I have decided it is time to do another Dual Build. This time 2 WNW kits will be used.
1. Pfalz DIIIa
(https://i.postimg.cc/QxqvBC26/60339791-2776310735729314-1593949104705110016-n.jpg)
2. Albatros DV

I will post more about schemes and such later.

Looking forward to two more beauties from you. A treat for all I am sure.
-
Rick,
You are certainly redefining "retirement' and "putting your feet up"! No moss growing on that RAG III I'll tell ya, a genuine modelling machine! ;) ;) It's great to see a fellow enthusiast so obviously enjoying his step into the next phase of life and the pursuit of contentment, go hard!!
Cheers,
Lance
-
Lance took the thoughts right outa my skull, Amigo! Retirement suits you!
Cheers,
Bud
-
Sweet ! A double hitter :)
Terri
-
Will be following this, especially your Pfalz build.
-
wow another great thread by tireless Rick!
:-D
-
Thanks for all of the encouragement Guys and Gal! Lance I truly am enjoying My New Retired Life 8) This is the color scheme I will be using for the Pfalz. Pheon Decals, just need to decide on red or black ::)

Just received these decals today from Larry Trout. Thanks Larry! So I now have all in place for the builds.

I'm just rigging mine and I notice that there are 2 drag wires each side, both going to the lower wing. Unusual.

I am on this track...!!

I am looking forward to seeing yours rigged. By the way, thanks for the inspiration to do this one!
RAGIII
I am on this track...!!
I will be honored to have you following along! Just wondering if you still have any info on the lower nose panels? Pattern and how many?
RAGIII

Red!
-
Red!
I have to admit that I REALLY like the red option! That being said I am afraid black is the more logical option given that Red was the province of MvR and Jasta 11 at the time this aircraft was around in JG1. :(
RAGIII
-
Just catching up Rick: great to see that you are going for another double build: I could not do that as I would lose track of what needed doing next on each model! As for retirement - I have been retired for nearly a decade and I still cannot seem to find the time to speed up to your rate of construction - life just seems to get in the way! So more power to your elbows on the modelling table as you continue to show us how....!!
Stephen.
-
I missed the start of this one. On board now!!
Steve
-
Rick - I will be following your builds closely, and looking forward to it. :)
Cheers,

Thanks Stephen. My last two Dual builds ended up as singles but I think I can nail these two down.

Thanks Steve. So far I have missed the start also ::) Far enough along on the Fokker now so I actually did a TINY bit of work on the Albatros today!

RAGIII
Well it is not all red and plenty of the others in the group had red to some degree on them . Go for the red.

Thanks Amigo. I May take your advice! I have made a Meager beginning on the builds. I have filled and sanded the Mold release circles in the Albatros Fuselage halves and also the incorrect, for an early version DV under fuselage nose panels. I have penciled in the approximate location of the new for to aft panel lines I can see in drawings. Any further info is appreciated! I also did some BASIC construction on the engines for both the Alby and the Pfalz.

I have received some info from Bo on the underside fuselage panels. Seven planks needed so I have a little better idea of how to locate them. He also noted that the Oil Pump access hatch needs to be moved back behind rib station #4. Now I just need to figure out which hatch that one is :-\

Nice progress Rick,
You’re a machine! Do you display your finished models? You must be running out of space...

Thanks Guy. I do display them and yes running out of space. All of My 1/48th Models are on the chopping block :o So have room for about 15 more 1/32nd kits 8)
RAGIII
I missed the panel conversation but it's a nice start to the project
Steve
Thanks Steve. The panel discussion can be found by following this link: https://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=10298.0
One thing to note is that the aforementioned Hatch is actually in the correct place for a DV with the 160 HP Mercedes DIII so no need to change it on this one ;D
RAGIII
-
That is a good start Rick - more than I seem to have been able to accomplish recently. One advantage of scratch building is that I do not have to worry about ejector pin marks!
Stephen.

Thanks Stephen. You are correct about those Ejector Pins. I have also never heard you say that a particular Aircraft was unbuildable because of Fatal Flaws in the kit ;D
RAGIII

Two interesting birds here, Rick. Looking forward to seeing your progress. (You're going to have them done in about two weeks, right?)

So making some progress on both the Albatros and Pfalz. So far the engines. For the Albatros DV the 160 HP Mercedes DIII and for the Pfalz 185 HP Mercedes DIIIa. Engines in various stages of completion although the DIII for the Albatros is about done.

That D III really looks as though all it needs is some petrol and oil, and an electric charge to set of the plugs! The wiring is very good - and I suspect reather smaller than it looks in the photos.
Stephen.

Thanks Stephen. Yes the engine is quite a bit smaller than the photo. Doesn't look nearly as rough in 1/1 scale :o

I have begun to paint the interior. Tamiya Buff as a base then raw sienna, burnt sienna, and burnt umber oils applied:

I have progressed on the Pfalz interior while I was waiting for the oils to dry on the Albatros. Most of the interior is complete. I just lack a couple of items and the inevitable touch up. Control wires are stretched sprue with white glue turnbuckles. I am approaching the point where I will make My decision on red vs black for the fuselage color :-\

Thanks Andrew greatly appreciated. I like the floor results also 8)
RAGIII

Ryan
Funny thing Ryan, I did Nothing to weather the belts yet! I was looking for something that would adhere to PE so pre painted the belts with Floquil Italian Sand Brown. Then overpainted with Valejo Ivory white. I think the natural shadows and editing are giving a bit of contrast to the photos. I will weather the belts soon and I hope the results look as good ::)
RAGIII
-
Then I have been fooled twice, I thought they were HGW units.
Ryan
-
Then I have been fooled twice, I thought they were HGW units.
Ryan
Well I will certainly take that as a "compliment" ;D What I did with the belts prior to painting was anneal the Hell out of them then crumple them up. Made them very pliable and look better than normal...for me at least 8)
RAGIII
-
Rick, you made a good progress already in nice quality!
I do not know the WNW Pfalz, but my red Eduard Pfalz and the Triplane conversion were big fun!
So a red one would be nice ;)
Cheers,
Frank

So the belts are just PE from the kit?
-

Yes, the kit PE. The Floquil as a base coat really grabbed and held. It allowed the Valejo to adhere even where grabbed with tweezers, prodded, pulled etc.!

I agree with the others - the whole interior looks really good. BTW I do like the idea of stretched sprue and white glue for the control wires....

The wood adds a great deal to the Albie and the Pfalz looks great with the color chosen and the stripe. Looking forward to your outstanding progress.

Thanks Steve. I greatly appreciate your comments on the wood. As always I focused more on the effect of light and dark using raw sienna, burnt sienna, and burnt umber rather than a specific grain pattern.

Nicely done Rick. You've taken on a real challenge by striving for contrast between panels on the Albie; I've done it a few times and it's a stressful little period of the Build! Are you masking between panels when adding the wood grain? I mask with a thin and "de-tacked" bit of Tamiya tape and dread that moment when the tape has to be lifted. To date it's worked very well, however .........?!
The Pfalz is a beauty as well, this is going to be quite the pair when completed.
Cheers,
Lance

Thanks Lance. In answer to your question No Masking. Just painted some panels in a lighter shade of beige then did it all by hand. I try to do one panel at a time and start at the edge working towards the rear of the fuselage. Blend in at the front of each panel so there is not a carryover from one panel to the next. Applying the oils took Maybe an hour and a half ( Four Days to Dry) 8)

I have progressed to applying markings and painting the wings. The Pfalz Silbergrau is XTra color Weiss Aluminum and Steingrau over pre shading of black. The Pheon oversized crosses have been applied. The Albatros has the markings applied to the fuselage and the basic camo colors applied to the tail. I have also used Aviattic blue linen decals for the underside color. I decided to go against the grain with the checker board marking on the left side and mirrored it vs the instructions. Not sure now how I feel about it :-\

The Pfalz is now a biplane. Some weathering with oils has been applied to the upper surface of the lower wing. Next up is attaching the radiator then weathering the upper wing. The Albatros has had similar treatment to the lower wing and also the filler caps and hardware have been painted grey/green.

The major rigging is installed on both the Pfalz and Albatros. I must admit that I had a Mishap with the Albatros( My own Making) as one of the V struts popped loose at the upper front location. Instead of just placing a drop of superglue to hold it in place I hit it repeatedly with Tamiya extra thin. This essentially Melted the thing and I ended up doing a strut replacement >:( Still need to touch up the leading edge by the strut on the upper wing. Next up will be painting the wires and adding My usual Smoke and Mirrors Turnbuckles 8)

I'm curious as to the turnbuckles you mention , you saw me use decal strips for manifold wrapping , turnbuckles were wrapped in doped linen as well sometimes , is this what you are alluding to?

Two very fine looking models, Rick. A wooden Alby and the Black Baron! The weathering on the Pfalz's wings looks great, and the wood on the Alby, of course. I'm interested in what you mean by 'smoke and mirrors' turnbuckles.
BTW - were the machine guns from the kits? or AM?

Thanks for dropping by and the comments! As for the Smoke and Mirrors Turnbuckles I just use a little white glue and paint. They will not win a contest but when I get it right they look enough like Buckles to get by with ::) You can see them on My last albatross, look at the base of the left V strut:

Outstanding work Rick. Clean, crisp, and both spectacular schemes. Retirement is looking good on you, and on your shelves as well!!

Great result on both Rick! I have not yet built a german biplane with violett or mauve, but this will come. So your model is a bit looking into the future ;) I find only the lower side a bit on the blue side (personal opinion).
I have now for all that very special kind of colors the Droolung bulldog paints in my stash, but not yet used. Let's see.
Cheers,
Frank

What a lovely pair Rick. Superb models with an excellent thread: a real modelling treat.
Do you intend to build another pair or are you going to concentrate on one next time?
Stephen.
