Title: Scratchbuild 1/32 Pfalz A.I
Post by: Kalt on February 13, 2019, 06:37:04 AM
Hello everyone,

I think the best way to remember Des is with a 1/32 Scrachtbuilt model. I decided to build an aircraft that was on my "Top 10" list for a long time: The Pfalz A.I Parasol, the license-built version of the Morane Saulnier Type L.

(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7926/33200340648_2b8819453a_o.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/SzNqAm)Pfalz40 (https://flic.kr/p/SzNqAm) by clkal (https://www.flickr.com/photos/33655370@N06/), en Flickr

I have been collecting information and photos for a while without much success. So, I will be very grateful if somebody can share photos or can direct me to a book with good photos. I am interested in detail photos, particularly showing the interior of Pfalz built machines.

These are the books I have or have access to:

- Windsock Datafile 16 Morane Saulnier Type L, JM Bruce, Albatros Productions.
- Windsock Datafile 59 Pfalz E.I/E.VI, PM Grosz, Albatros Productions.
- Pfalz Scout Aces of WWI, Greg VanWyngarden, Osprey Publishing.
- Pfalz Aircraft of WWI, Jack Herries, Flying Machine Press.
- French Aircraft of WWI, JJ Davila/AM Soltan, Flying Machine Press.
- Victoria Cross. WWI airmen and their Aircraft, Alex Revell, Flying Machine Press.

The starting point.....

Thanks Steve and Marc. I will do my best!

I spent last days working with scale drawings. I am using the Morane Saulnier Type  L drawings from the Windsock Datafile as a basis but I had to redraw them using Corel Draw to include some particular characteristics of the Pfalz A.I.

Meanwhile, I started to work in the wing. I used Harry Woodman's method but with a variation, instead of a balsa core I used a more stable material: 2mm plasticard.
The wing profile was achieved with the help of a heat gun and a PVC tube. The trailing edge was sanded to get the correct thickness and the leading edge was rounded. The sanding was the most tedious part of the procedure with a lot of plasticard dust flying everywhere....

Here is a photo of the almost completed wing's core (I still have to make the cut outs in the middle of the wing):

If everything goes Ok I am planning to post a new update in the following days

Thanks Rick and Ryan.
This weekend I found some free time and I managed to advance with the wing.  I printed the rib pattern on a 0.25mm plasticard sheet and then "embossed" each rib with the help of a fine ballpoint pen. Then, I glued it to both sides of the wing core with the "positive" embossing on the upper side of the wing and "negative" on the lower.  I did this to depict the characteristic "sagging of the lower surface of the real wing.

Wonderful job on the wings! I think one of the best I‘ve seen to date. Can you give us some more details? Did you use double sided tape to glue the plastic onto the core or what kind of glue did you use? And how did you get the plans printed onto the plastic?
Thanks!

I am trying to catch up on this section and my eye immediately caught this. That is a lovely choice of aircraft ansd a wonderful wing. Like Andreas I would like to know more about how you attached the skins to the wing core. I made my wing sections by moulding and added strips for ribs as I am not keen on Woodman's idea of using a wood core.

Looking forward to seeing more.

Title: Re: Scratchbuild 1/32 Pfalz A.I
Post by: Kalt on February 27, 2019, 11:48:56 PM
Thanks guys, I am glad you like the wing but is not finished yet.

@Andreas: I used tolueno (or toluol) mixed with small clear bits (from canopies trees) applied with a flat brush (2 cm wide)  to glue the skin to the wing. You have to be very careful because toluol is a very strong glue. You can "melt" the 0.25mm skin very easily. You have to apply just a thin layer to the skin and a thicker one over the core.
I used toluol mainly because its drying time is slower than regular modeler cements like Tamiya, Gunze or Humbrol giving you enough time to "conform" the skin to the wing core.

About the printing on plasticard, It was quite easy. I cut a 0.25mm plasticard sheet to A4 size and printed the drawings I made with Corel Draw with my old and reliable Epson printer. It uses an ink called Dura Brite designed for Photo paper. This paper has a surface very similar to plasticard. You have to let it dry overnight.

@Stephen: I do not like the wood core too. In previous builds, I had many problems using wood for the core: warping....skin lifting ..."bubbles" between the skin and the core...etc...
Because of that, I used plastic instead of wood.
I think Woodman's technique is faster than casting sections of the wing and with a bit of practice, you can get better results.

A small update, still working on the wing. ....
I used a 0.18mm black nylon thread to simulate the wood rods that Morane Saulnier and Pfalz used to attach the fabric cover to the wing ribs. It was a time-consuming task but I am satisfied with the results.

Here is a photo of the almost finished wing compared to  Eduard's Type L  1/48 kit wing. It's a big wing and I am a bit worried about the weight.

And here is a detail photo of the wood rods, this time on a Morane Saulnier Type G

After fixing some details here and there and with a couple of layers of Gunze Surfacer applied, I can say that the wing is finished.

@Steve: I decided to start the build with the wing for that reason. If the results weren't as I expected I would not have wasted much time. The build should be easier from now (famous last words.... :D)

Yes, I am planning to use brass struts and tubes of different sizes not only to support the wing but also for the landing gear and rigging posts.

The "Strutz" set is particularly useful for landing gear and wing struts, because of its streamlined profile. I do not if it is still available I bought several sets from Aeroclub (UK) years ago.

Fantastic work. The openings for fuselage details look great. Your cowling looks perfect and the whole fuselage looks awesome taped together!

Thanks Guys ;D!

@p9o1r1sche: The round fittings were made with an RP Tools' Punch&Die and the oval ones were etched parts form the "Controlhorns & turnbuckles" set (48-087) from Part:

Following with the cockpit details, I finished the oil and fuel tanks. My idea was to use copper from Alclad to paint both tanks but (sadly) I found that they were painted with a satin enamel paint on Pfalz built parasols... :(

For the riveting, I used HGW positive rivets.  I am not totally satisfied with them. I think they are too subtle for a 1/32 WWI model.

The tanks look absolutely fantastic to My eye! Personally I would rather have a little too subtle rivets than way overscale. JMHO,

Me too, I hope the rivets will survive a coat or two of paint

I think you will be fine with paint not hiding those wonderful details Kalt .  :)

A very light coat of paint and that great detail will remain!!

Thanks, Kalt.
A light coat of paint and a pin wash should make the rivets visible.

Just a short update here.

I am still adding parts to the interior. This time I will focus on the seats.
Like the rest of the interior parts, I had to scratchbuilt them.  I used the photo of the uncovered fuselage in the Windsock Datafile as reference. The back seat was made with a 0.20mm plastic card and the base with 0.35mm.
I was finishing the first seat when I realized that Pfalz built machines had a different type of seat.....   So,  I had to start all over again... back to Corel and to the plastic card ::)

Here is a photo of both types of seats. Pfalz to the left and Morane Saulnier to the right of the photo.

I had the seat ready. The problem was that I need two seats and despite my best efforts, I couldn't make two identical ones so I made a couple of resin copies of the original seat. Here are the results:

Well...despite my best efforts I couldn't finish my build before the deadline. I tried to rush it the last month just to ruin most of the work done on the fuselage. I had to start again almost from zero..... >:(

I want to continue posting photos of the build progress but I don't know if I should continue here or should ask the administrator to move it to a different section of the forum.

I'm sure you'll persist with this amazing model. Deadlines are just things and your work is better than a deadline. Please carry on and keep posting. I, at least and I'm sure I speak for all, look forward to a remarkable result!

You are not the only one who has missed the seadline: I am sure that the administrators will allow those of us who have to continue our builds in relevant sections of this site. What you have done so far is just toooo good not to let us see it completed.
