Title: Special Hobby Sopwith Tabloid 1/48
Post by: cduckworth on February 23, 2017, 11:21:03 AM
Special Hobby Sopwith Tabloid finished as one of two aircraft that where to destroy the zeppelin sheds.  I rearranged the serial numbers in the kit to match 168.   At this early date in the war there were no national markings.  Perhaps the types biggest claim to fame is being one of the aircraft to carry out the first bombing raid by British aircraft over Germany On the 23rd September 1914, which also included 2 Sopwith Type Ds.

Not long after that first raid, on the 8th October RNAS Tabloids flew from Antwerp and carried out a bombing attack on Zeppelin sheds at Cologne and Dusseldorf. Lieutenant Commander Spenser Grey, was flying Tabloid 167 but failed to find the sheds in Cologne, so dropped his bombs on the railway station instead.  However in Dusseldorf, Flight Lieutenant Reggie Marix had more luck, flying 168 he had no problem spotting the hangar. He dropped his bombs from 600ft and successfully destroyed the hangar along with Zeppelin Z IX No. LZ25.

Following this successful mission Marix ended up running out of fuel 20 miles short of Antwerp due to battle damage and had to borrow a bicycle and car in order to return to base!

One more view..

I started this model probably 15 years ago and didn't like the thickness of the rib tapes so I sanded them down and then the poor thing went back in its box until December 2016.  The rib tapes in prototype shots look very light on the top of the wings so I taped them off and colored them with a white pencil.   Top of the fuselage and sides were detailed with a sharp brown pencil to highlight the top of the wood formers and wire bracinging on the sides.  First time Ive tried this and it came out pretty well.

Nicely done all around. I like the pencil work! Always great to see a Hanger Queen rescued!

Lovely build of this early type. The ribs on the wings look super - much better than ridges.
