Title: 1/72 Airfix R.A.F. BE2c
Post by: Danh4 on April 10, 2017, 07:03:03 AM
This is a really nice kit which goes together very easily for such a spindly biplane.  I borrowed some techniques that I've seen on the forums to replicate the translucent nature of the clear-doped wings and I'm happy with how that turned out.

Markings are for a 16 Squadron machine which carried the legend "St. Catherines Ontario" on the forward fuselage.  I made decals for that and the tail code on my laser printer, the roundels are from the kit.

I rigged the control runs with EZ-Line and the rest of the rigging was done with Nitinol wire.  I kept track of how much went into it this time and was amazed to find that I fully used 55" of wire!

Extremely well done Dan, the overall finish on this model is excellent and the translucent effect on the top wing is superb, you also did a great job with the rigging, you have a model to be very proud of.

I have read many times that this is a good kit: you have turned it into a mini-masterpiece. Brilliant.

Thank you all for the kind words!  The kit really does deserve much of the credit though and I was amazed right up to the end at how well it went together.

For instance- I added the windscreens as the last step and when I cut them off the sprues I was a bit disappointed at how thick and heavy the bottoms of them were.  I figured I was in for some tedious sanding and polishing but when test-fitting them to see what would need to be removed I discovered that they fit INTO the cockpit coaming openings rather than on top of the coaming like I thought.  Brilliant Airfix!

Another thing I really appreciated- all of the interplane struts were attached to the sprue runners by their ends, with room enough between them to clean up the mold lines and that made painting them all super easy while still attached to the sprue, something I rarely do.

Very nice! I echo all of the previous comments, most notably the wing translucency. No matter how nice the a kit is, it takes talent to make into what you did.

Keep flying 72nd flag. All round excellent build and superior paint job. You've absolutely nailed the translucency.

Cheers

I'm sorry I'm so late to the party, this is a stunning build! And you rigged it with wire? Wow! I hope mine looks even half this good.

And I must add to the chorus regarding the translucent wings - it looks pretty darned accurate to me:
