I've noticed that Special hobby have announced a 1/32 Fokker D II as a forthcoming release. While it is more than welcome, I'd have thought that given Oswald Boelcke's successes with a Fokker D III, it would be a more 'saleable' choice.
Question!
Could one produce a D III using the Taurus two row rotary, and the Aviattic E IV cowling? The two airframes seem to be otherwise identical, but I'll bet there's something that I've overlooked.

If you are a Boelke-fan, have a look at this:

I don't see why not, it was basically just a bigger engine, twin guns, and ailerons instead of wing warping.

Chord on the DIII is a bit larger, Sir. Conversion would be tricky, I think.
I wish they would do a DII in 1/72.

just put it twice as far away. Then it'll be about the same size as a 1/72 one

Well played, Sir. My heartiest golf-clap....

I know brad Cancun did a very nice conversion of the special hobby 1/48 d.11 into a d.111. I don't remember if the wing chord was addressed though. It sure looked the part regardless.

I am away from my Windsock 'Early Fokkers' monograph, Sir, but my trusty old Harleyford 'Fighters' lists the chord for the DII as 3'10-1/2", with the DIII (and both stationary motor types) as 4'11". For what it might be worth, their DII drawing follows the tabulation, with a chord of a bit over 16mm in 1/72, which reads similarly to the figure given. In a couple of days I will be able to take a look at the Windsock number and see what it shows.

Thank you sir at just over a door that would definitely be noticeable difference. I will have a dig into my refs as well

Table 5 in the Datafile Special Fokker Fighters D.I-IV gives:
D.II upper and lower chord 1.15m
D.III ditto 1.25m
i.e. 10cm, or just over 3mm in 1/32 scale. A noticeable difference I would suggest.

In a book called Fokker Fighters of World War 1, by Peter Grey and Ian Stair, from 1976, the DII and DIII drawings show the same chord, about 16.5 mm each, which is 118.8 cm, or 3 ft 9 ins. I'm NOT challenging anyone else's figures, but it is interesting that what should be an easily defined/measured figure has so many variations.
One would need to know how the different artists/draftsmen came to their conclusions. Are/were there accurate original measurements available somewhere? Profiles of D II and (incorrectly labelled) D III on page 24 of Osprey Early German Aces seem to be about the same. It's an interesting little conundrum.
Cheers, Russell
