My first foray in to the WWI era since I was about 10 years old - the old Revell 1/28 SPAD XIII. I tried to build this kit back in the mid-70s, but didn't have much success, being a rather impatient kid at the time. Same with the Revell Camel and Fokker Dr.1. This one was built from the mid-60s boxing (white box top, photo of the model on it) that had markings for Frank Luke's airplane. Being 50 or so years old, I didn't trust the kit markings although they don't look bad and may be usable, so this one was marked with a set of decals from Copper State for Eddie Rickenbacker's airplane from late summer 1918. The kit was built mostly OOB, but I replaced the prop shaft with some brass and added brass tube in the prop to mate with it, and used my normal steel wire for rigging in lieu of the sewing thread that the instructions call for. I made my best guess at the French 5-color camo, using the instructions from the 1/48 Eduard SPAD kit as a guide for the pattern. Not perfect, but I'm not unhappy with the result. Sorry for having to link to the pictures; my computer is not being terribly cooperative about resizing the images:

I hope you don't mind Joe but I have uploaded your photos from facebook to here, excellent build by the way.

Considering that you have not made any models until recently and the age of this kit, I can only write bravo!! That is a really first class model - do post some more of your work in due course.

Nicely done Joe. So many of us here enjoyed this and it's companion Kits in years long past yet, as Ed points out, they still "shine". I had this one, the Camel, and the DR.1 hanging from the ceiling in my young sons bedroom in the very early 70's, and they loved them. Your bright colours remind me of the trio and those days, Thanks for posting this. :)
Cheers,
Lance
