14-10-2014 was born my grandson in Belgium. ;D
To commemorate this event I bought a new airplane model at my favorite shop. :) That day was available SPAD VII.C1.
Then I started to look for a suitable paint. It have to be a painting of the Belgian Air Force, so I found a the Belgian ace Edmond Thieffry. The choice was doubly fitting, Pilot was Belgium and before the war he studied law at the University of Leuven. My grandson lives about 30 km away from the city.
In July 1914 Edmond Thieffry he was assigned to General Leman. Captured by Germans, he managed to escape to Holland and again in 1915 he was joined to Belgian air force. In February 1916 he joined the 3rd Squadron, flying two seaters. Lather he was reassigned to 5th fighter squadron. Thieffry scored his first win in March 1917, and became an ace in July.
In February 1918, he was shot down, and spent rest of the war as a prisoner of war in Germany. He tried to escape, but unsuccessfully. After the war he returned to his practice as a lower. He remained active in aviation.
In 1925, he made the first flight between Brussels and Leopoldville, in Belgian Congo.
Edmond Thieffry died in crash near like Tanganyika.
This model will be painted according to the drawing.

In my stash I found also Spad VII.C1 in 1:72, I have a plan to do it paralelny. It will be with painting from time when it was used by 1st Polish Combat Air Group, formerly used by Russian 11. KAO. In this scale usually I'm doing planes from beginning Polish aviation.
Literature from which I will use when building both models.

Inbox of big Spad.
I will use PE parts from Part.
Inbox of small Spad.
For this model I ordered PE parts and decals, so it will be wait for it.
So I began the big Spad.
After surfacer.
Then there was painting the inside of the fuselage and cockpit.

Cockpit after painting, all parts are fixed only for test.

I think big problem will be with rigging, first of all will be problem with double wires.
Part proposes such a solution.
I do not think I will use this method, I will have to find another way.
Maybe these pictures SPAD XIII, which I did in the Museum of Flight in Brussels will help to find solution.

Awesome work on the interior! My SPAD VII suffered a horrible end in a crash so I am looking forward to seeing yours completed. The rigging does present a challenge. My solution was using stretched sprue :o Des replaced the horizontal support with tubing, out of my skill level, and did a great job. I think Part and Eduard both present viable options. I look forward to your progress and ultimate solution. By the way just a heads up on the engine cylinder banks. They fowl the fit of the upper cowling. I have not heard or seen anyone manage to get them to fit without cutting them down or leaving them off. I hope you are the first to succeed!
RAGIII
-
Great start, both the kit and grandson. Looking forward to your progress.
-
Adam, it is great to see you start this fine but underrated kit. Fine progress so far.
If you are interested in how I coped with it some time ago, there is a build log in The Aerodrome:
http://www.theaerodrome.com/forum/showthread.php?t=50150
Also Des has one on his website.
-
Following with great interest!
-
Thank you RAGIII, Juan, PrzemoL and Bo.
Przemek thank you for showing this thread. I think I've got licence from you . ;)
Probably I will use yours method for rigging, and bottom engine cover.
RAGIII now I began working on the engine, soon I will check if is problem with engine cylinder banks. I saw thread shown by PrzemoL, he has similar problem. I'm thinking positive, maybe this time will be OK? ;)
Adam.
-
Adam,
That's a great colour scheme you've chosen, and your work thus far is excellent! I have this kit and the Part PE Set in my "pending pile" and will be following your Build with great interest, keep up the excellent work!
Cheers,
Lance
-
Excellent choice, Adam! I look forward to following along. I have several SPAD VII and XIII kits in my stash and have yet to get one to the point where I need to figure out the rigging at the mid-span struts. I'll be looking to get some pointers from you on this.
Your story behind this build is sweet. There's nothing more precious than grandchildren.
Cheers,
Bud
-
Great subject! How will you do the markings for this aircraft? Are their commercial decals available, or will you create masks for painting?
Regards,
Bob
-
Nice start. I have this kit so will look forward to seeing this progress
-
I will use mask. Roundels I made on the Nieuport 17. but big problem will be the comet, probably I will ask one of my friend to do it.
Adam.
-
As above, a very nice start and a really colorful scheme to do !!
Ed
-
Great start Adam, love the SPAD and I've rarely seen this kit in any build logs on the net, though I know that Des and Przemol both built beautiful models with this kit.
Cheers,
Tony.
-
Great plane ans a very promising start.
I will enjoy this buildlog.
Manni

Thank you my friends. :)
Now short training before big rigging. :)
I used GasPtach turnbuckles. In back side on the left side are in 1:32 on the right 1:48. In my opinion these 1:32 are to big so was used smaller.

Now is time for cockpit equipment.
Adam.
-
Looks great so far Adam. You should take a look at przemols build at that link. It is a very nice build that I remember following back then.
-
Looks terrific to date! You are certainly making great progress!
RAGIII
-
Very nice start, I'll follow that closely from now!

I was planning to make the engine with complete equipment, but unfortunately the engine is too large and I could not mount his top cover. >:(
(http://i682.photobucket.com/albums/vv186/AlbatrosDIII/SPAD%20VIIc/mDSC08780_zpsnbmrrfzq.jpg)
So I cut off the top of the engine that it can fit the cover.

Now I preparing my model for shading, but write about it next time.. :)
Adam.
-
Lovely work, Adam. It reminds me of my first 32nd scale model :-)
-
Wow, you are using your time wisely. ;D Lovely detail work. :D
-
Outstanding work all around! You are making excellent use of the PE details and your scratch built details are also awesome! I had a feeling the engine would not fit. You are not alone there as I have said. Your fit of all the panels is excellent.
RAGIII
-
Really nice work Adam, the cockpit additions are spectacular to say the least. Your Photo Etch is as good as I've seen here, really impressive!
Cheers,
Lance
-
Well this is another interesting build as usually yours are...
The work on the PE parts is top level, especially the louvers.
In my opinion the canvas colour appears a bit too dark, I have an idea of a French CDL much lighter and yellowish, but maybe I'm wrong, of course!
In my build (http://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=525.0) (but the plane was not camouflaged at all) I used Misterkit #FR03 French Light Yellow for the CDL and Misterkit #FR04 Clear Doped Linen for the darker shade of the nose.
I already know this will be another masterpiece...
;-)
-
very impressive your work with the photoetched!
A SPAD built, hurray!
Xan
-
That is a very cool build of a very interesting marked Spad. I really like your enhancements.
-
Beautiful Spad coming out, I am following. Congrats Adam, superb work so far :)
-
Very nice Adam.
Jamie
-
Beautiful work! I have this kit too, but with the Eduard PE set. The Part set looks more comprehensive (and fiddly!) though.
I'm also curious about the MAC 1/72 kit; I have one too and have been thinking about a way to thin those trailing edges without damaging the rib details too much...
Jeroen
-
Thanks my friends, Yours kind opinions are mobilizing to me for further action.
Preparing the model for shading is very tedious. Wings have a lot of ribs.
Then I started to paint, chassis and engine cover, I applied the color recommended by Roden.
Since the aircraft was a British production, the top surfaces should be painted PC 10. I used the paints recommended by the WNW on DH.2 plane.
All metal parts was painted with the same paint, but more glossy.
For painting Belgian distinguishing marks I did masks.
When I removed the mask after painting PC10, part of the engine cover painting was gone.
Because I did not like the color of the paint, I changed the color of the paint.
Before me now is a very big challenge, I have to make a masks to paint the comet. Because I don't have the proper equipment, I will have to do it myself.
Adam.
-
Great looking SPAD in Belgian markings. Really enjoy your attention to detail.
-
Your painting is excellent as are the Belgian markings. This one is really turning out top notch!
RAGIII
-
You are doing wonders with a very difficult Kit Adam. Great work. detail, and inspiring to say the least!
Cheers,
Lance
-
Great work so far and a very attractive paint scheme!!
Steve

Really excellent ! A joy to follow and a great guide when it comes to the Roden SPAD.

My dear friends I'm back. ;D
I spent a lot of time trying to do my comet and I gave up. :-[ and I was looking for someone who can do it for me.
In the meantime, I decided to finish the model of the CH-37 Mojave 1:72 helicopter, from the Vietnam War.
I began it in December 2009. It need a lot of scratch building. I made interior of the cargo cabin , one of my colleagues made for me PE covers for engines. I spent a lot of time completing this model.
I can boast about some photos from the construction of this helicopter.
Cargo cabin.

On modeling competition in LASK this model, he took second place. 8)
I think my absence here is a bit justified. ;)
At that time I was looking for someone who would make me comet masks, I finally found who made those masks for me.
I painted it white and here there was a catastrophe. At the time of applying the second part of the mask, everything twisted, the mask was long and thin. >:(
(https://i.imgur.com/E2QVtEG.jpg)
It was necessary to make decals.
After finishing the comet I painted the crossbars.

Now it's time to make interplane struts.

The model is very difficult to make. It requires a lot of your own work.
I am so proud of myself that I managed to finish this model.
A second grandson was born to me in Belgium recently, and it is a good opportunity to make another model of the Belgian Air Force. It will be Sopwith Camel, I have already started the model and will show it in a separate thread.
Adam.
-
Really Happy that you finished this one to such a standard! Well Done!
RAGIII

Good on yu for pushing through Adam.
The SPAD is my fave. Well done!
-
Superb work, Adam. Looks really cool.
Bye,
Manni
-
Adam, this is a very beautiful kit of a very beautiful bird in a very rare and beautiful livery! Thank you for sharing your model here! What a pity that there are no better kits of the SPAD VII and XIII around...
-
You did a terrific job on your spad , love the scheme .
Terri
-
Very nice work, Adam. It was worth all the effort. And the finish is topp class.
Best regards
Andreas
-
Thank you my friends.
This kit is very difficult it needs a lot of forbearance and patience, I was very close to throw it through the window, but I was very desperate to finish it.
Adam.
-
Not a kit you see built very often, but that looks really great in those Belgian markings!
Best regards from their northern neighbours :)
-
Nice work!! The colour scheme is striking!!
Steve
-
Adam,
I somehow missed this earlier, what a beauty! I know this is a really tough model however it doesn't appear to have affected your results. You can be very proud of this one, great work and a great scheme!
Cheers,
Lance
-
A truly stunning and beautiful result, Adam! Those Belgian markings really stand out and make the whole model exceptional! Some amazing detail and fine work just makes this a superb project! Well done! Marc.
-
Dear friends, thank you very much for your opinions.
I am very glad that you like my Spad VII.
Adam.
