With retirement coming up quickly I think I will be able to handle two entries. So in addition to the DVII I will be doing the CSM Nieuport 17 Early with the markings as seen on the Box Art.

Brave man, you are! I love this kit and am sure you'll make it a beautiful one! Looking forward to your build!
Richard
-
Did you just say "retirement" Rick? I'll save formal Congratulations for later when the day arrives however that's great news; I can't imagine your modelling productivity when you get at it full time! :o As for the "Noop", good on you, thanks for supporting the Tribute Build with a second project already!
Cheers,
Lance

yes!
following this build very closely: as i am starting the same subject as my entry to the group build, I’ll pick some tips from you build!

Ah a great choice. Lots of clean and crisp parts in this kit. I love the elegant wings. I think there is an other outstanding build rising up.
Bye,
Manni
-
I'm interested in seeing this one built. I like the looks of this Nieuport.
Let us know your impressions of the kit.
-
Thanks for all of the "Positive Vibes" guys 8) It will probably be a couple of weeks before any progress is made on either of my entries :o
RAGIII
-
Will follow along on this one as well Rick , enjoying the one you have on the go now :)
Terri
-
Two eyes fixed on your progress :o
Good luck, RICK!

Seems to be a great kit. Have fun with building it, Rick!
Cheers,
Frank
-
... so there are three Nieuports on your workbench or did I miss one ;) They surely will all be little gems!
Andreas

Good choice, I've found it a great kit.
Ciao

Nice choice here, Rick! It'll be lovely to follow this one in detail.... And I hope that retirement brings you lots of building time!
Regards,
Marc
-
I think that you are very brave tackling two kits at once Rick - even when you are retired! My experience is that all the time that you think you are going to have somehow gets occupied by other things - especially life!
Stephen.
-
Whenever I’ve done a double build it seems to sap my modelling Mojo, but it certainly makes sense. Go for it Rick.
Guy
-
Great Choice! The Nie.17 is first in my Top 10 list. I will follow your build with interest, I have the same kit in the "to do" pile
-
I shall be following your build with great interest Rick and look forward to learning a great deal from it.
-
A belated thanks for the encouragement! I have made a VERY SMALL beginning to my build. Having read some comments about others having difficulty with the Acetate Film center section I used a spare center piece to experiment. I applied Microscale Metal Foil Adhesive to the wing section and the edge of the acetate. Once dry,( it dries clear), I applied the film. Worked like a charm. I reinforced the leading edge with just a bit of a "New" glue I am trying out. That also worked well with NO Fogging. So now on with the build.

PS: A question. What paint brands and colors have others been using for the Brown, Green , and undersurface?
-
Good tip on transparent cemenr, pity I already sealed mine with white glue with some troubles. For what I learned with my build the auxiliary spars were sheet metal with lightening holes and four inner rigging lines with tensioners are visible. I will post a picture as soon I will be on the home computer, later today. In retrospective I had to adjust better the seam lines between inner and outer sections of upper wing as it becomes much visible after painting and care is needed to have clean joints as paint thikness is enough to give troubles. Have fun with the building, it's a really fine model.

So began to move forward today. I did most of the wood grain using Acrylic Oils. The tank is copper and just a small amount of assembly is done.

Ondra
Thanks Ondra. Depending on how thick the application is they are dry to the touch in an hour or two. (I really spread mine out over the base coat to the point they are almost a stain) Not sure about fully cured but would guess 24 hrs.
RAGIII
Lovely, Rick!
Thanks for the comment Przemo!

Spectacular woodgrain, I must try these acrilic oils as lineseed oils are really slow drying.

Terri
Thanks T!. As for the upper cowl panel...I don't know ::) I will have to check references. I looked through all of the builds here and this is the one part no one seems to show before it is installed. Funny thing is I don't even remember how I painted mine on my Late 17 build :o
RAGIII
-
The Jury is still out as to the forward decking. Edgar has confirmed with a blueprint drawing that the Nieuport 27 was 4mm ply. As I see no reason they would make a change from the 17 to the 27 I am going with wood. Hell it wont be seen anyway ;D
RAGIII
PS: I am getting some outside confirmation for ply, just for the record.
-
Looking great Rick, go with your gut (unless some picture proves you wrong). Really enjoying your build.
-
I like the color of the woodgrain. Very realistic
-
Thanks Guys. I appreciate the comments! I have progressed on the interior work. Actually all that is left is rigging and touch up. I added a Brass bezel to the instrument and some plumbing on the left side.

Thanks Terri. I have progressed since these photos were taken. The cockpit rigging is done and all is about ready to assemble.

So as of today it is all buttoned up and ready for just a small amount of filling and sanding, then primer.

what a beauty!
I can’t remember why, but i cut the air intake short in my build.... :-[ now the do not exit the fusolage.... any idea on how to amend?

Thanks Edo. As for your pipes I would simply insert a piece of tubing from the outside cut to meet the kit parts. ( unless your plan is to leave the side panel off).

I am catching up Rick - life has been getting in the way. The cockpit and associated details are truly impressive - the colours are so realistic. Des would have been very impressed with this.

Thanks Amigo! So todays progress. I have put on the "Initial" colors for the light blue under surface and the green portion of the upper surface camo. I will go back after the brown is applied and add some darker and lighter shades...or at least that is the plan 8) I did manage to get a little green overspray on the lower fuselage which will be touched up later.

The results of yesterdays sessions. The brown is on. I used the Model made by XAN as a guide for the camo as I am doing the same airframe with the markings used by Dorme supplied in the kit. Not perfect but close enough. Next up is doing the blue outline for the wing and tail surfaces.

I am catching up Rick - my you do ove quickly these days and I think that I know the reason why...?! I only restarted modelling after I retired but I still seem to move at the rate of a geriatric snail.
The engine looks really good - such a shame to hide it under the cowling. The paintwork is well up to your usual high standard too.
Stephen.

Well here is the newest update. I painted the outline on the wings and tail surfaces...twice. First time I was too conservative as to the width of the blue outline ::) So from there I progressed to beginning to apply the markings. Once the markings are all applied I will start some weathering.

Thanks Guys and Girl for all of the compliments. So now I must confess to a self inflicted error. I had all of the info I needed but still managed to get the number 12 on the fuselage in the wrong space. I thought about leaving it as is...for a second! I am attaching some pics that Edgar posted on FB so that anyone doing this scheme can be aware of the proper location. I am Happy to say that My Amigo Bud is supplying the replacement Numbers. After several days of looking at photos and waiting for my replacement decals I am now back on track. Since I had to remove the numbers from the fuselage I took the opportunity to relocate the upper elevator cable exit to the proper location for this aircraft. Just finished the touch up paint and will apply the 12's later tonight. I also have begun to weather the upper wing.

The camouflage and weathering on the wings look good, Rick.
It's usually good to be forced to stop working on a model for a short while so you can take a step back and have a look at what you are doing. I get too rushed many times and forget to include something - a seat cushion for my Hanriot, for example.
-
Thanks Ken. Yes sitting back gave me the inspiration to make the small correction on the elevator control exit so it was profitable!

Today I did some Moderate Weathering with Oils and Pastels. I also applied a satin finish to the forward fuselage and semi gloss/mixed with flat finish to the fabric areas. I have added the rigging to the center wing cutout/framework. Next up is adding the clear panels then turning it into a Sesquiplane 8)

Some progress made. I attached the upper wing but while doing so I managed to plug all of the pre drilled rigging holes. It took some effort and a few beers to re drill the holes...not without some minor damage. Major rigging is now finished bt will need to do some touch up and repair.

These will be the last update photos prior to the completed post. I have finished all of the rigging(just need to trim a couple of wire attachments and paint turnbuckles). I have added the details to the Lewis mount and once the Map roller and touch up are done she is finished.

Here are the Final Photos. I have enjoyed building this one as a Tribute to Des. The only Modifications were the Pulsometer and some tubing in the interior, the Map and Roller, relocating the upper elevator control wire exit ports, and the Lewis gun mount mods.
