My second Christmas gift landed on the workbench two weeks ago, just after the Arma Hobby Fokker E.V. Here I plan to build the kit option C - the aircraft flown by JW Pearson in 23 Sqn. I wish to dedicate this build to my dear modeller friend - Bud Pearson, and to his grand-uncle - the pilot of this aircraft.
Tonight I have basically completed the preparation of cockpit interior bits for the assembly. I decided to remove the bottom rigging imitation and remade it in the form identical to the sides rigging. I also plan to run all the control lines to the tail all the way through the fuselage. I have also equipped those lines with 1/48 Gaspatch turnbuckles. The main fuel tank was enhanced with the holding bands. I also worked a bit on the engine, for a moment the electric wires are added but they still have to be arranged on the engine blocks in a more tidy way. Other than this it is all from the box. I have to tell after builiding almost all (with the exception of Pup) Sopwith kits from WNW that this one has surely the most packed and the most complex interior. Many interconnected elements, absolutely not the easiest one to get together. I hope it will all click on correctly.

Yes, me too Amigo as Prze is beating me to the punch on this one ! As I believe I told you this was my choice ( 2002 when the Osprey book came out) long before us meeting.

Thanks Ed and Bud.
Bud, the honour and pleasure are all mine. I owed this one to you for some time now. :)

Great start on another mini-masterpiece.

Hi mates,
Amazing start. I love it ! ;)
Best regards.

Nice one Prze,
I’m hoping to finish mine off in the next few days ;D
I’m in serious need of a master class on ignition wiring... what’s your technique?
Guy
-
Thank you for the kind words.
Guy, I am no master, there are more subtle ways to do the ignition wiring than mine. But if you like my method - it uses a thin (0.25mm) soldering wire - easy to bend, cut and glue with CA. Cut the measured lengths with some excess, glue one end into a hole drilled in magneto, paint to the desired colour (I hear there were multitudes of possibilities), bend glue to the spark plug and when glue is set - cut the excess with sharp razor blade. One could add some additional elements like holding rings or other fittings. Des had shown it finely in his parallel Dolphin build. I decided to skip this part, as in the matter of fact even without the top cowling such subtleties will not be visible in this model.

Beautiful (as always) so far, Przemol! I‘ll come around herr more often, now!

The seams have to be cleaned, partly filled and sanded.
And here is the remainder of the model elements cut from frames and awaiting cleaning

Three weeks of no reports did not mean I was not working on Dolphin. Actually it was all about cleaning, airbrushing, masking, shading, decalling, wash, initial assembly, etc. All this led me almost to the point where the final assembly may begin. There are still some final touches to wash to be done.
Basically the progress was from the box. My only intervention was in the plastic eyelets at the interplane struts. Having learned from Camel builds where I had a few cases of monofilament tearing off the soft plastic I decided to cut the weak spots and replace them with Bob's eyelets - only to learn that Lance Caroll did the same on his build ;)
So here it is how my build stands at the moment

Always a pleasure viewing your work, PrzemoL ;)
Excellent update.

Now I can recognize whose model it is, do not need any comment from author, all I need to do is see this delicate shading, the way of spotting, even if you do not see all such rigging. Promises to be another masterpiece. I am waiting for the final assembly ...

Great work, as always when you get your hands on a kit.

Looking fantastic. Beautiful work as per your usual high standards.

Przemol,
Can you provide a brief outline of how you did your shading? It looks like you pre-shaded and then post shaded over the roundels once applied. It's perfect! Also, if I may, what PC.10 mix or product did you use? (or is it a PC.12?)
Cheers,
Lance
-
Thank you, everybody.
Lance, my shading is post-version. I first did it before roundels were applied, beige brown on cdl and smoke on pc? Then repeated smoke post shading on roundels
I am not sure if it should be pc10 or pc12. I followed the WNW instructions calling for brown hue pc10. I selected the nice brown paint from Vallejo acrylic range. It is Tierra Mate from Vallejo Color series.
-
Thanks for that Prze, my technique is much the same however I usually use chalk pastels vs paint. I really like your results as they are very subtle.
Cheers,
Lance
-
WHooooo Baby! Nice job, Prze! As if we expected any less.

Lance, I have never tried pastels but as far as my understanding, delicate airbrushing with several coats of shading colour strongly diluted in clear lacquer does indeed give more subtle and uniform results. Give it a try, the trick is indeed in the dilution, so that one needs 3-5 airbrush passes to get the desired result. I found a drop of Vallejo Marron Beige in good ten drops of clear gives the fine result. With smoke the proportion of black to clear is even smaller.
Thanks, Dan!
And now, ladies and gentlemen, let me present - Sopwith Dolphin monoplane ;)

You may notice, that I have repainted the Vickers cooling jackets into Battleship Grey. It was rigthly indicated to me by Buzby, that WNW call for that colour. I was surprised at first but then checked the Cross and Cockade monograph and found a couple of photos clearly indicating this. As we well know, routine is dangerous. :)

Spectacular results as always Your painting and weathering techniques are flawless!! The tail rigging is superb as usual!
RAGIII

lol
its a Sopwith D 1.
-
Outstanding work Prez: I especially like your CDL tone, it seems to have a bit of a yellow caste to it which I like quite well and you have captured that look nicely. OF course, the rest of the build is in true keeping with your work, nice attention to detail and very clean. The rigging attachment points at the control horns a very well executed especially seeing how small and precise the holes have to be. Truly outstanding.

Beautiful work all round!!
Steve

Thank you for your kind comments. I will be back at my desk after Feb 24th. One week winter holidays!

Beautiful work, Prez. I'll be following and linking to this thread for the time when I start my Dolphin. You have certainly got it "aced" so far. Have a great holiday! 8)
