Title: 1/48 Caudron G-4, Paris-Melbourne 1919, conversion kit Meliusmanu
Post by: huberlu on January 15, 2019, 08:13:37 AM
100 years ago, October 14, 1919, Etienne Poulet and his mechanic Jean Benoist left Paris to try to reach Melbourne in Australia.
A raid of more than 20,000 km aboard a modified Caudron G4.

The G4 dubbed "the fly" ready for departure.

Etienne Poulet (left) and Jean Benoist, "The young Benoist carrying the road maps"

It was Kajetan Schulz  who was interested in this raid and offered me with Xan to join me in this project. I thank them for it.

Kajetan Schulz is a Polish craftsman who designs decal projects for Copper State Models (Ni.17 for example) as well as for the private maquetists. It produces all resin parts for CSM

The resin parts of the conversion kit will have enough space to decorate the interior of the cabin, new propellers, water bottles and decals.

His site:

https://meliusmanu.pl/ (https://meliusmanu.pl/)

There are not so many companies interested in our story, I think Kajetan deserves support in this brave initiative.

Some images of the aircraft are well known but many hours of research were needed to decipher the inscriptions that cover the cockpit, engine nacelles, tanks and drifts. All information comes from the press of the 20s, photos found on the internet and the museum Caudron (City Street).

The plane belonged to Etienne Poulet. It has been refurbished (doc. Air life illustrated p 683) by the company Caudron.
It has been modified to be able to fly for 12 hours without refueling at a maximum speed of 105km / h.
http://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k6553380s/f41.item.r=Poulet.zoom (http://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k6553380s/f41.item.r=Poulet.zoom)

Two additional tanks were installed between the wings (500 liters of petrol instead of 150 liters of petrol and 35 liters of oil in the standard version).
Both tanks were offered by Caudron (Le Matin 13/12/19).
It is planned to make castor oil in the course of the trip ...

Despite Etienne Poulet's requests, no help has been given by France. The project is therefore carried out at its own expense (60,000 francs at the time) with the support of industrialist Paul Plouvier and journalist Jean Lhermit. The supplies will be supplied in part by Great Britain in its colonies, Mesopotamia, India, Siam (Thailand).
With reluctance Etienne Poulet agrees to cover his plane with advertisements for the engine manufacturer Gnome and Rhone as well as for the brand varnish that covers the canvas of the aircraft. The two tanks also carry inscriptions as well as the upper wing.

Etienne Poulet and Jean Benoist bring in more fuel spare parts, two propellers fixed under the plane, a wheel in the cockpit (photo), a rifle (photo), a pistol, a can of 5 liters of water and food for a week.

Thirty meters of cards in rolls are stored behind the driver.

The station of TSF is abandoned in favor of pigeons travelers much less heavy. Jean Benoist is thus seated between two crates during all the flight (the uncompromising 02/02/20).
They carry in all 750 kg of material.

This photo was taken in the Caudron Museum of the city of Rue (very small but very nice and that costs only 2 €).
You can also access the Caudron archives by making an appointment.

Hello,

While waiting for the conversion kit to be delivered by the postman I started the engines.

They are very beautiful and only require a little sanding along the molding joint.

Note the valves springs and tumblers arms.

It will be necessary to add in the back the threads of the candles and in the front the rods of tumblers.
The engine was painted in black, Alclad metal and drybrushed with steel color oil paint. We must still give a patina to the whole

The exhaust pipes are drilled and the edges of the hoods a little refined.

Still no package in the mailbox.

I continue my engines.

They were covered with matte varnish and then patinated with a motor-grease and medium-gray colored juice.
The collectors are painted in Alclad copper, much too pink for my taste.
So I covered them with several layers of brown ink diluted with water until the desired color. In the photo only one has been treated with ink. They are covered with gloss varnish.

A small plate is glued to the top of each cylinder to stick on the rod of the rockers.

It remains to fix the threads of the candles.

I thought for a moment to replace them with these:

https://www.smallstuffmodels.com/p/products.html#!/1-48-Le-Rhone-9C-80-hp-Engine/p/50458532/category=13154092 (https://www.smallstuffmodels.com/p/products.html#!/1-48-Le-Rhone-9C-80-hp-Engine/p/50458532/category=13154092)

Has anyone ever used them?
They look "nice".

A bit of history while waiting for the resin parts ...

Born in 1890, in Lommes, in the North of France, Etienne Poulet obtains his military certificate (n ° 257) in 1912, at 22 years old. In 1919 Etienne Poulet is already a known pilot who is not his first feat. He is one of the first pilots to fly upside down.
He won the record of nonstop flight time held by German Ingoldi on April 16, 1914 (more than 16h 29min 30s).
https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k6585086p/f3.image.r=Poulet%20Etienne%20Record%201914?rk=128756;0 (https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k6585086p/f3.image.r=Poulet%20Etienne%20Record%201914?rk=128756;0)

He can then participate in major aviation meetings alongside Roland Garros, Himelman and Chanpteloup just before the start of hostilities.

Instructor at the 1st squadron Caudron de Douai, he amuses himself to scare the swimmers on a beach of Berck. One of them, lying on a handcart, does not react to his dive full throttle. Poulet finally gets tired and returns. Three days later, his heroic intervention is recorded in the press: "The coolness of an aviator who did not hesitate to go down to the sands to warn the inhabitants saved the life of a paralytic who He was bogged down with his car without anyone thinking of helping him. "
He was incorporated at the beginning of the war into a reconnaissance squadron and then became a test pilot at Caudron for whom he tried 5400 aircraft of 12 kinds.

We find again its trace in the local press in 1916.

On September 12 he landed on Luc's beach where his family was on vacation. He comes to greet his father, or maybe his wife and his mother-in-law ... He comes back a second time on the 24th.

It's confirmed, ... I'm weak.

I bought two "Smallstuffmodels" engines for my plane.

They are like on the pictures of their site.

There are three tiny pieces per cylinder to stick (Spark plug, rockers, and rocker arm support):

There is no trace of molding, so nothing to trim.
All the parts are put in place without difficulties, it is just necessary to remove them from their support. You do not even need a blade for the smaller ones.

I decided to fine-tune the trailing edge of the upper wing by scratching the intrados on the scalpel blade.

October 1919 'Étienne Poulet and Jean Benoist try their plane in front of Gaumont and Pathé's camera:
The aircraft is not yet equipped with replacement propellers, engine nacelle advertisements or the name Chicken on the upper wing.

Thank you!

The intake manifold is painted in copper alclad. Two types of tubules are available. Those on the left are covered with a little brown ink so that they are less pink ...

All parts are glued.

The rocker rods attach themselves to the top of the cylinders by "clipping" them into a tiny U-shaped piece (like the real engine). It must still stick but the accuracy is formidable.

Everything is small but everything is very well designed and everything is easily fixed without sanding or adjustment.

To try absolutely

The idea of the Paris Australia raid goes to Jules Vedrine, Etienne Poulet's "comrade", who asked him to accompany him.
At the accidental death of Jules Vedrine (April 1919) he took over the project on his own and prepared the itinerary. He will take with him the mechanic Jean Benoist who accompanies him for several years and who was already present in 1914 during his record flight of 16h30min.
The raid is undertaken to benefit the widows of Jules Vedrine and his five children.

The plane he will use will be a Caudron G-4 bought by him and modified for the occasion. It "takes off quickly, lands slowly and has all the security guarantees." The plane is slow and not very powerful but E. Poulet knows it very well.

He gets no support from the French army or "administration". On the other hand, "Poulet received from the English government the insurance
that all the aerodromes of Mesopotamia, India and Siam would grant him all their assistance and provide him with all the necessary fuel.
He gets the help of the industrialist Paul Plouvier, and Jean Lhermit (journalist) both friends of Vedrine. Mr. Plouvier will be the guardian of the five orphaned children ( Le Figaro, No. 32, February 1, 1924, p.1).

In the l' Ouest Eclair of July 28, 1919 No. 7259, his arrival at St Malo is announced on the 01 and 02 August. He will give baptisms of the air for the benefit of the widow and children of Jules Vedrine.

Hello!

I started to paint the interior of the cabin. The ejection pellets are to be removed conscientiously because they are very visible. I partially removed the support of the radio right side.
Étienne Poulet had abandoned  TSF too heavy in favor of pigeons.

The frames will be clearer.

The plane carried, among other things, crates, a rifle (visible in the photo), pigeons, 5litres of water, some food and a spare wheel:

I thought the wheel was stowed as in the picture. So I remove the support of the passenger seat thinking that by remaking finer plastic it could return without exceeding the cockpit. Alas ... she still exceeds that much. I should have measured better before cutting.

The wheel must be stored in the cockpit but elsewhere ...

So I redid the support by modifying it a bit so that it looks a little more like the one visible at the Smithsonian.

In the two ramps on each side of the passenger seat there are pilot control rods passing. Difficult to delete them.

The passenger chair in photoetched. Hard enough to get in shape and stick properly.

Thank you!

As I am stuck, I think about a diorama. I will definitely want to put J. Benoist's little boy there.

Maybe the three characters (and maybe the photographer who already exists at 1/48):

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/33874788748_9859e49bcc_b.jpg [/ img]Or simpler, like the father who shows the flags to his son on the plane.[img]https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/33874791248_1e03ed6c72_b.jpg)

I started a figurine, just the head.

It's not alike but I will not get to better I think. I have him aged a lot ...

Hello Terry;

I scratched it with a very fine airbrush needle. Very small scratches. The spicy aspect is because of the mastic balls that made it. Not sure that she is resistant to cooking or painting.

Are the resin colored parts separate from the gray parts - that is, the figures are made of many parts?

All that is gray has been modeled in one go.Then the body is hardened in the oven.
The resin parts were then modeled on the gray body.

Hello ,

Kajetan passed away a few weeks ago.
He had the idea for this assembly and should have produced the parts and the decals. https://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=10054.0 (https://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=10054.0)
May he rest in peace.

I thus continue this assembly which deserves to be carried out.

E.Poulet took over Jules Vedrines' project on his own and prepared the itinerary. The flight is designed as a reconnaissance flight of the stages to be followed in order to open a regular line to Asia and Australia and to promote French aviation. He will take with him the mechanic Jean Benoist (former mechanic of Gilbert) who has accompanied him for several years and who was already present in 1914 during his record flight. The raid is undertaken for the benefit of the widow of Jules Vedrines and her five children.
The plane he will use will be a twin-engine Caudron G-4 registered C.4251 bought by him (60,000 francs) and modified for the occasion "(...) and which Mr. Caudron was kind enough to refurbish him" (doc.la vie Aérienne p 683). It's a plane Poulet knows very well. "It takes off quickly, lands slowly and has all the guarantees of safety."
It was his friend Jules Védrine “the glorious and regretted comrade” who came up with the idea of the Paris Melbourne raid. His death on April 21, 1919 prevented him from carrying out this project.

PARIS, France, September 30, 1919. Mr. Henry J. Smith (Sea Land and Air vol II N°21) interviews Poulet:

Mr. Henry J. Smith, who heads his story : '' Poulet to Fly to Australia Pays Own Way,'' describes the interview
in the following breez style, to which, one offers due homage.
PARIS, France, September 30.

After a long reflection I decided to enter the 21st century...
I started drawing the missing parts to have them printed. Before that, I had to learn the software a bit (Freecad), which doesn't happen in 3 days.

I show you the pictures. I need to have your opinion and an external and critical eye on the shapes and position of the appendages.

To be "light" the tanks will be hollow.

I'm only pretty sure of the length of the middle part which I think (hope) matches the gap between the masts that go through the engine nacelle.

I don't have many photos of the details and obviously not photos from the right angles.

The front part seems short to me...

For the caps I took the diameter of the smaller ones that are on the model and the photos of the originals available on the net. I'm not sure if their diameters are the same. The one in front seems bigger.
The butt joint at the front is "tapered". I thought I saw this on a photo but I can't find it anymore...

I helped put Kajetan's affairs in order after his death.  Among the things that were left, I found these elements. Now that I found your report, I thought these are probably parts of your project that Kajetan managed to do. I also saw decal designs that he started doing for you, but unfortunately they are gone forever. If you are still interested in these items and would like to recover them, please contact me, this is my e-mail address [email protected]

Thanks!

Hello!

That's it!!!

I received my 3D printed parts.

Thanks to Edgar at Copper States Models who kindly printed them.

I did not photograph the most beautiful pieces. I had not seen that there were differences.
Some very small modeled details are not visible (the slits which limit the caps of the tanks for example or the levers which must have broken during the washing of the parts) but it's much better than if I had to do that at the hand.

A spare wheel that will fit in the passenger compartment (I have 7, if someone needs a wheel...).

Four propellers.
They are too thin, I will have to chew to gain thickness. If I can't I will edit the file and buy myself a printer...

Now I have to find time to make models....

See you soon! (https://servimg.com/view/18281613/166)

Hi,

My first version of propellers did not please me. So I modified it to be more "rounded".
And then I bought myself a 3D printer.https://www.anycubic.fr/products/photon-mono-4k  (https://www.anycubic.fr/products/photon-mono-4k)
I am weak.

After many many tries I managed to print complete propellers. I had to sand them down and prepare them with Surfacer to make them acceptable.

On the left the new propeller...
(https://i.servimg.com/u/f44/18/28/16/13/20230710.jpg)[ /url]

I printed boxes to put in the cockpit and the butt of the hunting rifle carried in the cockpit. I rounded it with sandpaper and glued a syringe needle barrel.

(https://i.servimg.com/u/f44/18/28/16/13/20230711.jpg)[ /url]

(https://i.servimg.com/u/f44/18/28/16/13/20230713.jpg)[ /url]

(https://i.servimg.com/u/f44/18/28/16/13/20230712.jpg)[ /url]

Anything with flat surfaces like crates is easy to print. As soon as there are curved surfaces it is another story. We see the lines marked by the different layers of resins and it is necessary to sand and pass the surface.
3D printing requires, I'm afraid, a long experience to obtain perfect parts... (https://servimg.com/view/18281613/171)

The aluminum floor is made of self-adhesive aluminum tape sanded with sandpaper. It can also be wood color. I wanted the boxes to be seen better, but they cover the entire surface of the floor. It is glued to a grid of a faucet "bubbler" and shaped by rolling a brush handle over it. The grid is deformed to obtain diamonds as in the photo of the original. With the naked eye it passes.

The cockpit will receive boxes, a wheel, 5 liters of water and the gun. The wheel does not fit as in the photo unless you cut into the boards on each side of the passenger seat.

750 Kg of material...

The boxes take up a lot of space...probably too much.

Still working on it.

I'm making decals...and it's taking a lot longer than expected.
In vector drawing to be able to modify the size without losing quality. The photo is a scan of the hood and the "Benoist" layered on top (made with free GIMP and Inkscape).

The engine covers must be modified. Their opening is much larger than that of the Kit. I looked for other G4s with similar covers and haven't found any yet.

The one on the left has been modified.

The decals representing the texts are almost all finished.
Flags too.

The Australian flag exists in blue or red. The same goes for the British flag. I'm not sure what color I chose, red.

The actual size of the print is around 8mm high... I thought we would see the flags better.

The advantage of vector is to be able to modify the size of the image at will without pixelation of the image:

If anyone knows a good brand of printable decal (inkjet) I'm interested.

That's it...

A drift complete.
The fonts used are more or less close to reality. You don't see much in the photos, even when reworked a little.
The numbers come from the doc found on the bnf website.

If you see any inconsistencies, I am here to listen to you.

In order to prepare for his departure Étienne Poulet does not remain inactive:

“The Issy-les-Moulineaux airfield yesterday morning. A Caudron evolves in the gray sky. On the ground, three cinematographic operators are filming... The plane lands lightly, rolls a few more meters and comes to stand in front of the operators. From the cabin jumps out, disheveled, a very blond young woman, who, quickly removing her suit, takes a hat and a coat from the trunk of the aircraft, puts them on hastily and walks away towards a hectic car which waits.
It’s Gaby Deslys, who, before leaving for America in a few days, is “filming” the last episodes of a great cinematographic drama that began this summer in Deauville, and which is said to be marvelous. Its pilot, a tall, young, blond boy, has a frank and friendly face, calm and determined, supervises the re-entry of his aircraft under the hangar while speaking with his mechanic (…)”

I also know that certain corners of the Philippines are completely unsanitary, and, on my map, I noted, on the islands Moluccas, a distance of 800km by these words “do not land”. Some navigators have in fact told me that in this region I simply risked being put on the spit...and as this prospect hardly appeals to me...(...)”

Authorizations to fly over British territory are slow to be provided to them. The departure scheduled for October 1 is delayed until October 5. After a test flight the day before departure, the aviators decided to change propellers in favor of those manufactured by Chauvière which showed better performance. The departure is therefore postponed until October 12 at dawn.

On October 12 at seven o'clock in the morning the aircraft had already left its hangar on the Issy les Moulineaux field covered in frost and drowned in mist. The mechanics are busy around the plane. Étienne Poulet and Jean Benoist arrive accompanied by Jean Lhermit, the organizer of the raid. The crowd is present to witness the departure. The press, photographers and cameras are there.

A final check and the engines are started. “The fly” (that’s the name of the plane) takes off, it’s 8:16 a.m.

This is unfortunately only a false start. Half an hour later the Caudron returns to land. The very dense fog makes it impossible to see the ground and navigate.
10:30 a.m. the plane leaves, then returns to land at the airfield again.
At 1:30 p.m. the two men set off a third time but this time a faulty magneto forced them to give up.

October 14 at 7:10 a.m. in good weather this time Poulet and Benoist definitely set off.

“Newyork Tribune” P2, 11/16/19

Jacques Mortane the next day in the Petit Journal:

“Obviously, we don’t go to Australia like we go to Asnières. Although it is sometimes difficult to know, when we leave, what time we will arrive in Asnières! Poulet and his mechanic Benoît tried in vain yesterday to start their flight to Melbourne. They actually succeeded in the first 50 kilometers of the 20,000 km raid, but the mist prevented them from continuing their hike. At 8 o'clock. 05, initial test. Back to 9
hours. Waiting for a clearing. Second attempt at 10 a.m. 30. The always blurred weather poses an insurmountable barrier. Finally, third departure at 12:30. Nothing changed.
“Bad times,” we say to the champion.
- Yes, here, but it's the best season there. Until the end of November, the temperature is ideal in the Antipodes. » Alas! to get there, you have to go through here and “here” does not at all seem to encourage the Frenchman's enterprise who finally wants to breathe new life into our failing aviation. Let's wish Poulet best of luck for his test today. The days are short now, the Caudron G.-4 device suffers from the drawback of its quality: it is safe, but relatively fast. So let's not expect a slaughter of speed records. Poulet wants to go far, very far and must, therefore, take care of his horse. »

I finished the decal sheet. I did a test to see if their sizes were correct before having them printed by one of our colleagues who very kindly offered to print them for me on a good printer.

I used EXPERTS-CHOICE transparent paper. I made two prints, the first with a printer  set to plain paper and standard printing (Epson inkjet). The second set on glossy paper in high definition. Prints are clean with no smudging. The first impression was correct, nothing more, and the second satisfactory.
12 hours of drying later, the paper had absorbed the ink, creating 1mm halos around each drawing, making the decals unusable.

(https://i.servimg.com/u/f44/18/28/16/13/1110.jpg)[ /url]

I tried again to dry the ink more quickly with a hairdryer...I didn't even have time this time to take the hairdryer in hand. Halos!!!

I can't print with less ink...I don't think I missed anything in the use of decals since I had to stop at the 1st step...

The Passion 132 after-sales service which sold me the EXPERTS-CHOICE transparent paper contacted the manufacturer for explanations but remains silent despite their reminders.

I tried a new one by sanding the paper before printing with 1000 and 2000 sandpaper until it became matte almost everywhere (the paper is not completely smooth). It took me a good half hour (ordinary paper printing and the best possible quality).
The result is good now even after overnight drying.

It's still distressing to have to print 2 A4 sheets to succeed in obtaining 1 correct result. 11euros for 3 sheets with shipping costs.

A few test photos to check that everything fits...before having them printed.
This is not always the case so I gropely resize the drawings. The print quality is a little tight, I think, especially for flags and texts. I hope better on a laser.

Now I have to get started for real...

I removed all the fittings on the masts and tail beams. I will replace them with paint most likely.
I removed, by pure vice, the "bundles" which serve as shock absorbers and I therefore dug the two small elongated holes to place new "rubber bands" (lead here to test). Allow 3 or 4 hours of work for the train anyway...
