Title: 1/48 Fairey Flycatcher *Finished*
Post by: Gisbod on June 01, 2020, 10:27:18 PM
Hello all,

Still no WW1 builds! But this is almost WW1, well rigging & two wings anyway.

Great subject though, I’ve always fancied one.

Armory models, not tried them before, it was released last year and I bought it at Scale Model World. The CAD drawings they released were awesome.

Comes in a sturdy box but - But on opening, I have to say it has a distinctly limited run feeling about it.  Lots of flash and every part will need cleaning up. No numbered parts on the sprues (a separate diagram in the instructions). Not an issue, but a slight inconvenience.

2 PE sheets.

Quite a bit of resin for the engine, and this looks nicely tooled (by a company called Jaguar I think).

6 colour schemes - decals look ok.

A mini clear acetate sheet for the windshield.

Surface detail is ok - but there are some curious wavy moulding marks across the wings (see photos). I’m hoping these don’t show through the paintwork.

I’ve started the cockpit and it’s not for the faint hearted! Tubular frame with numerous parts that are not a click fit! Requires a bit of patience to align it all. Also these very small, thin parts are a PITA to sand without breaking.

No colour call outs on the cockpit at all! Any guidance here welcome?

So, not overly impressed if I’m honest, but there’s no reason to suppose it won’t make up into a lovely model in the right hands (not mine, obviously!).

Anyway, pictures paint a thousand words...

Was wondering about this kit - had an uncle who would have been familiar with these machines. He flew a Blackburn Ripon amongst others. Sorry to hear it's a little disappointing in the box, but am looking forward to seeing how it turns out in your highly skilled hands.
Jaguar - isn't that the powerplant ie. the Armstrong Siddeley Jaguar?
A very nice selection of schemes. Which one are you going for?
Good luck!

Hi Mark,

Der... Obviously I realised that, just wanted to check you all knew it was the Jaguar engine! Well done  :-[

Don’t know yet re colours, I want to check I can get beyond the cockpit framing first!

Ryan, How you doing in lockdown? You may even get to finish a model?!

There really are a lot of strange aircraft out there... It's got a fairly peculiar look, don't you think? If those are the schemes you're choosing between I'd go for #5 or #6. Looking forward to more pictures!

No lock down for me, been at it (work) since this whole thing unfolded. As far as finishing a kit....I'm still in a state of perfection paralysis.

Hi Fredrik, Yes, I guess it is odd, but I’ve always liked it for some inexplicable reason! That’s odd re colours as I was leaning towards those two too. I haven’t looked outside the kit options yet... On the top wing there’s a bit of a ‘flying circus’ feel about all the schemes. I’ll post a pic later.

We have the same affliction Ryan. Every kit I finish I want to chuck in the bin and can’t wait to start afresh on the unobtainable goal of ‘perfection’. As much as I’m enjoying the 1/700 ship models, they’re about the worst thing possible for this as it’s ridiculously hard to make them look good in close up. If only I could go back to the good old days before macro photography...  :P

Quick update,

Here’s the colourful top wings on two of the colour schemes...

And I just about made it out the other side with the framed cockpit...

Tidy assembly Guy.

As far as the cure for perfection, you seem to have found it.

I'll PM you my address so you can send me some of this elusive elixir.

If only that were true Ryan!

I’ve been building like mad this year, churning out kits. I really enjoy the process, up until the last knockings when I realise it isn’t as good as I thought. I haven’t had a single one of those builds that I wanted to keep, they all just get chucked in a box. It’s just a shame that with all that effort, I haven’t got anything I want to show anyone or display... But, I do really enjoy my modelling still.. I can’t explain it really.

I’ve just finished another 1/700 ship - HMS Penelope. I put a huge effort in, but again, fell out of love with it after close photos. Got the Flycatcher box out and accidentally chucked the box lid onto HMS P - broke the rigging and masks, and I really didn’t even care. Perhaps I ought to see a shrink...

Anyway, got the ‘pit painted up and tbh she looks a lot better than I perhaps gave the kit credit for initially:

Ps thanks to Dave for the colour call outs! Great save, I probably would have done it green. Looks quite Art Deco to me!

Not that you can see much of the black interior! The belts are just from the bottom of the spares box, no idea where they’re from but look ok I think.

Fits a bit clunky! Not exactly Wingnut Wings, but then even Wingnut Wings aren’t Wingnut Wings these days!

Thanks for the therapy, how much do I owe you?

Quick update.

I’ve decided to take the same approach as the Gladiator build and construct & rig before painting. Not quite as straightforward this time as the metal cowlings should differ from the painted fabric, haven’t quite worked out how I get round that, but it’s a delicate little bird and I couldn’t quite face rigging post paint & build.

I’m using my mark 1 patent applied for bottle jig...

Construction mainly complete, rigged and primed.

I have to say, this isn’t an easy kit. I’ve found it quite challenging.

Finished.

A little rough round the edges. It’s a tricky little kit - but it does have great potential. I rushed through it to be honest. If you took your time with it, it could be really awesome. The resin engine is really nice.

I’d love to see Frank (Bughunter) do this. I reckon he’d love it.

What a lovely aircraft though. This one is from HMS Eagle, 1924

I would be thrilled with one of your "rush" jobs any day, Guy!  That model looks simply gorgeous to my eyes, and you have photographed it very well.  A very clean and sharp presentation of an interesting aircraft.  Outstanding modeling!

Oh, haven't noticed this off topic build ::)
What a great Flycatcher, your result is really nice. That is a very cozy type which I don't know before.
Very nice to have another company doing 1/48 models now. And with resin engine (they are doing also a BMW WWI 6-cylinder engine) and PE it looks very complete.

For now I would stick to WWI biplanes, since there are so many kits in my stash.

Thanks for showing this jewel,
Frank

Guy,
Not the prettiest horse in the stable but you've done a wonderful job on the model! I guess what I'm saying is don't display it next to a Demon or Fury! Your efforts have been well rewarded here, it's a beauty, and will stand out well in any display.
It's nice to take a break from all linen, wire, and PC10 if only for a change in perspective. Nicely done!
Cheers,
Lance
