Thought I'd get the ball rolling on this one. As I've found my recent builds stalling a little. I needed a kit that I felt really enthusiastic about and on the recommendation of Des & Lance, I've gone for the Postwar Brisfit.
It's definitely got me fired up and, although I haven't technically got the kit yet (still in the post from Weta - I was hoping to get it yesterday :( ), I have received a few of the extras I've ordered for the kit... HGW fabric seat belts, wicker seat from Barracuda, spark plugs from Taurus ;)
So, I have managed to get the seat painted. First off though, there was resin flash along the open structure of the chair back, which was a shame as it wasn't easy to remove and it detracts from the otherwise 'perfect' look - to be fair you can only tell in a micro shot, but the 2nd seat that comes with the pack didn't fair as well and I'm going to have to replace that one for the Camel build...
Started off with a dark brown Vallejo followed by a light shade overspray to highlight, followed again by oils to capture the recesses...

The HGW belts are sublime and really look the part, especially with the creasing ;) highly recommended.

I'm going for a 5 Squadron one - India c1925 and will get paint masks made up. That's the plan anyway, but open to suggestions.

I'm hoping to actually get this one finished. I've already got some inspiration from Prze's recent build ;D
Definitely going to take my time and not rush this at all but enjoy the journey..
Thanks for following along.

Great choice Guy, and I know you'll really enjoy it! I went with the kit pilot's seat on mine, that motivated the purchase of two sets of the Barracuda items!
Cheers,
Lance
-
nice!
-
Very realistic painting on the wicker seat, top!
Jörg

Great to see that you have decided to tackle this kit, it is a beauty. Very nice work on the wicker seat and seat belts, they certainly will add to the overall appearance of the model.
Des.
-
Looks very nice! The seat!
Steve
-
Great start, I will follow with interest. ;D
Bye,
Manni

Great start, hope your kits gets to you soon.
-
Thank you all,
So do I Juan, it's been a week now since they emailed me to say it was posted... I think it was quicker getting it from NZ ::)
Guy
-
Love everything you've done, and this will be one to follow, Guy. The Brisfit is one of my current projects too, so I'll "throttle back" and watch you perform your magic and perhaps learn a few tricks 8)
Cheers,
Gary

Thanks Steve,
Gary, thanks, but don't be silly - I was hoping to copy yours!
Guy

Lovely work on the seat. Those belts are amazing! Very realistic!!
RAGIII

Nice work on the seat and great choice of subject.
Cheers,
Tony.

Thanks!
Finally, the beast has arrived and I've made a start. Firstly, after I'd chosen the scheme I realised there was a photo of the aircraft in question on the Wingnuts website! Not the greatest photo, but a photo none the less. It shows it to have the shorter exhaust (not as shown in the colour profile picture above) and small fuselage roundels with, I think, another letter 'A' on the centre wing section - the full photo shows 'D' & 'B' as well and, curiously, these aircraft both have the longer exhausts and large fuselage roundels:
(http://i882.photobucket.com/albums/ac29/Gisbod/Brisfit/EB3A63F3-3707-497C-8D53-5386879BF0B5.jpeg) (http://s882.photobucket.com/user/Gisbod/media/Brisfit/EB3A63F3-3707-497C-8D53-5386879BF0B5.jpeg.html)
I'm replacing the 'blob' spark plugs with nice Taurus ones and repositioning them (the kit has them central but they should be diagonally offset from each other) - the holes look quite big, but that's the right size to accept the spark plugs - they should just slot in nicely:
(http://i882.photobucket.com/albums/ac29/Gisbod/Brisfit/293D1698-97EC-4670-AF0E-59087A69FD10.jpg) (http://s882.photobucket.com/user/Gisbod/media/Brisfit/293D1698-97EC-4670-AF0E-59087A69FD10.jpg.html)
I'm also replacing the kit cockpit pumps with brass - I always struggle to paint brass effectively so why not use real brass!
(http://i882.photobucket.com/albums/ac29/Gisbod/Brisfit/7206FFF7-501E-4BC4-A4DC-D5D9891DB16F.jpg) (http://s882.photobucket.com/user/Gisbod/media/Brisfit/7206FFF7-501E-4BC4-A4DC-D5D9891DB16F.jpg.html)
I'm racing along at the moment and have cleaned up all the parts that require pre painting and have just sprayed on the primer- Mr Finisher 1500 - thinned and sprayed through the airbrush. I have a rattle can version but find it not so good for smaller pieces and prefer the control afforded by an airbrush.
I've also managed to oil up all the wood parts - so they're drying in the hot cupboard too :D
More progress soon (hopefully)
Guy
-
Great news Guy, it took her long enough to get to you. Looking forward to your progress. :D
-
I will be following along. This one is on my short list so looking forward to your comments.

Nice work with the tubing! I am looking forward to seeing the Taurus Plugs mounted!

Evening,
Broken the back of the cockpit ;) Des was right, this really is a cracking kit and very enjoyable so far. Very pleased with the Barracuda seat - although it was one of the 'old' batch so is a little narrow. The kit seat cushion needs a little trimming to fit.
I tried a different approach this time on the rigging and is a big improvement on earlier efforts..
Standard use of oils for the wood, and brass parts replaced with brass tubing....

Beautiful!
-
Outstanding, Guy. The detail really stands out here. You've a really nice effect on the rudder pedals - how did you achieve the "toned down" look to the silver?
Cheers,
Gary
-
Thanks Steve, Bo & Gary :)
Gary, the pedals were painted black, and then just a dusting of Alclad Aluminium to achieve a toned look.
Guy
-
Outstanding work Guy! The wood framing and wire stiffeners are terrific, as are the cockpit floor, tank, seat, and pump!
RAGIII

Great start Guy, looking forward to your progress.

Very nicely done Guy!
Excellent wood effect. Very sharp indeed :)

Excellent work, Guy!!
Jörg

Great start Guy, I'm particularly taken by the clean realistic finish you've achieved on the wood components. This is already shaping up to be another of your spectacular contributions!
Cheers,
Lance
-
Great to see you have made a start with this brilliant kit Guy and what you have achieved so far is superb. the wood colours are excellent and like you, I try to use as much real brass as possible instead of trying to paint a brass colour.
Des.

Thank you all for the kind comments ;)
Just at that point now where the fuselage will be closed up - probably with lashings of superglue and talcum powder to hopefully stop the dreaded 'crack'.
Glass faced instruments are picked out with clear epoxy and belts to add.

Guy, that interior is absolutely magnificent work! The Panel is one of the best I've seen here, sincere compliments, that's simply top notch work all round!

A magnificent instrument panel Guy, one of the best I have ever seen.
Des.

This is my first post here and well... just "WOW".
Lovely detailing on the interior and IP.
I have this kit in the stash - just waiting until my skills can do it justice - so I'll be watching this build with interest.
-
Wow. Your work is just amazing Guy. The level of detail is just outstanding! I really like the scheme you've chosen, the black front end will look great offsetting the rest, and I love the type style of the large numeral 5 - very Art Deco. I look forward to further installments, thanks for sharing!
Jimbo
-
Gorgeous interior work, Guy! I especially like your rendition of the IP.
Cheers,
Bud
-
Thanks chaps :) that's very nice feedback!
Steve - my thoughts exactly on the scheme - it reminded me of Art Deco too when I saw it. I've got masks being made up for the markings.
Howlingdawg - thanks for making your first post here!
I'll post a seat belt shot later today. Fuselage is now 'fused' although I've already dropped my first clanger - literally- on to a hard source and have unstuck the rear fuselage curtain and gunners seat :P so a bit of repair work too.
Ham fisted Harry

Yes, that is just terrific! superb interior, the details look so sharp, great,Guy.
Bye,
Manni

Thanks Manni,
Just a quick shot of the belts. I prefer them over PE.

Seat belts look excellent Guy and the engine has come together beautifully.
Des.

So very pretty. Superb work! I love those belts, the way they sit looks so natural.

Your engine is excellent! Lovely details! The belts are seated perfectly.
RAGIII

Did the spider fall over the engine in just the right place too? The seats and belts look superb and the engine is fantastic - just love the subtle colours. This is a great thread to follow.

Thank you again!
Got the initial paint session done. I think silver dope is quite a solid, even finish on real aircraft. You don't seem to see the same highlighted ribs etc as on other finishes. That said, it needs some variation (artistic licence I guess). I've done a little post shading and that should mellow with further processes.
I'm also going to experiment with some pencil work...
Guy
Ps the lower wing is pretty heavy - for those that have made the kit, is it solid enough on the kit struts? Any reinforcement required?
Also, I'm tempted to attach the mid sections first then the outer wings once done. Is that feasible?

Beautiful paint work Guy.
I build my Bristol quite some time ago and used the kit supplied struts, I have had no issues what so ever, no reinforcing required.

Guy
My experience was as Des's, no problem. I do recall struggling a bit with attaching the fully assembled lower wing though. I'd say if it's possible attaching the middle section first would be easier however checking the alignment could be a factor here as well.
Cheers,
Lance

Quite pleased with my home made map for the cockpit...

Ps thanks Des & Lance, that's reassuring! Just seems such a heavy lump of plastic with the wings on...
-
Just a couple more shots of the interior - extras in place so I can at least call that done. I've also finished off the wings and fuselage.
The masks for the markings came today, so hopefully I'll crack on with those soon.

Very nicely done Guy, the folded map looks excellent in position.
Des.

Thanks Bud & Des,
Thanks too Steve, although that looks a bit beyond my available resources! Ideally, I'd like to attach the the top and bottom mid sections then once fully dry - slide the wings into place - but I'm just wondering if there's enough 'bend' to get the struts in place... or whether I'd damage the structure as they're a very tight fit.
I'll probably just end up doing it as per the instructions, but I always dread locating & gluing all those struts in one go with a big heavy wing swinging about :P
Guy

Morning,
Just getting stuck into the masks & markings...

Outstanding updates! The colors are perfect and the details brilliant! I can't comment on the wing assembly but honestly I have never had a problem when following WNW assembly sequence!
RAGIII
-
I assembled my Brisfit by glueing fuselage to complete lower wings and gluing center section of upper wings. I then rigged the cabanes and tail before the top wing was on. I then put the outer wing panels for top wing, and to be honest they may have fit so tight that i didn't glue them after test fitting. The tight fit and the functional rigging have held them in place for to years now...

Thanks for that,
Roundels done, serial no.s etc next.

Guy,
The "worn" look of the painted markings is a great effect. That and the subtle shading are bringing the silver scheme all together, very real looking. This is going to be a spectacular model, lovely work so far!

Awesome Guy, looking forward to your progress.

Hi Guy
I'm really enjoying this log having just recently found it. Stunning work - so crisp - and a great subject.
Thanks,
Alistair

Wow, very nice! The markings & lettering are so clean, yet look hand painted in scale. I know that sounds weird, but I mean that with the utmost respect, it looks real!
Steve

Thank you to all ;)
I was having a dry run with the undercart and found the axle would bend no matter what I did. So have decided to replace the axle and supports with more brass tubing for rigidity, and thought I may as well carve off the moulded elastic bungee to replace with string to give it a more 3 dimensional appearance...

Thanks Gary,
Finished the undercart - I did find it quite tricky with the numerous little struts. I also managed to snap one of the trailing legs and ended up pinning it as it kept breaking with just glue. It's quite a job to make sure everything is lined up and symmetrical, with the wings at the correct angle. Again, not the kit - just me and my fat fingers ::) so far I've managed to drop the fuselage twice (causing damage twice), snap the undercarriage leg, and cover the top wing with splashes of airbrush reamer (causing a near total sand back and repaint) having just finished it :(
Despite my failings the kit is an absolute gem!

The Tail Feathers are beautiful. Especially the turnbuckles which line up perfectly with the wires!

Thank you Bud, Des & Rick,
So, after a huge modelling battle of epic proportions :P the top wing is finally on ;)
If you'd been in my garage during the battle your vocabulary would have been expanded somewhat. I think I even made up some new expletives :o I definitely need to address this for future builds. I have this heavy wing wavering about trying to locate 12 wafer thin struts - as soon as one is in another pops out, then just as I was getting the last strut in - I knocked the top wing and they all popped out "*€$@£#%"
I've never had a jig before but please, please point me to a thread where a 'how to' method is shown...
In retrospect, I should have fixed the centre section, sanded down the connection tab so it slides in easily then fitted each wing one at a time - there would have been enough flex to pop the struts in one by one...
Guy
Ps please change my forum status to 'novice' Des ???

At least you won the battle in the end Guy! The two WNW I have assembled with multiple struts, the Snipe and Salmson had really sturdy cabanes so I was able to glue the wing on and then just pop in the other eight struts with little difficulty. I also just used this method for the SE5a. The Brisfit cabanes look a little less sturdy so your choice of attaching the 4 inner struts is probably sound although I think it could be done with the outer wings in place. I will try that method if and when I get to my Brisfit ::) Yours looks awesome now that the upper wing is in fitted and the rigging anchored!

Guy,
I just recently posted this photo under Hints and Tips in Silver Wings' article about the Vertigo Jig. This is the AeroClub Biplane Assembly Jig, and it's worth it's weight in gold! Although I believe it's no longer on the Market I've seen them for sale several times recently, once on this Site.
The beauty of this tool is that, once you've set the "sweep" and gap between the bottom and upper wing (from your scale 3 Views) and with most Builds set the cabanes the upper wing can be attached first to the cabanes, then the outer bay struts "popped in", all the while with the upper wing secured to the assembly.

I'll add a few more shots to give you the idea......

Hope this hasn't diverted your Thread; if you can find one of these I'd highly recommend it. The others on the market could fairly easily be enhanced to allow for sweep and clamping of the upper if they don't have that feature. I find the Jig indispensable on Roden and other Models that don't have the fine engineering qualities of the Wingnut kits and also a bonus to the latter projects as well.
Very nice "Biff" now that She's together!
Cheers,

Thanks Rick :)
Lance, that's great. You're certainly not hijacking my thread - that's just what I was after! That looks perfect. If anyone knows where I can get one...
Ps super Brisfit!

I'm sure I read a post by John on Britmodeller last year about him being in the process of bringing out an improved mark of his jig.It could be worth an enquiry on the WW1 sub-forum,just be prepared to wait a little for a reply.I Wouldn't be without mine, makes short work of assembling the most difficult biplanes, and frees both hands for rigging as it holds the model in any position.
Lovely job on the Biff,
Cheers,
Dave.

Thank you Bud, Steve and Dave!
Super helpful. I've had a look at them all and I've just ordered the Vertigo Jig.
Can't believe I haven't looked at getting one before as it's always been a weak point of my builds in the past!!
Looking forward to starting another biplane now ;D

Hi Guy
Just been through your log - absolutely wonderful work. The interior details and engine are brilliant (as it all is!). I've just seen a full size one with the one side left uncovered to show the frames and interior. It is a restored original. A beautiful aircraft - would have liked to take photos but that was not allowed...
