Having a busy weekend I managed to work in some bench time . All the parts have been cut out and sanded . Still have some work to do on the trail edges on getting them thinner . Cockpit pit still needs to be opened up and same with the cowl . This I will do later once must of the test fitting is over with the main parts . It will give the parts more ridge when sanding .

I really like your start on this kit. I have a Hannover Cl. III from Koster and it looks amazing for a vacu kit. But nevertheless it’s a brave decision to go with a vacu instead of the eduard injection moulded kit of the SSW D III. i am keen on following your progress.

Following this with much interest Terri. Vac form kits scare me so I'm in awe of those who can tame the beasts. The last vac I did was a 1/72 Pfalz D.III and the memory has almost faded thankfully :)

Looking forward to seeing the gem I know you will produce from this kit.

Hi Andreas , I still have another one of these Koster kits . SSW D-4 and it has resin wings so will be less sanding on that one . Still have Eduards first release from 95 , Flashbacks take on the subject and Eduards new tooled in the stash .

So far it seems to be going well so far for me ( knocks on wood ) so I hope not to let anyone down .

Well Dave , I know how you feel . My first try was a huge disater and didn't even get finished . Ended up in the trash it did .
But it wasn't my last and I do enjoy them from time to time . Any questions just ask and i will do my best to answer them .

Wow!! What we now consider "retro modelling" You could always see his "master model for Monogram" style in all his kits. They were the best of the best in 1/48. I still have the DVIII even though it has been surpassed as far as build-ability is concerned but it's just a nice kit. Watching this one!!

Sanding , more sanding and even more sanding the wings and glued up and the first round on sanding is done . Some edges need a bit of touch up then I can prep them for decals . Cowl is ready to go and the rest of the cut outs are done on the fuselage halves . I filled in the hand holds and this will be repositioned . and add some panel lines . Also got the cockpit formers
cut out of 0.10mm plastic card and ready to go .

I have never built a vac kit but I find them interesting.  My impression is that you are essentially scratchbuilding the model but the exterior surfaces are provided for you.  Are you concerned about warping when gluing the thin parts together?  Or are you not using styrene glue?
Title: Re: Koster's SSW D.III 1/48

Good luck with this kit, Terri! Looks like a good progress until now.

But nevertheless it’s a brave decision to go with a vacu instead of the eduard injection moulded kit of the SSW D III.
Same feeling here. If there is a nice kit available (and the new Eduard rendering is really nice) I would always prefer a modern kit, until the stash is much smaller and all  important types with modern kits available are done.
Ok, old kits are fun (e.g. I remember my Sopwith Pup - still no modern kit available), the outcome can be great and unique, but it costs more time.

But if you have a nice time and fun with a old vacu - why not? ;)

Cheers,
Frank

Basically you are correct Ken . Some vac Kits you have to do a bit more of the scratchbuilding than others . No I'm not worried about warping when gluing the thin parts . I don't used tube glue for this . I use Tamiya thin or their quick setting for this . On this kit the plastic is thick enough , however ; other kits will have thin plastic and in that case a wing spar will be added . If I have to do this brass tubing works the best and this I super glue in place .

Made some more progress and the graining is done and made a start on the details . Few more bits to make and the pit will be done . Engine is rady as well for further detailing .

Title: Re: Koster's SSW D.III 1/48
Post by: Alexis on June 30, 2019, 03:06:18 PM
I used Eduards resin engine , the kit engine isn't very good a all . I still need to add the PE push rods and that will be it for the detailing . Not much will be seen once the engine mount and spinner/prop is in place .

Is that the Eduard one on your picture?
I know only this one I used: https://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=9722

I think a thin wire is better for the pushrods (the PE are flat). I used remainings of push rods of the Small Stuff rotaries.

Hi Frank , Yes it is Eduards engine . When Eduard first released kit 8001 it had a white metal engine . On the second production run Eduard used resin for the engine . It's also the same resin engine in the Flashbacks kit .
I do have Eduards new tooled SSW in the stash with the aftermarket resin engine by them as well . Wire or plastic rod is better for the push rods , but I don't want this to be on the bench for months and months with adding detail . Too many kits to build .

Thanks Drew for stopping by  :)

Extraordinary work thus far, T!  I love these Koster vacs.  With a little work, they can be built up into models that hold their own against newer releases.  And you're just the modeler to do it.  Can't wait to see how it turns out.

Thank-you my friends for the best wishes . It was the worst I did to my back . For two days I couldn't stand and ended up having to use two putters for standing and walking ...nein gut !

Lance , no it wasn't from mountain biking , at work while wrapping a skid  :'( Getting to old for some of that stuff now . Mind thinks it can do it , but the body sure in the hell don't !

This weekend I got some time in front of the bench and finished off the cockpit details and got the fuselage closed up . I also forgot to snap a photo of said parts before halves got glued up . However that is the least of my troubles with this build . As you can see there is a fair bit of filling and sanding in the with the lower wing in place ( not yet glue ) The fit of this part is horrible . I have Koster D.VI and that resin wing fits a hell a lot better then the vac parts .

Need to think on how to fix this so more to follow ....

The fit of the Vac wings certainly looks challenging to say the least! Perhaps you can use pieces of sheet styrene to give the putty something to make it more solid. I really don't know....even Roden kits aren't this challenging  ::)

Ken , Rick ; yup she will be eating up a fare bit putty . The plan is to fill with as much plastic scraps first and finish off with putty . There isn't a hell of a lot of plastic there and with the sanding involved more plastic will get removed . I have a plan now which involves removing the detail on the chin and replaced that detail later as well as the two vent scoops which are in the wrong position away . Fill what I can with card and ear plugs for my cat . He will be hearing some very colourful language while the sanding is going on  :o

Rick that is my goal and after today I'm one step closer to primer . Today I spent time working on sanding down the filler and getting the areas smoothed out . Tail planes and rudder and tail skid are fixed in place and puttied in as well . Now she is starting to look like an airplane . I also notice my mistake on the hand holds , still wrong but I will leave as is . Now I need to start replacing detail and re-scrip a few panel lines .

Manni and Ken . I can't take credit of the prop blades . Those are decals for the kit actually . The prop and spinner are from a old Eduard build . My cat Blau jump up on the bench and knocked over a bottle of pro-weld . Well I can say that it melted what I had work on , So I kept what was useable and tossed the rest . Prop blades have been re-worked cord and span wise .

Rick , wasn't to sure on how to go by the fuselage . At first I was going to do wood graining , but this won't been seen any way . So I used Tamiya linoleum deck brown with a few drops of Tamiya clear orange for the shellac .

Hi Antonio , It's part of Tamiya's new line which came out a few years ago XF-79 is it's paint number in their acrylic line of paints . I have the lacquer paint by them as well but it is lighter in shade and even with the clear orange mixed in . It would have not even been close . The shellac is more of a dark brown but not overly dark . Once applied to the fuaelage it would have covered up any grain effect so in this case no wood tones .

Terri,
Great choice for the scheme and the model is looking mighty fine indeed. I've always planned to do a second D.III in wood finish and this would be perfect. I have a Roden Kit in the Stash ............. maybe closer to building then I think as I follow your excellent work here! 8)
Cheers,
Lance

Lance ,

It is a cool scheme isn't it ! But I think the Roden kit would be easier then this one . I will get to my some day , maybe this winter it will make it to the bench . When you start your second one I will be following along .

Inspiring work, it can't be the easiest of kits. The wood look is great on these SSWs.
Have always been fascinated by that series, though I only have an old Toko SSW D.IV in 1:72 to show for it.
Hoping to see a D.IV (or even a D.VI - amazing looking machine) in 1:32 one day.
Looking forward to seeing the end result - cat permitting!  :)

Thanks Gary and Mark for dropping by and having a peak  8)

Mark , I have built the Toko kit but as the D.III . Wonderful little kit actual . Yes a 32 scale or even 48 scale D.IV would be great . Or even a resin set to replace the wings and struts . I wouldn't mind picking up another Roden kit in 32 scale and scratching the wings and struts myself .

I finished off the detail paint and started clear coating for decals when disatier happened . My clear coat had alum flakes in it . Well this didn't go well while running to the kitchen to wash off the Tamiya clear coat and in the process of doing said action ...I drop it on the floor and spilting the fuselage along the top and bottom spine and cracking the join on the back end of the lower wing join . I have re-glued the seems and re-puttied once again . Should be back on track in no time .

There is always that one moment when I can recover quickly from a boob -boob . Fuselage has been re-sprayed with the same mix as before and this time around for the Black I used Tamiya Lacquer paint . ( Man this are lovely paints to use ! )
Decals are on now and thank god for spares . The one set I first started using broke part so bad that I ended up just tossing them and got out the spare sheet and these worked wonderful . So it looks like I'm back on track and can start doing the lozenge tomorrow . I found out that I still have some of Doug Barumans 5 colour lozenge upper and lower . If my memory is correct I think I used these on my last SSW D.III build . Coloured tapes will be used this time around , blue upper , pink lower .

Thanks Mark and Rick  :) ;) 8)

Here is my progress with the lower wing lozenge so far . The inter struts will get covered with some left over Microsculpt 5 colour . The struts weren't covered in fabric . The pattern was painted to match the lozenge . The pattern was painted just a little larger .

Lozenge work looking great!
The SSWs have their own special challenge don't they, with the diagonal application etc (I have a 1:32 D.III waiting to do, and this is the part I most think about - I bought some Aviattic lozenge for the job)
Good luck with the struts

can't remember, where I find it (may be Datafile?), but I left the sockets of the struts in wooden color.

Mark , Ken , Rick , Frank , Andreas thanks for the continuing encouraging comments . They mean a lot  :)

Mark , This is has been a bit more challenging than my last SSW build . The last mishap was my own doing  ;) . What will be annoying is doing the control surfaces . The lozenge bolts are wide enough .  :-\

Frank , you are correct the sockets are left in their natural wood state , but varnished .

Okay , it has been a good week for being in front of the bench . Engine is finished and installed . Motor mount is from a trashed Eduard build . One that is supplied in the kit didn't fit after mods were done to the cowl . Eduards was perfect ! All struts are ready to go and under carriage as well and yes all mounting holes and rigging holes for the turnbuckles are done . Wish I would have remembered to do this earlier in the build , would have been a hell off a lot easier ! Also added a wash and every thing can get a coat of dull coat for the second round of weathering and then it's off to gluing it all together  :)

Not much progress this weekend , was on the lazy side with the rain and overcast skies , but I did get some stuff finished in between dropping everything . I had to make a few of the rigging lines a few times and also corrected the wheels . The axle wasn't long enough . It's all fixed now and looks much better .

Well ... she is finally finished . Even the struts and rigging fought me as well to . But I wasn't going to let it beat me . In the end It isn't my best , that's for sure , but not my worst either . It was still an enjoyable build for the most part . There are a few errors in the kit . Tail planes are to big , but I left it as is . Lower wing is off center . This was already present before the wings were cut out . So I worked with what I had . Seat is over scale and I should have replaced this item .

Here she is .....
