Title: My Tribute Build to Des-WNW Albatros D.Va
Post by: lcarroll on February 04, 2019, 03:04:56 AM
Since I have the honor of being one of the Judges for our Group Build Contest in honor of our founder, Des Delatorre, I can't fairly participate in the contest. I've therefore chosen to do a personal Tribute Build entered here in the Under Construction section to honor Des' memory and the friendship I was so fortunate to have with him for a regrettably short time.
Des was, as we all recall fondly, a Master Modeller who produced magnificent replicas of every subject he tackled. He was particularly adept in the scratch Building discipline and with the preservation and display of his collection facilitated through the kind efforts of Wingnut Wings his models will be enjoyed by many in the coming years. It is so fitting and touching that this membership are dedicating their entries to his memory, and I didn't want to be left out so here is my contribution off to the side.
I've chosen one of my favorite aircraft as the subject, and an excellent Kit as well, the Wingnut Wings Albatros D.Va. Long ago I "stashed" two of these Kits along with two of the earlier D.V variant as my greedy logic dictates that one can never have enough "Albies' and besides, two each would be the minimum for any collection given the virtually endless number of spectacular color schemes available.

Here's the standard box contents shot. I've already noticed that the wings, top and lower, are slightly bent and will require a little "hot water therapy" to get them true. I suspect five or more years in a basement storage room may well be the culprit.........

I'll be using all of the illustrated References for this Build and several more, particularly the considerable photo references on the Wingnut Wings Site.......

I've chosen this scheme from Pheon's Decal Set 32051 JG 17 as I wanted something with a natural wood finish for this build, lots of color, and not all that commonly seen. This aircraft was flown by the Staffelfuhrer Hptm. Freiherr von Esebeck in late 1917 until killed in action in may of 1918.

I'll be adding quite a pile of after market products to the model in addition to those beautiful Pheon decals, starting with Aviattic's excellent lozenge fabric for the wings:

I also have some left over Alb. D.III Photo Etch that is common to the later variants, a sheet of HGW "nails" to experiment with, and an optional upgraded PE Radiator.

Last for now are the standard HGW Fabric seat belts, a pile of Taurus resin upgrades for the D.IIIa engine, and a pair of Gas patch's outstanding Spandaus. I'll also be using Aeroclub Instrument Bezels and a fellow Forum member is providing some tiny cockpit additions for me to try later.

I'm very much looking forward to this Build.
     This one's for you Des!

Cheers,
Lance

That is a huge amount of accessories and references, and in your skillful hands all will come together to a fantastic model!

Have fun,

The fun has already started in this little "adventure"! The interior wood effect including the frame members is presently drying and the ammunition and fuel containers have their base coats.
Only the ejector pin marks visible after assembly were cleared up........

The grooves for the frame members were covered in masking tape strips to keep them free of paint.

The various frame members and other bits.....

...... and the resin seat cushion from the HGW Seat Belt Set. (Albatros D.V / D.Va Set 132513) with it's base coat. The missing button will get covered by the lap belt.

I may just start on the engine while all of this dries.
Cheers,
Lance

As usual I have been away when the action starts! What a shame this is not in the competition because I am sure that in other circumstances it would have won a prize. What a marvellous tribute to Des (as are all of the others in the GB), - I am sure that he is both proud and smiling at us.

Thanks for your comments All. I am far overdue for an update so here's a record of progress since the brief report of two weeks ago.
The cockpit has been completed, a long and fiddley process but a great refresher on the layout and function of the "office" on this little beauty.
I started with the seat and floor module assembly with the first three formers and then the forth former with the Ammo cans and fuel tank mounted. These were attached permanently to the right fuselage half per the instructions. At this point I completed and installed the fuel controls panel at the right side of the fuselage. The hand pumps for the right side, instruments, and several "plumbing" lines were added. The HGW seat belts were installed just prior to this step. Once the flight controls were installed and rigged the engine compartment formers were added and the right engine bearer installed. The left engine bearer will be installed after the fuselage is closed up.
Here's the right side of the cockpit just prior to installation of the flight controls:

....... and here's the completed fuel controls panel prior to installation. the selector templates are the kit decals, the selector levers "scratched"
with stretched sprue and contoured with flat pliers.

The throttle on the control column hand grip and the auxiliary throttle (upper left with circular end) are not represented in the kit so were "scratched" and added. All instruments used kit decals, Aeroclub Bezels, and multi Future applications for lenses.

The cables for the gun triggers and the control stick throttle were added using EZ Line. Please excuse the dust and plastic crumbs evident in the photos, I inevitably fail clean up prior to the photo phase! :-\

The left fuselage had only two small assemblies to add, the Engine Spark Retard control and a section of pushrod to mate with the first former in it's travel and the Bosch Magneto starter box.

I forgot to remove the two protrusions above the spark advance control but they will not be visible once the fuselage is closed.

Here's a couple of shots of the HGW Belts.......

And last, the engine compartment. The lower components have been painted with the standard "grey green" protective coat and a bit of spilled/vented engine oil spread around using the large brush "flick and splash" method as I term it. Not much if any of this will be seen as I plan to complete the model with the engine fully paneled for a change.

Today I closed the fuselage and will be adding the second engine bearer, then it's time to get a coat of gloss white or tan on the wings in preparation for the Aviattic Lozenge and complete the top end of the engine.
Cheers,
Lance

I got the fuselage closed up yesterday and it fit like a glove. Filling was limited to just a small amount of Tamiya Surface Primer (The grey one)

I also installed the second engine bearer ......

This is truly wonderful Lance - modelling at its very best. I see that you are practising scratch building too - not long then before we see a complete scratch built model fly off your bench!

Did you use copper wire for the fueel pipes in the cockpit?

Thanks Guy, Juan, and Frank for looking in and for commenting so kindly. Stephen, very kind of you, and far too generous! Yes, the plumbing is copper wire. I salvage any I can from broken small appliances and other discarded household items, have quite a pile of the stuff. I'm not sure that I'll be tackling a full Scratch Build soon, but some heavily modified Kits are much on my mind of late. Hacking up a Camel to make a "Comic" is tempting and I'd love to do a 1:32 Scale Albatros W.4.
So much to do, so little time as the old saying goes!
Cheers,
Lance

Outstanding work on your Albatros Lance! The interior is a true work of art. I was going to start an Albatros too but instead got distracted by a Wingnuts Junkers D.1.

I'm following your Albatros with much interest.

I'm also loving the many inspired builds we are seeing on the Des memorial group build board but as I feel I have to be impartial to all entrants, I can't comment on that board.

But I am delighted beyond words at the wonderful models being made in Des' honour and your Albatros epitomises for me the spirit of our tributes to him.

Thanks Manni and Dave. I too cannot comment on the Tribute Threads due to the requirement to remain impartial as a member of the Judging Team. That in itself is frustrating in a way; there are so many terrific Builds happening there and I'm impressed beyond words at the spirit of this Tribute to Des. I still wanted to be part of that, thus this "unregistered" Build in Des' honor.
Really great work, all of you!

A small update to keep up with progress on this. The Aviattic Lozenge was applied after a gloss finish of Tamiya X2 White was sprayed onto the wing  surfaces and followed with some light grey pre-shade.

I used their 5 Color Faded versions.

I then used "Salmon" or pink rib tapes from Wingnut Wings A/M Decal Sheet 30005 1:32 Scale Wing Tapes. These were sealed with a coat of Tamiya Clear hand brushed.

The woodwork on the fuselage has one more session remaining; I'm doing it in sections to achieve some contrast between panels.

The open area mid fuselage is where the checker board decal will be.

I'll complete the wood work today, then it's on to decal addition and possibly prop carving before going back to complete the engine. I'm all over the map on this Build, I keep jumping back and forth between all the various steps.
Cheers,
Lance

Thanks for looking in Juan and Rick. I spent the rest of my Model time today cutting and sanding veneer strips to laminate for the prop, I'll get them glued and into a vice tomorrow. Then it's the carving stage which has worked remarkably well the last several times, hopefully the trend continues! :o I'm looking forward to the final product as I'm trying the new veneers I sourced recently, pear wood and Alaskan white cedar from Syren Ship Models in the USA.

Thank you both Stephen and Frank. I got not even close to the workbench today, lots of real life chores to catch up on and great news from the Kennel I've been in contact with to find a new family member. I've kept German Shepherd Dogs (Deutsche Schaferhundes, Frank, which I'm certain you'll agree are about as great a canine companion that you could wish for!) all of my life and recently lost my last best friend at 12 years. Today the news arrived that the litter I was interested in was born and it looks like I've got the first choice of 3 males who arrived this morning. I'm positively "pumped", looks like come June I'll be a busy fellow and probably lose a few hours of sleep for a few nights!
I hope to get back to this Build tomorrow, probably with the last of the wood graining on the fuselage and maybe a start on the prop.
Cheers,
Lance

I'm well overdue for an update on this Build so here's progress up until today. I carved the prop after laminating alternating strips of Alaskan Cedar and Pear veneers. It's stained and ready for several coats of varnish however I'm contemplating a second one with thinner veneer, this one has 5 laminations but they are a bit thick to my eye.

Next I completed the wood effect on the fuselage changing the "streak" color for the panels slightly to attempt some contrast, it worked out very nicely and I'm happy with the effect. The decals were added after a few coats of Future. I used the Pheon Set and the colors are really striking. I did have some challenges fitting them and had to leave a gap, to be touched up with paint later on the underside. As usual I also cut the bands into sections for ease of handling.

Next came the engine and it's still work in progress and very much in the rough stage. The Taurus intake manifold nuts and overhead valve assembly was added as well and the priming cups will be the next addition.

For this one I chose to try scratched spark plugs to make the connection of the ignition wires easier and cleaner. I used two"slide fit" tube sizes and am happy with the results, here's a shot of some of the tiny bits that weren't gobbled up by the floor monster, I think I made two dozen of both pieces to get the 12 plugs I needed!

Next comes more engine work and then things should really start to come together.

Cheers,
Lance

Lance, I would also say that 5 lamination are not enough.
I counted the layers on many original pictures and I often have seen 7 or more.
Do you have original pictures of that airscrew? Very often, but not always, there was the dark mahogany layers outside. The reason for this multi-wood layering was a embargo, so they tried to create more propellers with less mahogany and used german hard wood for the other layers. But I think the hard mahogany was outside for a robust mounting.

Beside that the Alaskan Cedar do not show much grain and looks like a nice option. Waht do you think about that wood?

Cheers,
Frank

Frank,
We are agreed on that. I have dozens of good photos and thinning the strips would provide more lams, and I hadn't caught on to the darker mahogany outer thing so thanks for that little tidbit! I like both of the woods however the cedar is quite soft compared to the pear so careful carving is a requirement. I guess a second carving session is in my future!

Lance,

Your fuselage looks absolutely wonderful in those markings: the wood effect is very convincing in my eyes. Don't you just love the ping sound as yet another delicate part that you have almost finished with great labour, (and probably some unrepeatable language), takes off on its unique and singular flight to oblivion? Only to be found later when it is no longer needed because you have moved on to another stage....!  The engine is well up to your usual very high standard: Des would be very pleased indeed to see this WIP.

Stephen.

 Stephen,
Thank you for your comment. Yes, you've captured the phenomenon of what I term the "tweezerpult" very well. I've mentioned before that I've located such errant missiles everywhere from on my dog's head to the adjacent room, and usually as you say when it's no longer required! Just a part of the model making madness we all indulge in I guess! :-\

I totally agree with the above comments: your finished fuselage is wonderful, as the remaining details of engine and propeller. I'm also gathering a lot of useful tips from your build and now I know I'm not alone in being plagued by "tweazapult", you made exactly the idea in a single word...  ;D

Dave, Giuseppe, and Guy....... Thank you all. The color scheme is certainly a "shiner", It's the reason I chose this Pheon Set (32051) some time ago. There's actually a few more included that are nearly as attractive. As for the ever present and in this house inevitable likelihood of launching small parts into oblivion I deem myself an expert; I could probably construct a whole new model with all the small bits hiding here if I could just find half of them! The prop is in line for a second attempt with more laminations the more I consider it. I have it in full view as I work away on the engine and it's much on my mind. :-\

Lance,

With reference to the propellor: I know that they were laminated and why, but I have some doubts about the colour contrasts on some models. I am currently building a British machine which had a laminated propellor and I have studied carefully coloured photos of the machine which I wish to depict. I studued it carefully in the museum at Hendon too. I have also been looking carefully at photos and real propellors of other British machines and what strikes me is that the laminations on the museum machine and others are barely visible, even in good light and close to. If the light strikes at certain angles the laminations do become clearer, but they remain relatively subdued.

I am aware that German propellors were made from different woods to those used in Britain, as Frank has pointed out, but were the contrasts in lamination colours really as marked as with your propellor? I do not wish to set off an argument nor do I wish to appear to be critical - I am only asking a question. I am sure that propellors from the time exist in museums etc, but do we know what the effects layers of varnish have had? English propellors were certainly heavily varnished and I suspect (but cannot prove), that these coatings also dulled the contrast in the colouration of the layers.

I suspect that this could start a discussion and lead you thread astray - again not my intention - and I also suspect that there will probably be as many opinions as there are modellers!! (Shades of PC10?)

In any event I agree that more laminations are needed to make the propellor more realistic - but you are more than capable of dealing with that minor issue.

Stephen.

Stephen,
You are correct in your comments on British (and French as well) props, the different layers and contrast are not usually visible to any great extent. I believe that is due to the wood used and also a combination of stain and tinted varnish used. For that reason I don't carve my own props for those subjects, rather I use the oil streaking method we use on our wood panel technique in most cases. Even a limited study of period photos shows a marked contrast between laminations on the vast majority of German made props; they used far different woods and shortages of raw materials further limited their choices. It would appear they also used a nearly clear varnish on the final finish.
As for the number of laminations they vary as well, but I'm the first to admit that the prop I illustrate here is short at least two! It's back to the work bench for that detail .......
As always thanks for your comments, they are much appreciated. It's both gratifying and inspiring to receive positive suggestions and observations from our Members, I'll post photos of the "real" propeller soon!  :)
Cheers,
Lance

Lance, back to the step of your wing decals. I have a question here, because I have used the Aviatic decals only once, an in that case it was a pre-cut release.
Now I have the normal panel of fabric. And I have a very detailed description in a Datafile about the layout of the fabric. On the original wing there was a overlap not on the wing rib, just between two ribs.
So do you use also a overlap on the decals or cut one side, so that there is  close touch but no overlap?
The decals are clear, but I don't know how it looks like if there are two layers of them.

Thanks in advance,
Frank
Title: Re: My Tribute Build to Des-WNW Albatros D.Va
Post by: lcarroll on March 18, 2019, 10:45:08 PM
Frank,
Be very careful to NOT overlap the clear decals as they will show a very dark stripes where there are two layers and completely change the color to almost black on that area. I "butt" them together making sure the joins are a very sharp and straight cut. You can overlap the white backing versions which I use mostly for wing tapes or sometimes because it helps with the leading edge joint if the white backed one is added last.
Cheers,
Lance

Hello Lance - just saw this latest update. Very nice! Love that blonde look to the wood on your fuselage. Too bad you are re-thinking the prop - it turned out as one of your best, I thought. Like you say, perhaps one or two extra laminations near the front would work. But studying Albatros props for the last while it does seem that some of the colours really stood out against each other. Looking forward to seeing more updates! On another note - Nanton may be out of the question for me as plans may have changed :-(

Thanks Gary. I've done another prop with 7 laminations that I'm happy with although the first one isn't that far off if at all. I've been back in the References and found several that match it with only 4 layers apparent. Photos of the new one to follow shortly.
As for Nanton I'll send you a PM later today.

A small update before I get ahead of myself again. I followed up on the propeller replacement and am much happier with the result. Although I have found photos of several with 4 or 5 laminations I like the replacement which has 7 much better. It needs a coat of semi gloss varnish to tone it down a bit.

The newer wood I sourced is much tighter in grain and harder, it only took 2 coats of varnish to finish it nicely.

I have also completed the engine. The Taurus add ons worked nicely with the overhead assembly, cooling manifold nuts, and primer cups and valves going on nicely, but a slow operation.

The ignition wires are salvaged telephone wire.

The exhaust pipe was added after a session with Alclad II and some pigments.

At this point I thought long and hard about adding the nails so evident in the photos of natural finished "Albatri", and finally decided to "take the plunge"! I knew HGW had a resin transfer set of nails or two but opted for the "Rosie the Riveter" tool I've had for years.

After a lot of careful work and no lack of nervous fretting I'm pleased with the results. I used AK Interactive dark brown Wash to highlight the effect.

There was one minor "Gaff" in the process, in experimenting with how to keep the nail lines straight and in position I tried some tape, and discovered that two coats of Future over the decals was not enough! Fortunately I have some left over stock from another Pheon set that used  near identical colors so repair should be doable!

So, other then my "Mister Bean Act" with the tape all's well thus far. Now it's time to get some of this stuff put together.
Cheers,
Lance

The new prop is a pure piece of art - you are getting better with every new prop! In 1/32 the prop decals are very nice too.
And I also like the engine and your "nails".
But I guess a third or fourth layer of future are not putting the decal on the safe side - if the glue below is not very sticky, then a tape on top is always dangerous ::)

Frank

Thanks for your very kind comments Stephen, they are very greatly appreciated. I've finally managed a couple of productive sessions working on this one and here's the results via a small update.
I've installed the engine and the guns along with a bit more "plumbing" and the wind screen. The guns are the Kit supplied ones with the Kit PE cooling jackets added and the barrels drilled out.

The lower rigging attachment points have been made from 36 Guage Nichrome wire and drilled/CA'ed into the upper wing positions, I also got the radiator installed in the wing:

Nichrome eyelets were then added to Gas Patch turnbuckles and then drilled and CA'ed into the lower wing positions after which the rigging lines were attached using "Bob's Buckles".  I used a combination of 1:32 and 1:48 scale turnbuckles.

Next came the Photo Etch panel supplied for between the guns:

Last, the torn decal repair was done. A kind offer of help by way of surplus markings from our very own "Dave from Dubai" was gratefully accepted and, in a great feat of defeating the trials and tribulations of the international postage conspiracy, he carried them from Dubai to the USA on one of his scheduled trips, mailed them from Seattle WA. and I had them in only a few days, many Thanks kind Sir!
I may still replace the "shield" decal with the spare I received from Dave, the machro photos make it look far worse then it is however a new one would certainly look cleaner.

I guess at this point I can't avoid mounting the upper wing and getting a start on the rigging. Wish me luck and hopefully a lack of "Banana Strut Disease"!

Cheers,
Lance

Thanks Dave. I am a bit frustrated presently, I am not the first to discover that the upper engine cowling panels are not a great fit. The right side worked out with a bit of trimming and use of the "Armstrong Method" but the left side is proving impossible to fit without gaps, especially at the front top of the "ring" portion so I'm defaulting to an open engine bay on that side. Thankfully I completed the extra engine detail just in case there was such a problem!

I agree, the cowlings in a number of cases have been a challenge; the sole criticism I can lodge in the case of the Wingnut product. I'll add, however, that like you I tend to regard myself as the probable cause given the generally superb engineering and fit of the Kits.

Finally, some progress so an update is in order.
First a couple of extra details added, here's the radiator cooling shutter control and lever under the upper wing....

..... and the carb control rod and levers:

Next the cabanes were mounted using a simple template for alignment and spacing:

The upper wing went on without problems using five minute epoxy to allow for final adjustments , the "V" Struts added and, once the epoxy was fully cured the model went on to the indispensible "Third Hand" for rigging.

With the exception of the upper and lower wing Drag wires the rigging lines were all completed, the former will be done after final assembly to avoid damaging and having to redo them.

Last added were the rear Flight Control Lines:

The rigging went quite well with only one minor problem, a line and eyelet popping out late in the sequence. After a thrilling hour of drill twisting between the wings with large fumbly fingers all was well again. Next comes assembly and installation of the wheel assembly.

Bench time is very rare these past several weeks as my newly acquired German Shepherd pup has arrived, moved in and taken over the household. He allows about 6-7 minutes daily when I can do as I wish, the rest of the time is keeping up to his antics as he grows into his ears and legs!

"Max" has already adjusted to his spot in the model room den, here he's doing a little last minute research for me.

I should be able to get a little more time at the bench when he grows up in 5 or 6 years ........
Cheers,
Lance

Your details that were added are exceptional. Love the rigging and Turnbuckles. As for the Pup, I would love to have one Myself but can't talk SWMBO into a German Shepherd  :(

Thanks Guy and Rick. As for the Pup Rick he's number 6 over the past 55 years, I love the breed. They have two shortfalls, the little guys don't live long enough (11-12 years average) and they need a lot of work and attention, especially when young.
I'm glad to be close to the finish line on this Build as time is rare these days. This Build for Des has made me appreciate even more all he brought to the Hobby and the inspiration he provided. It reminds me of him and our long distance phone chats often, I wish there had been more.
Cheers,
Lance

I've finally managed a couple of productive sessions working on this one
Yes Lance, not only productive and with a great result too!

I hope the daily 6-7 minutes the pup allows are enough to finish this nice bird ;) Nice guy!

Cheers,
Frank (in hope to find time and mood soon to get back to bench)

Super detailing Lance. I really must learn how to use turnbuckles if I attempt another of these very large scale models - they really are essential to making a realistic model. You have v=certanly mastered the art.

Stephen.

I think it's too late Pete, he's stuck with Max however we are now calling him "Mad Max". The reason is probably obvious, what a "holy terror" he can be at times! :o

   Thanks for your comment Gaz.
With the exception of some small paint touch ups and the addition of the cowling strap this one is complete. I'll be doing the strap after a tour through all the reference publications I have on hand, as I'm not sure how it would look with the one side upper cowling panels removed.
The rigging drag lines have been completed, prop and spinner mounted, and the radiator header tank installed.....

Well, here we are 3 weeks later and I guess I should declare this one completed. Since my last post the touch-ups were completed and this project traveled to the Western Canadian Regional Model Contest held in Nanton, Alberta at Canada's WWII Bomber Command Museum and Memorial. I was honored when it achieved the Gold Medal in the WW.I Aircraft Category.

I'm pleased with how this one turned out and for the opportunity to dedicate this Build to the memory of Des Delatorre, and now his beloved wife Adrienne. They both brought much to scale aircraft modeling and particularly to the wholesome and welcoming atmosphere of this Forum.
I'll post some photos in Completed Models shortly.
Cheers,
Lance

I want to echo what Dave has written: a very fine tribute to Des' memory and to Adrrienne, and a well deserved gold medal. I too think that you represent the best qualities of this forum and follow in the footsteps of Des in that respect.

Lance, I can only sign all the nice comments about you, your Albatros and your tribute to Des.

But what I found also impressive is the difference between the dusty and weathered finished model on page 10, compared to the pics on page 9 :o What a huge difference ...

I will wait patiently for the final pictures.
