Title: Special Hobby Lloyd C.V 1/48
Post by: Alexis on April 13, 2020, 11:21:35 AM
My next adventure is this neat little bird and perfect company for the Hansa on the shelf now . Being very keen on the out come of my last wooden wonder I want to give it another go and see where this one takes me . I have no info on this type so not sure on the level of detail which will be added , just want an enjoyable build  :)

Terri, so my question, what's next, is already answered.
There are two variants of this kit, yours from 2002 is Series 46, and in 2018 the kit was released again with light modifications as Series 82 (different engines and radiators). I have both kits in stash :D

May be you want to go the hard way and try to plate the whole fuselage and wings with real wood, as Chloe Plattner has done some years ago. Thst is a beautiful model!

It was a  (flat f  k friday) type this into your web browser  ;) pissed myself laughing !!! at work today and I needed some bench time to clear the mind . I start getting the parts ready for clean up and go over the detail , resin bits aren't overly all that bad , but they are very basic and some very thin and care will be needed on cleaning this up . I don't like the resin gun so will opp for Tom's Model Works PE one . Only the stock part will get used ...maybe .

Thanks Rick , made a start on getting some the parts painted . The engine parts I sprayed Tamiya semi gloss black in prep for the metal shades coming next . Cockpit parts got sprayed Tamiya Wooden deck tan . There are no colour call outs of the parts so will have some online checking into this .

Title: Re: Special Hobby Lloyd C.V 1/48
Post by: Alexis on April 22, 2020, 10:45:23 AM
I was going to post pic's on Sunday how how the wood effect turned out , put I fell asleep in the chair and I can't even recall what tv show I was viewing !!

So here they are now . I did a different step with this one . After the base coat was dried I used Tamiya flat brown and applied this in a thinned down dry brushing with water and whisked this back and forth until it started to tack up . Letting this fully dry the next coat was with Tamiya red brown . Using a big round brush , wiping off the excess this was the stabbed into the surface all over the place . Once this was dried I turned to the pencil crayons starting with a light brown and light rubbed the surface in random areas . Under the framing and details a reddish brown shade was used . I still have to start sealing with now with a few coats to darken it it up a bit .

Thanks for tagging along guys  :)

Those wood tones look exciting Terri. I am struggling at the moment trying to get the old pine look of British aircraft - your shade is too red for that but I do like your technique which could readily be adapted for other shades.

Thanks guys for tagging along on this adventure . Wasn't up to really sitting in front of the bench but I did manage to get a bit more progress . The cockpit is finished with the painting and waiting for weathering and all the good stuff that follows with it . I had no idea what the parts should be painted . Instructions don't have any call out colours . After spending some time online that ended up with no results after viewing other builds , Colours seem to be all over the map and just wasn't a reliable source too go by so I winged it and came up with this ....

Haven't spent much time in front of the bench this past week . Been out on my mountain bike and enjoying every minute of it !
I did make some progress this evening . A wash was applied using a mix of future and tamiya black paint to all the parts . Cockpit is assembled for the most part . Waiting for the seat belts to dry , just finished painting them . No belts are included in the kit . I had to dig into the spare box . Engine is mounted in place and as you can see not much of it will been seen . Once the exhaust is in place and the rad , even more will be covered up .

Great looking interior bits, Terri.

This is shaping up to be one of your great builds!

I'm envying you being able to ride.  They've closed all the riding areas around here - the state park, the national forest, the experimental forest, - everything.  I'm getting fat and lazy.

Thanks a lot guys for chiming in with your kind comments  :)

Ken , I feel for you . Next trail i hit will be for you  ;)

Made a bit more progress yesterday by getting the cockpit installed and the halves glued up . Over all fit of the cockpit tub was pretty good . I did have to do some more light sanding on the exposed side of the pit for a better fit . When the glue was set the seems got sanded and out came the putty . While that was setting up I tuned my attention to the tail bits and freed the control surfaces and added hinge detail and pins for mounting later .  Seems have been sanded again waiting for a splash of paint to see if more putty needs to be added .

Glueing the fuselage together always has something of a farewell to the beautiful details in the cockpit. So it is nice to have at least the pictures.

Frank , not sure on being fast but I do plan out each step ahead of time , which in turn makes the build easier .

Thanks Kevin , I try to be different  ;)

Rick , not much clamping force needed . I use these to save on tape . Tamiya tape here is on the pricey side , but it is handy for areas the clamps won't work .

End of weekend progress report .

All the hinge detail is finished on the tail and main wings . In the instructions there is the option to leave the top wing solid or cut it down the center section . Well out comes the scriber and with in a few minutes it became two parts . So how is the pinning going to work . Since a 2mm spacer needs to be added in between them . I mount the struts after clean up gluing only the top end . I drilled out some 0.10mm round stock and cutting 2mm length sections . These I glued to the tops and a brass pin on the extra long side . The center bar is 0.9mm rod and this is a far as I got on the fuselage details . I still have a few more bits to added . Landing gear is also under way , but I'm having fit issue with at the moment .

Terri, your Lloyd is coming along marvelously!  Have you decided on a paint scheme?  Will this be a beautiful mahogany gem like a Chris-Craft speedboat, or a have a lovely Autumn mottle on the wings?  I would have a hard time choosing as I like both, although I opted for the natural wood on my 1/32 build several years ago.  I kept hoping WNW would issue a kit so I could do the mottle too, but that is no longer in the cards.

I am really looking forward to seeing this progress.

Best regards,

Bob

Am I right as rain ...not yet but i did manage some bench time today and got a bit more work done . Part of the rad pipe is well underway . I made this using 0.9mm plastic rod and drilled out the center slip this over 0.6mm rod with a 0,5mm pin on top which will house the rad once in place . The rubber fittings I use q-tips . Holding one over a flame I pulled it to get the right size . This took three tries ! A few more details need to be added , but others need my attention first . Landing gear is also ready to go for the most part . The break still awaits being built . I also started adding details to the fuselage .

Sorry your not fully healed yet Terri but getting some bench time in is a good sign your on the mend. Really like what you've done with the struts, getting the angles all correct must be difficult with this kind of thing!

No need to feel sorry at all Richie , but thank -you . The struts weren't all the hard to get their angles set . the fuselage has grooves for the four rear ones really aiding in this . It was getting the rad pipes to the right height and to aid in this the the groments that I added to the fuselage are drilled out letting me side the assembly up or down once it's time to finally glue the rad in place .

Terri,
Between this build and the “Star Strutter” you are obviously proficient at geometry, at least
in 1/48th scale. This is shaping up nicely.

Thanks Bob and Stephen  8)

With it raining today it was perfect on getting a bit more bench time in . I removed the brake detail earlier on when working on the landing and finished this detail off . rest of the rad piping is finished as well . I made this part with brass wire and tubing from a pulled Q-tip over a flame . The pulley for the flight controls I punch a few of disc with a punch with a spacer in between , drilled a hole and mounted this to the top of the rear strut . Details were also scratched up form scrapes for the tank and mounting pins for later . The fuel line is still a work in progress .. Work started on the tail skid , but nothing worth of pic's yet .

Today I spent my time working on the tail skid . I tossed the PE part and new struts got fashioned up using steel wire . For the post I drilled out 0.25mm stock rod and super glued it all together . A few more details need to be work out but I'm getting there .  I didn't have the right size on wire of any kind ...going to have to restock on this stuff . So plastic rod was used to form the rings . To shape this a hoop was formed to the size need and at the junction it was clamped . Off to the kitchen I went and put on a small pot of water bring it to a boil . Running the cold water tap for a few minutes getting the water as cold as one can . REMOVE THE POT OFF THE STOVE TOP BEFORE THE NEXT SEPT  ;) I held the hoops in the hot water for a minute and then right over into the cold water . They now will hold their shape making the rest of the details easier to manage .

Never used the hot water method - always something to learn here! :)
Small Stuff describes another heating method for deformed resin parts: put it under a 75 Watt lamp for half an hour, and the parts are go back to its old shape  8)

Those little details needs time, but make an important contribution to the overall impression. Well done!

The light bulb trick works on resin like advertised. What they didn't mention is that there is a fairly fine line between heating warped resin to regain it's shape and heating it to resemble a pool of melted resin. Watch it like a hawk, don't walk away, maybe even use a 60 W bulb and take a little longer. Just sayin'...

Thank you Stephen and frank , nice to have your ongoing support  8)

Made a bit more progress today continuing with the gun ring . I drilled the mounting holes in the fuselage and made 4 pegs using 0.5mm rod . To make sure the everything stayed with the correct spacing I made a jig staying clean of the pegs . The small ring was put in place and another spacer was added followed the the second ring and held in place with tape . Tamiya extra thin ( quick setting ) ran that over the joins at the peg junctions and left to dry for an hour followed a the same steps with super glue . This assembly can be removed and re-installed later after painting . Working out the gun mounting details and should have something soon . Tail Skid is finally finish minus the bungee cord which will come later . The brass PE is from the parts bin and the bolts are 0.5mm hex rod . A few more detail where also added to the fuselage . Access panels dress of the under surface of the wings . Can now start on rest of the struts with their and details .

Not a hell of a lot of progress this weekend ( yard work ) but I was able to get the gun mount button up . I made this out of scraps of plastic and metal . It's not perfeft , but it will pass the build . Not an easy item to scratch in this scale . Last of the items left is pinning the struts andadding a bit of detail then it is off too painting !

Frank , I  might be able to help you with that ...

I was able to get a bit of airbrushing done today . The wooden base colour is applied on both upper/lower surfaces . I used Tamiya Wooden Deck Tan and made a start on black basing the tail feathers . The next side will be sprayed tomorrow . For the next wooden shade will be a bit darking picking out different panels . More on this later when things dry ... I also finished drilling the struts for pins , just have to glue them in and finishing the rest of the details .

Okay , it turned out to be one lazy weekend in front of the bench . Raining all weekend and took in many naps ! ;) Got the pins fixed in place and and the rest of the clean up but that is as far as got . Turning my attention back to masking I sprayed the next shade of wood picking out every other panel using Tamiya Desert yellow . This should bring better constrat to the wood paneling breaking up the uniforum colour of just the one shade . With the rain we had this weekend it will take a bit longer for the paint to fully cure before the next stage ...graining  :o The other side of the tail feathers is also sprayed black and is set aside to cure .

Well , weekend has started  time to kick it off with a bit of zoning out in front of the bench . Beginning with round one with the wood effect I picked Tamiya Linoleum deck brown XF-79 using a big round brush the bristel got load with paint and the wipe off the brush . Stabbing the bristel down in the paint cap ( fans it back out ) the surface was whisk back and forth lightly building up the effect on the wings upper and lower surface . This dries to the touch pretty fast but it still needs to cure overnight . For the fuselage I used the same shade applying the same method only after the paint was dried to the touch i went back over it with a dampened brush of just clean water working this back and forth . This step help blend it and providing a wash which stained the base finish . I didn't seal the underling shade . Prop is painted up as well and waiting its clear coating . Spinner is not painted yet . I'm still looking into the blue/gray the instructions call for .

Hi Stephen , Thank-you very much  :)

I'm rather pleased on how it turned out , better then on the HB D.1 .

Stage two is done . For the wings I used a dark brown pencil crayon over the straps covering the joining panels . Running the crayon on the top building this effect up . I didn't go heavy with this the painting stage will add more to this . On a few of the panels I made the odd knot and blended them in with a q-tip . The fuselage I used a light shade with the lightest shade picking out a the tail and up around the cowl . I can now start clear coating  :)

Clear coating is finished . I mixed Tamiya clear orange with Tamiya smoke , pre-shading is done with Tamiya smoke . This now needs to dry for two . It's damp and with many coat applied it's pretty thick ! It's darker then what the photo's are showing and this will come out more once the semi gloss is applied tying it all together , but it is looking good so far . Also sprayed the blue/grey using Tamiya XF82 Ocean grey 2 . Struts , landing gear , gun ring , tail skid , spinner . Work will start on the tail feathers next once the fuselage is dried . I still need to spray the rudder fin black for that stage . It really is starting to come together , fair amount to go yet .

Kevin , yes that is the plan on letting the clear to dry for a few days . It's our rainy season right now so we get a lot of storms passing through leaving a lot of moister in the air taking longer for the paint to cure .

Hi Ken and Gaz , thanks for checking in  ;)  Ken , it seems to work very well for me . I have tried oils before but never had much luck with them so acrylic it is !

Not much progress today but I did manage to finishing masking the areas of the tail feathers framework . White will get sprayed next .

Terri, this is unbelievable!
I was only some days offline and not a month ... and you have this bird nearly done :o

I think I don't like what I see. Because I wanted to plate this kit with real wood. But if I see you wood simulation I think my real-wood-bird would not look better, so I may paint mine too.

Don't get me wrong, your wood looks great!

Hi Frank ,

Yup , she is getting close to being finished , but still far off . I don't think you would have any issue painting the wood effect when you start your build . From what you have shown us with your skills ...it's very impressive work ! ;)

Here is what the tail feathers will look like once the are finally glued in place . I do need to repair a hinge on the right side ... not sure what happen but it is a very easy fix . I tried to take better photo's of the wood effect .

I really like using the pencil crayons for the effect or even just to add some highlights really brings the effect to life . Also very pleased on how the panel lines turned out . There is only a few on the mouldings , all the rest is done with pencil crayon and Tamiya smoke . will be trying this again in the future . More progress will be coming soon  :)

Hi Terri!
Great work all around! Fascinating wood effects, thanks for showing us. I should give it a go at some point, I think. I find it difficult to get the crayons to stick to the surface, but I'm sure I'm doing something wrong and need to re-read your thread here.

Good luck with the next steps!

Hi Fredrik , thanks for looking in  :)

The pencil crayons work best on a dull surface . They will not stick or work well on a gloss surface at all and can't blend the shades together for different effects , they end up getting removed  :( . So if starting with a gloss surface shoot a light dull coat or use flat base paints .

Detailing paint is almost finished up just a few items still left to do . Exhaust which I haven't even started cleaning up yet and the gun still awaits as well . Decaling can start tomorrow and maybe even a bit of weathering . I did forget to drill the rigging holes in the wings so will have a go at that as well . So here is the state of the build now .

This is getting better and better. When you went from paint and pencil to varnished wood, Did you brush or airbrush the "varnish"?

I am getting anxious to see the finished model, so take your time and let it all come together.

Assembly has started ! First I did a wash using Flory dark dirt on the fuselage and once cleaned up I started gluing parts on . The extuast are not the best and I should have made replacements but it is what is and they don't look overly all that bad in the end . A sealant coat is up next with a bit more weathering with chalks and then it's the main wings and struts . So here is where I'm at so far . I'm going to re-paint the extuast , not happy with it  :(

Hi guys and thank-you !

Fredrik , we just finished having a week of those temp's with a few thunderstorms making it muggie which is very not very comfortable . So I'm looking forward to the cooler weather and a few naps tossed in here and there .

Made a bit of progress today by sealing the decals with clear , drilling the rigging holes which I kept putting off  ::) and coat of Vallejo satin finish . Mounted the lower wings . Before the top wings get mounted in place rigging lines are the next phase . The satin really toned down the shine tying it together .

Thanks Gary , It is very time consuming making the turn buckles . I'm out of 0.4mm brass tubing , 0.5mm is too big and it takes me a few tries on getting the right diameter from heat stretching q-tips . I also drop many ....many wire hoops when making them  ::)

I see you are from Canada ;)
Since a year or so q-tips with a plastic shaft are no more sold in Europe for environment reasons! Cotton swabs are still available but the shaft is wrapped from paper so you would not be able to stretch them to a small diameter ;D
So if you still can get some, you should store some packages for future use ...

Thanks guys  :)

Bob , not sure about that . I missed details which I should have caught . Yours is far better then this little one  ;)

Frank , Yup Kanada ! I have an endless supply of them . After the cotton swab is ued I cut off the cotton and save the shafts for later . They are very cheap to buy at the dollar store . 200 for buck ! It won't be long before the rest of world starts putting bans on plastic .

Rick , I started doing that a few years back , just makes it easier if some lines are in place already . Some aeras are very tight and hard to get the line through the eyelets .

I did make a little progress yesterday , but it was more napping then anything else . Tail planes are weathered and the flight controls on the main wings . Also finally got the gun put together with a few colouful words as well . No pictures , batteries died and are charging up so will have pic's later this evening .

Here are the photos .

The white I highlighted the ribs with a grey pastel chalk with a light yellow sand along the leading edges and the sealed with Vallejo flat clear .

The paraldrum is ready for paint . I left the ammo drum off and will have that resting either on the seat or the folding table once everything else is finally finished . Next step is mounting the main wings and struts .

Thanks Gary  :)

I have waited awhile for this stage and man , it feels good to have the wings finally mounted . Had a mishap long the way and it was my own doing - should have known better . But I snap the top of the front part of the strut and one rear on the left side , cracked the join on the rad  ::) I had issues with the pins and instead of re-drilling the holes I in my own wisdom applied force . Not good results I tell ya . But that is now repaired set aside to fully cure over night . Then I can move on to the struts . The MG has it's first coat for the base , Tamiya flat black .

Sometimes you gotta break a few eggs.....
Works sorta the same with struts and mounting top wings.

That really looks good Terri, you have done outstanding work on this model

Looks great, Terri!  Modeling is fraught with perils.

Mishap overcome very nicely. It's looking great Terri, I have to keep reminding myself that you model in 1/48. All those varieties of tone in your wood effect make it look like it must be 1/32.

Thanks guys , you are all great inspirations and it keeps me going  :)

Well SP , I hope that no more " broken " eggs will happen ...knock on wood  :o

Richie , I do build in 32 scale and have a few in the stash waiting for paint , glue , details and lots of swear words ! ;)

They sure are Ken , even better now that the struts are in place !  :)

The kit struts are to short , glad I left the pins on the long side . Each struts pins are trimmed to fit so the top wing sits levelled and it was successful . I will let this dry for a day before I finish off the rigging .

Very nice, such triple-V struts are not seen often.
The colors are beautiful, after all parts are coming together.

Cheers,
Frank

Thanks guys  :)

I have another four day weekend and there will be bench time and hopefully if the weather holds ....yard work ! Once the rigging is done the rest will go quick , just a matter of gluing them on  :) It's sad though , that the end is near . This has been a very enjoyable build  :) :) :)
