Title: Question about 1/48 SE5a kits
Post by: KiwiZac on August 04, 2017, 07:11:26 AM
Hi all,
Now this is going to sound weird, but hear me out: which 1/48(ish) SE5a kit is the closest to actually being 1/55?

I have a reason for this. I'd like to build a New Zealand-based Replica Plans 7/8 scale SE5a which was on the airshow scene in the 1980s and 90s, photo'd by my dad at a local airshow in 1989:

Until the advent of TVAL this aircraft, and another, were the only flying representatives of the SE5 in New Zealand. I'd like to build this replica in 1/48 and quick calculations show that 1/55 is very, very close to the measurements of one of these in 1/48.

So. Are there any older "1/48" SE5a kits that are close to 1/55 scale, ie span of around 148mm and length of 115mm?

Any suggestions, folks?

The only one that I can think of that may fit your need is the old Aurora, Merit, Monogram,Smer kit. I can't remember how close that kit is to being 1/48 as some of those out kits were slightly out of scale as to what they were suppose to be. The old Lindberg SE 5 is close to being right at 1/48 so that one is no help for you. Good luck!
