Time to start on my Christmas gift. The brand new resin kit from Lukgraph. Nigrivender prepared a great presentation,
https://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=10618.msg197261#msg197261
so let me not repeat it. I will only say that the model seems to have a great potential and I will try to build it as well as I can.
My first steps went to the 3D printed engine. The material is quite brittle but it yields well to a sharp razor. However, when cutting the cylinders special care must be paid as some trees are attached to the spark plugs. Also the valve rockers are quite fragile. Luckily, there are three spare cylinders and so is the case with the intake pipes. Very good move, as I managed to damage two of each.
I was worried if the engine fits the cowling, which is quite thick, but is seems no serious surgery will be necessary. I will only thin down the free edges to pretend it is more delicate. Also the intake pipes, the valves push rods and electric wiring will be added.

Some preparation of resin elements is inevitable. The inner truss sides have to be sanded and polished and when it is done they fit nicely into the fuselage interior.
The floats are moulded as bulk elements, this is a clever idea as this should improve the stability of the completed model. The upper sides are very fine with sockets for PE inspection hole covers. The underside where the moulding trees were attached requires a lot of treatment - sanding, filling, etc. This is now underway.

Me too, this will be another real treat, and also very useful for other builders.

Now I want to go and start my Eduard kit ...following along with great interest . I must say , love details on the engine !
Terri

You’re a machine Prze!
Great subject.
Guy
-
Hello,
It's nice that you've already taken it. I will probably mature for some time. In my set the engine covers are kind of thinner but I will check later.
-
Thank you for watching and commenting.
I have done some work on Clerget. The kit includes steel wire for push rods which must be trimmed to desired length. But I preferred to use my favourite soft soldering wire to this end - it is true it has to be cared for to be straight but the ease of cutting is unrivalled.

Catching up Prez because I have been away. A super subject and a super start. I will be following this with great interest.
Stephen.

Moving forward nicely with the engine :)
Terri

The engine painted. The photo show lots of grain from 3D print but in reality it looks much better. Dirt and electric wires are still missing.
The floats are filled and sanded, holes for the struts drilled. Wire pieces trimmed and though it is not the Wingnut it stands on its own while dryfitting.
The bits for the interior are being prepared.
All in all, a lot of modelling fun on this.

Do you think it'll be a 'tail sitter' when complete?
Mike

Excellent engine and your prep work on the parts will pay off as always!
RAGIII

Wow P, tht is coming along quite nicely. Lovely lines.

Lovely! Floats seem to be in fashion. :)
Isn't it supposed to be a tail sitter? :-\

Lovely! Floats seem to be in fashion. :)
Isn't it supposed to be a tail sitter? :-\
Good point :o
-
Seems to be a nice kit, and in the hands of such a master this will create a great model!
Some parts are now well know to me, since I create a Schneider, which is the precursor of the Baby, in the neighbour thread.
And to avoid a tail sitter I put lead in the main floats 8)
Cheers,
Frank
-
Thank you all for the interest and your kind words.
As for the tailsitting, yes I am quite sure it will sit on the tail. Putting the lead into the floats is out of question because they are bulk. But I am not concerned, I plan to display the model on the trolley and with a trestle under the tail float. All that beaching gear is suitably provided in the kit.

More prep work...
The internal truss elements armed with eyelets for rigging. Also all the transverse elements - four cross-bars, the floor and the fire-wall equipped with wire pins which will facilitate the assembly after the painting. The rudder bar and the control column have the turnbuckles attached. It seems that some colours will be added soon.

The work on the cockpit is completed.
I have added 22 rigging lines and the control lines which will go to the elevator, rudder and float rudder. Also - the pre-painted black bezels from HGW and scratch-built switches enriched the instrument panel. And finally - the ad-hoc paper "floor" airbrushed in linen colour was glued to the bottom of the truss and it will cover the little representative seam line at the bottom of the fuselage which would pop out here and there when the innards are enclosed.

Very nice work, I don't really like working with resin (guess I've been put off by some rather poor resin conversions in 1/72), but this model looks quite good! Interesting idea with the paper to hide a difficult seam, too!

Wonderful...as always. :)
Interesting idea with the paper to hide a difficult seam, too!
Indeed!
Robin

Your interior work is Gorgeous as always! Like the others I am impressed by your solution using the paper to cover the seam!
RAGIII

Thanks...
Work on the resin goes on. The fuselage has the major surface faults filled, is now closed, the seams filled with liquid CA glue which is now left to set.

The cardboard jig prepared and the upper wing is under assembly. Luckily the geometry of the wing cellule will allow to use the same jig for the assembly of the lower wings to the fuselage.

Terrific work all around! The jig provided will certainly assist in the construction!

Really nice job on the pit with the details and WOW that was a lot of bubbles to fill in the resin .

Nice work on a great looking machine. That is peppered with air holes though.

Great build and really interesting subject. Will be another gem.

This is shaping up to be another great build.
I was confused by the apparent 12 flight control lines rigged from the cockpit.
Then I realised there are shadows from the lighting used to take the photographs :o
Mike

Coming along nicely;curious about those pinholes,I just checked another Lukgraph kit in my stash it is virtually flawless.
Dave.
-
On and on...
Clerget complete with stains of burnt castor oil, test-fit to the fuselage nose under the cowling. Push rod tappets painted brass, valve rockers copper, as per the instructions in Taurus Models Clergets. The electric wires are also courtesy of Taurus - Lukasz sent me some lengths of that fine copper wire he usually adds to his engines.
Lower wings attached to the fuselage. The joints, those on the upper wings, too, filled and CA glue curing - round two, and hopefully the last one.

Very nice so far! Lovely subject in any case.
Quite a few pinholes, though. Things like that kind off put me off resin kits, but I guess I do miss out on some nice subjects, though!

Great engine and flawless interior. This will fit well into your row of masterpieces in the cabinet.
Andreas

Recent progress:
- beaching gear elements cleaned and assembled for airbrushung
- Lewis and bombs with carriers prepared (3D printed bits are very fine)
- ailerons and elevator have the hinges reinforced with wire bits
- control horns for the ailerons scratch built from Contrail profile and armed with rigging end-stations.

Still can't get over the amount of filling you had to do on all those air bubbles , but those details are looking mighty sweet . Looking forward to the painting . :)
Terri
-
Terri:
I've just received my 'Ansaldo' version and it doesn't seem to have as many resin 'blow holes'.
That said it's inevitable with resin kits that you'll get some surface imperfections like this - one of the joys working resin kits,
Mike
-
Outstanding details Przemo! Moving along nicely!
RAGIII
-
Thank you for your kind comments. And a brief explanation regarding air bubbles. Not all white dots seen in the photos represent the filled bubbles. The tiny irregular white spots are in fact inherent to the resin I have in my copy, and they are not a problem. The surface there is usually flat as it should be. Contrary to that the circular white dots are indeed the cross sections of Evergreen profile bits I used to fill the holes that I drilled at some places where the surface had some indents, usually not due to air bubbles. I have already worked on far worse resin that the one in this kit.
-
Now all the replacement control horns are prepared - here those for elevators, rudder and tail-float-rudder. I decided the mere butt joint wil not be sufficient to bear the load from tightened control lines, so I decided to reinforce the elevator and rudder ones with wire bits.

Well , wasn't I fooled !!! ::) Thanks for clearing up the air bubble thingy . I just never seen resin like that and I do have a fair amount of them in the stash . Nice job on the control horns , I would made a mess out them trying to drill them for eyelets , it's true ! I'm talking to the point I would be re-making the piece :o I do like your method with the longer pin so when the horns are in place they line up perfect , I'm going to steal this from you if you don't mind ...... You'll get a free hug !

Hello, what are you using for your internal eyelets?

-
Hello, what are you using for your internal eyelets?
Ryan
I did not quite catch, what you meant by internal. Anyway, the eyelets themselves are from Bob's Buckles. The Gaspatch C-type turnbuckles have the eyelets, which I do myself from pieces of twisted copper wire, trimmed to the required length. Hope this is clear. ;)
-
Ahh sorry, I meant for the "inside" rigging around the cockpit framing.
Thanks for the response.

I'm a Lukgraph fan and have the 1/72 Albatross C.III and N.T.2B nearing the top of the stash for attention in the near future.

After the fabulous 3-weeks holidays in the WNW homeland, including the obligatory visit to Omaka, I am back to reality and this includes also my modelling bench. ;)
The recent days were spent on preparations of wing cellule elements. Unfortunately, there were some geometry corrections necessary, the most severe was moving the lower wings with their centre-piece roots by 2mm to the rear - I failed to check it earlier and now had to cut off the complete lower wings and reattach them in proper locations. My earlier prepared jig came very useful again.
The wire pins in the struts are trimmed, the locations in the wings and the fuselage retraced and drilled.
I have also removed the unnecessary stitching from the fuselage along the rear centre struts.
Now it will be time to prepare the rigging stations.

Thank you, everyone.
Next week gone, under the sign of coronavirus. Still, some time at the bench, almost everyday. And I could make some more steps forward. Decals shaded. Some dirt from the engine added. Rigging stations with eyelets at the top wing ang Gaspatch turnbuckles at the lower wing - attached and tested for pull-out strength. Some smaller bits like the windscreen and fairings for floats rigging crossing prepared. Control surfaces armed with control horns and the local rigging. The final assembly is looming...

Nothing magical here. Just Aizu masking tape and postshading with self made smoke, a very transparent mix of clear and a droplet of black. Sprayed thinly on white and less thinly on red and blue. I prefer to do it separately from earlier base colour shading.
-
PrzemoL
I'm not sure if I got it right. You mask the rib tapes, then pre-shade and paint the wing. Then apply decals and when good and dry you tape the decals on the rib tape line and apply the home made smoke as you described. Am I close?
Amazing results.

At last I have started the final assembly. First, I prepared the "undercarriage" but will attach it after completing the wing cellule. The work on the latter started with attaching the cabane struts. Here I used an inspiration from this forum (sorry, I do not remember exactly who once showed the idea with cardboard jig with holes drilled for strut pins).
I am using the longer setting two-component Uhu glue rather than usual CA. The former allows more than enough time to control geometry.

The jig to control the dihedral was made using the scale drawings from Windsock Datafile.
The holes for strut pins in the upper wing were also retraced according to those drawings. Having these drilled, a couple of weeks later, I have just measured the distances and made the fake upper wing centre section jig from the kit part :-) Hope this makes sense ;-)
And in the meantime I have rigged the wing cellule and started attaching the undercarriage.

Do my models always look good, Stephen? I suppose that it is you, who is always so kind. Anyway, your kind comments make it all much easier. I have to admit, this kit is not an easy one. I have just spent a couple of hours attaching the main floats. After some minor disasters with pulled out turnbuckles, not quite fitting struts, etc. this is where I came. No more posing to photos, now the engine and the horizontal stabiliser are fixed for good.
