Title: Resin Idea?
Post by: Gisbod on December 21, 2018, 07:34:50 AM
Lying in bed the other night...

I somehow got to thinking about the idea of a small model, in a small glass/ perspex dome suspended in resin. Literally in ‘flight’. Resin poured in and the aircraft somewhere in the middle. It could look really cool?

However, would the clear resin be clear enough? Would it distort? Any technical reasons why that wouldn’t work? I’ve ordered a 1/72 Eduard Fokker Dr.1 in anticipation. If it did work, imagine the possibilities! A spitfire and a V1; 2 aircraft in combat; rockets firing; 2 different scales of aircraft representing distance; baling out; fluttering pennants!

Never to get dusty or to get broken, just suspended like a prehistoric fly in Amber until the end of time!

I’m sure someone will come up with a reason not to...

The heat generated by the curing resin may distort the model.....
But it has been done!

I have been toying with this idea and I concluded that a cottage paper weight industry might be possible!

Hello, Guy,
Your idea sounds good and I know that something like this has already been done with an exploding submarine and it also looks great.
Of course you can pour the model into resin up to the upper wing, let it harden and fill the rest with resin in a second session.
You should use acrylic glass as the casting frame, which you form into a box with an appropriate adhesive (e.g. UHU-Hart).
The only concerns I have are air pockets that collect under the wings or in the fuselage and remain visible in the resin during hardening. You will also need to use a resin that is highly viscous, shrinks minimally and does not get hot during curing.
Maybe you should test it first with a cheap, unpainted model.
Bye,
Manni

Thanks chaps,

Excellent! It may at least be possible then!

I think experimentation may be the key.

Manni - I knew you’d know the answer! I could fill up the fuselage first to prevent air pockets. If I did the casting in two parts would there be any kind of ‘join’? Does anyone know of a specific resin product that would fit the bill?

i only know that layers should not be a problem, I know somen armour modelers who do beach/water diorama's and they mostly pour in layers to prevent heat build-up. as long as it stays clean you should not notice the layers.

The only way to know, is to try.  Go for it!

Thanks,

Yep, the model arrived today and I’m about to look for a suitable resin resin and an appropriate dome..  any suggestions for cloud & smoke?

Manni, I’ve looked at the sub explosion diorama - and wow!

So, resin update - ended up in total failure and a blob of mangled plastic  ???

But... I made certain errors in the mix and application. It’s very much a trial & error process and I think it WILL work if I keep at it..

I’m going to try with a small 1/144 scale something in a small a mould as I can find...

If at first you don’t succeed...

Keep going Guy!This is a great idea, and if sucsessful we will all be doing it!

Sorry to be a little morbid , but can we see the devastation?

Thanks, yep, I can see the potential!

I’m afraid it’s in the bin...  But it was quite spectacular!

I saw a marvellous model at the Scottish Nationals last year of a destroyer sitting on a resin sea above a submarine visible through the clear medium fathoms below. It was small scale, resin block about 30cm cube. Looked fantastic.
I'm afraid I didn't take pic or know modeller's name but a search might produce results.
So - it can be done, Sir Gisbod! Who Dares Wins, and all that...
