Title: Sopwith Camel Stripdown, Eduard 1/72
Post by: Bughunter on April 06, 2018, 05:26:51 AM
Start

Long time ago (2015!) I started this Stripdown Camel. I was not registered in this nice forum, but wrote a build report in a german forum.

After request
I would love to see how far you have got with the Camel.
I decided to post the work from that time also here.

Warning: this build is still unfinished, but I plan to continue soon.

At the end the model should look somehow like this one, but with colors.

My information sources:

All started with the upper wing. As the spars are only PE with 0,15mm I replaced them with brass (sanded down from 0,6x1,0mm)

The whole wing is made from 3 big PEs, here the middle part:

All three threaded on the spars:

Many, many soldering points later:

An in a side view:

Aileron in the folding tool:

All four soldered:

The fuselage is a one pice affair:

Reinforcements soldered
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-W2PY6CLYVNo/VVe37TV_kkI/AAAAAAAAEEw/mIS9lmV5yfs/s800/rumpf02.jpg)

Ultra filigree framings. The problem is the coloring, I want to solder as much as possible.

First fuselage lines are closed.

The nice seat is soldered too:

Further struts like this added:

Wingtips are soldered:

Also the original wing was made of the sub assemblies.

The kit matches the drawings perfectly!

Right lower wing completed too.

Cheers,
Frank

I had some respect for a special task ...

A really crazy PE part.

The brackets must be raised up:

Soldered the front frame, ...

... After that stringer by stringer.

A brass plate forms the lower front.

Very careful sanded.

Now the engine.

I used at that time a Roden Camel kit of the Marine version (three engines included). Now I would use a Small Stuff one.

Eduard kit engine:

Thank you Andreas!

Tail and color

I was hard to understand the correct mounting of the tail plane, But I tried with the help of the Datafile plans.

The result:

To make the tail more robust I added already in this early state a rigging (0,2mm brass).

The tail skid (Eduard PE), but I think it will be replaced.

Modified the front further.

The undercarriage is soldered in this state too for stability.

Instead of a flat PE axle I used round brass.

My tweezers can hold it easily.

Backside view of barbed wire:

Total view.

The side panels are soldered to the firewall:

After soldering it is really stable:

The hamster cheeks are open from below, ...

... otherwise the tailor-made suit do not fit on the fuselage.

And now with color!
Painting with Alclads
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XBYzw0Uw1Kk/VYb1d0sqFII/AAAAAAAAERk/ilOwJXN1AXM/s800/color01.jpg)

Painting as basic layer for wood coloring with airbrush and brush.

... while keeping the alu painting.

With panels:

Then I tried the wood painting.

Try to keep the alu clean.

Parts of the tail will be painted in black:

This is all done 3 years ago ::) In meantime my skills improved so may be I would do some things today in a different way.

Cheers,
Frank

Outstanding project my friend. You must have the eye sight of an Eagle, truly amazing. Makes me wish I could still work in 1/72 scale. I hope you continue your Camel.

Thank you RAGIII, Gregory and Juan! It motivates really to try to finish this Camel!

Wheels

Now another surprise - I found a PE set from Part for the Roden Camel and started to improve the Stripdown-kit (http://images.gmod.de/gmodde/smilies/icon_spinner.gif)

This set contains also spoke wheels 8)

Roden wheels modified;

I used the folding tool from the Eduard Dr.I Stripdown kit:

I soldered a brass pipe for the axle hub:

Looks ok for that small scale.

All parts prepared:

A better tail skid from the new set
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ryw0R-2aLlI/VZgQEyBRouI/AAAAAAAAEW0/NY9wfCEHLCU/s800/sporn01.jpg)

Damn small hold parts on the globe:

... are soldered to a skid:

Compared to the Eduard seat ...

... There is also another seat in the set:

Two air guide plates:

I like to understand the technical solutions. Eduard has interpreted the drawings, but the panels have to be opened here.

A orinal view from below. (source: wikimedia.org with a higher resolution available).

So I added the air guide plates:

Now it makes sense - the cooling air can escape on the lower corner.

The "metal" parts are painted black. The rigging inside the frame was painted metallic.

For a stable connection I soldered struts and panels as far as possible:

Another view:

Very fine struts (so 2 PE plates are empty now) was added to the ailerons:

After primer Mr Metal Primer I painted with airbrush Radome by Gunze:

The wood painting with oils.

The panels have a slightly different color:

Also the ailerons
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-erg_lm-dq7Y/VaE8PiWY8xI/AAAAAAAAEY0/F1RByxVxpqE/s800-Ic42/wing22.jpg)

The real wood colors are not so dark and red as it looks on the pictures.

One more update will come to show the state at the end of 2015.

Cheers,
Frank

Thank you RAGIII, it would be really pity to let it unfinished.

Which cowling?

Front panels painted in Alu again
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-c3zJImPL9Cw/VaK3fly9c7I/AAAAAAAAEZM/5PnNLcUgFBw/s800-Ic42/rumpf17.jpg)

Some small parts are plastic:

The Vickers of the Eduard kit are better compared to the Roden ones. Brass barrels are really added.

On the left side PE from Part set:

On right side Eduard PE, a hair cross will follow:

There are some cowling options:

A: Eduard, a bit tight and flat. The engine will be a hard fit.
B and C are from Roden kit, form is better, engine fits.
C would be nice, because it shows the cylinder heads better.

At the front there is a small oil tank, the tightening straps for the fuel tank are from Part:

After some fight with the stubborn straps the tank (I used the bigger Eduard) is mounted.

So that is the actual state. I have still some questions, how I can fit the wings to the fuselage ...

For now I try to put my spare time into the Bristol Fighter but then I will try to finish this little beast!

Wow Frank, I have only just found this. If this was done with unimproved skills, what will you achieve now? I would not mind having your unimproved skills - they would be enough for me!! Wonderful modelling.

Stephen.

Thank you Giuseppe, Gaz, Ondra and Stephen for giving such kindly feedback!

Ondra, this Camel is very small for me, but for you it is twice the size you need!

Rick and Stephen, a word regarding my skills.
Modeling was for me a hobby for long time, but in the RC heli world and other areas.
Some years ago I started to build static display models, build a wooden stage coach in 1:10 for my wife:

Also the 1:8 Fokker Dr.I, and then I was fascinated by the brass stripdown models and started to solder those kits in 2014.
After seeing a nice collection of colorful WWI biplanes in a museum I moved my interest even more in that direction, so I finished in 2015 my first serious plastic model: the DFW T28 Floh.
Since then I built 6 models a year, so I have now 20 models in my glass cabinet. When I compare the Floh to the last Nieuport 17 or the Lebed VII then I think I have learned a lot from you guys here in the forum (and other places in the internet) in the last 3 years (or 18 models later) about colors, airbrush, decals, wheatering, scratch work ...  And this was lot of fun!

Due to special circumstances I can't work on my projects at the moment but I hope, that this will change soon.

Cheers,
Frank

Outstanding work, Frank.
Such fiddly things are way too small to handle for me.
Bye,
Manni
