Title: COMPLETED: The B von.
Post by: krow113 on February 02, 2019, 10:59:15 AM
Thanks to admins for this opportunity and a great tribute.
I look forward to an incredible show of modelling skills.

 One of the most iconic characters from The Great War;
 The Red Baron.
 Excellent kit to start with:
(https://i.ibb.co/n3JyPYY/IMG-5148.jpg) (https://ibb.co/SQCgfMM)
(https://i.ibb.co/BTks1VC/IMG-5150.jpg) (https://ibb.co/SVSvLX3)
(https://i.ibb.co/wzCXkBS/IMG-5152.jpg) (https://ibb.co/6WbxMrH)
I will render him as shown on the model box with the officer cap and not the flying helmet.

A more than respectable figure to reflect the admiration we all felt for Mr. Delatorre.

And screaming into the kit I ran into a few issues , not too bad 2 hours work took care of them.
The first is the fit of the feet into the 'pitchers mound' base , dumping the base took care of that:
(https://i.ibb.co/X4bjvHz/IMG-5258.jpg) (https://ibb.co/PYNFfk5)

So the opportunity to use some of the coolest , classiest , wood I have in stock . some blonde spalted , birdseye , crazy-leopard maple arose:
(https://i.ibb.co/x6QRMMd/IMG-5263.jpg) (https://ibb.co/rHJ1ZZN)
(https://i.ibb.co/NYy3XVv/IMG-5262.jpg) (https://ibb.co/s3VPhmf)
Resin base only for fitting, and maple  base still in rough cut shape. I'll also be able to burn in some inscriptions into the maple  base with my laser.

The last 2 issues were with the figs arms and hands. The right hand is holding gloves and a significant amount of removal was needed to get the hand up into the sleeve. No worry as there is plenty of resin to cut away.
The left hand was a little more difficult to deal with , it was really just a blob! This was a little more difficult to deal with until I realised there was more than enough resin to carve away and make the detail of the knuckles and the back of the hand. I also had to carve the main torso piece to accept the knuckle detail , so a little tough!
Arms on:
(https://i.ibb.co/HTj843H/IMG-5264.jpg) (https://ibb.co/GQqSpN5)
All the hand and garment detail had to be added:
(https://i.ibb.co/YjpjgBS/IMG-5266.jpg) (https://ibb.co/8868kgw)
I was hoping to keep the a/m down on this but I do have some 120mm p/e medals that might be more realistic than the resin renderings . Not that they NEED  to be replaced...
I like to get to this stage as soon as possible. I call it the milliput stage , 90 % glued and pinned  together and ready to fill . There are some tiny voids to fill and the joints will get some more work:
(https://i.ibb.co/PCq53tC/IMG-5269.jpg) (https://ibb.co/YjHtYbj)
Head and hand not glued. I used the base to posion the legas , so next will be the cutting off of the foot flanges and getting him pinned for painting.

Pure class:
(https://i.ibb.co/f0XjD2c/IMG-5282.jpg) (https://ibb.co/GPdzH0h)
Head plopped on and boots deflanged.
A/M p/e is out too , no WW! medals all WW2.

Awesome start and assembly positioning of the figure on the base. I am looking forward to your further progress. I stared this one years ago and have been stalled . Perhaps yours will inspire me to finish mine  ::)

Thanks RIII!
I bet you stalled when you saw the left hand!
Looks like the GB is heating up nicely , good luck and happy building to all who participate!
I worked on The Baron for 3 hours last night. Mostly on what is called 'undercutting' a term I learned from actual figure modellers , not a dabbler like me!
This is the practise of using a scribing tool and knife to outline and delineate the mouldings , you cant really see the work as it is subtle but adds up when the fig is into final detailing.
I also piped in the shoulders , I like this look and deals nicely with the seams there:
(https://i.ibb.co/74K48Cq/IMG-5291.jpg) (https://ibb.co/fvHvBFs)
(https://i.ibb.co/mFD4rNb/IMG-5295.jpg) (https://ibb.co/dJWDsmj)
I'm looking forward to rendering the black leather coat and the greenish caste to the uniform.
Next up a little milliput...
Title: Re: The B von.
Post by: krow113 on February 04, 2019, 03:15:08 PM
Some little patches of milliput in place, as well as wholesale replacement of the trouser buttons and the bootlace tie. This was needed , as can been seen in prior pics that the boot lace tie detail was mismatched , the buttons didn't look all the same so …:
(https://i.ibb.co/Mcn6kKW/IMG-5305.jpg) (https://ibb.co/CbB2K4N)
(https://i.ibb.co/J2vkVGC/IMG-5306.jpg) (https://ibb.co/Dk9KhvL)
I think I'll do the button on the jacket this way as well , then I can finish them in the silver easier.

Thank you ,RIII!!!
And setting the bar high is gonna  be the story of a lot of my work, s'ok I'm used to it.

The uniform buttons didn't make the cut , too many diff sizes and shapes , so off they come , I drilled some small holes to mark location but may have gotten carried away! I also accented the material folds a little more as well.
LOL! That's what modelling is sposda be : FUN!
(https://i.ibb.co/rcgbj0p/IMG-5311.jpg) (https://ibb.co/xfymkLg)
Any way I'll have no trouble knowing where the new buttons will go.

Thank you.
Base work today. I sanded all smooth the distressed the wood , adding some bullet holes and a lot of tiny marks , chipped edgea etc. All going to look really nice with the staining and artwork treatments to come:

(https://i.ibb.co/ZBhyjgg/IMG-5362.jpg) (https://ibb.co/VgvX1CC)

There are 2 facias on each elevation , these were kept to minmal distressing as they will be where the laser burnt inscriptions will be.

Hi Steve
You are certainly a master of figurines - something I've never tried but I look on with interest. At the rate you are going you could have a squadron done by the end of six months for the Memorial Build!  ;D

Cheers

Thank you Alistair.
I'm certainly not a master...and my style is to bomb into a kit , solve the most obvious issues and the settle into a steady pace. Figs cant be compared to other models , what with a face to deal with.
I'm waiting for info to come back on questions asked on other forums regarding  the green uniform color.

Thanks Manni!
The kit has been scoured for imperfections and sanded , picked , scribed , massaged and scraped into shape.
Pretty decent as an older resin kit should be , some work but comes up nicely and you need to know that going in.
Here is the state of things as they sit today , base well into being and the kit in white primer -surfacer:
(https://i.ibb.co/JmzNkKD/IMG-5499.jpg) (https://ibb.co/TYHZhk9)

(https://i.ibb.co/2S3447C/IMG-5370.jpg) (https://ibb.co/Lrd77zc)
I'll do both heads, as they can be swapped depending on how I feel , and practise of figure face painting is always good.

Working on the gloves I mixed oils for a nice effect and some idea as to how the leather coat will be done:

Also the boots get another color and wiped off:

And some rot for the hat band:
(https://i.ibb.co/d648yM8/IMG-5745.jpg) (https://ibb.co/y5FHJPH)
Ill work this up as everything else. Not so 'The Blue Max' vermillion , as much as a more believable fabric color.
I'm starting to like the fig , important to the work , and getting more acquainted with its characteristics.

Thank you Borsos and RIII!

As the work flows on figs there is a satisfaction to knowing its going in the right direction. This develops as  you go....Tunic buttons have been sourced in p/e so another little problem solved . Heads are coming along nicely as well. This fig is decently sculpted , the prep work in undercutting is essential , especially in the leather coat/tunic area for a clean definition.
So some careful painting leathering up the coat:
(https://i.ibb.co/x77wXP6/IMG-5776.jpg) (https://ibb.co/Jss8m0H)
The last bit of research will be regarding the shoulder epaulettes , I have no info as to how they should look , another forum supplied answers on the tunic so I'll try there.

I browsed through the Aerodrome discussion.
If I may add my knowledge to the „Feldgrau“ issue: Forget all these „Feldgrau is exactly this or that shade“ hints. Thats pure nonsense.
The Bavarian Army Museum in Ingolstadt has one of the largest collections of original German WWI uniforms in the world. They also have sealed examples of uniform patterns that were issued to the uniform factories which are especially interesting as they were never exposed to any wear and tear but sealed in the magazine for 100 years. I spend countless hours in this museum and browsing their publications respectively. The most important thing I learned: No uniform equals another, almost all uniforms differ in shade. They range from a true light grey without much, if any, green, to a greenish grey. The same is true with the field grey or stone grey trousers. Every German WWI uniform I have seen was much less green than the German WWII uniform, doesnt matter if M1907, M1910 or Feldbluse M15 is mentioned. Many accounts of frontline soldiers tell how much the uniforms faded and that old „Frontschweine“ could be determined from the young, unexperienced Ersatz by their almost earth brown faded uniforms. Richthofen of course was no trench soldier, but especially officers frequently had their uniforms made by private tailor‘s shops, they used whatever grey fabric they had on hand.
Yes, there were some differences regarding certain grey or green shades, Jägers had „forstgrüne“ (Forest green) uniforms, which had in fact a much more green shade (not Bavarian Jägers by the way, they wore Field grey uniforms). But besides of that every shade between green grey and light grey is fine for German WWI uniforms, I personally find most premixed purchaseable „feldgau“ colors too dark and too green. Bearing the scale effect in mind, the colors labeled „RLM02“ (I know, a WW2 shade... :) ) fit WWI field grey quite well.

Andreas; Thanks very much for your input regarding the uniform color discussion.
I may as well asked about PC 10!
Your input goes into the work here and the discussion on The Aerodrome forum , where there is a lot of info.
My take on The Baron and his attire would be tempered with the knowledge of status and privilege of the time in history we are discussing.

 " Off the rack"???!!
Mein Gott you must be kidding!

There is no way an aristcrat of The Barons standing would have anything other than custom tailored garments and especially uniforms. I think this is part of the reason there is so much difference and discussion of this nature. Bearing that in mind and working with the examples given in the ongoing discussion , now here , as well as the Aerodrome I came up with a procedure and coloring that I'm happy with so far. The model is only half done and there will be fine adjustments to the final uniform color.

My respect for Mr Delatorre , and his modelling and the forum he created is unquestionable , and someone lurking on a forum looking for ways to be offended will never abridge that or be able to effectively stain or disprove that respect.

Having said that , the research and effort here is meant to be worthy of the stated respect , and hopefully come as near as possible to the level of creation Mr. Delatorre reached.

RIII - Thank you .

...and looking to the finish , I'll try to get  a little done each day.
We are into the minute details now. The red piping , the medals...
Starting with the piping I laid on some thin lines of a greenish grey enamel. This has created a path for the red and a backing for the color.
I also laid in some green filter, barely discernable , the only way I could tell was to reflect light off the wet application. This will be built up to suit.
The boots got some work as well with a few diff treatments:

A lovely rainy day here , perfect for modelling , gonna drag The Baron out and assess the work.

Pics to follow.....

 Attention to detail dictates...
Lenses for the goggles on the alt head. Tracing paper pressed to the head for an impression begins the work:

Thanks RIII
The piping needs more work to tone it into a not so bright red.
The Baron now fits his base a lot better:

Terri , thank you  and here are the components of the groundwork:

 Base remasked and snow applied:

The B.von replaced:
(https://i.ibb.co/b28qDYq/IMG-5855.jpg) (https://ibb.co/WPYqj7q)

'Wet Snow' needs to be pressed down and I imagine it will 'melt' a little as the PVA glue drys , the slight yellowish tinge should dissipate as that happens too.

Thanks Terri & RIII !
I  didn't like the yellow snow , F.Z. warned us about that , the result of using yellow PVA
.
Substituting white PVA took care of that:

(https://i.ibb.co/F4GqXqH/IMG-5857.jpg) (https://ibb.co/KxCzDzK)

The Baron is placed again and I'm tired of taking him off and on so I pressed him right home on the base.
I think the white is a 'cool' transition from base to fig.
Couldn't resist plonking his head on:

p90 & RIII ;
Thank you!

I would estimate at 75% completed. I have a list and working on it crossing off the details as they get done and adding more to the list as needed.
Last night the red used on the hat was toned down and outlining begun. The red is ok , but I think it may be the wrong color , I'll leave it as it looks ok:
(https://i.ibb.co/3fMYSCY/IMG-5872.jpg) (https://ibb.co/HNxpGHp)
I just spent an hour or so on drybrushing, bringing out the details and making the fig come alive.
Thanks for lookin'!

Continuing on as a daily routine...
Epaulettes were rendered according to interpretation of pics on The Aerodrome thread.
 A grey-silver mix with gold drybrushed Uhlan 'A' :

Wet snow gets sloppier with wicked in gloss clear:

And the boot laces come up nicely with drybrushing as well:

Some remarkable detailing, for sure, displaying extraordinary painting skill.

p90 , Gene Thank you .

No update as this is my busiest time of year. Very little to go anyway I'll prolly dash it all off in a day or so....

The appearance of a 'giant head' is due to the photography , the final pics will show this is not so.
Stay tuned...

RIII Thank you.

 Working on it.
A pinstripe mix of the rot made up to ensure flow down the modified , procured in Stratford-on-Avon , sable liner proves worthy . Painstasking but a hugely required detail.
The uniform red piping:
(https://i.ibb.co/r3KJn65/IMG-5928.jpg) (https://ibb.co/XDfTmsF)

I did the red dots on the cap as well. I noticed the 'dots' are a little too big , looking at photos of the cap. In hindsite I would prolly buck those off and use some p/e . Here are the buttons in final colors and the stupid red dots :
(https://i.ibb.co/wykK4sR/IMG-5930.jpg) (https://ibb.co/b10rXJP)
I flooded them with rot tryna get the dot painted. The ref pics show the red as a back elevation with the chrome outer ring prominant . I'll fix this mess up after the red dries.
The buttons look ok though...
The base gets its final details as well:

I make no claims as any kind of figure painter other than a being real optimistic.

He is an accomplishment for sure and accents the stellar work done in the group build.
Not too much figgy work here ( the name of the forum may have something to do with that ) . But getting into an aircraft kit would begin the laborious and complicated build 'strategy' I do my work by and no way I would have gotten it done in time.
