Hi
I got this kit for a ridicously cheap price at the Wingnut stand at a Model Expo here in Wellington earlier this year. I think the cheap price was because it was missing the original instructions which were replaced with a photocopy of the PDF instructions - who cares? I think they had only a few Hannovers up for grabs so I was quick to get one as I have always wanted this kit.
I'm recently underway and I'll be doing scheme E - the trainer in pale blue - mainly to avoid having to paint lozenge which all of the other schemes require. I'm already massively impressed with the detail in this kit which is combined with an almost click together fit - others have commented on this in the past. I am further on with it than the images show here but having camera problems so can't bring it up to date just yet.
The crank case is a little dirtier than intended. Got carried away. I'm not going to wire this engine because I'm going to make it fully cowled but I did take the time to paint the incredible detail e.g. spark plugs even though you won't see them. I'm sort of questioning the whole wiring thing in any regard as it is so difficult for me and has little payback to my eyes (except when done by the experts here)...

Nice start Alistair,looks great.

What Dave said!
I like the monochrome trainer version if the Hannover, because this „monochromity“ makes the shape of the plane more „visible“.
-
I'm going to be very interested in following your Build of this one Alistair, we haven't seen a lot of this Kit here and I've avoided the temptation to start mine. That lozenge is another reason I've left her in the stash; a great looking design and one that will look good on your shelf.
Cheers,
Lance

Very cool! I really like that forward firewall -some very tidy paintwork there!
-
Alistair,
Great start! I have this same kit I only bought recently. I'll be following along to see how you get along.

Terrific start! I am looking forward to the rest of the build.

Great start, she is turning out quite nicely.

Thanks all
I have finally got my lost camera back from my teenage daughter >:( so will post updates in the next few days as I'm further on than the previous pics.
The delicacy of the detail of this kit is incredible but also dangerous. I snapped a leg off one of the camera frames and the radio frame during a dry fit install with both sides of the fuselage- my fault entirely but, man, it is fiddly and the pieces are very fine. Both easy fixes but now I'm very wary of forthcoming installations such as the forward machine gun which has six fragile threads that need to be connected into the cockpit and engine bay all at the same time. Big gulp of beer before I get that piece in place...and then the question - can I get it in after the fuselage halves are closed? Or do I have to mask it during the painting process - which is what the instructions suggest but it seems like a nightmare? I have already experience the downside of dry fit testing. Guy - Gisbod - can you help? Yours is my reference Hannover!
This is my 4th WNW plane and, detail wise, easyily the best so far which is saying a lot!
Cheers

Hi
Update and ready to close.
Many errors - all my fault. Corrections include adding a new instrument to the frame between the pilot and observer. It is a stress meter for the modeller and created from the blob of glue created to get the broken frame back together. I've also worked out that the forward machine gun can be installed after closing the fuselage but it will be a challenge with the many frames that asociate with it and have to be fitted.
You will also see the broken radio frame but this turns out to be a good mistake - makes the two halves easier to fit and I'd break - or cut it - on purpose if I did this kit again.

Haha, I like the Stressmeter: Should becsupplied by all manufacturers as an optional part!
Your Hannover is coming along very nicely! Looking forward to see more! (Steady, man, steady!)
-
Gorgeous looking interior, Alistair! I, too, like the Stressmeter option. Keep up the outstanding work.
Cheers,
Bud

Superb work, very impressive looking forward to following the rest of the build.

Terrific Interior work! Looks neat and clean! Looking forward to the next update!

Hi - thanks to all for feedback.
All locked up now. A testimony to the engineering of this kit - tiny amounts of fill for a seamless finish of the fuselage top and bottom. All now painted in the base colour. The wings had some pre-shading but it is very hard to see.

Next steps:
Gloss coat the body and wings.
Mask off ribs.
Dapple all with sponge applied darker coat of blue.
Over spray with thinned base colour (if necessary)
Clear coat.
Future coatings...
Onwards!
Cheers

Wow, one heck of a start, you seem to be flying through this!

Really outstanding work. The Interieur looks great. I'm allways impressed how high the skill level in this forum is.

Thanks all
Have progressed lately and now pretty much ready for final assembly of the Hannover. Although it doesn't show up very well in the photos I achieved the mottled finish I was looking for with a spounge technique. Spray on base blue, spounge on darker blue then lightly re-spray with a slightly lighter blue than the base blue. Much more visible in reality...There is more weathering than I am used to doing but I'm pretty pleased with the results - could even go further??? Maybe next time...

Installing the machine gun was the trickiest bit so far with 5 support legs to be plugged into their various holes - worked out though after multiple dry fits. Still have to add the sight.

I am installing all the cowls which means I have to butcher the port side of the engine to get that cowl to fit. Nevermind.

She looks gorgeous. Great looking scheme and build.

Alistair,
You've nailed that mottled finish beautifully and your highlighting/shading and the subtle weathered effect is superb. Nicely done, she's going to be a real stunner!

Not sure how I missed this.... but I completelly agree with Lance - that is a stunning finish that you have achieved so far. First class modelling.

I have to agree with Lance on this one. Superb work on the Mottling and painting/weathering!

Very nice progress on the Hannover. The light blue brings out its outline quite clear, so this is an interesting scheme here.

Lovely interiors, with a real look. And beautiful finishing of the exterior painting.

Very fine work, both inside and outside.

Thanks all
Your positive feedback is much appreciated. It is an incredibly well engineered kit with many very fine parts. But only one tiny breakage to date and it won't be seen as it is under the cowls so I won't even bother to fix.
Planning to finish soon but the garden also beckons - well actually screams out for attention!

Well it is all ready for final assembly - maybe next weekend - work is very busy...
The engine cowls proved to be a five part challenge but, in testimony to the engineering of the kit, they all fit tighly together in the end. I really like the sweep and wash of the upper wing so I have positioned the aerilions in a neutral position which best shows it off.
I am using a very simple jig as can be seen here ;)

Excepting for the propeller and rigging batons this is all done now. I very much like the sweep of the wings on this plane and the way the leading edge of the upper wing is so far forward of the lower wing. It looks like it wants to fly! I may post in the completed section when I get the propeller done and the next model for me? I don't know...but a WW1 plane for sure!

Exceptional work.
I'll be stealing the sponge technique.

Lovely Alastair!
Very nice, subtle effects.

Thanks Steve, Guy
Steve - I copied the sponge technique from Gary (I think?) on his brilliant Roland model posted here. I think he did a better job than me though.
Guy - your yellow wing version was an inspiration for me. I tried your salt technique for the mottling but without success!

Stunning work! The mottled effect is just great and makes the model look very realistic.

Thanks Manni, Guiseppe and Rick
I finally got the prop on after waiting an eternity for the oils to dry. Also got the rigging batons on which was more fiddly than expected. So all finished now.

Beautiful, Alistair! I love the Hannover since I was seven (Airfix, you know..) and your build is truly a beauty! Thanx for sharing! The non-camouflage single-colour scheme shows off the plane's shape best, I think.

Excellent work Alistair. Love that prop too, great wood effect.
Thanks for sharing this.

Wonderful finish Alistair, one to be proud of. That prop is as good as it gets without chopping up a piece of tree, really impressive work!

Thanks Lance, Dave, RH and Rick
I really appreciate such feedback from modellers whose work I greatly admire.
I have just started a WNW Fokker EIV but with summer holidays coming up probably won't be posting anything on that until February.
Have a great Christmas!

Beautiful model Alistair, I particularly love the very convincing degree of wheathering!
