She's finished now. Contrary to my conviction this time I decided to build an airplane of which I neither know the names of the aircrew nor the number of the squadron. It seems to be a rather difficult task to identify those early war Albatros two seaters. So I followed the instructions of WNW and chose version "C", an Albatros B. II of early 1916. Several Abteilungen that made the reconnaissance work for the huge attack against Verdun still flew the Albatros B. II before it was replaced with C type airplanes. So my imagination is an early morning in February 1916, the weather that will delay the attack for several days turned the airfield into a muddy mess and an aircrew gets ready for one of their last reconnaissance flights over the fortress of Verdun...

The kit is a pure joy to build. I used Taurus resin parts for the engine and HGW masks for painting the front window. Besides of that I used Acviattic's RFC linnen decals for the flying surfaces, I love the subtle effect of this awesome stuff. The aircrew are two converted WW2 British officers from a Mini Art set.
I hope, you like it

Wow! That is a really nice diorama. I haven't built a diorama yet, but I think one is coming soon. Inspirational work there, sir!

You are a man of exceptional talents, Borsos! What I admire most about this diorama is the excellent balance of all details in perfect harmony.
Great job, sir, chapeau.

Dear friends,
your positive feedback is overwhelming, thank you very much for your kind words!
Happily I can tell that this model received Gold at this year's Fürstenfelder Modellbautage, one of the biggest Modelling show in Southern Germany. But what's more important: When I remember last year there were just two biplanes in the competition, mine and the one of a young fellow modeller. This year there were no less than 15 (fifteen!) biplanes in the competition (all scales), and a huge WWI diorama in 1/16 scale, what for me shows a growing interest in WWI modelling.

Borsos,
Congratulations on your Gold medal Award, very much deserved! It's always nice to see talent rewarded and the increased participation in WWI subjects is good news as well.

for this kind of scenery slightly and gold medal, all shown exactly the way it was ... here is shown a real talent for modeling :)
-
The medal is well deserved! Your model is a true masterpiece - I love the shading and the paintwork. Congratulations!
-
hey Borsos! I add my congratulations to the others! Having seen your work develop here on the forum, it was clear enough to me the high standard of your modelling, but the real thing, that medal, is very, very rewarding!
Very well done and much deserved!

Very nice Albatros! I have been considering using the Aviattic linen decals. How did you go about applying them? Base coat, then one piece for each wing? Do they adhere well?
-
Lance, igi70, Filip, Edo, Willy, thank you very much!
I painted the wing (wooden brown, then penciled ribs, thin coats of linnen color, I use Mr. Color), then added the decal and postshaded it. I didn't use Future under the decals, which I would nevertheless recommend. Last step is a coat of dull clear (I used Alclad II clear here that is very dull but doesn't get whiteish). And yes, I used one single piece of decal for the wings. The Aviattic decals are quite robust and don't at all tend to brittle or disintegrate in water as decals of some other manufacturers do. They are quite flexible. But you need a good decal setting solution, I used Tamiya's strong decal setter which is stronger then my normally used Mr Softener. If I had had the Daco stuff, I think I had even gone with this.
But as said before, I would recommend a glossy finish before applying the Aviattic decals as they sometimes tend to silvering.

Gloss white undercoat is stated very clearly in the instructions. Cut as close to finished size as possible before applying as when wet they really don't like being trimmed...
Best wishes, Richard
Of course... Normally I give all decals a coat of gloss before applying them. This time lazyness got me in its claws. Was my own fault ::)
Regarding trimming I went another way: I cut the decal about 0.5 to 1 cm too large (the bigger the Wing the more difficult to trim before applying the decal in my opinion). After that I left it to dry completely and even added decal softener then. Let it dry again. Then I cut the decal with a new razor blade exactly along the wing's contours. Went perfectly that way. I even overdecalled the wooden cover over the left lower wing. When it was dried, I cut along its shape and carefully removed the rest of the decal with some pliers. Perfect edges were the result.

Such an outstanding result bespeaks serious modeling skills. Congratulations on being awarded the medal. Well deserved. In my opinion this is one of Wingnut Wings' better models in that it showcases the state of aircraft development early in the war. Yours is a fine example.
