Title: Completed:WNW Fokker DVII 1/32nd scale: Jasta 4.Ernst Udet "DU Doch Nicht"
Post by: RAGIII on February 02, 2019, 11:45:06 PM: I have decided to build the controversial Fokker DVII "Du Doch Nicht" as my Entry/Tribute to Des. Still undecided as to what "Version" of the many possibilities I will go with. Of course my entry had to have stripes 8)

Post by: RAGIII on March 07, 2019, 06:03:30 AM: First, thanks for all of the encouragement! No need to go into the history of Du Doch Nicht but I will now "Officially" go over my choices on Manufacturer and scheme. Funny thing is I know from my poll that at least half of you will not agree ::)
1. OAW built from the first production run.
2. Red and White stripes on the upper and lower surface of the upper wing.
3. Red Fuselage with Black Nose
4. Chevron on the upper tail
5. NO white stripes on the fuselage decking.

I have been involved in and read most of the arguments on this Machine so lets just agree that NO ONE can prove anything! My final decision was based largely upon what Jasta 4 was flying at the time as well as Dave Roberts discussion in The Fokker DVII anthology Vol 2.

QUESTION:
So my first actual photos. I will be using the Aviattic Lozenge for the lower wing surfaces. Next comes the challenge. I have identified the panels seen in the photos as the proper ones from the OAW sprue. My issue is which radiator to use and which upper cockpit decking. ( None of the choices in the WNW OAW DVII utilize the early panels or exhaust) If all else fails I will go with the similar items from the early Fokker built example as they were very close to the early OAW in Most respects. Any assistance is appreciated!

Here is some of My reference for the build. I am starting with the wings figuring if I don't get the stripes right I can go to plan B 8) This is my 5th WNW DVII and I noticed a Small issue I had not seen on any of the previous builds. The upper wing trailing edge scallops did not match up so I had to do some filling and sanding on the scallops. ( Seems like the upper half was just a fraction shorter chordwise, on the scallops). Next up Aviattic lozenge on the lower wing and some nice red and white stripes on the upper.

A belated thanks T!.

So having finished the Nieuport build I went back to this one. As seen above I am using the Dave Roberts drawing in the Windsock Fokker Anthology as My pattern. I enlarged the drawing and did some basic measuring and began to mask. All went well with no major touch up needed.... until I counted the stripes and realized I was one short of what Dave says you need, 32 instead of 33 :-[ So I guess I will wait a day or two and strip this and re-paint :'(

" You know- that one heavily retouched photo is ( so far) about all we have to go on, and the more you fiddle with that picture and draw a gazillion lines on it, the more you realize that there's no 100% perfect information to be tortured out of it. Better men than I have tried plotting these stripes, but in my own several attempts I came up with anything from 32 to 34 stripes. IF you're happy with how your stripes look- I'd just say go with them!"

In addition I checked Greg van Wyngardens Drawing in Fokker DVII Aces book and he has 32 stripes although he leads off with white on the right wing tip and of course did the stripes black 8)

I will ponder this for a day or two :o

So the Mechanics worked overnight and painted the stripes on the Undersurface of the upper wing. There were 2 choices here:
1. Do like Kirschtein's DR1 and reverse the stripes.
2. Do like Kirschtein"s DVII and keep them the same direction.
I chose option 2. why? Because I liked it ::) So just a tad of touch up and I will move on to the interior.

I have covered all but the bottom of the seat with Aviattic Linen decals. I will most likely do the bottom in ply.

Thanks Stephen I greatly appreciate your kind comments! A funny thing here. I had placed a bezel on the compass to see how it would look...NO GLUE! I forgot all about it, took the photos, handled it for hours, and it was still there today when I started working on the engine bay frames! So I took it off, painted it silver, then placed it on my desk. Next time I looked for it it was gone. Went to the carpet and actually found it!! So now it is glued in place ::)

Thanks Amigos! I am moving relatively quickly on this one. The engine is complete except for a bit of work to do on the plug wires. Fuselage is joined and the upper decking glued in place.

I had to trim all of the crosses from other WNW DVII kits. The chevron was made using stripes from a WNW Albatros sheet cut to shape. The triangular front of the chevron was made from a triangle included on a Pheon Dolphin sheet. Lo and DU Doch Nicht are supplied on the WNW Fokker DVII F decal sheet.

Moving on to the fin and rudder I asked Myself this question, If Ernst had just had the ENTIRE fuselage and empennage painted red why not the fin to match? Most, if not all Artists and Modelers go with a white fin and rudder per OAW practice. In addition some OAW DVII's had CDL fins and rudders. The question is am I pushing too far by painting the fin red and rudder CDL or white? The photo shows CDL rudder and red fin. Let Me know your thoughts...please!

On page 17 in Anthology 2 is a (grey) drawing, and here rudder and fin seems to have the same color as the stripe (you showed it on page 2 of this thread).
But nobody can prove it or the opposite, so feel free to paint a nice Fokker.

This is the nice thing about WWI models: there is some freedom, so not all models looks the same and all builders are right 8)

I will continue to add some weathering but feel like this one is finally in the Home Stretch! The fin and rudder are just resting in place as I am still considering the colors!

Thanks Gaz! As for the strength of the wing structure I feel it is quite strong. As long as the cabane tripod and rear cabanes are seated correctly everything stays in place with no movement. Like most WNW kits the gear is a bit wobbly ;D

PS: I still wouldn't recommend handling it by the upper wing, but then again I don't do that with any of My fully rigged biplanes 8)

And you manage it to finish it in time 8) Groupbuilds starts often with great interest, but many participants do not finish their projects in time.

Thanks Frank your comments are appreciated. I have said this before but I Love being retired. Managed to finish two for the GB, this one and the Nieuport Probably could have done another if I pushed things 8)
