Title: My Hangar To Date
Post by: Chris Johnson on April 21, 2012, 02:09:25 AM
The following are the WWI aircraft that I've built to date, since jumping into aviation modelling last June. The first kit I built was the WnW Sopwith Pup RNAS and aside from the rigging eyelets that are stout enough to hang a side of beef from, I was pretty happy with the result.

My second kit was the WnW Albatros D.V and I used Humbrol paint on it, which was the first time I've used enamels in over 30 years.

My third build was Roden's 1/32 Pfalz D.III and I painted it with rattle cans from Walmart, just to experiment with them for ease of use. I discovered in this build that Roden kits are really 'fun'. Tongue firmly planted in cheek here.

Next in line was the WnW Roland D.VIa where I tried my hand at a woodgrain effect and lozenge decals. I really enjoyed this project.

And my most recent build was Roden's 1/32 Dr.I kit where I took a crack at streaked camouflage using oils, and a barber pole paint job, both of which were also fun to execute.

Thanks for looking, and now it's back to struggling with my Roden S.E.5a.

Cheers,

Chris

Hi Chris,

A nice little collection you have growing there, The Roland is a thing of beauty and the Dr1 is also very nice indeed not forgetting the Pup the Pfalz and the Albatros, all splendid examples of our art.

Best Regards

Keith

I've watched every one of these being built, Chris, and have thoroughly enjoyed every moment.  Very fine modeling skills you brought to the genre and you've improved with each build.  Each one is a beauty, but the Dr.I is truly exquisite.
Cheers,
Bud

Now listen carefully, ok ready now here it comes.Don't make me come there to the Great White North and escort you and your builds to the first available contest in June. Seriously Chris your projects are contest quality material.

There's a contest up here in June?  ???  Honestly, I'm not aware of it. You'd still have to drag me to it though!  ;D

Cheers,

Chris

Gregory's just looking for an excuse to get out of the heat and humidity of the Deep South in June.  Might as well humor him and go along.  Your models really are contest ready.  If the WWI subjects are as sparce there as they are here, you'll sweep the class.
Cheers,
Bud

Great hanger of beauties there Chris :)

Bud and co stated that they followed your builds - do you have a link? Especially for the Dr.1?

Cheers

LOL Busted again Bud. But not to escape the heat and the humidity way down in the Deep South. My wife and I will be in Kenora,Ont. in June for family business. I certainly would rather drag Chris along to any contest availabler while in the area rather that deal with what I have to do while in Kenora. But duty is duty no matter how much I dislike it.

Gregory Jouette

PS: One positive note though I will get the chance to visit with the wife's cousin and her fanastic Cigar Bar. I don't drink but I sure do love a really excellent Cuban Cigar.

Quite a stunning collection you have there Chris. I still remember, and it doesn't seem that long ago, when you were sending me emails asking how to do this and how to do that with your Pup build, you were so worried about getting it right, well, not only did you get your first one right but each model after was pure excellence, like others have said, contest winners.

I posted build logs for all of them on Great War Aviation. I would think that they're still there, but I can't say for sure.

I just discovered that IPMS Edmonton is running a show in Edmonton, Alberta on June 2, 2012, at the Alberta Aviation Museum. That's sort of in the area of Kenora  ;D  and sounds like it would be more enjoyable than what you've alluded to above. You still couldn't drag me there though!

Cheers,

Chris

All good work on display here -

I know what you mean about the Roden Pfalz - it nearly never got built.  I could not get the fuselage halves to close up around the engine area - it just did not fit.   I got so frustrated and angry at one point that I got close to literally hurling the model at the wall!  Only words of encouragement from my wife kept me going.
In the end, I ended up cutting (hacking) away a lot of the lower engine formers to get a half reasonable fit.   After this though, the rest of the kit flew together really well.

Hi, Chris,

Belated congratulations on a very fine stable of mounts. Believe it or not, I actually started the WNW SE yesterday, just to say that I really DID start, but really tiny baby steps only. However, from the look of your builds, you don't need any help when it comes to the WNW SE!  ;)

Ah, you're too kind! Refresh my memory here Trackpad. Which of Rowan's markings are you using for your S.E.5a? I'll use the other Canadian set for mine.

Be sure to post some in-progress images!

They do indeed, but I guess I'm too set in my ways with using Tamiya's quick drying and easy clean-up paint. If Humbrol would switch from those tinlets to a bottle, I might be swayed, but I know that's not about to happen. I still use Humbrol for my washes though.

Chris

Thanks Uncle Tony.

As for my turnbuckles, I use 0.5 mm brass tubing and Maxima Chameleon 2lb test monofilament. I picked up this technique from Des' website. The illustration I made below shows two different methods of attaching the turnbuckles to the wing, or fuselage for that matter.

Up until my Dr.I build, I was attaching my turnbuckles as per the illustration on the right side, using a long and short piece of tubing and gluing the tail of the eyelet in the wing. On my Dr.I, I used the technique as illustrated on the left side. Albatros1234 suggested it to me and it offers two advantages.

In the first place, it eliminates the short piece of tubing. Secondly, by connecting to an eyelet, the turnbuckle is free to rotate to line up perfectly with the rigging, as opposed to having to bend the tail of the eyelet to make the turnbuckle line up. Sometimes I had difficulty getting the turnbuckle to line up perfectly as I didn't get the eyelet bent at the correct angle. Albatros1234's method is virtually fool proof.

I can say that as it worked for me!  ;D

Cheers,

Chris

A suggestion Chris and that is to post this in the Hints and Tips section. It's a real keeper IMO. Maybe Des would make it a stickie.

Interesting looking Dr.I, I'd not seen the olive/brown combination before, though I had read about it. A different effect, to be sure. I've got the Encore boxing of this kit in the stash (picked up at a great price), and I think I'll go with olive streaking on that one when the time comes.

I don't know how I missed this til now; my compliments on a truly impressive "stable", very nice work. Also reviewed the tutorial (Des's?) on turnbuckles, think I'll modify my approach slightly as well.

Incorporating turnbuckles without tails works very well for me, and I like the look of the finished product. Eliminating the need to position the turnbuckle together with dispensing with the extra piece of connector tubing makes things move along just that much quicker too.

Cheers,

Chris
