Title: 1/16 Hasegawa Sopwith Camel
Post by: Composite Guru on October 24, 2019, 06:52:00 PM
Hi I’m new here and thought I would share a few pics of my current build.

I’ve always fancied building one of the 1/8 scale wooden versions but they are really expensive and quite huge so decided on taking a punt on the smaller plastic version.
So far I’ve enjoyed everything about the kit and really looking forward to finishing it.

I’ve learnt a lot about how to create wood effect from using oil paints over a base colour. I think it looks like wood in that scale.

The kit comes with all the rigging but unfortunately it isn’t that accurate as most relies on just tying the cord through loops in the structure.
I’ve decided to hand make all the turnbuckles as you can’t  buy 1/16 turnbuckles off the shelf. It’s been fun making them though.

Here are a few pics of the build so far.

Finally finished rigging the Wings. Just got the Fuselage to do now.
Rigging has really been quite enjoyable rather than a chore. Looks pretty realistic I think. The original kit asks to thread one piece of cotton throughout the whole wing. This is not very accurate hence doing what I’ve done.

Not too long until I can start assembling the whole thing.
https://thumbsnap.com/s/AbDHRwX5.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/AbDHRwX5](https://thumbsnap.com/s/AbDHRwX5.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/AbDHRwX5 (http://[img)

After rigging the tail area I decided to fit the cockpit floor with all the control cables installed.
Treading them all through the Fuselage was fun making sure they didn’t twist around each other.
Just need to temporarily fix the control stick in the centre some how so that I can tension the control cables.
Also installed the magazines and engine oil tank too and then finished off the dashboard.

Next thing to do is add all the fuel pipes from all the various system parts to make it look a bit more realistic.

https://thumbsnap.com/s/u4OThZVZ.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/u4OThZVZ](https://thumbsnap.com/s/u4OThZVZ.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/u4OThZVZ (http://[img)

Ok so I have the Rudder and Elevator all rigged and tensioned. Made up some jigs out of lolly sticks to hold the column and rudder bar central.
Cockpit coming together slowly. Adding as much copper wire as I can to join up all the fuel system parts.

Finally got the wings on. Getting the thing sat flat was the hardest bit.
Just the engine and a few other panels to go on and finish ringing it.

You are taking this Kit to a whole new dimension, Rick has used the word "incredible" and I certainly second that! Lovely work. great detail added and very real looking in all respects. Wonderful Model!

Agree with the others on what a great job! I have this kit and would have just done a quick build of it - but can't now.  Did you strip and repaint the metal colored parts or leave them in the color they come in and weather them?

Impressive and tempting! Well done on the wood!

Thanks for the comments. I do try my best to make my models look realistic. It is worthwhile in the end.

As for comments about the metallic parts. I did strip them and repaint. The fuel tank did need doing as there was a join that needed filling. Plated parts never look right though so I would do this every time.

Nearly finished. Just the prop to go.

I’m not liking the plastic version supplied with the kit so I’m going to make one from wood.
Intension is to make it the same way as the originals and stack layers of template cut veneer and sculpt the prop by hand.
Going to be interesting.

Thanks. Do you have a build thread?

I would like to see your work on this. I'm a casual modeller so I suspect yours will be better than this effort.  ;D

Looking forward to seeing the Prop. If it's anything like the Camel, it will be perfect - well done!

Thanks for the comments lads.

As for the Prop, this may take a while longer but I will update as soon as I get on with it. I've never attempted a wooden prop before so am going to take it easy.

That is the work of someone who is considerably more than a "casual modeller". I would have used the phrase master modeller. The colours and weathering, rigging and all other aspects are exceptional.

Stephen.

Thanks Stephen.

Ok what I mean is I don’t make many models. I tend to just spend a lot of time making them. I’m still getting to grips with weathering etc. I find it very hard to achieve the right look.

More progress.

Not happy with the plastic prop in the kit I decided to make my own from walnut and beech veneer.

Bonded the veneer together using PVA wood glue, clamped and waited 2 days to fully dry.

Scaled a drawing from the internet of a standard British Wooden Propeller from that era to template from.

I have profiled one side and it seems to have come out really nice. Well chuffed with the look and finish.

Excuse the upside down photo. Not sure what’s happened there. :)

Thanks for all the comments. I’m truly happy with my first attempt at carving a prop. It’s been a real challenge to get it right.

It’s been pointed out that the striped type was not really used on British aircraft which I know is incorrect. I just wanted to put something a bit more interesting on the model. It’s not going in a competition for accuracy so most people that visit my home will have no idea. Lol

There are restored Camels with them on so I’m happy of that.
