Title: Paint stripping
Post by: Gisbod on December 27, 2019, 01:01:28 AM
Hell all,

I know it’s been asked before, just can’t remember how!

I need to strip a paint job, lacquer acrylic undercoat and Humbrol enamel top coat?

Many thanks

Guy

I still use brake fluid and a tooth brush and cloth. I have heard others use green degreaser. In addition I am sure there are some specialty strippers out there, I just don't use them. IHTH

99% Iso Propyl Alchohol will take acrylic down to the plastic Guy without damaging the surfaces - not sure about the enamel though so maybe test on an undersurface first?

I have used with complete success the Mr Muscle oven cleaner 'treatment' before - put parts in large sealable poly bag, spray in a copious amount of oven cleaner, seal bag and leave overnight. Wash parts under a tap following day.  Resurected previously painted parts for a 1/48 Helldiver quite recently - all back to like new overnight. The parts had been painted a long time before I got it and were probably painted with Humbrol but can't be ceratin - again you really need to do a test.

Hope that helps a little more

Here is a photo from My DR1 build. Had to strip one side. Managed to strip what I needed and save the rest. Stripped as stated above. It had a base of acrylic beige and was covered with Drooling Bulldog Lacquer red.

No it's not that bad actually Guy, the Mr Muscle settles to a liquid over night - just a matter of bringing the parts out and washing them under a tap.

Using IPA is though but it's ideal for small parts or areas that have gone wrong. It's okay to use on canopies too.

Thank you both,

I have now managed to avoid the stripping by a bit of sanding and a re paint. But this is a skill I need to have in my locker!

The problem with the oven cleaner is I wanted to strip the airframe but leave the cockpit intact...

Hi Guy - been out of things for a day or two  :(

Guy

Careful application of IPA it is then - but as you say it is a bit messy! As always best to try it on something that doesn't matter too much first to get the hang of it - good luck with it
