It is with the greatest sadness that we wish to advise forum members that our Forum owner & administrator, Des Delatorre, passed away today.
Des suffered a serious heart attack a week ago and despite intensive hospital care, he has suffered another heart attack.
This Forum and the WW1 modelling family was a great passion for him and the challenge now is to continue the Forum in his memory.
Decisions about the Forum's future will be be made later but it will continue as it is in the meantime.
Des' wife Adrienne posted on Facebook: "It is with the heaviest heart, and deepest sadness, to tell all, that the love of my life and soulmate Des passed away this morning. David Wilson will be looking after the forum for the time being. Thank you to all for being the hugest part of Des' life."
Des was an outstanding modeller as anyone who saw his work on this forum, his website and Facebook would know. His passion for WW1 modelling saw him create this Forum and make an enormous contribution toward WW1 modelling.
We are devastated by his passing.
More information will be posted at a later date.

I am so saddened to hear this news. My condolences and prayers to his family and friends. God speed Des, you have gone on to a greater world where glue doesn't smudge and paint doesn't run. Keeping this forum alive in his memory would be the greatest thing to keep his spirit alive and with us in the future.

I am deeply shocked and saddened by this loss. I’m sure there will be an outpouring of grief for Des who I never met in person but who built and maintained a forum that gives me sand others so much joy. RIP Des. Dave - I live in Canberra ask if there’s any way I can help let me know. Matt
-
I never met Des in person, but enjoyed his site and his great builds. RIP Des.
-
I never met Des but, like most of us on here, have corresponded with him since joining the forum. Very sad to hear of his passing. A very good man has gone. Thoughts are with his family and close friends.
-
Blue skies Des... Thanks for all your passion and wonderful models and endless information you shared on this forum. Rest In Peace...
-
I am deeply saddened to read this. WWI aircraft modeling and this forum were his passion. Many friendships were made on this forum and the knowledge that is shared here is unsurpassed on any other forum thanks to Des. It was Des inspriation and determination that created this forum and his determination, dedication and integrity that made it successful. He will be greatly missed by all of us on this forum. Sincerest condolences to Des's family during this time. To those that will Carrry on the maintenacne and oversight of the forum have some large shoes to fill and challenges but I am sure the support that Des received will be ready and available to support those who carry on. Rest in Peace Des.

Prayers for his family; our thoughts are with them at this difficult time. Like many others, I never met Des, but am grateful for this place he provided, for a community to gather and discuss the old planes we love. His modeling skill, his passion for the subject, kind words of support for other modelers, and efforts to keep this a place where all modelers are welcome, have been appreciated and will be remembered by all of us. His ability to keep this Forum civil, and a place where we could always find modeling & research guidance, must have required a lot of effort, mostly hidden behind the scenes.
Thank you Des, and Blue Skies,
Rich Hicks

I'm heart broken, Dave. Thank you for keeping us informed. My heart goes out to Adrienne and she will be in my prayers as long as I breath. Although Des and I never met, I loved him like a brother. When I first got back into modeling 10 years ago, I stumbled on the Aerodrome and met Beeza there. He inspired and encouraged me right from the beginning and when many of us were booted from the 'drome, he provided a home for us here. Blue skies, Des.
Till we meet again, mate,
Bud

This knocked the wind out of my sails.
My sincerest condolences to Adrienne and family.
I only live about an hour north of them and one of my goals was to finally get down to visit them and view his spectacular works.
His value to this community can never be replaced.
Des, you will be missed - Blue Skies forever mate.

This is a sad news for all of us
We have appreciate his builds but above all his love patience and energy in running this forum
He will be for ever part of our memory.
My Condolences to Adrienne and family and to all of us - this is a great loss

-
oh, no!.... i am really really sorry for this very sad news.
i am speechless...
-
It actually took me a long time before i found out there was a forum attached to the amazing site Des had set up.
I was amazedand inspired by that site and that made me take my first steps into WW1 modeling, even if I kept it with my favorite scale.
Then i found the forum with so many experts, answered questions and more inspiration! I really changed my life and my love for modelling..
all my heart goes out to those left behind, I can tell you that every time I even look at my modelling corner Des will be in my thoughts..
Blue skies Des...

Terrible news..
As others have said, Des has brought together a whole community from around the world for no gain to himself. He was always encouraging to all and any level of builder was made to feel welcome. His excellence as a builder inspired others.
My sincerest condolences to Adrienne & family.
May his legacy live on.

RIP Des,sincerest condolences to all his family and friends.
-
What a shock to read this as I had my regular early morning visit to the forum.
Des was 'Mr WWI Aircraft Modeller' as far as I was concerned, he'd put so much into the website & modelling in general.
We've all lost a great influence on our modelling & someone who was always ready to help - however our thoughts will be with Adrienne & family who have lost so much more.
Russell
-
Des was a Brilliant Modeler as we all know. His efforts to put together the Best and Most Positive Modeling Forum on the net at no gain to himself has benefitted us all. I really struggle to find the right words to describe my feelings. My Deepest sympathy to Adrienne and His Family and friends. You will be Missed Des!

A huge shock on reading this news this morning.
RIP Des. you'll be greatly missed.
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth and danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things you have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung high in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung my eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long delirious, burning blue , I’ve topped the windswept heights with easy grace where never lark or even eagle flew - and while with silent lifting mind I’ve trod the high untrespassed sanctity of space, put out my hand and touched the face of God.
-
So sad the news this morning.
-
This is really sad news. My sincerest condolances for his family.

It is a severe blow...

I pray for the peace in heaven for Des' good soul.

Shocked. Heartfelt condolences to his family. May they take comfort that a guy with a simple hobby and a computer connection could make such a huge impact on thousands of us worldwide and be regarded with huge respect and affection by all.
I hope his eulogy may reflect this.
Blue skies and Golden sunsets.

Don't know what to say - just don't know what to say :(
That is a sad start to the day indeed. My condolences to Adrienne and family and of course to all his close friends who I'm sure are feeling this loss immensely.

So very sorry to read this news and sending love and prayers for Des's family. His great support and encouragement for everyone who uses this forum was very special indeed. He will be sorely missed.

Magic & Loss
My first contact with Des' mastery of modelling was a few months before WNW hit the market. I was searching for the layout of the wiring for a Sopwith triplane. Des' site was very informative on this niche subject. i became a (lurking) member a soon as this forum was instignated. His mastery of modelling was and remains an inspiration. Though we live worlds apart geographically, His passing is a loss both personally and for this community :'( :'(
-
What sad news. I am completely shocked an speechless.
My condolences to his family and friends. What a great loss.

I am speechless. I have no words in no language. So sorry. So sad.
My highest regards to a real wonderful man that I never had the pleasure to meet in person

So very, very sorry to see this news this morning.
Warmest condolences to his family and to all on this forum who have enjoyed and appreciated what he built here.
First his site, with those brilliant build logs, and then this forum, have constantly opened my eyes and taught me things. But the most important thing he did as far as I'm concerned was to help us enjoy our modelling. Much though he made us admire skill and quality and the work of the master modellers - and he was one of the foremost - he made sure there was always room in this forum for other modellers. He was usually one of the first to encourage you, whoever you were. And he kept this place civilised!
I'm very grateful to you Des - many many thanks.
Mark
-
I never would've built a rigged aircraft model had it not been for Des. After visiting his site, I reached out through email to ask a question or two and before I knew it, he was coaching me, a complete stranger, through the entire process. That's the kind of man he was; always making time for someone else. I'd like to think a very good friendship developed from there. It wasn't long before I found myself under his wing monitoring at another forum. After that debacle Des started from scratch building this forum which has blossomed over the years into the premier aviation forum on the internet. I'm deeply saddened by his passing as I've lost not only my mentor, but a very good friend. A very good friend indeed.
Blue Skies Des!
Chris
-
Very sad news. Let this site remain his memorial.
Thoughts and prayers at this time of huge sadness.

My deepest sympathy to Adrienne and all of Des’ family. This forum piqued my interest in WW1 aviation, and I shall remember him whenever I delve into a WNW kit. RIP, Des.

I am dumbfounded and deeply shocked with the death news of our friend and mentor.
My heartfelt sympathy to Adrienne and family.
-
Words are so hard to find at times like this. The world and our modelling fraternity lost a great one with the passing of Des. A kind and gentle man who helped and inspired all of us here in some way. I never met Des in person but over the, now, almost six years that I've been a member of this Forum we Emailed fairly regularly and talked for hours on his "miracle long distance phone plan" as I called it. We got on well and I shall miss him dearly.
My thoughts are with Adrienne and his family and my thanks to you for sharing Des with all of us.
Blue skies and soft landings Des, you will be missed........
Lance

I read this news and I understand this news but I simply do not want to believe this news. Sharon and I send our most heartfelt sympathy to Adrienne and to the entire Delatorre family. To paraphrase a well-known quote from Shakespeare, “He was a man, take him for all in all, we shall not look upon his like again.”
God Bless and Godspeed, Des, and Blue Skies all the way. I'm sure that you and Dan-San are getting long famously!
-
So sad news and what a shock for me. We lost a great man and enthusiast. Des gave us this great place to share our passion for aircraft modelling. My sincerest condolences to his familiy.
Dirk
-
I'm at a loss for words and I have some tears in my eyes and choked up. I never met him, but he seemd like a big brother and everyone here is family. Des' passion for World War I aircraft models was unsurpassed. He always had a kind word for everybody and this forum he created is the best, friendliest, and helpful forums anywhere, bar none. My thoughts and prayers are with Adrienne and his family.
Rest in peace, brother.

We're all the poorer for this :'( As Dan-San Abbot used to sign his Aerodrome posts: Blue Skies, Des

i didn't know Des 'in real'. but Des was partly responsible for my deciding World War One aviation modeling was not only a thing, but *my* thing. i only recently got back into modeling (quit when i was 13, i thought girls would not be impressed. i was a dumbass).
his builds showed not only that it *can* be done, but how.
Des was an inspiration. if the forum keeps going, in his name, he will continue to be an inspiration to people who are only just now curious about this hobby.
My condolences to his family and friends, but i'd also say to them that knew him 'in real': please understand that he meant a lot to many of us who never met him, and will continue to mean a lot to people who only encounter his work after his passing. he was outstanding and i hope and expect he will continue to be true north for WW1 aviation modeling enthusiasts.
-
Such a loss.
I will always remember how fairly Des conducted himself and set an example for all of us on this great forum.
Thank you.
-
How fragile life is..I will pray for you Des to see God's majesty
RIP

I'm shocked, and deeply saddened, to read this terrible news. Although I never met Des, we had exchanged emails many times and he was always ready to help. We have truly lost a great man, and a great inspiration.

You will be sorely missed, Des.

Terrible news, very sad to hear. Des's work remains an inspiration. Heart goes out to his family.

-
Such sad news. Always came across as a very genuine person with a passion for modelling and an unsurpassed knowledge on the subject. Willing to help and offer advice at all times. Will be sorely missed. Condolences to his family and friend.
-
Like many others I did not know Des personally, but I felt his warmth and humanity, and was inspired by him as a modeller and as the moderator on this site.
When I started to post on this site I had real doubts about whether any of my models would be good enough - Des welcomed me with a message that I will never forget - "modellers of all levels of ability are welcome here". Never a truer sentence was written. This site is the best organised of any that I have posted on: the community that he brought together is one which I value most highly: I sincerely hope that it will continue as a tribute to his memory. Des will be warmly remembered by all of us on this site and by many others who knew of him via other sites
My condolences to Adrienne and her family: at such a time as this words are wholly inadequate to express our true feelings. May he rest in peace.
Stephen.
-
So sorry to hear this tragic news. Des was a really great guy, always ready to help fellow modelers out.
Prayers for the family.
Russ

Eighteen new members (less than 100 posts) have expressed their sadness as Des' passing. It's the mark of the man that he made our newer compadres feel welcome and a part of this excellent forum so quickly. A belated welcome to you all, and all new members, from This Old Guy! 8)

What a great modeler, mentor and gentleman. My prayers to his family. I was always amazed, no matter what thread I was looking at Des had a positive remark to the builder. I've been on a bit of a modeling hiatus, but checking in here on occasion. This is such heart-breaking news. Like many of you who came over from the Aerodrome after the debacle, I was so thankful to Des for setting up this refuge and amazing source of knowledge. A kinder and more supportive space on the web you cannot find. And Des was always so warm and encouraging. He will be sorely missed.
My thoughts are with his family.

I haven't been around in a long while, life you know. Recently I got the itch to build again. I've got caught up here only to find this horrible news.

Oh, No! This is terrible news... Des was a really great modeller, teacher and a wise person... He led us to believe in our humble modelling skills while showing us how it really should be done. He ran a welcoming, nurturing, inspiring site that had us all coming back again and again.. a great achievement. I will miss him. My condolences to Adrienne and family. All the best, Marc.
-
Blue skies Des, you created something magnificent with this website, a true community where like-minded folks could gather together and share the joy of our hobby. Your skills as a modeller and scratch-builder were second to none. You will be missed.
-
I haven't posted here in ages because life got ahead of me with a transcontinental move, but I check in every so often and this was a very sad thing to see. Des was always a warm and welcoming presence here and a hell of a modeller, and it's a great loss. Best regards and sympathy to all who were close to him.

This is terrible news. I'm very saddened by his passing.I've only known him by this site and his modeling work. Like many of you I only new Des through his faboulous website and this great forum -his SPAD VII for one made me go out and buy one with the Pheon decals to go with it.
My condolances to his wife and family, and hopefullythere's a way this forum will keep being active, as one of his legacies.

I hope, as you do, Jeroen, that this forum can remain in Des's name, but I think we will need to make a voluntary donation to help with server costs and domain names. And then we need a couple of guys to take on the administrative tasks.
I'm more than happy to donate and I know there are many among us who are willing to do likewise. We need to stick together and make this happen. For you, for me, but above all for Des.

I've been away from the forum for a month or two and popped in to find out what new stuff came out of Nuremberg, but to see this news...I'm speechless. How awful.

I agree with this proposal, before sending any donation is it necessary to wait the donations go to a Des' personal account and therefore maybe it should switched to somebody willing to take on his role?
Someone (Dave?) should probably check and give us a green flag to donate, or just say it's OK to start immediately.
Thanks

Regarding the future of the Forum....
Adrienne has asked me to keep the forum going until such time as she has an opportunity to decide its future direction. She is very aware of how important the Forum was to Des and does not want to diminish that.
My intention is to run it as I believe Des would want it and without change.
As regards donations etc I have no instructions on that. Current donations go to Des' account where they help fund the forum costs.
With Des' passing the forum ownership has passed to Adrienne and I do not want to put any pressure on her or family members at this time.
As far as the forum's day to day running is concerned it it business as usual.
Offers of assistance are gratefully noted but at this time I ask members to be patient.

Thank you for that Edo, most appropriate and for a Country Music fan like me comforting as well.

oh my god what sad news, he was a good friend, i remember back after we left aerodrome and "joined great war in the air forum" he was a moderator and there was turmoil brewing , back then des and i communicated via email regularly. one day i brought up that we should just start our own forum to which he was hesitant. i dont know if i was the only one who brought it up with him but he decided to do it and we grew slowly but surely through the years, i have been absent of late but have been checking in periodically. i am possitively gutted. he was a great friend, a talented artisan and was always very giving of himself whether that was his knowledge ,time or modelling supplies. our world will not be the same without him in it. blue skies old friend

After the loss of my wife in November, I withdrew from everything. I had no time for modelling and no interest whatsoever. I'm just starting to adjust to things now and getting the interest back. Logged in to the forum, only to find this terrible news.
I know it's late but please pass on my condolences to his family.
Blue skies, Des.

My sincere condolences and respect to Des's family, friends, and all those who are affected by his passing. I have not posted on this Forum before, and maybe still would not have, but for this very sad news. I have been kept in touch with a hobby and a passion that I have somewhat neglected over the past couple of years thanks to my lurking on this this Forum, and of course that means it is Des I have to primarily thank for keeping the hobby ticking over for me. When I can devote more time to it, I will owe Des thanks for that, too. It is a very great shame that he has passed on, but it sounds as though the members here are resolved to keep his passion and spirit alive by continuing this excellent place he built. I hope that does happen, I will happily contribute financially to keep the forum here, I hope that a continued WW1aircraftmodels.com- continued in the spirit that Des gave it- will be a comfort to his family, it would certainly be a continued and valuable resource for inspiration and learning new techniques for lapsed modellers like me, and busy builders like most of you out there.
Be at Peace, Des. To your family and friends, be strong and find joy in your memory.
