Title: Pfalz D.IIIa Eduard 1/48
Post by: xan on February 04, 2020, 10:50:12 PM
Hi I start this model one year ago. Meanwhile I did another model, so I open this topic for the rework of the Pfalz.
this means I have first to do a resume of the build:

I choose to represent this plane:

the pilot Busso von Abensleben was a young of a Saxon lord family:

He flew in Jasta 21.
In June of 1918, the 14th, he shot down a ballon but was shot down too by a french hunter.
He was prisoner and died the day after.
No brillant ace in this story, but the real face of this: death without glory.

The plastic sprues shows tha wings ribbs are very caricaturals and I decade to redo them:

I use first the second pair odf wings given in the box as a test:

as I was happy with the result I applied this technic on the wings:

for the upper wing I took of the tank because it was under the plywood:

Thanks for the summary of how you got here - very impressive photo documentation! Could you explain a little about how you applied the wing ribs -- looks like you used some sort of transfer tape?

Yes I use a plotter (silhouette prtrait) the mask was drawn according to a drawing with studio silhouette software so i was sure the ribs will be propely parallel

Hi Andreas! we are missing you in "la guerre aérienne"!

the wings are mounted

In the Eduard model, the jonction between wings and fuselage is not "soft" enough:

I added a lot of surfacer to correct it:

this is the decoration I choose
Painting time is approching so it is time to do some improvment with paint

About the white:
it won't be pure white so I tried mixing with blue or beige...

It will be white with beige...

About the black , there is no black paint in it!!!
I mixed primary colors (yellow red and blue) with a double of blue to reach a blueish black:

An interesting approach to finding colors to use.  You will no doubt learn a lot by mixing your own colors.
And, great detailing on this model!

12 flat white H2 / 1 sail color H85

Then in the ribbs an the trailing edge
12 flat white H2 / 3 sail color H85
(https://nsm09.casimages.com/img/2020/02/17//20021710461923469216651157.jpg)

Then pure white and base color diluated:

masking mork is one a of this model challenge. there were quite hard to do and thit have been quite long too to place them in the model.
Next step,  black paint!e!

Yesterday it was "black friday"...

I melt the three primary colors to do my black. and put more blue than red and yellow (x2) because I wanted a blue shade...

It is the kind of things that don't let me sleep by night so...

2mm bigger:

looks better:

This is perhaps one of the best 1/48th scale, or maybe any scale, Pfalz DIIIa I have seen! Beautiful!

Nice work on the undercarriage. The tyres are a little on the dark side for my taste, but the bungee chords and rigging look great!

Thank you guys!
The tyres are a little on the dark side for my taste
Idid them with tyre black mixed with white.
Anyway it is the first time I do a 14/18 plane with black tyres, but all the Pfalz pics I saw show them very dark

That looks great, Xan.  The weathering to tone down both the white and black provides a realistic appearance.
