Des passing one year ago was a sore blow to us all, also to me personally as I valued His personality, kindness, generosity and contribution to WW1 modelling very much. I still look around, watch old threads with his participation and cannot believe He is no longer here with us. And that it is already one year gone since He passed. That is why I welcome this superb idea to commemorate Des by means of this GB.
When the famed warehouse damage discount was announced by WNW some time ago I took my chance and bought two kits. Rumpler is long completed but AEG I bought as well was not so appealing to me at the beginning. But now, when this GB was announced I thought, that it would be right time to take my chance with that kit.
And here it is, my entry to the Des Memory GB - WNW AEG G.IV Late which I plan to build as the White 2 from Bogohl 8b, the aircraft photographed after it suffered slight damage during Allied air raid.
It will be built with half-exposed engines, for which I bought Taurus Models detailing sets. Otherwise, besides obligatory rigging with Gaspatch turnbuckles and maybe some tiny scratch details in the cockpit, the bits from the huge box filled to the rim will have to suffice.
So let it begin. To You, Des. I will do my best to build it to a standard fine enough to be a worthy tribute to your memory... :'(

Great choice! I'm contemplating doing my AEG for the Group Build as well. No firm decision quite yet though.

Hi Prze
It's great that you are here in this build. Your model making skills are those that I aspire to. The AEG is the one twin engine plane that I might do one day. I really look forward to seeing your progress.
Cheers

Terrific choice Prze, and a Kit very worthy of your talents. It's a long and at times challenging Build but one I enjoyed. I'm looking forward to following along on your project very much!

Terrific choice. I am looking forward to seeing your usual superb skills bring this one to life!

Thank you, all for your welcome and your faith in my skills. Well, I will try to give the kit its justice.
The work has begun. Interior bits and main airframe components cut from sprues, partly cleaned, test-fit, central sections put together, and awaiting seam cleaning, degreasing and airbrushing. Actually I have already tested my choice for interior grey-green (Vallejo Pastel Green) on the fuselage interior, barely seen in one of the photos.

A great start, Przemo. I am glad that you started this project, I hope that I will have the best possible guide when it's time for my AEG. Of course I will be follow the progress even though I'm pretty sure about the fantastic end result.

Great to see, that you have started this big plane. I'm looking forward to see the progress. I think it will be great and a lot to learn from your skills!

You are making quick progress! The washes really bring out the details.

Remembering the very interesting and appealing but longish work on the interior of Felixstowe I somehow expected the same in this second largest WNW kit. But in the matter of fact the assembly of interior was much, much quicker here. Two, three evenings and the usually well fitting WNW "Lego bricks" fell together and the innards are now ready for closing.
The only added bits from beyond the box are rigging lines in the open sections of rear fuselage, three bomb release toggles with their linkages in the panel in the commandor's front cabin and barely visible elevator control cables.

PS. I deliberately ignored removal of ejector marks in the interior, which will be hardly visible after closing - that window is not very much transparent and distorts the light passing through it...

Superb work, Przemo. It is allways fun to follow your builds.

A truly great project and wonderful tribute to Des, Przemo! Yes, we wish Des could see all these builds, but he would be proud and pleased to see his influence on us was so profound... And this stunning model is taking shape very quickly and beautifully... I admire your skill and attention to detail ... a work of art!
Well done!

The big fish has its body assembled. The many joints, however, will require some special treatment. The centre-section is only put to give the taste.

Wow! And Wow! Great progress and stunning work, Przemo! Regards, Marc.

Thank you, everyone, for all kind comments.
Recent days were devoted to very unspectacular but important work - filling and sanding of the numerous joints in the fuselage. Basically all of them required some treatment: transverse ones between cockpit openings, gaps around the hatch cover behind the pilot, spine joint, the ones on the nose around the front opening and along the halves seam, four at the bottom in the zone of the rear bomb slots... It seems all is fine now but the truth will come alight when the fuselage gets the gloss black paint as the base for the night losenge decals...

I have also cut all the struts for the centre sections to check if they fit nicely into their slots - no problems here and the time truly comes for the airbrush... And the decals, of which I am quite afraid... I do not like covering the entire model with them, especially doubly-curved surfaces on the fuselage. This part of the build will soon show if I will be happy with this model at all
-
All over decals and lots of seams.... stuff of my nightmares!
Looks good though Prze,
Guy
-
It looks like you have them well under control.
Ryan
-
Your usual excellence my friend! I am sure you will make all of the decal covered areas look Awesome...I have faith in your skills!!
RAGIII
-
Three weeks of priming and decalling...
And the final result still requires some retouching - I plan to varnish, polish, seal with black-green tint and hopefully the traces of my struggle with doubly-curved and strongly detailed surfaces will be hidden, at least in part.

That is a lot of decalling ! Looking really great so far . How were the decals to apply on the nose area ?
Terri
-
Looks great to me. your polishing and tint sounds like it should solve the very minor issues 8)
RAGIII
-
Thanks, Terri and Rick.
The decals on the nose were in three pieces - sides and bottom, interlocked along the borders of polygons. However, when put together they left six empty places which had to be filled with custom cut polygons. WNW does provide spare decals with three out of four colours (besides some bits of preprinted night losenge for linen covered areas) for the nose painted camo. Why three, not all four, with a missing colour which would fit the empty spots best, remains a mystery. Anyway, I have filled those and probably everything will be quite obscured with overpaint...

awesome, looks like the most labor-intensive stage behind you,

The main elements are now black-green tinted, decalled with individual and national markings, varnished and awaiting the further work (continuous removal of dust and some wash around the cockpit coaming. First my apologies Prez for not commenting before - somehow I have missed this.
I have just spent a very enjoyyable read through your thread - and am blown away by the sheer amount of detail that you have put into the cocpit and interior generally. The instrument panel looks real! The hexagon markings and individual aircraft markings are also impressive and a tribute to your master modeller skills. This will be another of your superb models when it is finished.
Stephen.

What a big unusual bird, eating up a huge amount of decals :o
Great work!
Do you have a hangar in your flat for the finished model?

Thank you, everyone, for watching and leaving kind comments.
Frank, I do not own a hangar, unfortunately. But I still have some space in my display cabinet. This biggie will take the last but one empty shelf. And the last one will be for the just ordered Gotha G.I... Then I will have to invent some way to accomodate further models...
But for now, some more work on AEG. The tail completed, undercarriage attached awaiting wash at the springs, some dirt, rigging and mounting of the wheels (they are just put on to check the alignment). Struts airbrushed. The rigging stations including Gaspatch turnbuckles, mounted to the wings and the struts, all passed the pull-out test. Ailerons armed with turnbuckles for control lines - mounted to the wings. Going on, slowly but always forward.

And now the last item to attach on the underside will be the ordnance. My family voted for the layout with 7 50kg bombs and that fancy rack with 8 12.5kg bombs under the very nose. So the work has started on them
(https://i.ibb.co/DGSNSXV/aeg-88.jpg)
When it is done and there is no need to put the model upside down anymore, the work will start on Mercedes D.IV engines.

I have already said that, Dan, some posts ago, answering to Bughunter's question if I had a hangar ;)
G.I is preordered! And it will be built!

The lower engine nacelles with their struts and rigging done.
And work on the engines themselves begun. I started with filling the open backs of oil tanks, which, I feel may just be visible when mounted. The engine crankcases and cylinder blocks assembled and seams cleaned. All the resin goodies from Taurus Models unpacked and ready for fun.

Some progress.
The Mercedes D.IV engines. I had severe problems with positioning the valve springs when building my Rumpler C.IV some time ago. Then I discussed the issue with Łukasz from Taurus and he explained me his idea how to facilitate the problem. Indeed he devised it cleverly -there are longer bolts which should jump into the slots in cylinder blocks. So it is where I started
(https://i.ibb.co/YkthhRK/aeg102.jpg)
Now positioning of springs should be really easy!

And here is a slightly amended anemometer.
And the upper fragments of the "cages" for the engines, cut from the kit halves-parts and assembled.
To be continued...
-
Great stuff!
Regarding the camshaft work , feel free to peruse The Gotha thread (page 3 & 7 ) I figure out the valvetrain.
Watch out that you have the camshaft the right way round front to back, it is slightly different and will result in misalignment of the rocker arms and the springs. I installed mine backwards at first.
-
Thank you, Steve. I will see what you did.
And you are absolutely right, there are slight differences with front and rear of the cam shaft. I daresay I arranged mine in the correct way. ;)
-
I really like your home made engine stand ;) Nice progress so far :)
Terri
-
Continuing to be an awesome build as always. Your start on the engines look excellent!
RAGIII
-
A thing of beauty! Just loving this build.
Dan
-
Thank you!
Some more fun on the camshafts. The positioning bolts fixed, holes in the cylinder banks drilled for them. I copied what Krow did in his Gotha and prepared templates for valve springs positions. This eased the drilling very much, it was much easier to trace the locations on a paper piece than on the plastic part! The dry-fit assembly shows signs of fine alignnment, at least much better then I achieved in Rumpler engine...

Przemo,
indeed, the right motivation is invaluable, and the museum at Colindale / Hendon is one of the better places to do it, same as great source of info
well-made propellers draw attention just as much as the wide fields of dark lozenge...

Thank you all for continuous support.
Recent results:
i) engines dirtied, armed with some piping (the intake manifolds are only temporarily attached, yet)
ii) radiators with some wash ready for mounting
iii) propellers completed, ready for assembly
Now it is the turn of electric cables. Magnetos are ready, the bunches of cables to pop out of them are prepared for airbrushing just like not photographed pieces of wire which will then be cut into sections to lead the electricity from the ducts to the spark plugs not yet attached. Closer and closer!

What paint and wash did you use on the propeller hubs? It looks so perfect.
The paint is the mix of Vallejo metallic acrylics - Dark Aluminium and Aluminium
And the wash is ordinary brown water-based school paint, sealed with acrylic clear gloss coat.
I am glad you like it - very simple and totally controllable - easy to remove if overdone :)

It's certainly looking sufficiently busy. Lots of detail to study.
It truly is. I have seen a few of these beasts completed at some modeling competition tables. I was always spending some time to try to analyze the intricacy of the structure. Now I am repeating it on my own model. Great that WNW lead one step by step through the assembly process. ;)

Your Masterpiece is really taking shape now. Looks Fantastic!

The final steps of this build went surprisingly quickly and smoothly. The struts, the upper wing panels, rigging, attaching of guns, propellers and anemometer took mere two days. So my contribution to this GB is finished.
To you Des! I hope you see it from Up-There and that you take my meagre efforts as decent enough.
Well, one thing is certain - I totally lost my battle against the everpresent dust - the delicate make-up brush only slides it from one place to another. Blowing on the model does not help, either. I am very sorry for this.

Oh my Prez: never mind the dust, just admire the modelling skill that has produced this masterpiece. A super build log and a wonderful finished model. Des would be very pleased to see that.
Stephen.

Nicely done!
-
Beautifully done Prez, another one of your beauties completed.
-
Another beauty, Prez!
Des, would be proud ;)

Outstanding! You are a master builder.
A great tribute to Des' legacy.
Cheers

Wonderful build!

Well, well, well - real masterpiece! I am always charmed when AEG is being shown somewhere. Last one I do remember was Szczypka's one but in diff camo. I prefer this one

Another astounding build, Prezmol.
I suspect the dust is statically charged and so clings to the surface. You might try blowing it off carefully using 'canned air' used for cleaning computers and electronic components. I believe it has anti-static ingredients that kill the static charges. Just a thought.
-
Przemol I wish I had three heads to tribute you a "triple chapeau" as you deserve!!!
The black background works greatly to let us appreciate the effectiveness of the night camouflage...
-
Thank you all for your overly kind welcome to this model.
And special thanks to Porsche911 for the hint on canned air. I was not aware it may contain some anti-electric ingredient. I may try it.

I have seen that model in real. And it is better than mine, I assure you. 😉

This is truly a magnificent model, Przemo! I'm overwhelmed by the beauty of this work of art. Another of you masterpieces.
Cheers,
Bud

As above Prze,
A masterclass in the production of an amazing model.

All superlatives are already said, I think. I am late in commenting this. :)Never mind, it’s a real beauty and I agree with all the compliments above.
Andreas

Bud, Guy and Andreas - you are real gentlemen... But I do thank you for your kind comments ;)
-
Holy Man! Late to the party but oh, my Lord...just lovely.
Des is definitely smiling!
Dan

That is absolutely BEAUTIFUL, my friend.

Absolute stunning, Przemo! This dark bird is a great tribute to Des.
Congratulations.
Bye,

Thank you, Dan, James and Manni. Very much appreciated comments!
-
As always spectacular! You always make it look easy. And so productive as well.. Are you running out of display space? Cheers Matt
-
Thank you, Matt. And yes, unfortunately I am running out of display space. But there are some old WW2 a/c models which will have to be moved - within some months I am afraid.
-
I have to echo the previous comments Prze - this is quite an amazing build. The quality of your work, as always, is outstanding. I'll certainly be referring to this when I attempt to put mine together.
Cheers,
Gary

I totally lost my battle against the everpresent dust - the delicate make-up brush only slides it from one place to another. Blowing on the model does not help, either. I am very sorry for this.
First let me congratulate you with an excellent model! I recognize the dust issue. Brushing and blowing doesn't really help although it does help you to remove the dust on heavily dusted models.
But I use cyberclean to remove the last dust particles. I also use it in my car for cleaning the dashboard in all its impossible folds and corners. I don't know if it is still for sale, but it is really amazing stuff:

I use the original yellow stuff and I prefer a jar of it. Then it stays in best shape.

Ivo
