Thanks Rick , looking forward to having you follow along in the adventure  :)

Made start on freeing up some of the parts , mainly the engine and few other parts for clean up . I also made a new firewall with the correct cut outs . This fits perfectly with in the inner ring on Rodens part . The Brengun PE set I back the rear bulk head with .10 thou card to give more strength .

A Siemens-Schuckert D.III is a nice little bullet, your selected livery is nice!
One day I will also build the second 1/48 one in my stash, to use the second half of the Aviattic decals 8)

Happy modeling,
Frank

Looking good Terri,

I now have a Roden 1/32 Albatros I in the pile - having not made Roden before I’ll be interested in seeing how this pans out.

Ps lovely scheme!

Thanks gentlemen for tagging along .

Frank , I still have an older Eduard kit and new release , one flashbacks and another Roden one as well as another Koster kit  ;)

Guy , Roden kits are nice kits . I have build many of their 48 scale offerings . Detail can be soft in some areas and small fit issues , but they are great kits !

Ken , a week off = lots of bench time  ;)

That looks an interesting subject Terri. That is not a subject that I have ever tackled but I understand that they were quite lively machines to fly. Will be watching this with much interest.

Enjoy your holiday break and keep us all posted on progress.

Hi Ian , yup another one  :) This is the one I won in the GB and couldn't wait to start it . I do have another in the stash  ;)

Being enjoying my time in front of bench . Nice to be able to kick back and relax . Firewall is ready for paint . The bolts are from Grant line of products . Ammo bin was back off with plastic card 0.10 and the gun cables added . Cockpit floor got some details as well . The front former was removed and replaced with plastic strips 0.30 x 0.30 . Runners on the floor are 0.10 x 0.30

Thanks Rick  :) With morning coffee I started doing some black basing in prep of the metal coat . Rear former got sprayed Tamiya deck tan for the linen , still have the wooden frame work to paint . And I decided to back the PE parts for the cockpit framing with .10thou card . The PE parts are just to thin for this and won't look right . I super glue them down to scrap card and started drilling holes inside the frames . Once the centers are cleaned out then I will cut around them freeing them from their tomb .

Caffeine is always a plus Ken  ;) Cheers !

Thanks FAf  :) Yes there is a wide range of liveiers on WW 1 aircraft and I'm always finding new ones .

Side frames is now all cleaned up and ready and I made a start on the seat . The cushion which isn't so great is made using .20 thou card layer and I just started hacking way until the use of a power tool came out (dremel ) followed by a drill bit and buttons . Also added the piping around the cushion as well .

Terri, you made a good progress without the need to go to work ;)

The wood is great, all the fine detail too.

What I not like are the water pipe pushrods on the engine :o
It should look like this:

Source: wikimedia.org

Me would replace them with some metal ... but may be it's only my AMS (Advanced Modeling Syndrom) and you should not care  ::)

Ya , don't think I will quit my day job just yet there guys ...but thanks ! :)

Rick , I thought you would like the white glue for the turnbuckles .

Frank , thanks for sharing the photo . There are a few things which need to be corrected with the engine , but this would be a huge undertaking .

Okay this is from the weekend but was waiting for paint to dry . Rear cockpit panel is now weathered . Seat is ready to go now minis the seatbelts . Still have to but the buggers together . Not overly please with how the seat cushion turned out , but not bad for a first crack at it . Engine has its base colors on and ready for further detail painting and weathering .

Hey , thanks a lot Lance for checking her out and the positive feedback  8)

I can assure you I will be following along on your next one . Have you chosen a scheme for it yet ?

Seatbelts are now installed and the halves close up , lower chin in place and upper decking along with the fire wall .The lower wing doesn't fit very well and I ended up going to thin on the right side and took a bit of damage , but very easily fix to do . Under side will take some work with filling and sanding . Not as bad as on the Koster kit though . So she is starting to look like an airplane now .

When your ready Lance let me know and I'll see what I have for profiles on the dark wood finish .

I do have a question for you . Did you remove the side access panels or did you just place the PE parts right on top ? More so on the right side of the fuselage .

"I do have a question for you . Did you remove the side access panels or did you just place the PE parts right on top ? More so on the right side of the fuselage . "
Terri,
I didn't remove the kit panels, just applied the PE versions over top. Looks like I also added a sheet of very thin styrene to the panels so I probably sanded down the originals.  I also used the "chin" underside panel on the cowling area sanded down to support the PE version IIRC. It's hard to tell on the Under Construction Board as Photo Bucket did their evil magic on the photos. This one from my hard drive might help.

This must be a speed build Terri! The cockpit interior looks great but it seems that you will have some work to do with that wing/fuselage joint. However I have no doubt that it will have disappeared by the time of your next post.

Stephen.

Post by: Alexis on October 15, 2019, 05:27:32 AM
Hi Lance , thanks for the reply back to my question . I did go back have a look at your build thread , but PB has held everything hostage . I ended up removing the panels and made a new scoop using a 1/48 scale Mustang drop tank . This was going well , even had it glued in place and decided to thin it out more and it took battle damage  :o I also removed the 2 vent scoops on the underside and once the PE panel is fixed in place . New scoops will be made out of 72 scale mustang drop drops . Lower part of the wing is filled and sanding waiting for primer to see how well I actually did !

Thanks Stephen for dropping by . Not a speed build . I had a week off and was able get a large amount done . Now that I'm back at work modeling time is on the weekends now and this weekend is thanksgiving so I get an extra day off for time in front of the bench .

Hey P , ja -don't full roll it . Only leave a slight curve to it . The brunish the lovers . I place super glue along the centerline and slid it into place , center it then hitting it with accelerant . Then I did the sides and finishing up at the tail end of the PE part .

The two vents aren't the kit parts . Those where sanded away and new ones made from 72 scale Mustang drop tanks .

This is making excellent progress: the PE panel really does look so much better than plastic. The engine is also looking very good.

It does make a huge difference on the lower gin . One could clean out the spaces , but this would take forever . I did this to Eduards 48 scale and that was a test of nerves on it own and very delicate . Weekend is coming so more progress will be made  :)

Well I didn't get as much done as I was hoping too . But I have covered new ground with the progress . I spend some time on the cowl . Had a fair bit of clean up do to mismatch molds leaving only part of the cowl lip . So what was left got sanded away , now it's all over my floor . This was replace with 0.4mm plastic rod . PE parts added to the tail skid . Landing gear felt left out so it got some details as well , struts are cleaned up and ready for brass pins . The mounting hole in the wings I filled with 1mm rod for a better platform to mount the struts . Wheels are also set to go . Just a few more bits and bobs and it's off to primer  :)
Tail feathers are cut free . The hinges were a mis-match on the other side , so new ones will be made .

After the week I had it was awesome to sit in front of the bench and just veg and focus on joyful things !

Tail plane is finish with new hinges made so now everything matches  on the top and bottom Landing struts and alex bar are pretty much set to go . I still need to do the rigging attachment points on the spreader bar . Bungee cord is made from sewing thread and super glued in place . This makes this a very strong unit . No wobble ! I made the pins from steel wire for extra strength . Rest of the struts are set for paint . For this I used brass pins . It will have the strength but a little flex if needed for lining this up . I ready for primer and can start painting and decaling .

Nice work, Terri.  Looks like you sanded of some heavy detail on the rudder?
Are those hand holds recessed in the fuse?
Title: Re: Rodens SSW D.III 1/32
Post by: Alexis on October 28, 2019, 10:09:39 AM
Thanks Fredrik and Ken

Yes Ken , those are hand holds recesse's in the fuselage . Kit ones where cut out and back with new boxes and 30x30 for the hand hold . The recesse's were lined with doped fabric and this will get paint later on in the build . Ya , the rudder look like a starving cow so I sanded it back a bit .

Weekend progress has come to end . Fuselage has it's white paint / wheels / top flying surfaces are only coated lightly with white . Ribs will get masked off and Tamiya smoke will be sprayed along the edges . Once removed , one more light coat of white to blend it together . Bottom sides get  different treatment . These ares will be sprayed black first . Ribs und spars plus the edges get masked off . Tamiya buff will be sprayed on . Masking removed followed by another light dusting of buff finishing this off with a few light coats of white . Shading I will do before the masking gets removed . Not pictured is the rudder which is also black based waiting for masking and more painting ! Cab struts are painted and the wood done on the inter struts . Landing gear got black based as well in prep for the metal coat . Guns I shot Tamiya black all over them and the cowl as well and just couldn't leave the spinner by itself - it got black as well . Prop is ready for further graining but this will be done with pencil crayon after a seal coat of flat varnish .

As everyone notes its looking really good and coming together nice

Yeah pinning the struts and other areas is a top idea - on my build of this I must have tried gluing that elevator four times and knocking it loose before I saw the light and put pins in it. That is now 100% SOP on any build :)

I still need to mask off the chin and spray this alum before i can start unmasking  , but more masking is on the way with the ribs and such starting tomorrow .

Sorry to say not much was done in front of the bench yesterday . Ended up spending time doing other things . I did get the chin sprayed alum and unmasked . Has some touch ups and left that to dry overnight . Pic's coming later today on this as soon as those damn camera batteries are charged !

Fresh batteries load in the camera and here is the end results of what she looks like with her stripes . Prop is finished with the wood effect now , decals on and clear coated with a touch of clear yellow . I have no proof that there is a white stripe on the lower fuselage . Only the profile posted on the first page of this blog and two other photo's in the book . The photo's show that the stripes were not neatly applied . I have started the masking of the ribs and I'm almost half way through that . Once that is done more pic's to follow .

Thanks guys for the kind comments about my washing machine drum  ;) Tell ya though , it was a challenge trying to get the masking on while the drum was spinning around ! Won't be doing that again any time soon  :o

It was a tricky masking job having the fuselage more like a barrel . Few more curves in there then a straight line . It was five hours masking the stripes only because I had to redo a few .

Hi Gary and thanks for dropping by and having a peak  :) It is a large cutting mat and one that I got a hack of deal on . There used to be a hobby hobby a block and half away from where I live . They closed up and I cot it on sale for 15 bucks ! plus tax . Less then 20 was a hell of deal . My old one was have the size and I paid double for it .

The shop still has a south side location , but they don't carry much kits and supplies any more . Most just RC stuff . Hobby Lobby is the name if my memory serves me correct . Lance might know ?

I really admire your patience with all that masking. One of the advantages(?) of not having an airbrush is that one is spared all of that trouble. Only downside is that one cannot get all of the subtle variations in colours....

Stephen.

Hi Stephen , thanks for the kind comments and dropping by . I used to hand paint everything until I got an airbrush and that open a whole new door . It has it's advantages and disadvantages though and I'm still learning .

Okay here is the end result of all that masking . Also spent some time on line reading reviews of HGW lozenge decals and it is recommended that these decals be coated with an over spray . So I will coat them with testors decal bonder before use . This should take care of any cracking or breaking and make them more flexible . Wheels are also ready for their decals as well .  :)

Thanks Rick , I hope it pays off in the end in what I'm looking for . Only my second time using transparent decals or is it my third ...

Guns are ready to go now . I dry brushed them with different shades of graphite over a semi gloss finish and I almost forgot to paint the inside of the cowl . So that is now done with a bit of alum paint and the engine support framing dark green .
Decals are the fuselage sides . The " 3" is from the spare box and is the closest that I can come up with to the font . The size is correct so that is a plus in my books . Not pic is the rudder which also has it decals applied . All of the lower lozenge is cut to shape , now just have to apply them . Until then ....

I was planning on using Rodens decals as a template but their bolts are wider so that idea was scrapped and did it the old fashion way . I notice that in my steel ruler no longer has a straight edge ( noticable on my straight cuts ) . Time for a new one ! I will let this dry over night or a few days , trim them and seal them before I start the rib tapes .

Good update, T. Lots of things done.  I especially like coloring on the guns.  Are you satisfied with the preshading you did under the decals?  It's a little hard to see the effect in the pictures.

I'm looking forward to seeing this completed.   ;)

Thanks Ken and Rick for your continuing support by following along  :)

Ken , am I pleased with the results of the shading ? Not overly pleased with it but I do like the results in the end . Doesn't photograph to well , but the effect is there . I should have went lighter with the filters . The decals aren't as transparent as the Aviattic lozenge is and I should have done a test and make adjustments from there . But I didn't  ::) It will stand out a bit more once the wings have some of the shine knocked back . Fingers XXXXXXX

Hi Frank , I have protractor maked out on my cutting matt and use that . 45 degree and 90 degree . Thanks Fredrik for the kind comment  :)

Okay after spend most of the day in front of the bench . Lower rib tapes on done and the national markings in place .
The decals are frustrating to work with . They will not side of the backing . I have to lift a corner and remove the backing like a sticker . A few broke , but no biggy , keeping the surface wet really aids in these decals . Once pressed down any movement and the will tare . Again everything got a sealant coat of future .

Weekends first report . Started last night appling the upper rib tapes on the lower wing and finished off the top wing this afternoon . National markings are in place as well . Ready to start the weathering process now but first the wings will be dulled down a bit . They have many coats for future and the surface is now to shiney and the wash will only bead . Up next as well is starting to make the turnbuckles , which i have a idea making this easier more to come on that later .

Thanks everyone for the very kind comments , really means a lot to me  :)

End of weekend report ...

Before I spray a dull coat over everything for the pastel chalks to grab the surface . A wash was applied all over the fuselage . For this I used Flory's grime . Once dried a damp towel was used to wipe away the excess . This wash was ran over the tires on the wheels , but not removed . Now everything was dull coat . Chipping I used Vallejo model air alum and for the dirt and grime I used different shades of pastel chalks . Oil staining I used tamiya smoke thinned down with future and Tamiya chalk ( oil stain ) . Fuselage was then sprayed a semi gloss and the wings dull coat . Engine is mounted and cowl on . Guns are also fixed in place along with the fuel gauge .

I must say progress has been slow making the turnbuckles and with a learning curve with Uschi rigging line . It has me using a few choice words . Ones the Sieben hasn't heard me say it . But I am making progress no less , just not as fast as I wanted it to go .

So far the rigging connections on the cowl decking are set and the right side of the wing is ready as well . On the top under side of the main wing I will not be using wire hoops . Will slide another brass bit on the line and the that end will glued in the hole . Using the Uschi line has a steep learning curve and I'm not sure I really like this stuff . Time will time I guess . I also have this line for 48 scale as well .

You guys are great , thank-you very much for tagging along for the ride  :) :) :)

Fredrik , I won't be threading this back through the brass tubing . Since this line is nice a stretchy I made my eye lets the same way and the double ones one of the tail ends was glued in the tubing and then I just placed one end in and drop of super glue . The other tail of the eyelet fix in place , pull the line , place in hole apply a drop for super glue ...done . Or at least the method to my madness .

Title: Re: Rodens SSW D.III 1/32

Maybe you've tried this, but can you make the Uschi line stiff enough for passing through tubing by applying a coat of thin CA glue and letting it cure while holding a small amount of tension on it?  This will make it stiffer and straight without making the diameter larger.  Do this on the end of the line only.

Title: Re: Rodens SSW D.III 1/32
Post by: Alexis on December 06, 2019, 01:38:40 PM
Use away Fredrik  :)

Ken , yes I did find that when messing around with ways on working with the line , but my results only ended in the end curling up  , maybe more tension ...

Hi Terri,
Stretch and then glue an inch from the end. Allow to dry and then snip off the waste. Keep the line under tension throughout.

Lovely work BTW  :-*

Putting on Lindemanns new album F&M I got down to business and got the top wing mounted . Had to make a few adjustments to the holes for the pins in the top wing and trim back a few pins , but she all fit perfect and the wing is straight ! Okay this is the most frustrating product I used for rigging . Took some damage causing more paint repairs . I had to re do many ...many ...many turnbuckles and line . Walking away multiple times . Landing gear is fixed and rigged as well . I did lose one line . Right rear side while trying to fit the bell cranks which ended up in the trash . Windscreen ended up in the great blue yonder . This almost ended up in the trash ...but away way here is my crappy efforts on a project which was going so well .

Catching up again Terri - and unless you had pointed out the problems with the rigging I would never have guessed that they had ever existed. That looks a truly cracking model - I do hope that you will leave it for a short period and then finish it. After all of the time and effort that you have put into it, it would be a tradegy if the outcome was other than a successful completion.
