Title: Albatros D.V - Puck Naval Air Base, 1921 (1/48, Eduard)
Post by: PrzemoL on November 16, 2018, 03:44:11 AM
I am presenting the result of a completely unusual project for me. My first ever 48th scale build and my first ever client build. Surely, if it was not for the latter, the former would not occur.

The model is almost OOB, as requested. I got the old version of the Eduard kit to work with. I have replaced the PE cabane struts with scratch built ones from plastic profiles and the water pipes - made of soldering wire. Rigging without turnbuckles - also as requested.
The model represents the Albatros D.V used in 1921 in Naval Air Base in Puck.

Fantastic build(s) PrzemoL.  I am sure your client will be extremely happy with your build.  Very nice touch showing the three scales.

Super models. I did not know that the Polish air force used Albatros aircraft (but perhaps I should have guessed that they did!) As usual a near perfect model - very striking indeed. The trio look really good - just a shame that you have to give one of them away as they are an interesting group.

Stephen.

Beautifully clean little "Albie" Prze, as Juan has said your client should be very pleased with it. I too had not seen this scheme before, how many were operating with the Polish Forces?
Cheers,
Lance

Beautiful model and a really interesting livery. The trio looks really fine, pity to separate one...

Nice and clean build. I like the gray overpainted crosses on the wings in that area only, straightforward solution ;)

Does it changed your mind about that scale, and you will build one or two more biplanes in 1/48?

Cheers,
Frank

Your client is a lucky man to have such a beautifully done Albatros ! I really like the unusual scheme. Having built a couple of those early Eduard Albatri I know the work you had to do to get this one to such a High Standard!

Thank you everyone for your kind comments on this relax straightforward build.

As for the subject - it is hard to find a German WW1 plane still in service in 1918 which did not make it to serve in Polish fledgling aviation. We flew what we could get in the Polish territory occupied by Prussia and A-H and what we could buy around. According to some sources we had 17 Albatros D.Vas and one single D.V - this one I modelled. However, it is a hybrid - it features aileron controls from D.V but has that extra reinforcing strut at the base of wing supporting Vees.
The scheme itself is a guess, the only photo shows a dark fuselage and most probably translucent wings. The client wished to have the upper wing crosses overpainted in the same medium grey (zone not seen in the photo) which is a reasonable guess for the fuselage. And the lower wing cockades - overpainted with white and Polish checkboards in place (not seen in the photo, either). I would do it differently but the model is not mine. :-)

And I did not fall in love with this funny scale, neither large, nor small :-) I may repeat building it in future if I am tempted by the same client but definitely not for myself. To make things clear, for the payment, I will get the hand drawing of this aircraft! This was the only reason I acepted the commission.

Beautiful work as usual, moreover the "little family" is  beautifully eye-catching, bravo!
