Title: Sopwith Dolphin 1/32
Post by: Gisbod on January 28, 2018, 11:07:23 PM
Afternoon all,

Finished the Dolphin off this morning. Beautifully designed kit (as they all are), and a really enjoyable build. Things I’d do differently? The jury’s still out for me on the marbling - looks a little overdone in bright light - for painted canvas at least. I reckon it would look good on a Spit... I think the matt finish is a tiny bit too matt - next time I think I’ll mix flat and soft sheen in a 50/50 mix. Quite pleased with the open engine - I’d do that again.

Thanks for looking in on the build thread.

Guy

Wow!  What a nice finish.  I, for one, am loving the looks of these Dolphins!  Thanks for sharing and going the extra mile on this kit.

Great job on this one Guy, as with all of your Builds. I tend to agree on the open engine, it's far too nice to cover up! As for your comments on the final finish I'll be taking your hint on a mix of flat and satin or semi gloss final top coat on mine, something I decided on earlier. I really like the "bottom" shot, great and very realistic subdued exhaust/oil staining and spatter!
   Nicely done! 8) 8) 8)

Thanks Bob, actually I've just started (bizarrely) an airfix 1/72 Stuka.. Not much rigging required I'm afraid...

And thanks Ed, Rick, Prze and Manni  ;)

Superb work and the finish looks great Guy, you have captured the look of an “in-service” machine, but hey what about ground running that engine with no-body in the cockpit and no chocks in position to prevent her from rolling forward and taking to the air by herself? ;) ;D ;D ;D

Excellent result Guy.

I like your marbling technique, adds nicely to the PC variation.

And your open engine display has worked a treat!

Overall a very spiffy Dolphin.  :)

Looks fantastic -I like the contrast of the green/brown with the darker cowlings. Looks just right to my eyes!

Quite the contrary Guy, you "aced" it on this one! It's merely the "beauty in the eyes of the beholder" phenomena you are experiencing! We are our own worst critics. ;) 8)

Thanks,

Lance - I always say this at the end of a model. It’s just once done I never 100% like them and would happily just chuck them away. The pleasure is in the process...

I am not a fan of open engines on airplanes, unless it is displayed in a diorama where the mechanics are performing maintenance; but, that being written, I like the way this looks.  The open side doesn't take away from the overall complete appearance of the model and the engine work shines through.  I especially am drawn to the subtle staining on the underside and the highlighting of the ailerons on the underside, it turned out great and the mottle affect plays the light nicely.  A real gem Guy.

Thanks Mark,

There’s a photo in the instructions of a Dolphin with that panel removed which gave me the push. It has such a detailed interior that I’m surprised WWs didn’t give it as an option.

Guy,

WOW that is a beautiful model.  I like the finish very much.  The weathering/staining on the underside looks great.  One thing that caught my eye was the structure inside the open engine - the wood effect really pops out.  Great job.
