Ok here is the beginning of my first ever and maybe last ever Scratch-Built aircraft ..... I have no idea if I will finish this in the allotted time .... but I am going to give it a go!
I started this about 3 weeks ago ......
I started with bass-wood and a homemade jig made from a piece of molding with a slot in the back of it ......
After soaking the wood in water I clamped it down to get the airfoil section and left it for a few days to dry .....
I decided on Bass-Wood because it is strong and Light..... Actually the bass-wood is covered in a two part resin and sanded smooth.... making a very strong and very light wing....

After cutting the top wing out of the airfoil shaped wood and sanding to shape....

the ailerons are made out of plastic sheet ..... so I can add wash-out after sanding.....

These are cut out of sign makers tape....... then burnished down and primer is sprayed over them and then more sanding....

Actually my friend Tom Walsh has been trying to get me to scratch build something for years....(That is all he usually does) he has shown me many of his technics and I have full use of his Very large Vacuform machine....Now that I have got started ..... I think really enjoy the planning and making it all come together (holding my breath) we shall see???

The fuselage will be built in the traditional manner the upper decks & the cowl will be vacuformed, I may build the complete internal structure with the struts and undercarrige attached first though ???? We shall see???

I was plannng on using Des's styrene bending technique for the wings of my Lloyd C.V, but I'm open to new ideas. ;) I plan to make a balsa master and vacuform the fuselage as you are doing.

Hello Bob,
Yes the wing shape was cut out after being traced on to the airfoil shape Bass-wood ..... Get a piece of bass wood as close to the thickness of airfoil you need ..... after getting the wing to the shape and thickness you want....... just mix up the two part epoxy resin (with a little micro-balloons, they will make sanding easier and thicken up the resin a bit) brush it on one side and let it dry..... try to get it as even as possible, but no worries you will be sanding it smooth anyway... drying time is about 1 hour so no hurry ... but here in Arizona is more like 20 minutes......
Don't worry too much about your trailing edge if you go to far trying to get a knife edge ..... I did on my top wing..... so I just laid the wing on a piece of wax paper and taped it down along the leading edge .... then mixed up a little resin and brushed it on...... once dry, remove the wing from the wax paper and sand it down.... Very hard and very strong and best of all light as a feather............
I actually used a variable speed electric sander with 320 to sand the initial wing and resin down.... then went to wet and dry 320 - 400, and later after the ribs are added the primer is sanded down maybe 600....

Here is where I am today ......... right after taking this photo I screwed up the primer and had to strip the whole center section and re-tape..... just shot a light coat of primer again...... Might just strip it again and start over if I don't like the results...

I would go with a little thicker piece of bass-wood and make a gauge out of plastic for the upper and the lower profile..... you could also make a sanding block in the proper profile shape to glue sandpaper on with Elmer's paper glue (works like a charm) .... again upper and lower profile... but the lower profile is the harder to manage because of the curve ..........

Here is the latest...... after sanding the primer between the ribs I started adding the false ribs with tape..... the reason for sanding between the ribs and only in the direction of the airflow will be apparent once I spray a final coat of primer ...

Just sanding in preparation for adding the false ribs before the final coat of primer..... then I will drill out holes and set the brass tubing that will act as the spars, and add a few details...... Once I get these wings completed to my satisfaction, I think the rest of the build will go much faster ..... I hope???

Hi, Ken,
I've been lurking and working over the last few weeks. Great work so far, and I am sure there will be more to follow. Are you using various grades of sandpaper on the wing, or do you stick with one grade throughout? Often wondered how you'd sand the wood but more or less protect the softer tape! ???

Thanks for the encouragement! I hate sanding at this point...... (but really not that bad)
I am using 400 grit sandpaper once the tape ribs are down ..... I only had one mishap with the tape my own fault and I wasn't really happy with that section of the wing anyway..... real easy to go back and fix.... for the most part this tape is bullet proof once it is set into the primer.... I will take a few photos shortly to show the little progress I have made in the last week (Holiday got in the way)...... I covered the ribs fairly heavy with primer shot at an angle ....... then come back and sand between the ribs lightly until I expose each tape rib..... (Don't use white primer if your tape is white LOL) Not looking for the starving cow effect just a slight dip...... I added the false ribs after this was done.....

Your first photo has the sanded wing looking like a piece of fine furniture. You can definitely see the many coats of filler and paint applied. Excellent work, and an excellent result: well done! :D

Yes its Balsa.... going to try to pull a three sided vacuform over the lower fuselage.... not sure I will be able to do this so I am making the master in two pieces in case I have to resort to the two halves with two separate upper pieces .... plus the cowling ....

Yup makes perfect sense, just have to make sure you have a wide base so the plastic doesnt wrap around the master.

I'm really enjoying this build log, Ken. I'm learning a lot from watching what you're doing, as I've never tried vacforming, let alone scratching the masters.

The Latest .... not much progress as the Holidays got in the way .......
The Fuselage male mold is almost complete .... the upper decking is another story.... I'm not happy with the first attempt, which I was going to do in three pieces.... the second attempt is in skeletal plastic card form soon to be covered with balsa and Elmer's wonder putty....(this stuff is the BOMB by the way! Add a little water to the container and it can be smoothed on like mayonnaise) I know this is over-kill as everything you see will be on the inside of the fuselage shells, but better safe than sorry ......
I will keep the failed attempt a the rear decking and pull a few vacu-formed pieces from it just in case I can use them???

The latest progress.... Fuselage and upper decking almost finished .... Cross section & outline former ready for balsa wood fill in ..... then more sanding to shape ...... I keep a set of 1/32nd scale drawings pinned to the wall for inspiration!
And last my desk and the mess I have made of it............. Will need to clean everything up after the wood-working part of this project is complete....

I think the vac draw will work.... but if not??? The fuselage is actually two pieces as is the cowling ..... split down the middle with piece of paper and paper cement....

The latest ..... getting the cowling to shape and how the whole thing will fit together once the parts are vacuformed.... The fuselage and the cowling are actually two pieces with a piece of paper rubber cemented in between so they can be separated later...

Here is the completed fuselage master which I call the Flying Trout..... a little airbrushing and a few fins .... could easily pass as a trout...... LOL

You're right, Ken! It does look like a trout! After you've finished with the master, you should paint it, add fins and a tail and mount it.

I think the .030 will be just fine .... well at least that is what Tom tells me with his machine ..... heats the plastic very slowly so we should get a very even pull..... Keeping fingers crossed ..... also will be adding almost full internal structure....

The .30 stock does indeed work just fine my old friend. On my old home made vac rig I started using the .30 stock mainly out of impatients with waiting for the .40 to get hot enough to drawdown properly. You'll end up with a very thin shell of a piece but with careful handling works great. I'm looking forward to seeing the results and especially the near full internal structure.

Thanks Everyone for the kind words........ The sheet styrene came in a few days ago and my buddy brought over his vacuform machine today, and this is the result of my very first experiments with vacu-forming.... I am pretty pleased with the results ..... but I may pull a few spares just in case????

I vacuformed over the masters both ways and will try a few more with whole lower fuselage and or two halves ...... not sure which I like best yet.... will wait until I get them cleaned up .....

Thanks Bob, Mari, & Dal for the kind words..... This is what I have accomplished since returning from my hunt...... the bottom of the jig was made from one of the extra vacuformed fuselages and covered with paper so the frame work would not be glued to it.... so far so good ...........

Excellent Ken! I'm looking forward to the rest of the interior. You will enjoy it, I'm sure. I found scratching the Lloyd cockpit to be very enjoyable and one of the easier parts of the build. It gives a real sense of progress and accomplishment relatively quickly! ;D Not nearly as tedious as applying rib tapes or battans! ;) Great work!

Getting the rest of the frame work just right will be the tricky part because of the engine bearers...... but once that is done I can incorporate the lower wing mounting points into the frame-work ..... they will be hidden under the floor ... The first two panels of the lower fuselage will be cut out and added later.... I am also going to try to build the landing gear into this frame-work so once finished all can be slid into the fuselage shell ....... we shall see this is my first attempt at scratch building ....... keeping fingers crossed x .... I can't wait to start adding details to the interior though.....

PS Bob your Lloyd is a real beauty and I am learning a lot from following your build ..... have not had time to really comment on others work between job, hunting, & this AEG............ hopefully things will slow down a little after Easter .....

I like your well thought-out approach Ken. Although I am trying to keep a few steps ahead in my mind on the Lloyd, I feel like I'm sometimes just making it up as I go. It's my first scratch build too, so I guess we're learning from each other! ;) I'm also relying heavily on Des's Voisin build log for scratch building methodology, and of course Harry Woodman's book has much to offer. I'm also beginning to see how helpful homemade jigs will be in getting everything to line up correctly on a scratchbuilt model, and those take some forethought and planning as well. It's definately a wonderful learning experience regarding modeling skills and techniques, but the amount of time everything takes in a scratchbuild is a drawback for me. Nonetheless, in the final analysis it is very reqwarding and satisfying, and has improved my modeling skills. ;D
Looks like it will be a jog to the finish for both of us. ;) I'm really looking forward to seeing your AEG in all her glorious final form!

ken, she gets more impressive each time i check in. i like how you did the vac shel as bottom and side together. makes sense to do it this way and drop in the framing. cant wait to see just how the landing gear and lower wing will attach as per you description. keep up the great work.

The framework is almost done with the motor-mounts attached..... WNW Mercedes fits nicely in its cradle.... and the whole interior will slide into the fuselage shell..... hopefully if everything works this framework will also have the landing gear attached to it.... and the two lower panels which have been cut out will be added later.....

Experimentation has been my approach with the Lloyd (as well as winging it with the engineering as well!), and your vac-forming has gone well so far, so why not give it a try? :D

Here is the latest .... not as much done as I would like ..... working too many hours.... I'm thinking I may have to ask Des to move this build over to scratch built as I doubt I will ever finish it in time.... But I shall finish it before I even think about starting anything else!
I added brass tubing to the lower fuselage to take steel pins which will be mounted into the lower wings with the correct dihedral ..... everything is just taped together for these photos.... fit needs a little tweaking here and there, but surprisingly not bad.... I'm actually pretty happy so far with how everything is coming together.

i guess you are pretty happy . its coming along great. i hate deadlines. thats why i never do the group builds. i dont like to feel obligated. it takes the fun out for me and makes me not want to work on said project. i think its gonna look great. even if it take 6 months. doesnt matter what matters is you have fun and you are happy with the result.cheers....scott

This is really coming along nicely. I noticed that the engine sits in its compartment evenly and centered. Your work is thorough and well thought out.
I know what you mean about deadlines. Just keep working at your pace, you are making progress. I like the group builds as it provides a focus and feedback. If I get the project done by the deadline all the better. This has been enjoyable to follow, so if it is here or scratchbuilt I will continue to check in from time to time and see how it is coming along.

Outstanding work so far Ken, your scratch building skills are second to none. The fuselage frame is excellent and is so neat and precise, amd the engine sits in the engine bay beautifully, all due to your perfect engineering of the model. It's always a nice feeling when the wings slip into place and are self supporting, I found that making the wing mountings to be a very crucial part of my scratch builds. I love your vac form work, you have this process down pat and produce wonderful parts, keep up the good work Ken and I look forward to the next step in your build.

Just let me know if you want me to move your build to the scratch build board, GB's can be a little demanding on your time and also adds pressure to the build.

Getting the brass tubes just right inside the fuselage was tricky ..... the steel wire which will be bent to the correct dihedral will be set into the lower wings (at least this is the plan now) .......... keeping fingers crossed ....... trying to figure out what type of socket I will use for the undercarriage and the center section struts ..... The undercarriage will be pretty easy as the wooden floor will cover any trace of the brass tube ....
