I'm taking a bit of a break from the Nieuport X and looking for a quick fix
So...

This is the Academy kit with a few modifications to represent N1177 of Escadrille N.76 flown by Lt. Paumier. There is a photo on page 27 of the Nieuport Fighters datafile special (vol 1)
I came across this about Esc 76: http://albindenis.free.fr/Site_escadrille/escadrille076.htm including a picture of Paumier's later SPAD:
Basing his personal emblem on that photo, I drew this up:
There are a couple of Gaspatch guns on their way, I also have the Tom's Modelworks etch so I'll knock up a simple interior
Richard

Looks like a great start - actually it`s half built ;) ;)
-
Nice work so far Richard, looking forward to seeing the next update.
Des.

Really looking great! You have done a beautiful job on the wing center section opening and spars.
RAGIII
-
That centre section scares me! I'm going to be a lot happier when the wing is stuck onto the 'plane. It was done the hard way, cutting the wing into three bits and then building it up with styrene sections. There are quite a few glued butt joints holding the wing together :o
Des, I'm trying to get a model finished without getting too bogged down in detail. So far, so good
Richard
-
Great start Richard, especially like the center (centre) section. Wonderful looking subject.
-
Odd bits of progress on the cockpit:

Richard
-
Looking very good so far Richard. Is the etched seat from Tom's Modelworks? It certainly looks the part; do you have a photo of what's in the Photo Etch Set?
Cheers,
Lance
-
Yes, that's the Tom's Modelworks one:
http://www.tomsmodelworks.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=22_30&products_id=233
If you have come across their products before, you'll spot wire wheels, controls, seat, eyelets, stitching, pitot tube, horns, access panels, propeller hub and a Vickers machine gun and a Lewis gun (!)
I've never made up a Toms Modelworks gun, I have used pieces of etch to dress up kit guns though
I'm not using all of this etch, just the bits I fancy. I will be using the stitching, it's more realistic than the Academy etch
Richard
-
Thanks Richard, some of those "Bits" look pretty good. I thought it looked familiar and found most of the fret in my spare PE stash, I'd used a few of the parts in my own (Hobby Craft version) Build last year, my memory is growing shorter with age apparently! It's a very basic Kit but builds into a nice Model with a few add ons and some improvements such as you are doing.
Cheers,
Lance
-
Like many etch manufacturers, it really tries too hard. For instance, the rudder bar and aileron horns in the kit are better than the etch. The good bits are very good
Richard
-
My this was quick: turn around and look the other way and you have a model half finished!
It looks very good tough and with the additions you are making it will look even better when finished - which will not be long either! Must pay more attention.
Stephen.

More work on the interior:
That yoke that supports the joystick is a bit big, hopefully it won't be seen much buried at the bottom of the cockpit. I'm quite pleased with the gap between the framing and the wooden bodywork. It allowed me to slip in a spent belt spool. There should be a fuel tank that is just visible, I'm not going to bother
I can close this up soon and get on with the exterior
Richard
-
Your interior is looking awesome Richard!
RAGIII
-
Right, I've closed it up

That Gaspatch Vickers is a lovely thing, and much easier to work with than the Eduard Brassin one:

This is the underside:

Outstanding work on the Lower panel! With your scratch building skills I am sure it was a breeze. That being said it has been something I have been hesitant to try for years :-[

The hardest part was making it work on a 'conventional' model that splits top to bottom.
Richard

Isn't that Gaspatch Vickers lovely?

Ammunition feed (starboard) and empty belt chute (port)

Richard,
This is anything but a "quick fix" or simple project as you termed it at the beginning. Having recently built the Hobby Craft version I know what a challenge this one presents and you are doing a splendid job of "taming" it! Great modelling, keep at it!
Cheers,
Lance

Damn!
Richard

Awesome work on bothe Machine guns and Mounts/ammo feeds!
RAGIII
-
Yes - only the Lewis is too far forward. I'm making a new mount
Richard
-
Better!
Now, if you break the mount, the gun will tip back behind the wing. So the pilot could actually change the can
Richard
-
Incredible work Richard, really love how she is turning out.
-
That'll do:

got a few of these kites in the queue.
your 'weekend build' is a major learning experience for me, taking notes all the way.
i'm only recently back into modeling. when i was an obsessed kid, we learned our skills from a few books and a monthly trip to the news stand. the internet is wonderful because i get to see the First Team build, step by step, the exact models i want to build.
thanks.

The remake of the mount for the Lewis is of course, even better ;D

It's right on top of the model, very prominent. So it's important that it looks right - more so than something in the bottom of the cockpit
Richard
-
You know, the Gaspatch Vickers is a really, really lovely thing:
That's pretty much straight Gaspatch, apart from the locking lever. I swapped the flat etch for some copper wire
Richard
-
Excellent workmanship here. This is a simple kit, but with a little work builds into a respectable model. Your are certainly giving it respect and then some.
-
Wow Richard, great work on both machineguns. Looking great.
-
Richard,
Really coming along nicely; I like the results you got with the etched "stitching" by adding the edge strips first, looks exactly like the real thing! I went through a lot of effort to hand stitch them and the results aren't half as good as this. Nice work!
Cheers,
Lance

The Tom's Modelworks stitching is more convincing than the Academy etch that came with the kit
Richard

Outstanding work on the stitching and edge strips! You are certainly making this BASIC kit into a beautiful Model!
RAGIII

Beautiful work on both machine guns and the stitching is excellent.

I'm pleased with the Soleil personal emblem, the fanion is probably a bit small

Parts count is coming down nicely now

A Nieuport high wing monoplane!
I have glazed the upper wing, looks like the glazing is lifting on the port side!
That windscreen is all wrong, it should wrap around more. More annoying is that the Vee support for the upper wing should align with the back edge. I should have cut more out of the rear of the wing. Future builders take note
Richard
-
Looking great to my eyes 8) I know to a scratch builder the strut being off by a Micron is bothering you but to the average modeler it isn't noticeable. I checked a bunch of Nieuport photos and the windscreen as offered is seen on many, Mostly if not all British, 17 and 23 aircraft. So that being said, I know you will sort this out for your outstanding build.
RAGIII
-
Yes, when looking for rigging pictures I found that flat screen. I think N1177 had the aluminium framed screen, the model isn't getting one
The rear Vee support (which in pictures looks to be a tubular steel fabrication) has a sort of forked end that carries the back of the upper wings:
http://fly.historicwings.com/2013/01/ending-the-fokker-scourge/
So the Vee has to sit right at the back of the wing. My model has it around three inches too far forward
Richard
I know that isn't a 17, I couldn't find an equivalent image online. See page 25 of Datafile 20
-
Richard, you are doing a damn good work here, looks great!
This invites me to put a Nieuport 17 on my workbench, but I have already enough projects running.
Cheers,
FRank

Coming together now:

It's a tiny thing, I'm really pleased I modified the axle fairing.
