Title: Savoia Pomilio SP3 - 1/48
Post by: matt77 on March 31, 2020, 09:06:05 PM

I chose to make the model of the Savoia Pomilio SP3 engaged on the war front in 1917.

Therefore the heraldry of this plane had to be reproduced.

I begin with the construction of the cell with the cockpit and the machine gunner housing.

The next step will be the creation of the upper fairing of the cockpit and the motor.

As Italian I'm always happy to see someone to decide to build one of our planes.
In this case, one of the most difficult to build.
So, I will follow your work.
I see that the printed parts are near to the real one, the only things missed are the serial
numbers on the two inner sides of the external fins and the two on the central one.
Not difficult to draw before assembling.
Cheers,
Roberto

Amazing layout and printing on these card models, but being able to cut, fold and assemble them into anything resembling an airplane is a skill set beyond my dexterity and patience. I am in awe of the talent and looking forward to each step as you present it.

A really cool starting!
As a plastic modeller, sometimes I used printed paper parts from this kind of kits, for example dashboards, because they are better
looking than my plastic parts!
I really enjoy your build.

First, thanks everyone.

Here is the assembly of the longerons, struts and tail.

On the rudders there is the error reported rightly by AndRoby67: the inscription of the serial number is missing on the internal faces of the external rudders.
When I make this 1/33 scale model I will make the tail exactly.

Matt
For those of us who are cellulose challenged, how did you make the longerons? I don't see folded and glued paper being stiff and strong enough to support the empanage much less stand up to handling and rigging. Then again I don't see how y'all paper masters turn out such incredible pieces of work.

Stainless steel rods, the paper that is wrapped around is 80gr/mq

Thanks Matt, I was hoping there was a hidden secret there.
I suppose the grade of paper is extremely important and a working knowledge of different paper grades is essential. I have tried a paper card model or two, but gave it up as beyond my abilities. Y'all are demonstrating a level of skill that would drive a Japanese Orgami Master crosseyed. I can't do it, but I sure enjoy watching paper models come together here.

Hi matt77,
thank you for your answer.
If I see well, you add roundels on upper wing, with right green outer ring.
This was not common practice, our pusher planes (Fiat-Farman, Voisin etc.) had no roundels on upper surfaces.
Excellent work until now.

About the roundel issue, I hesitated because I never found photos that portrayed the upper part of the wings.
I could not say if the wing was with or without cockade.
Then I found a photo that shows the SP3 from behind and lets see the upper wing, this one here:
At the top left is visible the roundel

Oh yes, the photo you posted is the only one I found in internet with proofs about presene on roundels.
In the dedicated Windsock Datafile 128, there are 6 photos more. Four with and two without roundels.
So, I think you choose right, also because serial of that SP.2 is close to yours.
