Title: Wingnut Jasta 5 Quartet
Post by: Dave J on August 26, 2017, 05:24:47 PM
Its been a while since I have really built anything... Life is busy with work and family, as I am sure most of you are familiar with. I have been working on the Jasta 5 boxing of the Albatros over the last 2 weeks when I get a spare moment in the evenings. I also raided another kit for another set of sprues as there are 4 schemes that I am waiting to do out of the 11 provided in the kit.

Schemes that I am doing are -

Albatros D.V 2065~17, Richard Flashar (2 victories) July 1917 & Hans Joachim von Hippel (2 victories), February 1918, Jasta 5 (Red Dragon)
Albatros D.V Stallion Jasta 5, July 1917
Albatros D.V, Ltn Wolf, Jasta 5, July 1917 (2 victories) (Blue & White Diamonds)
Albatros D.V Gauntlet, Richard Flashar, Jasta 5, April-May 1918 (2 victories)

Currently this is where I am, post I have a lot of other parts cleaned up ready for primer and paint, hopefully that will be done tomorrow morning when I have a few hours to myself.

Really nice start. I love the light wooden tones. But why only three Albatros fighters at one time?

Cool stuff Dave.
Of course your stunning work is evident on the Wingnut website but it will be really neat to see it play out in a build log. Looking forward to that and to being seriously tempted by the triple set to boot.

Cheers,
Alistair (in Ngaio)

Managed to get in front of an airbrush this afternoon. It didn't start off well with the airbrush nozzle snapping off after I dismantled it for a clean. Lucky I own a couple of other airbrushes!

All the small items are mostly painted, just need hand paint the straps and brackets on some parts. I have been using Mr Paint and Mr Color for everything so far, bar the interior green which is Tamiya.

I should be able to find some time this week to start getting everything into sub assemblies. But man there are a lot of parts!

Such a cool project, Dave, and you've done some brilliant paint work on all the components.  Really looking forward to following this one.

Continuing to look great after the painting of the small parts. Yes 4 is even better never less than 3  ;D

I could never build four models at the same time - not even three, so you have my greatest respect. Not to write admiration for the quality of the paintwork so far. I really like the wood parts - ver realistic.

Everything looks very clean and tidy.   I can only do one at a time so your three +1 is a marvel to behold.  Looking good Dave, looking forward to your updates.  With this many going at one time it is easy to cut corners, but you are doing an excellent job all around.

Time for another small update...

Most of the interior is complete. Only need to sort the harness out, but somehow my lighter has gone walking. I guessing it wasn't put back after someone grabbed it for to light candles for a B'day cake a while ago. So I can't anneal the harness at the moment, so that is my only delay.

Mr Paint Ochre & Red Wood colours were used with AK Interactive Mud washes for the wood grains, and Tamiya XF-76 for interior green.

I am hoping to hit the four engines this week, and picking up a couple of lighters today so I can start closing up the fuselages in the weekend. Would be really nice if I can start getting some paint on the exterior soon.

Looking good Dave, very subtle washes.  Those darn significant others and B'days  ;D  ;D, holding back your Jasta 5.....

Dave,
I had the opportunity to "stroke the Sprues" of this Kit yesterday at the meeting of our local IPMS Chapter; there were only Three Kits there and given the amount of plastic in that box I can't begin to imagine how you can keep organised with 4!! Great work thus far, and I'll be checking in a little more often!
Cheers,
Lance

Looking good so far Dave:  I have the AK interactive but haven't tried it for wood tones yet.  I may have to give that a go as your's looks convincing.  Quite the large undertaking you have going there; I will be following along to see the updates.

Dave,

Just found your Albi thread. I'll be following it as I expect to start a WNW DV in the not too distant future. Very good work so far!  8)

Thanks everyone for the comments! I started cutting engine parts last night and finally picked up a lighter from the local corner store! Plan to hit those harnesses this weekend.

I guess its time for another update after finding some time during the weekend to down at the bench.

Three of the 160hp D.III engine blocks have been built in sub-assemblies so the cylinders can be removed and smaller parts have been keep separate for painting. I still need to build up one 180hp D.IIIa engine.

I did have a small accident with one of set of interior frames.... I will grab a couple of spares and fix this up which will be a quick fix.

The remaining three fuses are are ready to be closed up once the engines have been painted and fitted. So its starting to come to the easy side of things once the fuses have been closed.

Building one of those is difficult enough. Doing it 4 times over must be a bit trying at times! You are doing a great job though.
