With the Fokker D.VII done...time for a new build.....my first two-seater.
The Roland C.IIa...
(https://i.postimg.cc/QCc7f188/IMG-3680.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
It says C.II on the box, but it is a C.IIa.
I had a problem choosing a scheme...several options, but none I really like.
The Kasta 2 option with the black rudder is nice, but I don't like a shark mouth and I certainly don't like curtains painted on the windows. :-\
On the WNW website I found photos of a Kasta 2 lineup with a plane without either and no number on the rudder to make things easy.
This plane has a black rear fuselage... and a black rudder and fuselage band (like most Kasta 2 planes). 3 tone camouflage scheme. Light green, dark green and red brown.
Standard rudder, Orcarina exhaust.
(https://i.postimg.cc/t4YZ6rqF/Kasta-2-black-rear-fuselage.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
This is a blown up part of the photo seen on WNW...I hope it's okey to show this.
Seems to be a very good kit, but I'll find something to modify for sure. ;D
Robin.

I eagerly await to see you work your magic on this one.

I am looking forward to your progress on this one!

Here we go...sort of.
(https://i.postimg.cc/BZYNbjQj/IMG-3735.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Tidied and cleaned my desk. :)
(https://i.postimg.cc/j5vcz5Hk/IMG-3727.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Okey...interesting start of a manual.
A 1/48 camera made of 7 parts...clear lens and a lot of PE parts. Errr....that can wait. :o
(https://i.postimg.cc/c4vhndrX/IMG-3730.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Impressive PE set. The observer's MG gets a lot of attention here. Very nice!
(https://i.postimg.cc/C51NJgJM/IMG-3728.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
And an unexpected, but really cool surprice.
Sprue A, B, C, E and F. Uhhh....no D?
(https://i.postimg.cc/02hfGhSx/IMG-3732.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
There it is! A late version rudder and tail...that's awesome.
Not mentioned in the manual. I might do a late Roland C.IIa instead. The "white 6" perhaps?
I have time to figure that out...interior first.
(https://i.postimg.cc/zvckccPC/IMG-3733.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
And there is work to do. ;D
At first glance:
Open the frames, new seats and some more additions and alterations. Nice! :)
Btw...this will go a lot slower than the previous two builds.
Busy time of the year for me, so less bench time, so please bear with me. :-[
Anyway...more soon,
Robin
-
Two aeras to watch out for . The lower wing fit and the rear top part of the fuselage ;)
It's a nice kit . Built it once and another which turned out to be a shelf queen and holding her own I might add .
Terri
-
Nice choice of livery Robin, something out of the ordinary.I like the way your workspace is organised, some good ideas I'm going to adopt.I presume the brandy assists the rigging process.
Cheers,
Dave.
-
A 'lubricant' for the fingers?
-
Thanks,
Terri....thanks...I'll dry fit and double check! :)
Ken...I love a good brandy....cognac, grappa, armagnac, etc.
In the dead of night, an espresso, a brandy and good music. That's when I love building models. All quiet, no distraction.
Sneak preview...
(https://i.postimg.cc/pT7Fxy3g/IMG-3738.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Opened the frames and gave the (late type) exhaust the love and attention it deserves. :)
More soon,
Robin
-
Excellent choice ! You have made a great start with opening up the frames!
RAGIII
-
That looks to be a lovely kit: I have seen several made up in photos but never a real one. I will be very interested to follow allong.
Stephen.
-
Great start on a lovely kit!
Andreas
-
Nice start on the clean up Robin :)
Terri
-
Thanks all. :)
Opening the frames is like opening a can of worms.
Because of it, I have to change, add, make, alter...you name it...about everything. :o
(https://i.postimg.cc/XJHQXMr5/Roland-C-IIa-001.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
It's a challenge to get the puzzle together and even more to make it structuraly sound.
But...getting there. :)
Robin
-
Looking good Robin, your results are worthy of your efforts. :D
-
Great wok Robin, and well worth your efforts. It's detailing like this that "make the model" and you are off to a spectacular start! Great work already, I'm looking forward to following this Build. :)
Cheers,
Lance
-
Fine start, such preparation work will pay as open frames give a realistic look to every model.
Ciao
Giuseppe

Excellent progress, Robin!
You have hit the ground running with this build. Nice!
Cheers,
vB :)
-
Great start Robin!
Recently I ordered some paints from Drooling bulldog WWI range, and this Roland kit from my stash is a good candidate to try those. So I will follow closely!
But before I should finish some shelf queens ...
Cheers,
Frank
-
Your interior work is looking awesome! Opening those panels certainly expanded your Opportunities!
RAGIII
-
Personally I think that the kind of extra details that you are adding are worthwhile because it turns a kit into a model. The details are very well done and I can imagine already that you have many more extras lined up.
Stephen.
-
Thanks all. I try my best. :)
This is the plane I'm building...the Schusta 6 "white 6"...
(https://i.postimg.cc/wMP42WQ4/white-6.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
The photo is an enlarged cut out of a photo seen on WNW.
Source....WNW Roland C.IIa (late) photo gallery:
http://www.wingnutwings.com/ww/productdetail?productid=3110&cat=1#
Late version rudder and tail and late exhaust used on Linke-Hofmann built C.IIa's.
Black rudder, no fuselage stripes on this one. 3 tone soft edge camouflage scheme.
I worked whole day on it, but much time needed to measure where to put that 0,5 x 0,5 mm...0,25 mm thick piece of Evergreen. :-X
Figuring out the observer's seat attachment points...a couple of hours...plastic and glue...1 minute. ;D
Stuff like that.

(https://i.postimg.cc/x8qFKrMb/Roland-C-IIa-003.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Getting close to some paint though. :)

It is looking really good and all of that new detail is fantastic! However and even if I probably would do the same, how much of this will be visible after closing up the fuselage? Is it something one should do if building this model?
/Fredrik
-
Thanks,

I think it's worth the effort, because the two "holes" are fairly large and the top wing will be fixed to te fuselage. It won't block sight.
And then there the windows. I don't think you can see much through them, but at least they let light in.
Not even checked them yet, when they're not okey, I'll replace them with something better.
Most of the interior will be painted a pale blue-grey (Vallejo 71.046)
(https://i.postimg.cc/nrbZRNQs/Roland-C-IIa-004.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

The Walfish taking a bath...

When dry....paint.

It is great to know that your outstanding interior work will be seen after the fuselage is closed!
RAGIII

I too am happy to see that your efforts will be visible! It's a fun looking aircraft, I might have to buy one?! /Fredrik
-
Thanks guys. :)
Slow but steady progress...
(https://i.postimg.cc/nc4mNvSX/Roland-C-IIa-007.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Still a lot to do before I can close the fuselage, but that's fine.
I kept the interior light, because I'll treat it with oils later on...so it will get darker.
More soon,
Robin

Hey Robin , nice attention to the details so far and your paint work , nice and clean . Thumbs up ! 8)

The interior painting looks Fantastic! I especially like the seat / cushion and the tank!
RAGIII

Your detail work is fantastic, Robin. Thanks for posting your pics!

Thanks T. and thanks guys,
I use the WNW manual as reference and adjust accordingly...as much as possible. :-X
Had to place the window glass. The kit parts are clear and very acceptable.
I was afraid of glue and paint stains, so I removed all the paint from the frames and was very careful with the glue.
(https://i.postimg.cc/13GVmbFs/Roland-C-IIa-010.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Phew!
Worked hard on the interior, but it's very time consuming. Slow progress....

RAGIII

Really nice interior. Your effort pays off!

Great work, Robin. Your extra detailing in the interior adds to the model.

Spectacular work on the innards, Robin! Lovin' every step of this project.

Apart from placing the observer's seat and a spare ammo drum for the LMG 14/17...this side is done.
Other side still to do: windows, some handles and also a spare drum, so not much left to do on the inside.
More soon,
Robin :)

She is taking shape nicely so far Robin , looking forward on the rest of the pit coming together 8)
Terri

Robin, with the open frames and all the additional work you converted this into a 1/48 WNW kit :o
Simply fantastic, I like it a lot!

Thanks T. and Frank. :)

Pfff....well...yes.
I worked on the pit with the WNW manual on screen. A blessing and a curse.
I copied as much as I could...made the auxiliary fuel tank, the bomb dropping handle, a new observer's chair and much more.
Partly because I liked it, but also because I sometimes thought...when I skip this or that...someone will notice and I'll be frowned upon.
That's stupid. :-\
I kept the blue-grey light...probably a lighter shade then used, but a pit is a dark dungeon when closed up. when it's a lighter shade...at least some of what I did will still be visible....I hope.
Finished the interior...
(https://i.postimg.cc/L5MbMs0B/Roland-C-IIa-013.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
And closed the fuselage...
(https://i.postimg.cc/C5H6MV3y/Roland-C-IIa-014.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
I look forward to do the "outside".
More soon,

Again I must comment on Just How Great your interior has turned out! Absolutely Stunning work!

........ and I'll add a strong "second" to Rick's comment; wonderful detail and in 1:48 Scale no less!

Great interiors, a whole model inside the model.
Ciao

Thanks guys,
The final interior hurdle to take was placing the observer's seat (a bashed Dr.I seat).
Was done after closing the fuselage...scary, but it worked.
After that the top with the MG ring...was a good fit. Only minor filling and sanding needed.
Also made the two "skylight" windows with a grinding bit and Airscale bezels. This is the only scratchbuilding needed on the exterior.
Well...I can't think of anything else...uhmm...perhaps a bomb rack, but not sure about that yet. ;D
(https://i.postimg.cc/zfck2H5P/Roland-C-IIa-016.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
The "forgotten" late version tail fin and rudder...
(https://i.postimg.cc/L5d32dJt/Roland-C-IIa-015.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
The kit designer put a lot of effort in this kit, but for some strange reason Eduard decided to not use it's full potential.
Stange and even a bit sad. All the parts needed to build a late version are included.
Now getting ready for the paint job. :)
(https://i.postimg.cc/Tw5Jz232/Roland-C-IIa-017.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
More soon, but again...busy time of the year for me started and that will continue until I can open a bottle of Champagne to welcome the new year.
Robin :)

Your Roland is moving along nicely. Looking forward to seeing the results of your masking!
RAGIII
-
What a nice build so far.
Andreas
-
Thanks Rick and Andreas :)
(snip). Looking forward to seeing the results of your masking!
RAGIII
Me too! ;D
I was afraid the 1 mm tape I have is too wide, but it's what I have.
The pre-shading...
Top.
(https://i.postimg.cc/rs7BYX7v/Roland-C-IIa-018.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
And underside.
(https://i.postimg.cc/BZyfvHtM/Roland-C-IIa-019.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Pre-shading done with black-grey...I like to work from dark to light with increasingly lighter shades.
Don't ask me why...it's not some kind of wisdom I have. Just the way I do it. ::)
Note 1: the large one is the bottom wing...the 2 halves are the top wings.
Note 2: the tailplanes are also the larger late type.
After the light blue (Vallejo 70.906 Pale Blue) and two more layers with increasing amounts of white added.
(https://i.postimg.cc/3Jv50Nv7/Roland-C-IIa-020.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
I don't think the 1 mm tape was a problem after all. Probably more of an issue with translucent CDL....not so much with a painted wing.
Tomorrow gloss, decals and semi gloss. Probably time for more jobs.
Robin :)
-
Your moving right along with this one Robin , looking good so far :)

Ah, nice. I wondered how you achieve that rib effect.

Exactly what I wanted to say! And Robin always says, he is very busy otherwise :o

Thanks all,
I had two minor issues with the decals.
First...the crosses don't come with a white background. ;D
I didn't check...just expected them on a white square background. No problem of course.
Second the decals are very brittle...the first one became a jigsaw puzzle....the second, with all the love and care I could give...3 pieces. :-\
Fixed with paint. Looks okeyish with varnish on top.
(https://i.postimg.cc/x8qxmbw3/Roland-C-IIa-022.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Licked my wounds and did some more....

Looks good. Whatever's in the glass looks good too.
Glad I'm not the only one who partakes of nerve calming agents when modelling
-
This is looking good, Robin. The pre-shading worked out okay.
-
The Camo is looking Terrific! The marking repair seems to have worked well!
RAGIII
-
Thanks T., thanks guys,
I find it very difficult to keep the pre-shading with the 3 colour camouflage...even though I used the colours next to eachother...not stacked.
Soft edges means free hand airbrushing with no room for error....with this scale it's a real challenge for me. :o
Wings are kinda easy, but the fuselage was/is tough.
There is some overspray and paint damage here and there, so I need to revisit all the colours. Hope I won't go from bad to worse.
At least I can mask the partly black tail fin and rudder and the white on the top wing.
Fingers crossed the rest of the decals will behave themselves.
And then there's the odd looking "6" on the fin...still no clue how to do that.
Perhaps I'll ask our masking wizard FAf/Fredrik to help me out.
More soon,
Robin :)
-
Lovely spray-job, Robin!
She is starting to come together nicely.
Cheers,
vB ;)
-
Of course I can try to help out... if you're prepared to wait a short while you can have masks for the remaining crosses as well.
/Fredrik
-
Thanks Bob and Fredrik.
I see what I can do myself first, but when I fail...I gladly accept your help. :)
One thing will be easier with the top wing crosses...the white background runs from edge to edge, so not a square.
Seen on the "white 6" photo. Kinda unusual for a Roland C.IIa.
Robin
-
Finished painting
(https://i.postimg.cc/SN5tZz8s/Roland-C-IIa-024.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Fixed the overspray, repaired the paint damage, white fields for the crosses and the black tail.
Radiators are on...ready for varnish.
The interior is still visible...
(https://i.postimg.cc/BQtVcCjk/Roland-C-IIa-023.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
So I think it was worth the effort. Besides...it was fun to do.
Spandau will cover the seam in front of the cockpit, so I didn't try hard to get that flush.
Robin
-
Robin, your speed * quality value is impressive!
I hope the lower wing fits to the fuselage without putty? This is often a potential problem on Eduard kits, so I added the lower wing before painting, or remove the wings from middle part.
I guess it will look great once mounted!
Cheers,
Frank
-
The interior is still visible...
So I think it was worth the effort. Besides...it was fun to do.
Nice to see the outside and the inside! Your efforts are well worth showing. And besides... if you thought it was fun, then it was worth it regardless! 🙂🙂
/Fredrik
-
Looks excellent! It is great to see the interior is visible!
RAGIII
-
Thanks gentlemen,
Frank...the under wing / fuselage fit was...and still is...wonky. :-\
I had to make the choise...wing on before paint...or after paint.
Before paint, there's more you can do to make it seamless, but it will make painting and placing eyelets in the nick much harder.
I decided to go for...wing on later and live with it. The front seam is (to a certain extent) correct.
The rear seam...when it's bad, I'll deploy my secret weapon....a bomb rack. ;D
The decals went on more or less ok, only minor cursing and a little touch up work.
(https://i.postimg.cc/8c6hxY8n/Roland-C-IIa-025.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Varrnish still wet here.
Still that darn white 6 to go.
Before I consede defeat and ask Fredrik to help me out...I give it a try myself.
(https://i.postimg.cc/wxC5D9LK/Roland-C-IIa-026.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
(https://i.postimg.cc/CMBHZRZH/Roland-C-IIa-027.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
It's a start. :)
And finally done with masking the windows...
(https://i.postimg.cc/8cQHkGbV/Roland-C-IIa-028.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
I replaced the masking after each layer of paint...5 times. :-X
Glad that's over and glad they're fine.
I can now do the eyelets...when done the wings can go on.
Robin
-
Coming along very nicely Robin . Your '6' is far better then what I could come up with , looking forward on seeing how it turns out .
Terri
-
Brilliant work! You will have that six sorted in no time! /Fredrik
-
Excellent work on the 6 and the crosses look great in place. Really coming along now!
RAGIII

Thanks milady, thanks guys. :)
With the bomb rack in mind, I went on a search for 1/48 PuW 12,5 kg bombs...with little hope finding any.
But, to my amazement...
(https://i.postimg.cc/dtfZdYXM/Pu-W-12-5-kg.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
For less then 3 pounds...problem solved. :)
With dinner guests tonight...not much time today, so eyelets have to wait.
Still found a couple of nice small jobs I could do, so it's not a complete wasted day.
Modified the water tank, finished the exhaust and replaced the tree trunk sized tail struts with brass tubes.

Top wings on...

Good work! I like the hand painted look! Using masks doesn't have to be trickier than this. /F

Great work!
I guess the 6 was hand painted, so your way to apply it makes it more authentic than a perfect decal.
With mounted wings this bird looks nice. :)
Cheers,
Frank

Nice work there, Robin.

Really coming together now. Looks exceptional with the upper wing mounted!
RAGIII

Really great work, Robin. What did you cut the 6 with? That kind of curl isn't easy with a standard blade.

A brand new one, but no handle. Cut on a piece of styrene sheet.
And while I'm here...
(https://i.postimg.cc/5tnPTHhG/Roland_C.IIa_038.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Rigging done....and actually enjoyed it! :o
Robin

The rigging looks excellent...Straight and tight!
RAGIII
-
Really nice job on the rigging Robin , looks like you found what works well for you for the rigging :)
Terri

Thanks :)
With the rigging out of the way, I did the Spandau and "roll bar"...
(https://i.postimg.cc/QdFBkypv/Roland_C.IIa_040.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Heavily modified the Spandau...
(https://i.postimg.cc/T3BKkJ01/Roland_C.IIa_039.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Prop done, landing gear done...
(https://i.postimg.cc/bNCDnh2Q/Roland_C.IIa_041.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
And thus she can stand on her feet :)
(https://i.postimg.cc/MTSvwZh8/Roland_C.IIa_042.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Left to do: some control surface cables, observer's mg, landing gear and claw break wires, bomb rack and most of the weathering.
More soon,
Robin :)
-
Your next biplane will start and fly into the completed section soon :o
The result including rigging is really nice. Good luck with the last details!
Cheers,
Frank
-
The exhaust is still on ! Good for you Robin , or I'm I jumping the gun and you did have to glue it back on .....tell me it ain't so . I would have knock it off a few times already with very colourful words backing it up . Good thing my neighbour doesn't understand German ! The cat does though !
Terri
-
Thanks Terri and Frank :)
This build is a very smooth ride. No serious issues with the kit, apart from the lower wing fit both of you mentioned before.
I made small mistakes. Most I could fix, but not all. Lessons learned for the next one.
It was a nice surprise I could build a C.IIa final production version. In fact...the kit is a late (and final) C.IIa.
The WNW manual helped me a lot
Terri....the exhaust stayed on....a makeshift jig kept it safe. :)
I now look forward to make the observer's mg. 15 parts! :o
Next on the bench will be Julius Buckler's Albatros D.III "Mops", but more about that later.
Robin :)
-
Robin,
You've done a great job to this point and your Build Log is a pleasure to follow, a great model!
"I made small mistakes. Most I could fix, but not all. Lessons learned for the next one."
I've been building model aircraft for now, sixty-five plus years, and this comment of yours is absolutely appropriate to my efforts; there is no "perfect" model, trust me! As long as you enjoy the experience that's the true measure of success. :)
Cheers,
Lance

Thanks gentlemen, you're all very kind.
I started with the observer's Parabellum, but the bombs set from Mirage arrived, so I switched to the bomb rack.
Parabellum is the absolute last thing that will go on anyway. :)

These 12,5 kg bombs are just 15 mm long.
I'll make the bomb rack from 0,3mm brass tube, cut up Airscale cockpit bezels and Evergreen.
More soon,

A couple of control surface wires, weathering and Parabellum left to do. The end is nigh! 8)

Thanks. :)
The Parabellum is a real pièce de résistance...Eduard at it's best.

Four weeks of pure pleasure!
I think this kit is a gem. A very accurate C.IIa (late), with the (hidden) option to build a final production version.
I'll post more photo's in the Completed models section.
Thanks for all the encouragements...much appreciated.
Robin :)

Robin,
This has been a great build to follow along with. I look forward to your next endeavor.
Thanks for posting,

Spectacular finish Robin, I'll comment in detail in the "finished" section. :)

Brilliant work, especially with the problematic decals and the missing six and probably a bunch of other hurdles you've had to clear during this build! /Fredrik

Thanks guys,
Fredrik... very few hurdles, some more mistakes, a dash of sloppiness and outright stupidity, a couple of details I didn't notice until it was too late to add them.
The kit is not to blame.
Proud of the interior, the prop painting and masking the "white 6".
Pleased about building the "final" version. It makes it a unique C.IIa...I think. Fairly happy with the rigging...I get the hang of it and that's a win.
I could have done a better job, mainly on the underside. I simply didn't investigate that very well.
Most annoying...the missing pairs of drainage holes. Only noticed those a couple of days ago, but I didn't dare to start drilling holes into a 99% finished model. :-\
Overall...happy with the result. :)
