Digging through the parts bin I found a pair of struts which will do the trick . I don't have the right diameter of steel rod for making the struts . Did realize how long I'm actual on my tubing and rod . Going to have to replenish this . The axles will be cut off and replaced with brass rod . and by the look of it I just might scratch the alex wing as well . There is a fair bit of reshaping to do on the resin part .

It was kinda of a relaxing day at work so i figured I would carry that home and continuing on doing the same . I start the mods on the struts and will leave these taped down overnight so they cure as is . A new spreader is under construction . After thinking about what to do about the guns I really didn't want to be working with PE and sure don't want to rob a set out of another kit so I order a set of GasPatch's guns from Ultracast .

Still a bit more work to do on them and that is mostly sanding and reshaping with a few tea breaks in between .

Bud I figured that they would be the best choice which have the best detail blending perfectly with the detail of the engine and interior .

Whatever the hint was Gary , hope that it works well for you  :)

I sure hope so Rick , broken one while shaping it , repaired that only to have it break again . So this time around the repair should hold up better while the shaping takes place . I'm pleased on the direction they are going .

Metal pins for struts are always better than plastic if the parts are small. Takes longer but saves the risk of disaster later.

Stephen.
Title: Re: CSM Pfalz Dr.1

The Y does stand for yes Frank  ;)

Stephen , I always use metal for pins and replace plastic with metal . Even it it takes longer you are right that the end results are worth the effort .

That " hole " on the lower chin is now filled and sanded smooth . This was a two part affair by first filling the hole with scraps filling in more of the void and then putty was placed over top . The hinge slots on the fin are opened up . I didn't get to the primer stage yet . Still a bit of work to do on the struts and get the landing gear test fitted followed by assembly .

Thank-you Kevin and Fredrik , moving forward I will have to be very careful handling the fuselage . The resin is very very thin in a few areas and is now very prone to cracking at the join lines . I had to reinforce the top decking . Once the cowl is finally glued in place it will add pit more strength to it all . Working on the landing gear now and it is looking very promising on the first run of test fitting . Will have some more progress soon  :)

Rest of the PE parts are in place and everything is now ready for primer ! Cowl and engine have their alum applied and I also made a start on the wood parts .

I used a few PE parts from the parts bin for the underside of the top wing and around the carb intakes .

Hi guys ! Hey , thanks for the positive comments at this stage it is the only thing which is keeping the spirit alive .

The silvergary is sprayed . For this I mixed Tamiya sky grey XF-19 and flat alum X-16 with a bit of white . Tires got sprayed neutral grey . Bungee cords I painted Tamiya Deck Tan . Cockpit combing is still a work in progress , made a mess of it I did and ended up smearing some down the fuselage side and had to touch that up resulting in walking away and smoking a joint !

Feel much better now and the right side has been touch up . I'm hoping that it will blend in better once the finally sealing coats have been applied . Some of the seams didn't turn out over well this time around . But at this stage the resin is paper thin and can't with stand to much more sanding and lacquer thinner wiping away any excess will make the resin brittle ending in cracks .

Also didn't do any shading on the ribs . When the Baron test flew this it was still new so wouldn't show a lot of aging or wear . So weathering will be kept on the light side . Clear coating is finished as well and once this is dried it's off to decalling . While this drying detail painting engine is taking place and works on the prop laminations .

Now I see why you went to all the interior detail trouble. That is one wide cockpit opening. With the overall silbergrau paint scheme, the colors and details of the cockpit make the perfect contrast. This is going to be a model that grabs the eye.

You guys are awesome ! Thanks again  :)

Moving forward the decals are on and to my surprise they work very well after all these years . I had a few crack and lift resulting in touch up with black paint . I will let these dry overnight and seal them tomorrow . Detail painting on the engine is almost finished with a few more washes to apply and paint the fire wall , still haven't done that yet . Other then that this is as far as I got today . Also forgot to drill the rigging holes so extra care will be needed now with those .

Weekend comes to an end ...those four days went by really fast ! Didn't make a start on the rigging yet but I'm very close , very very close . Rigging holes still need to be drilled and the joys of making turnbuckles can begin . The wheels haven't been sealed yet nor the guns . These will get a flat coat for further weathering . The laminations did't turn out so shit hot and the prop was strip and sprayed Tamiya deck tan and will redo this . I also found my Copper State Prop Boss's so I can do this detail now . ! I used Flory's dark dirt for the wash and this was only added the the metal fittings and flight controls . The parts have been sealed with a satin finish to cut down on the shine and for the oil slight oil streaking on lower chin . So this is where I'm at now . I must admit that it is looking pretty dame good even with my errors  ::)

Two interesting points of view here I think. One is that if we simply ignore the mistakes made along the way, we're unlikely to improve. The second one is that despite the mistakes made during a build, one can truly see the bigger picture in the end and enjoy the model anyway!

As a spectator the second point is more relevant I think and your Pfalz is well worth looking at!

Today was spent finishing the weathering on the guns . I use graphite for this and work it into the surface . Starting with dark to light and then sealed with clear . Prop is also finished and did a different approach for the wood . After looking a photo's there seems to a lot of variations and I like the dark varnish . I mask off some laminations and used Vellejo woodgrain stain and brushed this over giving it two coats . Once dried the tape was pulled off and a few more coats got added . Sealed that and added the prop logo's . There is no prop boss included so I use one from a Copper State boss set . A small disk was punched and piece of hex rod was added for the nut . The center of this was drill and a piece for brass tubing was fix in the center . Rest of the rigging holes are drilled and my eye lets made , assembly is next  ;)

Title: Re: CSM Pfalz Dr.1
Post by: Alexis on September 14, 2020, 07:43:39 AM
Hi SP ,

I thought the same and even remove the pins from the wing and tried different angles checking the incidence and no it is the flaired in wing root sitting to low .

First thought was to saw it free but I figured that this would cause even more damage and with the fuselage walls already thin enough that idea was scraped .

After looking at it for what seemed hours I come up with and a stripe of 20 thou stock super glued in place . The basic shape was sanded and the seem filled on the top . Will that was drying the remaining resin wing root got got removed using round rotor bits . New stock was placed on the bottom and blending in . The middle wings now sit levelled to each other . ( don't mind my misbellyng  ;)

This needs to dry just a tad more clean up with some sanding and this part can get resprayed . This area will be masked off a little more on the square side . Masking tape pulled off the panel on the cowl side but that is a very easy fix .

Hi OM , yes sometimes it is the only way to go . If I had another decal set I would have strip the fuselage restarting from that point .

Okay Still moving forward I did have to replace the end of the wing on the left side . I over sanded while trying to clean up the super glue . That is als repaired and both areas have be masked and resprayed my Pfalz mix . This needs to dry and then clear coat again and I do hope that that will blend in .

A few years back it would have ended back in the box rejoining other shelf queens . I did the clear coating last night but haven't check to see how that turned out yet . A wash over a few deals then it can get sealed with a satin varnish . If no other hick ups present themselves I should have this wrapped up over the weekend .

Title: Re: CSM Pfalz Dr.1
Post by: Alexis on September 18, 2020, 12:30:13 PM
Thanks Ken  :)

Some kits are really off and the worst one in my stash is Toms Model Works Pfalz D.12 . The right side of the fuselage is really shorter than the left side . The right wing root is also smaller than the left side . That is going to be a challenge indeed when it hits the bench , but it will get built  ;)

Okay after checking the outcome on the clear coating the shad just doesn't match at all  :'( I knew this was going to happen and I'm rather down on this . It looks horrible !

Anyway moving forward the next detail I need to make is the cowl retaining thingy or what ever you call it . I also test fitted the tail feathers again . I still have to drill the holes for the pins on the new root and for the wing and these can get mounted .

Okay ,

This has really been getting under my skin in the worst way . If I keep moving forward and get it done . I would not be very proud of myself while at the same time presenting ...well not a real great build towards you guys . I sent a message to Edgar seeing if he still has any spares left for this kit , but I haven't heard anything back yet . While looking for spare decals for the DH-2 in case Rodens don't behave I ended up coming across spares that I could use for the Dr.1 covering all that needs replacing and even can read the weight tables !

The lower wings will get masked off and the PE parts removed and it will get sanded down , cracks filled again . Repaint her and start with the decalling . Only the fuselage will get redone so if the flying surfaces are a slightly different shade it will still be all good  :). I still have the same mix , made up a large batch  :) just need to recall what shade of grey I used for primer . The cowl will get redone as well it has gotten dinged up here and there  ::)

Left wing does have it's pins now and test fitted with the right in place and to my surprise it is still levelled with the right .

It was an afternoon well spent in front of the bench . Sanding , filling , more sanding I'm at the painting stage now . Last time around I had a hell of time trying to paint the cockpit leather padding . This time I sprayed first using Tamiya hull red . Once this is dry it should be easier masking . Also recall the shade of grey used for the primer . Tamiya Neutral Grey . I will have to respray the top side of the lower wings . There was no way around this part while blending this area in better which turned out rather well .

Hurra ! Decals are on ...well for the most part . Still have the tamdum lines but before I do that I took the time to remove the fire wall and re-enforce the inside along the top seem and where the cab struts fit . With the resin being so damn thin now I'm hot sure how long this will hold up . So here is to hoping on that . I do have too added 2mm to the front on the fuselage after removing the cowl for repaint as well .Super glue can be a bitch to clean ! This is a quick fit and will be easy on blending this in , but I  feel more comfortable knowing that it has added strength now .

Thanks Rick , but I don't think the rest will be smooth sailing . However ; I do feel that the worst is over and I will not be doing any more filling or sanding . I have had my fill on that . Everything lines up now that is good and shouldn't have anymore issue in on finally assembly .

Other then a clear coat and two more decals to go which will be tomorrows evenings goal I'm back on track and can finally continue with the rigging and mounting the middle wings .

Ta...da !

Thanks Rick for continuing to follow along on this hair pulling adventure and leaving positive feedback which is most appreciated  :)

I'm very pleased that it looks like nothing happened at all and I should have went a different way but lesson learn't which I'm 100% positive I will make on future builds  ;)

I have paged through your build and have to admire to your stick to it edness!  You have overcome some hurdles and continue to march to ensure an outstanding model is the outcome.  Good to see you continue on with this, a lesser person would have trashed it.  Looking forward to the next update.  This must be a CSM kit when they were still in Arizona as it's that tan resin.  He uses a grey resin now days.

Hi Mark ,

Thank-you for the kind comments . Yes , I bought this kit when Eric was the owner back in 2006 , with many more still in the stash .

That is what I like to see Terri - true grit when the kit resists going together properly. Please do not return it to the shelf - you have now done so much that it would be a real shame if is not completed. Looking forward to seeing it in the completed section.

Hi Stephen ,

It will be completed , the engine and cowl are ready to be installed now and then rest of the PE parts , do a pin wash , seal that and getting her together is all that is left .

Great to see you're still plugging away at this, Terri.

It looks worth the effort.

Thanks Oldman , in guess in the end it is all worth it !

The engine is mounted with the cowl and retaining strap and made on start on the pe parts . Few more to go . I did lose one of the mounting plates for the struts , so the underside rear struts will not have this detail , don't have a small enough punch to make a new disc . This will change in the future  ;)

Okay ....Was able to get the rest of the PE parts in place and a pin wash is applied . I'm setting this aside so the wash can fully dry overnight and do the sealing coat tomorrow . Then I'm right back to where I left off ....making turnbuckles and rigging and getting her finally put together !

Hi Kevin ,

yes , she starting to look like a plane once more and not something that look like it was in a horrible crash such as ...plane meet bench , bench meet plane and ....smash with a pair of giant green hands  yelling ...puniy German plane !

I'm shoot for on having the middle wings mounted by the weekend  ;)

Over the past few days work continued . Rigging lines at the lower wing root are now in place and the middel wings are mounted with inter struts . I haven't place any glue yet where the strut pass through the middle wing . This will give me a bit of wiggle room when mounting the top wing .

Top wing is just resting in place ...

Thanks for checking in Andonio . I would go as everything is fantastic , a lot of errors in this one ! ::)

She is on her legs and is now now armed ! Windscreen is a bit of mess but it is what it is . Now on to the top wing and making her officially a triplane .

Title: Re: CSM Pfalz Dr.1
Post by: Alexis on October 04, 2020, 11:20:11 AM
It is finally a triplane !

Top wing went rather well with only the front strut needing a bit of trim on both to get the top wing levelled to line of flight .
Rigging is just about finished , still have to slide the buckles in place and get them painted .
