Hello Group Builders,
I will dive in with this build, I know some think the DH.9 is a yawner, but I like the looks of it. As far as Des, unfortunately I never got to interact with him before his passing. His excellent work on this website helped push me over the edge into this age of modeling.
Ryan

I love the DH.9 Ryan...
Dive away!

Guy
I agree. Looking forward to it, Ryan.
Cheers,
Bud
-
I don’t like the DH 4, but I also love the DH 9. I am keen on watching your treatment of this kit.
Best wishes
Andreas
-
Thanks gentlemen, I look forward to my first allied biplane.
Ryan
-
To me, the DH.9 is beautiful - and the DH.4a is not. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder! - Which version are you thinking of?
All the best for your build! Richard
-
Probably the machine of Ingram and Wyncoll, the last option I believe.
I'd post a shot of this, but not sure what WNW would think of that.
Ryan
-
I post their pics Ryan,
I can’t imagine they’d be fussed about that.. it’s all good advertising.
Guy
-
I'll give it a whirl, if the moderators or WNW have a problem with it I can delete it.

This will be a very interesting machine, the variant is my favourite within the DH9s WNW proposes.

OK proof the kit is in an un started state, and we are off!

I’ve always had an eye on this kit Ryan.. might even be tempted to get one before the deadline - and I’d have a ‘how to’ guide to follow...
Guy
Ps does the lovely lady come with the kit? ;)

Thanks Guy, I will ask her but she has been putting up with my foolishness for some 26 years....

Nice choice Ryan, looking forward to your progress.

Thanks Juan, 2 pages of thread and not an assembly in site....need to get busy.

I wanted to share this shot of the just lovely surface detail on the fuselage, I wasn't expecting this.

OK back to parts prep.
Ryan
-
Yes, their moulding is ridiculously good... another reason to get one!
Guy
-
At the front of the fuselage there are two apertures for the carburetor pipes. As molded they are round however my decal version requires that they be oval. WNW provides a oval recess on the inside of just how much you need to remove. In a further example of good engineering the oval brass rings are etched oversized so if you are a little out of oval they will hide your sins.
I wanted to touch on how I attach PE cleanly. The trick with this is to hold them in place until you can get super glue on them to set. I use Elmers glue to tack them into place, now the Elmers will never hold the part forever, this is just to give me time to glue. You can see the white glue dots in the shot below. The glue also allows fine tuning before you add the super glue. The SG I use is the thin type applied with a micor brush, the head being cut to half its width. I this case the glue was applied from the back but its so thin you could have done from the front.

Great tip Ryan,
This is the point I usually get superglued fingerprints all over the plastic :o
Guy

Nice tip there Ryan... I will watch this one closely! Regards, Marc

Thanks guys more pics soon as this is fighting with my Albatros for desk time.
Ryan

Excellent tip. I will try it out when the situation arises.

As I’m looking at this rather large fuselage, I can’t help to think how massive the HP 0/400 is going to be!
Ryan
-
Not much to show, but did manage to get some primer on the PE work and started setting up painting jigs. The extreme close up show a rough surface, but that is exaggerated.

I did manage to sand off a couple of those "rivets" near the oval ports. Any ideas on how to replace the detail?
Ryan
-
Nice kit that one, really looking good! When it comes to rivets I have my punch-and-die set that makes plastic discs from 2.0 down to 0.6 mm. I have no idea if that’s small enough. They can be glued with Tamiya’s extra thin cement.
Best regars
Andreas
-
I have a mini punch, but like you say those are very small.
Ryan
-
You are a great source of tips Ryan - thanks. Can't help you directly on the rivets but I'm sure someone makes them and they are in a log here somewhere...
Cheers
Alistair
-
Thanks Alistair, I'll prob leave the rivets alone, if I need to I can simulate with paint.
Worked some more on the fuselage, cleaning and test fitting...the upper forward cover needs quit a bit of work to sit level. Triming flash, widening locating slots and the like.

Ryan

Doesn’t look quite a click fit Ryan!
Coming along nicely though.
Guy
-
Thanks Guy, but I am horrified at those magnified shots showing rough primer.
It simply just does not look like that in person.
Having said that, will steel wool take some of that out with out scratching the surface?
Ryan
-
Decent work going on here.
I use an MDC beading tool set to re-create and enhance rivets and rivet detail , a very good tool set.
-
Thanks Krow, I haven't done much yet, ;D
Those rivets are very small, perhaps a set from Archer would work.
Ryan
-
I'm sorry to bring this up yet again, but I tend to fixate on certain things. (it's a problem I have)
This rough primer coat around the carb intakes just wont leave me alone. The Tamiya primer is a great product and I know how to use it.
While I was perusing the pics of this build I noticed the rough glare on this pic of the bare plastic...here enlarged.
(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7820/32285711577_46c2d21a86_b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/RbYHeB)Ruff (https://flic.kr/p/RbYHeB) by The 3rd Placer (https://www.flickr.com/photos/51690681@N03/), on Flickr
Someone please put me out of my misery and tell me they see rough plastic too. ;D
This would explain the rough primer job in this area and I can move on.
Thanks and sorry again.
Ryan
-
I can see it Ryan,
I would have assumed it was just intentional ‘texture’?
Guy
-
Maybe, its a little heaver on the right side than left, perhaps someone could check their kit.
Thanks Guy.
-
I can see it Ryan,
I would have assumed it was just intentional ‘texture’?
Guy
I tend to agree. I see it but don't see a major issue in the primed photos. I have seen some closeups of SE5as for example that are FAR from being a beautifully smooth finish. Of course that is JMHO.
RAGIII
-
Yes I need to move on.
Once base coat then clear etc. the finish should level out, till then my macro shots maybe a little rough!
BTW on the rivet restoration I might try those Archer rivet decals, I haven't decided yet.
Of course white glue drops may do the trick also since I need maybe 3 of them....hmmmm.
Ryan
-
Ok back to building.
First up was the job of replacing the buttons on the cockpit padding, the first pic is what you get out of the box...nice but hard to clean up.
(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7851/47181672372_8a0ba00060_b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2eThppS)DH9 (https://flic.kr/p/2eThppS) by The 3rd Placer (https://www.flickr.com/photos/51690681@N03/), on Flickr
Using the smallest punch I had I replaced the buttons, later after they dry I can reduce the height of them and make them more button like.

The last pic is a tip I'd like to share when cleaning up parts like the internal framework. If you use a set of locking tweezers you can custom cut strips of sand paper to reach almost anywhere.

OK done for now, the goal is to get some wood painting this weekend.
Ryan

Good tip Ryan,
I must get some of those.
Guy
-
Yes i have another one that has a pointed tip to really get in tight.
Probably my number one tool I use.
Ryan
-
Just was thinking what exactly are these buttons for?
The padding is secured on either side of the fuselage, so what are these for, would they be snaps for a weather tarp?
Ryan
-
Loving this build Ryan and thank you for the many tips included within it.
-
Very nice start and useful modelling tips: Thank you for sharing.
About the buttons, if this was intended as a school aeroplane these may be for application of a curtain-screen for blind instrument flying practice, just a guess.
Ciao
Giuseppe
-
Thanks Giuseppe, I think you may be right.
There are several pics in the WS Datafile the show the "buttons"...so good job WNW for catching this small detail. Here is a shot from the net showing the buttons on the padding.

With this sitting right with me now, I finished the scratch work as well as rescribed missing or washed out lines on the padding itself. Once the new buttons dry I can sand them down.

I finally took the plunge and tried some hand graining with a chiseled brush. I'm no David Parker, but I'm reasonably happy with the results.
The first strokes are the scariest!

Did you use oils for the grain?
Claudio
Hey Claudio and RAG, thanks.
This is not done with oils, I painted with Vajello acrylics. 1/8" chisel or angled brush was used to paint.
Ryan
-
Nice Ryan,
And a little bit different :)
Guy
-
Thanks for checking in Guy, yes I did not want to work with oils on this one.
Ryan

Really nice wood effect Ryan :) I use Vallejo paints for my wood graining .

Thanks Terri, i'm enjoying learning this technique.

I love the wood graining Ryan and yet another useful tip taken onboard regarding your paint Jigs, just made some following your examples from a load of packing that was destined for recycling :D
-
Thanks Gilly I'm glad you were able to pick up a trick or two.
The wood grain is growing on me, I took another shot in standard light (and sized the pic to close to normal size) and am liking it more and more.

I need to refine the patterns on future parts and it should work out great. (Easy to find reference as I work for a cabinet shop) ;D
Ryan
-
Great work on that wood grain, Ryan. It looks very good!
Don't take this the wrong way, but I think the pattern can be improved. In the very first picture of it, on the left side, the pattern is too random. You may have done more work on it later because it looks different in later pictures. The right side looks better, with more of the dark areas connected.
I, too, will have to try this technique sometime. Thanks for sharing it.
-
Your absolutely right Ken, I used most of the interior to play around with the technique.
Very little of it will be seen (I'm not opening the engine bay), however the upper portions that are visible I think are passable.
Thanks for commenting, I still have the bottom tray to grain out and will try and improve the look on that part.
Ryan
PS in the first shot I had not applied the orangeish clear coat yet, once i did it made the finer brush strokes appear starker and more connected.
-
I'm certain you're near the top of the learning curve. ;)
-
If applied wood grain by brush was a foreign language, I could ask where the bathroom was...but regular conversations would baffle me. (for now ;D)
Ryan
-
Not really happy with the hand graining I stripped the fuse and tried a new oil technique, I am much happier with this result and am moving forward. BTW its normal for me to strip parts until I'm happy with them!
Here are the new fuse parts with some others I finished, note there is no stain coat or washes yet.

Good on you Ryan! I was actually afraid to say that your previous wood graining was much too over scaled for me. So I kept my mouth shut.
What you have now done looks just fantastic and masterful. I prefer little or virtually no wood grain to appear because when you scale down there never would be any grain except for a faint appearance.
I, for one, would be interested in your new technique because you have got it just right to my eye. 8)
Cheers
Alistair
-
Hi Alistair,
Yes the painted effect just did not sit well with me and I started over. One may ask why not practice on junk kits first, but i'm not the smartest sanding stick in the drawer.
I agree with your position on the grain, they should be seen and not heard.
While researching full size wood grain artists techniques, I came across the one seen in my pics. Basically what is done is you grain and wipe as usual using a brush in my case. The final step is to lightly go back over the grain and flatten it or stipple it into a finer grain. It really is magical and removes the goey appearence of the dragged brush. Try it out.

I am also a member of the "Less is Best" community regarding grain in scale.. I like your second attempt much better.

Thanks RAG, getting my second wind now.
Detailed out the floor board, just awaiting the clears and washes. I guessed maybe the planking area at the front was hardwood, so I had fun with some oil paint hand graining…the way to go by the way!

You're the master at woodgraining!
I'll have to try the stippling at the end technique.
-
Thanks Ken, but hardly a master, just willing to strip things until I feel right about them. :) (I cant right now, but I will post a pic of the brush I used to get the fine grain)
Speaking of strip, how does this vertical panel (at the top of the pic) look against the floor board, is it too light? It matches the light grain on the small rectangular flat panel on the fb, but wasn't sure if it looks right. On the other hand it is deep in the cockpit and the lightness may help.

I think having different looking wood grains on different panels helps convey that they are different pieces, as long as the wood grain is not completely wrong for the application (if that's possible).
-
Oh it's possible, just look at my early effort! :)

That’s an awesome woodwork, Ryan. It really looks great.

Very fine woodwork!

Thanks sir, I wanted to get a little brown back in the parts and knock the sting out of the yellow tone that was visible. so mixed up a thin veil of wash brown and it did the trick.

Agreed Rick,
Love the tones Ryan.

Thanks for checking in Guy, I think to expedite and have more control over toning the other featureless parts I'm going to try and spray the oil paint though the airbrush to even things out.
You know me always experimenting!

I ended up buggering up the wood grain and made a mess of things.

Here is the current state of the wood parts...... :'(

Hi Ryan
Given how extremely good your skills are I am thinking you have crossed a line to where excellent is not enough? Although I haven't got there on WW1 kits I kind of met that line in wood modelling and would pull things apart even if nobody else could see what bugged me. Hope you keep on with the DH - your skills and tips are an inspiration to me. Your willingness to do it again to get it right is also inspirational but maybe your "get it right" is just in your eyes? I like your work just as it is! Keep going mate.
Cheers,
Alistair

Thanks Alistair where do I send my payment for psychological services?! I do indeed need to let some stuff go learn to just press on.
Your words are extremely appreciated.
Back to the build, ok what to do now.
In a fit of adventure I decided to stick the entire internal frame together. Once the parts were stripped once again in a noxious application/ dipping of Easy Off, 91% Isop. Finally the hard stuck paint surrendered in a bath of Simple Green.
Switching things up I purchased the Vallejo Wood set and commenced to spraying, first off with the primer that comes with the set...IDF Sand Grey.

After this application, I shot some linen on the fuel tank area....Tamiya Deck Tan.

Then out came the masking tape to protect this area and then a smooth blast of Vallejo Model Air Golden Brown was selected for my wood color. Masking tape removed, it all looked good.

In case your curious on how I'm going to paint all the internals fittings now that it is glued up, don't worry, I am wondering how myself! ???

Ryan - really glad to see you back at work on the DH-9- I was really disappointed when you needed to stop. I've been working on the same kit for about a year. We moved and I have had a lot of work stuff, so I've only had about an hour a week to work on it with long gaps while the workshop got packed and unpacked. No build log - if I cut into the hour to post, I wouldn't be making any progress. Working on the Lobster color scheme- learned how to use a silhouette cutter to make masks for the stripes. Just finished buttoning up the fuselage.
It has been really helpful watching someone else working on the same kit. I'm glad you have restarted, and am really looking forward to seeing your progress.

Thanks a bunch Dave, I certainly encourage you to post..even if it’s just a series of pics, I do that sometimes when I’m too lazy or don’t have the time.

I am pleased that you have not given up Ryan: please read carefully what others have written and take that on board before you stop again.
I have experienced something similar to you - when I had almost finished two large builds (Dornier and Gunbus) I felt that neither was worth completing and had a desire to just throw them in the bin: the errors kept looking back at me... When I showed the completed models to others they asked where were the errors and said they could not see them even when I pointed them out...! My brother has the same problem (remember HMS Swift?) - we the modellers can see what others do not. Near enough is good enough is what I have had to learn (repeatedly), and I suspect that you have to too.
Do keep going with this - it will be a mini-masterpiece when it is finished - at least in my eyes.
Stephen.

I’m liking that already Ryan,
There are pros for sticking it altogether first.
Keep it up - it’ll look spectacular ;)

Your re-start on the DH9 is an inspiration Ryan, so thanks for showing us that plastic disasters can be remedied.
As someone who has had two Wingnut disasters this year- a Pfalz D XII and a Sopwith Camel, your DH9 recovery has inspired me to drag the Pfalz off its shelf of shame and reassess the status.
Many thanks for showing us how to recover from these setbacks.
cheers

Keep at it, Ryan.
All model builders make mistakes. The great ones fix them and continue on!
-
Excellent restart Ryan, looking forward to your progress.
-
Thanks everyone for the warm encouragement, I will press on.
Speaking of that I neglected to shed light on a couple of things I had to do the the frame. The first one is the extra plastic brace I glued in to help the frame not be as wobbly.
More important than that was the notch I created ion the tab that locates the IP Panel. If you don't remove some of this tab you will never get the panel in later. This assumes you make the crazy decision to glue everything up as I have!
