Picked this up from the Wingnut Wings display stand at the Upper Hutt Scale Model Show today. Just got back up to Auckland and couldn't wait to crack the box open...

The completed model on display is absolutely stunning and I have no doubt it will sell well.
I'm finding that I'm having big gaps in between sessions with the W.29 due to paints having to dry, so thought this would be a perfect project to run alongside...

Not a huge amount of plastic in the box, but this sin't a big aircraft. But it's about quality rather than quantity 8)
Hope to start cutting some styrene tomorrow. Stay tuned.

Thank you Gary, for sharing your Junkers D.I buildwith us! I'll be following this thread closely. Already got an idea, which version it will be? I like the silverish one, reminds me of the „Golden Age of Flight“ to come in the twenties.. But then there's the Freikorps version, which is historically interesting...

Looking forward to this build as well, I like the silver one too. How often does one get to try a bare metal finish on a WWI plane! Kind of reminds me of the final scenes in the movie 'The Blue Max' only that plane was a dressed up Morane Parasol but it has that prototype feel to it. But I also love the history associated with the Sachsenberg one as well.

Promising build, I will follow with interest.

Watching closely
Steve

Like the others I am looking forward to watching your build!
RAGIII

I'll be following too, thanks for being the first. :D
-
Gary,
I'm still sitting on the fence on this Kit so I'll be following your Build closely as you "break new ground" with a start on the first day it's available. The Sachsenberg scheme is my favorite at this point.....
Cheers,
Lance
-
Mine is a preorder so I should have it soon. I'm watching to see what you can do with it.
-
This should be interesting to watch come together.
-
No pressure on me then :P ;D
Okay. Construction starts, as usual, with the cockpit. Here are the major components, all dry fitted at this stage....

I'm probably going for version D, the bare aluminium scheme as it'll be nice to have a 'clean' aircraft in the collection for once ::)
Gary
-
Good luck, Gary. This looks to be a very neat subject with a full range of subjects and colours. I'll be following your progress with great interest! 8)
-
Flies together with the greatest of ease :D
The Micro Kristal Klear has yet to fully dry on the altimeter which is why the gauges is still a little white at this stage. Otherwise, no issues so far to report. Just plan ahead - especially with the control lines, and you shouldn't hit any snags.

Wow, great build! Looks like the WNW is much better compared to my Roden kit in 1/48.
Do you paint with airbrush or glue it all together and paint then with brush?
Cheers,
Frank
-
That's a beautiful "transitional aircraft," from wood and fabric to stressed metal skin and tubular frame. Very nicely done so far, Gary. Continue as you began and you'll have a first rate model on your hands! 8)

Great work so far. Looking forward to more

I try to AB as much as I can before comitting to cement. Some parts need a brush obviously.

Looking awesome! The instrument bezels look very realistic. Well done overall interior!

Lovely work. I will watch carefully.

Office is complete. Aside from Ezi-Line, everything is as per kit expect for the spark control lever which I had to scratch build as the origimal went flying out of the tweezers into oblivion :o

Fuselage interior gets a coat of flat aluminium and a light wash....

... before they are cemented together....

At the stage, the fuselage halves are just cemented to each other, not to the undersides. I'm waiting for the cement to cure overnight first as it will need some minor clamping to get the parts to sit together correctly - especially at the trailing edges of the wing roots.
Gary
-
Very nice! And looks tempting... ;)

great looking cockpit!
can't wait to get my own kit and get started. looks like an other great WnW kit and a quick build as well!!
looking forward to your next steps!!

Very nice work!!

Outstanding Gary, she is coming along quite nicely (Understatement on my part). ;D
-
Stunning interior! The leather seat and seat belts are outstanding!
RAGIII

That cockpit looks awesome!

Thanks guys :)
A little help is required to get a snug fit - still needed a minor amount of filler along the joins....
Preparing the wings etc....
Fuselage upper panel is a nice fit. Does require some filler where the cockpit padding meets though unsuprisingly....
I noted that the rudder post was a little bit of a lose fit in its mounting hole so I added a short piece of styrene tube....
.. which gives a much more secure fitment....
And dry fitted to the fuselage....

Have to agree with Alistair. Quick and extraordinary work all around. I Love the engine details!

Coming along very nicely Gary. The engine is superb; can you elaborate on the plugs and wires......... materials/parts used etc.? To this day I still struggle with that step, and yours are beautifully done.
Cheers,

Looking quite good Gary, if I blink I will miss the end.... ;D

Nice steady progress.
The engine looks great.

Thanks guys. Much appreciated.
@ aliluke. Going for the plain metal finish.
@ Icarroll. I used brass tube for the spark plugs and .010 lead wire for the leads.

Outstanding project my friend. Looking forward to the next impressive up date.

Wow, The engine looks just beautiful, and you're doing a great job of putting it together so cleanly!

Great work so far and thanks for the heads up on the rudder. Hoping to start mine tomorrow, pushing all other projects aside to do it. Seeing what you have done so quickly is inspiring.
And thanks for sharing.

Radiator WIP....
Not visible in these pics is the lack of detail were the main water pipes connect to the rad. Not join connectors. Not an issue if you put the engine covers on, but if you want to show the engine off, you'll need to scratch some. That's my next task....
Gary
-
Great work. The engine is indeed very finely done.
-
Cheers PrzemoL
Babysitting our 2yo grandson over the next few days while his parents are on a short break in the South Island so limited modelling time for me. However, have taken advantage of his early night and fitted the radiator along with the flash guards....
I made the connectors between the water pipes and radiator from thin walled brass pipe and strips of aluminium...
Didn't notice it before, but somehow managed to knock of the coolant pipe for the intake manifold water jacket??!! :-\ Knocked up another from copper rod and have left it unpainted as I think it looks better than the usual black. You can see it just below the flash guard in the 2nd photo.
Next up will be the Spandaus and plan on using these beauties this time round....

Managed to grab a little bench time this evening and fitted the MG mounting cradles and pipework (not sure what it's actuially for though?). Instructions said to paint everything either flat aluminium or green grey - I decided to add a splash of extra colour even though most of it will be covered eventually...

Love what you are doing, such a superb build. I think you Junkers will look grand once you finish. Thank you so much for sharing your build. i have splashed out on my first WNW kit of this Junkers and I'm so interested in what you are doing. It would seem this build is as lovely as the raw plastic implies. Those aftermarket guns sure good special and are right out there in the open with no upper wing to block the view.
I am looking forward to what you tackle next.
Kudos!

Love the finish on those Spandaus. They look absolutely spot on.

Progress is a little slow at this stage as the wings need a fair bit of work to 'hide' the join lines along the leading edge thanks to the corrugated surface. It's do-able - just fiddly and time consuming. Starboard wing is on though - port is on the menu this evening after dinner....

The plane itself is still not my cup of tea, but there's great workmanship all around this kit. Very nice!
Borsos
-
Thanks guys. Seat is just simply a red brown acrylic base with red brown oil paints gently 'stippled' on followed by a very light wash when dry.
Initially I was going to go for the all over alumimium scheme and while that would certainly be easier, I have changed my mind and will be doing the scheme on the box cover. Bascic colours are ready to go....

XF18 and XF1 are mixed as per instructions for the Light Blue undersides of the wings. Some tonal variation was also added by including a little more blue or white to the mix. When dry, two strips were masked off where the wings join the fuselage and painted white....
Gray
-
Leading wing edges are masked using Panzer Putty before the upper surfaces are sprayed with XF71 - white or black added for tonal variation...
Gary
-
After applying more putty, X16, XF52 and XF2 are mixed in equal amounts and applied via AB. The putty is used as the camo was applied by brush on the real thing so no soft edge demarkation lines....

Gary,
Your camoflage looks great. You know, you're the only person I've seen use Panzer Putty on a build blog besides me since I bought the stuff. Sometimes it's very handy.
Gaz
-
Thanks Gaz. It's great stuff isn't it? Normal masking tape would be a right 'mare with the corrugated surface on the D.1 :-\
Fuselage and undercarriage get the AB treatment next....

Awesome build. I'll bokmark this as I am starting my build today. I've been away from the WWI stuff too long. Already learning things from your build which will help mine.
JAmes

Love the colors as you've got them. Really stunning.
Gaz

:)
To bring the black fuselage 'to life', I added a little XF15 Flesh to some XF1 and dry brushed the raised details. The effect is very subtle (not at all like Verlinden from the 80s ;D) and serves to break up the monotonous solid black colour. I then brushed on a couple of coats of a Future equivalent in preperation for the decals.
A fair bit of setting solution was unsuprisingly required and here she is with her markings waiting for them to dry before they are sealed in with a clear coat...

What do you use as "a Future equivalent"? I haven't found the right stuff yet in NZ.

Now that is beautiful! What a striking scheme. I think the drybrushing you did really worked for the black fuselage.

Managed to grab a little bench time this evening and fitted the MG mounting cradles and pipework (not sure what it's actuially for though?).
The central one is the sheathed cable to the tachometer (rev counter). The two outer ones are the sheathed cables to the trigger motors on the guns*
This is an lMG08/15 with the trigger motor and flexible drive in place:
https://www.maximgun.de/deutschland/lmg-08-15/
The lMG and the Vickers both work in similar ways. Cartridges are drawn from the belt passing through the slot at the top, lowered and pushed into the breech. The cartridge is fired, the empty case is pulled out the breech, lowered and ejected through the tube sloping down to the left.
The trigger motor is the lump on the bottom of the casing with the flexible drive hanging down
The difference between the lMG08 and the Vickers is that the Vickers has the triggering mechanism turned upside down, so a Vickers has the trigger motor on the top:
Constantinesco trigger motor on top of case
There's a fascinating article here on rates of fire: https://riseofflight.com/forum/topic/30921-few-words-about-synchronizers-and-version-1026/
