Title: Revell 1/28 Scale Fokker D.VII
Post by: Radarman on March 31, 2020, 05:47:29 AM
Hello everyone,
It looks like I'll be working from home for the foreseeable future so I've set up an Imgur account and will start a new project.
A kit I've had in my stash for a long time is now going to get some attention, so here goes.

The much maligned 1/28th scale Revell Fokker D.VII is know for it's miss-sized rear fuselage and odd shaped main-plane, among other things.
I've gathered the information needed to make the required corrections along with some aftermarket bits and pieces to keep me busy, so here goes.

                                                                                                                                        Kevin in Port Orchard

Armed with the March/April 1996 issue of "Windsock International', "FineScale Modeler" issues from January 1999 and March 2005 and a build report found on "The Aerodrome" and "AeroScale" by Steven Lawson, along with all the appropriate Data Files, I have begun my quest.

Here are some shots of the over-sized fuselage compared to the Datafile plans.

I'll make the corrections to the fuselage first and if that goes as planed I'll have a go at the wing.

This was a kit which escaped me as a teenager - I knew of the other large Revell kits but not this one. I will therefore be following with interest.

I don't know if you will believe this...

It will be quicker, easier and less frustrating to chop the whole back off the fuselage and scratch build a new one. It's a simple box, perhaps an hour's work if you have never done this before. Half an hour if you have

Hi Radarman,
Revell has released a total of four kits in 1/28, whereby the Sopwith is difficult to get. The other kits are always reissued.

1. Fokker DR.I

2. Fokker D.VII

Thanks, everyone, for all the support and encouragement. This correction takes a lot of planning. With that in mind I have started the cutting, or should
I say "butchery".

Following the articles from FineScale Modeler and AeroScale I've removed extra plastic from the spine and removed the underside. I used DYMO label tape
as a guide and started out with a scriber. I then completed the cut with a JLC razor saw.

I'll replace the underside of the fuselage with .40" Evergreen Sheet plastic. This will allow me to make a better representation of the seam and lacing.

                                                                                                               Back to work,

That is a good start - I do like kits to be shown who is boss with some use of saws, scalpels, drill, etc. Makes the model more interesting....

Hello Everyone,
I'm a little further on in my surgery of the D.VII fuselage. The front area below the engine is still to be
corrected. I'm adding a Copper State BMW IIIa engine to the build so that might require the deeper pan beneath the chin.
This correction has turned out to be pretty strait forward.

I'll be working on the cockpit next.

RAGIII

Thanks RAGIII,
It was a fairly easy modification. I've still got that upper wing to tackle, wish me luck.
Meanwhile, I added the lacing to the new underside. Sixty-six holes from a #78 drill bit
and some .007" aluminum wire striped from an electrical cord and you're all done.

The aircraft I'll be modeling will have a white rear fuselage so I won't have to worry about
the lacing getting in the way of the lozenge decals.

                                           Happy modeling to everyone,

Hello everyone.
I hope you are keeping busy and staying healthy. Many thanks for all the kind comments and encouragement you have posted.

I have began the process of correcting the cockpit of my Fokker. The first job was to create a seat
and a new floor board. You can compare the size of the kit seat to the one I've made. It was closer to 1/32 scale.

I used some thick paper for the seat back and a scrap of plastic for the base. I have to thank the Paper Model folks for
giving me the idea to use paper. The paper allowed me to add the flair to the outer edges of the seat back. It was then
coated in then CA glue keep it's shape. It's been sprayed with primer and will receive a lozenge cover. The cushion is shaped
from Apoxie Sculpt.

The floor board has Copper State photo etch for the skid plates. I'll be using a Flugzeugwerke 1/28 scale compass.

Anyway, that's where I am today.

Hello everyone,
I have continued at my glacial pace on this kit. Here is the seat with the lozenge covering and the cushion in place.
I'll be adding the belts along the way. My concentration is now on the support frames and the lozenge screen behind the seat.

Hello everyone,
Another bit of progress to report. I've assembled the Flugzeugwerke Compass. This was very delicate and
it couldn't have been accomplished without the help of drills from Drill Bits Unlimited and the use of an
RB Productions Micro Saw.

The compass dial is a 1/32 scale decal from Airscale but fit the 1/28 scale unit just fine.

I will continue on my cockpit work and hope to stay on track with this build.

Thanks and happy modeling to all,

That is a build with nice details, and I like details a lot!

Sixty-six holes from a #78 drill bit and some .007" aluminum wire striped from an electrical cord and you're all done.
Is that drill around 0.4mm ? I don't know this number scheme until know.
To handle that size should be easy, my smallest drills are 0.15mm, but very hard to handle without breaking. The next size is 0.22, which is much more robust and used often.
An electrical cord with aluminum wires? Sounds interesting, since I know only copper, at least in this small sizes.

You take a good advantage of this big scale, which allows a lot of realism.

Cheers,
Frank

A #78 drill is equal to .406 mm and the .007" wire is equal to .1778 mm. The aluminum wire works better than monofilament fishing line
because it has no memory and holds the desired shape.

Awesome work on true classic kit! :)

Thanks jeroen_R90S!

I made a little more progress over the last few days.

The seat is temporarily attached to the cockpit screen which has a bit of reversed lozenge added for variety.

Next up has been the control linkage and rudder bar. I've added some eyelets for the rudder cables and made the
aileron crank with some pre-drilled holes for the cables.

Hello everyone and thanks for the kind praise.
I decided the kit instrument panel was a little too generic and took on the task of fabricating my own.
With the help of the Copper State photo-etch set designed for this kit and their 1/28th scale German Gauge set
here is what I've come up with. The kit panel is on the left ;).

This is much more painful than my paper mods.  You are doing a great job.  I'd love to see this one "live" at  a future model show!

Just lovely,
Dan
Thanks Dan, ever since I moved to this side of the Sound I haven't ran in to any other modelers. I hope we can meet up at a show when things
settle down. I'll get to see your work in person again. Your paper builds are mind blowing.

Next up on the build will be the engine. The particular aircraft I plan to represent was a D.VIIF and requires a BMW D.IIIA. Once again
I turn to Copper State Models for their 1/28th scale power plant.

Working little bits at a time I'll get this together.
That's a good slogan!
And since you handle every little part as if it were a model of its own, the result will be great!

Hello everyone,
Thanks for following along with this build. I've started the assembly of the BMW IIIa. This is a nice add on to this kit.

I don't plan to add plug wires to the twelve spark plugs. The engine will be buried without panels exposing it. I've got to say I have a
lot of respect for the modelers that can add that type of detail in 1/32 or 1/48th scale.

For a bit of fun here is the 1/28th scale engine compared to a 1/72nd scale Fokker.

Maybe I should think off adding the extra detail on such a large canvas.

Thanks again to everyone.
I've been working on the modifications to the engine side panels to reflect a late build Fokker built D.VII F. Out of the box the kit is
more in line with a late OAW machine. I needed to shorten some of the louvers, add the round oil tank access door and change the
orientation of the rectangular access door.

I also marked out the points for the panel fasteners and added the piano hinge to the access door.

So there you go, there's not much to change on the port side.

                                              Happy modeling,

Hello everyone,
I have continued with my efforts to modify this kit to reflect a late build D.VII F. The radiator and it's shell were very generic so I set
to work on this. I've thinned out the area where the pipe enters the upper radiator tank of the and added the sheet metal fairing that
protects the pipe. Some aircraft had this removed, apparently, but the photo of the aircraft I'm building has it in place.

I've also made a basic looking radiator to fill the void.

Next up was modifying the kit firewall. I removed the unrealistic details, corrected the shape, adding a bend in the top portion and added
the lozenge baffle with the hole for the tachometer drive cable. I used aluminum tape to represent the real thing.

So far the engine is fitting in the fuselage, although, I'm still thinning the upper sheetmetal areas for a more scale affect.

Thanks for looking and happy modeling,

Moving right along, I've started to construct the Spandau guns to replace the kit parts. As you can see, they are very basic.

Right now no one is producing 1/28th scale Spandaus, though, Model Monkey has some planed for the near future. Lacking those
I've turned to the Tom's Model Works set number 400, 1/28 scale WWI German Guns. Here's the start, it's a combination of Tom's
photo etch and my scrap plastic parts.

Hello everyone,
Thanks for the positive feedback on the Spandaus. To go along with them I needed to fabricate
the ammo and belt collection boxes as the kit didn't really include them. I started out with the
basic shapes and built on from there.

I added some photo etch belt ammo and there you go.

Hello everyone,
Thanks to one and all for the positive support you're providing for this build. With the current situation
in the world this feedback is much appreciated.

I've about wrapped up the modifications to the fuselage. Some of the latest work involved correcting
the area between the cockpit and engine.

As you can see, the kit comes with just a square cutout.

I've corrected this area to work with the ammo and belt boxes I've constructed. The cutout for the de-compression
handle has been enlarged, also.

Another item needing attention was the shroud over the fuel gauge. I carved a basic shape from wood.

I debated whether to plunge form it or cast it in resin. I ended up casting it and hollowing it out for a better look.

So, with these modification completed I will move on to finishing the cockpit and getting the fuselage closed up.

Thanks again everyone and Happy Modeling!

Yes, trying to clean up a small seam in that area was a recipe for disaster, and this build has plenty of those ahead.

Awesome work -I also cant believe how clean your model looks! Mine invariably end up looking like a mess of filler, primer, paint and dust before primer...

jerome_R90S, I try to keep the work area fairly clean and work in stages. I've had to make a conscious effort do this. It slows the progress but works for me.

Anyway, I've started adding the cockpit details. Because most of it is scratch built or from Tom's Modelworks, there is no guarantee it will all fit.
I applied Aviattic reverse lozenge to the sides and built some framing. From there the throttle, ignition control and pump were added.

So that's were I am today, maybe I can close it up in a week.

Hello everyone,
I'm happy my attempts at scratch building have earned your praise. This has been a
great training ground for future plans rolling around in my head. Or, perhaps, I should say,
"Ich habe einen Vogel". Maybe I'm a bit nuts.

Here's my progress.

The cockpit has all the components installed and the next step is adding the BMW engine.
I hope to have it all closed up over the next few days. This build has required a lot of pre-planning
to ensure nothing is forgotten and to minimize the snags. All the matting surfaces will be cleaned up
to ensure a good bond with the glue. Once the fuselage is closed up I'll clean up the seams and add
the ammo feed and spent shell shoots along with the other bits.

Hello everyone,
Thanks very much for your interest in this build and the positive feedback. After working on the fuselage
I've moved on to the tailplane. As a result of the narrowing of the fuselage the horizontal stabilizer required
correcting. Also, the elevator was miss-shaped.

When adding plastic to plastic, I like to use scraps from the kit or, at least, from the same kit manufacturer.
I feel it glues together and cleans up better. In the case I used plastic from the bottom of the fuselage to fill
in the needed areas.

There has been 4.5mm added to each side of the elevator as well as the area where the fuselage turtle back meets
the stabilizer. I've also made new control horns from old brass fret.

That's it for now. I Think I'll move on to the axel wing and landing gear struts next.

Been catching up - what a shame that so much of the lovely internal detail will barely see the kight of day, and certainly not be very clear to a viewer. Your modifications to the tail are super - it is not possible to see what you have done from the second photo. That is first class modelling.

Hello everyone,
Many thanks for the comments on my build. I've made slow progress over the last two weeks.

The main focus has been on the wheels and axel wing. The kit wheels are closer to 1/32 scale while the
axle wing is slightly too long fore and aft.

I don't own a lathe and haven't found the time to learn CAD to make 3D printed replacements
so I set about making my own improved parts. First, I started by removing the tyres from the rim and covers.

Next, I thinned down the covers and made two discs of sheet plastic, 21.5mm in diameter to enlarge them.
I also made a 20.6mm disc to fit inside a gray o-ring. The o-ring is 20.6 mm inside and just under 27mm outside.

Once glued together I used CA glue to fill in the edge of the centers and sanded them to shape.

I filled in the generic valve stem access and fashioned on to represent a Fokker built aircraft. Here is a comparison between
the new tyre on the left and the original on the right.

So, one down and one to go.

                                        Happy modeling!

Hello everyone,
Thanks once again for your positive feedback and encouragement. I've completed the work on the wheels
and am waiting for some Albion Alloys thin walled tube to make the landing gear struts. I have to send out
a big "Thank you" to Mike Norris and his PDF builds. I'll be following his method to replicate the struts.

In the meantime, I've been working on the correction of the upper wing. The wing has gained notoriety from it's
upside down taper. Basically, the wing has "Anhedral" on the top side. The correction was very simple as described
in the January 1999 FineScale Modeler article "Fixing a Fokker".

I started by making some small cuts to the upper half of the wing at the places marked in black.

I taped the part down to my work bench and used CA glue to lock the new shape. After the CA cured I used epoxy to
glue a square brass tube to ensure the wing held it's new shape. I also removed the ailerons to give them some offset.

I glued the bottom to the top halves together and now I have a corrected wing.

This was the easiest part of my quest to correct the shape of this kit.

Thanks for following and enjoy the rest of your summer or winter, where ever you may be.

RAGIII,
The lower wings are fine. I might need to adjust the locating holes for the struts, though. The trailing edges are commendably thin and well shaped.

Errors of this kind are hard to correct in my 1/48 scale and I have to live with that. My trick is to distract the viewer with small details ;)

I just discovered your posts on the Fokker.  I remember the Spad, Camel, and Tri-plane but this is the first I've seen of the D.VII.  Some of those older Revell kits are pretty crude.  Years ago, I built their F4U-1 and wound up using the shell of the wings and fuselage.  Everything else was trashed.  You've done excellent workmanship.  I'm looking forward to the rest of it.  One question, is the kit propeller acceptable or will you have to replace it, too?

Jammed Vickers, I'm glad you asked. I think the kit prop is suppose to represent a "Heine" unit. The aircraft I will represent was equipped with an Axial prop.

RAGIII let me know if I can help you out.

Out of the box the axel wing represents an OAW built aircraft. I've corrected it to reflect a Fokker built aircraft.
I've also replaced the flimsy struts with brass.

I'm coming close to the point of painting the fuselage but first need to add some small details.
The cowl fasteners were fashioned by squashing some copper wire and bending 90 degrees.

Along with those, I'm adding various access doors and fittings.

Hello everyone,
Thanks, once again, for the positive comments and encouragement you've sent my way.

I've been working on the rudder/vertical stabilizer along with the elevator/horizontal stabilizer.

The vertical stabilizer was too tall and too short in length. I separated the rudder from the fin then removed approximately 2mm off the bottom
of the fin. A piece of the removed plastic was then glued to the end of the fin, adding 2mm to the length and correcting the proportions.
The rudder was then pinned with brass wire and reattached. I added a control horn from scrap brass and reproduced the hinges with aluminum tape.

The shape and proportions of the horizontal stabilizer and elevator were corrected in an earlier post. I added control horns to the elevator and pinned it
to the stabilizer with the often seen droop.

I'm now approaching the point of adding decals to the wings and digging out my airbrush to add some colour to the fuselage.

                                                                                                                                         Happy Modeling,

Terri, thanks for the support you show toward this build.

Good work Kevin!!!
Dan

Thanks Dan. Isn't it time you played with a little plastic?

Anyway, here's a little bit of an update. I've been working on some of the little details that are missing from the kit.
To represent the mounting brackets/hardware found on the sides of the fuselage, where the lower wings are attached,
I filed some scrap photo etch brass to shape.

They will be attached to the fuselage once the lower wing is in place.

Speaking of the lower wing, I've started applying the decals. Naturaly, they are from Aviattic. I can't wait for "Rib Tape Time".

That's it for now. Thanks again to everyone for the encouragement you've given me during this build.

Hello everyone,
The process of applying the lozenge is moving along. The Aviattic 4-colour went down on the lower wing with no problems.
I'm now in the process of adding the edge tapes then it will be on to the ribs. I was able to get the Aviattic 1/28th scale
Lozenge printed on white decal paper, something not listed on the Aviattic web site. Richard Andrews of Aviattic was able to
do these for me and it is greatly appreciated.

I've got the edge tapes applied to the leading edge and the upper trailing edges. Once they are dry and trimmed
I'll move on to the lower trailing edge and then the actual rib tapes. With the slow pace I'm working at, I should
be done with this wing by Saturday.

Hello everyone,
Here's a quick update. I've finished applying the rib tapes to the underside of the lower wing.
I also added the wing crosses. I didn't want to try the 24 year old kit decals. They looked very thick
and the proportions were off. I used some replacements from Copper State Models. Those were slightly
too long so I had to trim off 1.5 mm off each arm.

Now it's on to the topside rib tapes.

                                                             Thanks and Happy Modeling,

Hello everyone,
Thanks for the feedback I've received about this build. The task of rib tape application continues.
I've completed the lower wing and can say the Aviattic lozenge decals are a real joy to work with.

I've moved on to the upper wing and ailerons. This should take up rest of my available bench time this weekend.

Until my next post, happy modeling to everyone.

Good decal work!
May be it to late, but I can recommend the Windsock Fokker D.VII Triology, which contains detailed lozenge plans. I was surprised, how perfectly the plans, the Eduard wings and the Aviattic decal stripes matches. If I remember right from my OAW build, they tried to avoid getting a seam on a rib.

Cheers,
Frank

Hello everyone,
For the past week all my modeling time has been dedicated to Rib Tapes for the upper wing of this D.VII.
Today was one very rainy day which meant I could finish them off.

Good decal work!

Thanks for the advice Frank. I think I was able to align the seams in the Lozenge away from the ribs.
I Have the Fokker D.VII Trilogy and it is a great reference to use.

So, the top of the upper wing:

And the under side:

The edge tapes have been added including the ailerons:

Next it's on to the crosses and matching some paint to the lozenge colours for touchup.

Hello everyone and many thanks for the feedback I've received along the way.  This Fokker will soon begin
to look like a bi-plane. I've completed the lozenge and rib tapes and added a few crosses. The fuselage has
been painted it's Jasta 46 colours but still needs a few more things. I'm now working on alignment and making
the required struts. Once all the struts are worked out I'll add the guns, ammo feeds and all the other easily knocked
off bits.

Working in this scale has the advantage of being easier on the eyes but, also, the disadvantage of showing mistakes and omissions to a greater extent.

Your model is very nice, but again I'm deeply impressed by your very clean work with your special tooling!

Frank, in the past, I've made the same type of jig for 1/72nd scale Fokker D.VIIs. I'll save this jig just in case I'm crazy enough to build this Revell kit again.

Hello everyone,
Only a little bit of progress on this build due to other duties. Here in the Pacific Northwest, it's what I like to call "The season of 10,000,000 leaves".
It's been me against the "Mighty Maple Leaf" working in the garden. Anyway, after a fun filled day outside I found the time to get this Fokker on it's feet.

You might remember that I made my landing gear struts out of brass. The jig I made really helped to get everything aligned. I've also been measuring for the wing struts in preparation of making them out of brass also.
Here's another comparison shot between the 1/28th scale Revell and a 1/72nd scale Roden kit.

You definitely need a lot of display space for a collection in this scale.

That's it for now, happy modeling!

Hello everyone,
I've been a little bit busy working outside the last few weeks so the Fokker has had to wait for a bit.
My current task has beed to make new struts to replace the flimsy bits provided with the kit.
After correcting the fuselage none of the struts work. I used my "Strutter" with 1.4 mm O.D. tube
and soft soldered them.

The interplane struts were pretty simple to make while the cabane tripod will require a bit of higher math.

Anyway, wish me luck. Happy Modeling!   Kevin

Kevin, I guess you know how much I like soldering. You have done the struts in the best possible way, this could not be done better !
I'm sure you will solve the tripod mathematics too, if you begin this task in such controlled way. 8)

Hello everyone,
Here's a short update on this build. I've spent the last month learning to use a "Vector Graphics"
program to make the artwork for my selected scheme. I then printed them out on white decal paper.
I'm modeling a Fokker D.VIIF from Jasta 46 flown by Fritz Haack.

I've also finished adding all the small bits to the top of the fuselage such as the guns, ammo feeds and blast protectors.

I'm to the point of attaching the upper wing and the final details.

                                                                     Happy Modeling!

As you can see, I took the option of adding the letter "G" to the top wing along with on under either lower wing. I though it might add to the overall look.

I must apologize for the gap between posts. My mother passed away a few weeks ago, so I've not been able to
spend much time at the bench. I'm sad to lose her but am glad it was not due to COVID.

So, anyway, this build is nearly done. I'm left with the task of attaching all the easily knocked off parts.
