Hi folks, here are some pictures of my recently completed Wingnut Wings 1/32 DFW C.V (late) kit. It's my 10th WnW model finished and like every previous one, I'd buy another of the same since it was such a great modelling experience. I attempted to make this one a bit more "banged up" than others, and also tried to add a few details not provided in the kit (ie larger flare racks, anemometer mount, radiator vent) to match the period photos shown in the instruction booklet.
That same background and same two crew members are back again for the "posed" photos - Hope you enjoy the pics :-)

Really nice build. The prop looks great and I like the way you shaded the lower wing surfaces. The background is pretty cool too. And, I especially like the way you finished our figures =).
Excellent work.

Outstanding build all around and great work on a challenging scheme! Lovely presentation of the finished product. The figures are beautifully painted!

Beautiful model Gary, one of the most authentic looking finishes I've seen! Great weathering and a degree of "realism" we all strive for but very few achieve. Will I see it at Nanton this year? If so I'll leave my projects at home and just spectate! :-\
Cheers,

That's really beautiful, Gary! And you know how to photograph, that's important too!
I like the DFW C.V, but could not convince myself to buy one yet... Fancy a post-war civilian airplane...

Gary, thanks for the very informative "follow along" posts. I too have a DFW and plan to attempt the same scheme. You've given me some good ideas about weathering as well as another possibility for turnbuckles. I think I'll give RB's etched buckles a try. I've been making my own with brass tube sections and while they work fine and, with monofilament, can actually serve as a real turnbuckle when structural forces are needed in the rigging, I think with Wingnut Wings' fit and rigidity of the struts and wings, they are usually not needed. I plan to use EZ Line and I suspect with RB's turnbuckles this will look fine and make the rigging process a bit easier.
About your representation of the spars and ribs on the wings, did you seek to represent the upper structures as being a light CDL being pressed upwards against the fabric which as been worn a bit and showing thorugh the paint? The undersurfaces of the wings and tail planes look very realistic as "shadows" on the fabric. I like the upper surfaces effects very much.
This build has been a fine tutorial in attention to details for me, an area that I often struggle with.
Best regards,

Excellent, Gary, perfectly excellent....and yes, beautifully staged and shot.

First class model and first class photos. Following a first class build log. Thanks.

I must say I'm humbled by everyone's response - glad you all like the model.
Paul - your Model Cellar figures are second to none. I've met Mike Good a couple of times and he's a world class sculptor. I hope to find a few more of these types when I go to Omaha NB next summer.
Lance - if I can make it to Nanton this year I will, but promise me you'll be there with all of your latest builds! Your projects are world class, and I look forward to seeing them in person. Too bad more of us Albertans don't make an effort to get to these shows to see the work in person...
Eindecker - The effect I was trying to get on the upper surfaces of the wing was an indication of "structure" in the paintwork. Although the finish is streaked, I still feel the need is there to indicate the skeletal nature of the wings. Like you say - the linen would give a "highlight" to the raised bits, and I was trying to capture that. Same with the underside - which in daylight seems "darker", so I tried to emulate shadow underneath. I compromised the lower side by not adding all of the rib sections, but you have to consider effort vs. what is seen (?). Always a moral dilemma! I also did a bit on the tail, because if don't, it seems a bit more flat and boring.
Again - thanks to everyone who took the time to write a comment on my model, each one is truly appreciated :)
Cheers,
Gary

Extraordinary Gary!
Your build has been an education and also fun to follow.
I wonder what that aircraft looked like when first delivered to the front?
cheers :)
