Title: WNW W.29 2512 (Christiansen)
Post by: Bill_S on May 15, 2020, 01:04:29 AM
My first Under Construction post on this forum. I got this kit from another modeler; it was part of the Duelist set; there is no box art to be had.

I started a year ago, and put it away for a while.

Much of the initial work on the engine has been completed, though there is still a bit to do.

Cockpit framing has a base coat of Model Master (enamel) Radome tan, with an application of Winsor & Newton Burnt Umber. I'm giving it time to dry, then A spray of Tamiya clear orange prior to detail painting and assembly.

Great start Bill!  The wood looks very convincing.  This is an interesting aeroplane, and I look forward to your progress.

Best regards,

Bob

Good start Bill, I think you'll enjoy this forum. I only joined a few months ago and the folks here have been so kind with passing on tips and encouragement. You don't appear to be in need of any tips, what you have done so far is first class!

A little bit of work on cockpit components:

Control column; I'm using EZ-Line the tubes are from Bob's Buckles (1.0 mm long).

The rudder bar has a tube cemented to it. The control cable will pass through it - eventually.

Cockpit assembly commences...

And I've run into my first hurdle: the kit I got did not come with any of the small decals that were on the Felixstowe sheet. It looks like I'm going to have to cobble something up from Airscale's WWI instruments sheet. Luckily, I have a set on hand!

Bill,
Which EZ-line are you using? Fine or heavy??

Cheers,

A little more progress. The instrument dial are a work of fiction, but it was the best I could do. Waiting on some Airscale placards to see if I can dress it up a bit more.

Cockpit is close; I have a couple of control cables to run, peripherals will wait until just prior to closing the fuselage up.

The first WNW kit I've built with two-piece (upper and lower) wing sections. Close them cemented - only one seam to fill!

Your IP looks great even without the proper decals for the dials! The cockpit construction looks excellent, as does the beginning of the wing!

I was digging through a box the other day, and I found the instrument dials for the W.29! I'm going to leave the IP as-is and save them for another day. At least I can use the small dtat plates for the engine now.

Laid down a coat of radome tan on the fuselage interior. Once dry, I gave it the oil treatment.

After wiping:

A couple of days to dry, then I can spray the clear orange topcoat. It will be nice to button up the fuselage. I tried to anneal the jackets for the Spandaus, and one of them curled up and melted. I've already ordered Gaspatch replacements. In the mean time, I get to prime the wings.

Just found this and it looks very impressive indeed. I would not worry too much about the IP because I doubt whether anyone will see it!

Looking good Bill, the instrument panel looks great. With the naked eye I doubt anybody would be able to tell it is isn't 100% authentic, especially if they peering through a small cockpit opening. Your 'woodwork' is fantastic too. Will be following from here.

Got the fuselage together without a hitch. Rear elevator required just a wee bit of putty.

I ordered HGW Naval lozenge decals; a couple of missteps and I had to strip and start over. Then not enough decal to finish, so I had to order more.   >:( The second set sure looked different than the first!

I cut a small piece of the new batch and placed it on the wing next to the old one...

A different color to the backing paper - I'm happy now. These HGW decals are super thin...

An interesting build, Bill.  I've got the W.19 and I haven't even opened it yet.  Hopefully I won;t have to replace the lozenge.

Just about made my heart stop showing those two decal sheets.  Glad to see it was only the backing paper.

What did you use to wipe the oil paint to achieve the wood grain?

Ken, I use a good quality (Q-Tip brand) cotton swab! The off-brand ones shed their fibers.

The lozenge is giving me fits right now.  :-[

Getting ready to install the throttle and fuel pump, then it's time to put the upper panels on.

Have you read the WNW hints and tips?

Bottom right hand corner is what you may need if you haven't noticed it before.

Keep up the good work, the interior looks great!

Thanks, Gaz. Naval lozenge is different; they didn't use rib tapes, and everything has to line up perfectly. Here is a photo from Aviattic...

I have the WNW HB W.19 kit.  i don;t mind the naval lozernge, but I wish there were more instances of personal markings available.  I find the kit decals a bit boring, and probably done by other modellers a thousand times over.  I may devise my own pilot's personal markings, or trade it...  haven't decided, yet.

Looking forward to your next update.

It's been a while since my last update. I decided to go with Aviattic lozenge instead of the HGW. The Aviattic comes in a full sheet, not the strips provided by HGW. I cut a paper template of the wing.

Then taped the template to the back of the decal sheet...

I then cut the decal into manageable sections. The pattern was quite easy to match this way.

A test fit of the wing; the tail feathers were done using the same method.

Some woodwork in process...

That looks easier than my method. I made a copy of the WNW's decals and then cut them out as a template to cut out the lozenge. There was a lot of cutting. This is really looking nice!!

You should try an aircraft from another country that used the W.29. There are some really neat markings and they are really simple. Norway had several aircraft painted dark green and the their markings were red, white, and blue stripes. The numbers can be easily sourced or make a simple mask to paint them.
