Title: Scratchbuilt Hergt 1918 Eindecker <<Group Build After Build>>
Post by: ermeio on July 31, 2019, 05:32:30 PM
Well,
 like many of us
over the last six months I've been kept running on other tasks, other than modeling.
But making a model in memory of Des has been a priority - it had to be a scratchbuilt model since I had a correspondence with Des about scratchbuilding, expecially in the period he was building the Dufaux.
My plan was to scratchbuild a Morane Saulnier G, since when I was young I had a first attempt to scratchbuild an 1/32 aircraft and it was a MS monoplane - it is still stored somewhere, incomplete ... and since i still have the letter from Des with the photo etched MS monogram. Actually it was my first contact with him - my first experience of his courtesy .
Last week i realized that I was completely mising the deadline, so I've asked for a pair of days of vacation.
The first day  (yesterday) I was busy piling up some documentation, deciding which model was feasible in two days and running across the various models stored at hand.
I was not able to decide completely but the first option is to build a simple Hergt 1918 monoplane.
I have gathered documentation and pieces to scratchbuild it.
It is an elusive monoplane, a sort of Fokker Eindecker contraption, but studying it better one realizes that it is completely made of wood and it has a cantilever wing like the D.VIII.
A realistic reproduction would entail a scratchbuilt wing - I don't know whether I'll have enough time in the next two days.
This is the current state of my workbench is this:

I will start almost form scratch.

The engine is a 7 cyl. gnome and some pieces can be borrowed from a fokker E.I or from a pfalz E.I in the case you want to have it in 48.
I also discovered that Revell Fokker E.III wing can be a good base in the case you want it in 48 scale.
Some plans for a flying model have appeared over the last years and a pretty good 3-view was enclosed in a technical article.

Love it! A deadliner after my own heart! ;)
Also - never having heard of this machine - it makes me appreciate just how important and influential the pre-war Morane Saulnier monoplanes were.
All the best for your concentrated effort this week.

Wow two days to go and you are just starting...That is extreme! Go for it mate! It'll be like watching the last few minutes of an international game of rugby (we usually like those last few minutes...but we didn't last Saturday :'().

Cheers,
Alistair

This is very much where I stand now... the fuselage is at a good point
I have wasted some time making two good sides in plasticard this morning, just to discover that it would have been very difficult to have a fuselage in square using them, since I do not have all of my modeling tools here.
So I reverted to a simpler method, drawing a side view on a rectangle of plasticard and building over it.
I closed it five minutes ago and it seems good.

I will keep posting the updates later today.

Best of luck with this Ermio - but even if you miss the deadline still finish it as it is a) a scratchbuild of which Des would have strongly approved, and b) it is a lesser known type of which Des would also have approved!

Come to that I approve of it on both counts too, but that does not matter!

Best wishes,

Stephen.

This is where I stand today
I had to waste a lot of time since superglue cracked
and this morning I had to complete other tasks for real-life work, so I will not get it to respect the deadline.
i will complete it in the next days
