Title: Sopwith Pups in Navy Service — PC-10 or also PC-12 possible?
Post by: Borsos on April 02, 2020, 05:03:21 PM
Sopwith Pups in RNAS Service were „almost certainly PC-10“, like WNW‘s instructions say. But I found an old posting on the aerordome where Dan San Abbott says, PC-12 was highly plausible for Naval Pups.
Normally I‘d go for PC-10 which seems the safer choice, but I‘d rather paint my Pup in the wonderful Mr Paint PC-12. Is there anybody out there who could prove me wrong?  ;)

Andreas, do you have access to the wonderful Windsock Datafile Special "Sopwith Pup"?
Look at page 38 " PC10 Khaki (or, in some cases, PC12 Red-Brown dope)"

Another interesting read is the Windsock Datafile 22 "Sopwith Triplane"
There is an interesting discussion "PC12 on Triplanes" on page 31/32 ".. if PC10 stocks were low, PC12 were used."
I think, at least parts of this discussion was also valid for the Pup.

My two cents,
Frank

Thanks a lot Frank.
Yes, I own both, but you have brought it perfectly to the point and I totally agree.
But I do not own every issue of Windsock International, Cross and Cockade, Over the Front or any other WWI related magazine. So if from time to time new hypotheses or insights regarding colors are published there, I only get them by chance (e. g. the Nieuport 4 vs 2 color discussion or the Roland color theories...). And although questions on WW1 colors are by far an exact science and building models is still a hobby, I also like to stay updated — at least I try to. But obviously there are no groundbreaking new insights in the usage of PC-12 on Pups or Tripes beyond what is written in the WDFs, so I can spray both in PC-12 without worrying. And that is what I had hoped for... I simply like some new paint spots in my display cabinett... :)

Hi!
I think that depends also on what Pup you want to build.
I have both Windsock books mentioned by Frank and my impression is that PC12 "came out" late in war, or when PC10 was not available.
In a third Windsock Fabric Special about British dopes ( https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/windsock-fabric-special-wwi-british-1858858235 ) is mentioned a third color called AMAPD that is on the red brown side.
So this is my suggestion, more than your Pup is flying late in the war more it's possible that PC12 is its dress.
My two cents!

And then there was the Sopwith Tripe prototype N500 named “Brown Bread” for PC12 in 1916.

When was it painted PC12? There are a lovely set of images of the brand new N500 in CDL, which is how I modelled her

Apparently shortly after it was taken on charge by No. 1 Sq. RNAS. Google “Sopwith Triplanes N500 Brown Bread”
