Well, I've decided. My next project is the Gotha GIII in scale 1/72 of Roden. This kit, too, is back in its own right. Little details, lots of work. At first I made the pilote chair.
This is how he looks at Roden.
So times the saw set.
And the result, however, without the seat belts.
Also the bombs racks are not great. Left the original, right with PE parts
(http://www.h-j-bellenbaum.de/go/go4.jpg)
And the whole thing for the instrument panel.
Last but not least for today a look in the painted trunk half.

Until the next update.

Very good improvements, Jürgen. The chair looks nice and the dashboard is terrific.

Wow - that is incredibly small but you manage to make it look big. Having gone from 1:64 to 1:48 and now to 1:32 - I don't think I'll head back to your scale - my eyes wouldn't stand it but my bookshelves would love it. Great work - I look forward to more.

Great start with really positive improvements already. Looking forward to more of the same.

Thank you! ;D
Since the last post I had only time for a little scratchbuilding.
A small quiz. What's this?

No, it's not a bookshelf. 8)

I agree, nice work on the interior!

Nice work! I built this kit a few years ago, and despite my faults it's still one of the models I'm most proud of.
If it is any help, here's my build review on Modelingmadness:
http://modelingmadness.com/review/w1/ger/koeng3.htm
I would do quite a few things both better and different now, but perhaps it's helpful.
Didn't these early Gotha's have a partially linen fuselage? I seem te recall I painted mine half linen, half wood and that the complete wooden fuselage was from the GIV onwards.
As I have Roden GIV somewhere to build I'm following this build with interest! :)

Hello Jeroen,
thank's for the link. I have also a link for you (and all others all so). There a swedisch crazy modelbuilder made an awsome job.

Greetings from Germany, an sorry for my english (it's more denglich then english). But I hope you understand what I mean.

And it goes on. On the pictures of the inside of the hull you can see that there is not much to see in Roden. The ammo drum racks I have already supplemented. What was missing now was the tension. Since one can see from the top as well as from below into the inside of the trunk, something had to happen. And that's what happened.
The wires are made of 0.2 mm (01/64in) copper wire.
And if you now think I'm a little crazy, yes, that's me. ;D ;)
A small problem with the tension wires on the inside, however, I have. I just found this randomly on the Internet this photo. It's from the "Popular Mechanics" Magazine October 1917. ???
(Wikimedia)
As can be seen in the drawing, the lower opening was covered by a tunnel. And, of course, you can not see the tension cables in the rear area. What do you all mean? Should one stay with the original (tunnel), or do without it, so that one can see the tension wires? :-\
Cheers
Jürgen
-
I am not familiar enough with the Gotha series to comment on specifics. In general on my models I like to get Major details correct. If the GIII had a tunnel I would want to include one. But that is me and it is your build!
RAGIII
-
I think the tunnel was introduced on the G.IV
-
That picture also shows the gangway behind the pilot...wasn't it actually on the other side?
Ian
-
@Ian,
you're right. I think they have simply drawn a schematic illustration, with no regard for accuracy.
@all
Meanwhile several model builders have confirmed to me that this tunnel was only available from version IV and later
Then I can leave everything as it is. ;D
Jürgen
-
Very interesting start on that kit. I remember me building it when it was released some 13 or so years ago and it was a challenging but joyful build. I hope, you have fun with it. The tunnel was according to my memory introduced with the IV version and was much taller than portrayed in the drawing.
Best wishes I cross my fingers for you, especially when it comes to the interplane struts as there are so many...

Today I'll show you the last few pictures of the interior before the hull is closed. At the pilots seat I am still not sure whether there still seat belts come or not. Have also attached to the pilot a few instruments and levers. In order that the view from below in the trunk shows a complete tension, a piece of sheet with wires was also inserted on the inner upper side. Otherwise the whole tension of the inner sides is completed, and also the floor has got boards, otherwise the crew would step through the cover. ;)

Last update before Christmas!
In the meantime, the two trunk halves are glued together, and the lower wing part as far as the engine nacelles is also attached.
Since the trunk covering was tied on the bottom, I tried to represent this with PE parts. For that I use railings (1/700, from my shipbuildings) wich I glued on the bottom. In the picture, the zoom setting is quite rough, but in normal view it looks good. ;)
Finally, a comparison of the size of the Gotha and a Fokker E.III. The Gotha is really impressive in 1/72. 8)

I wish you all a peaceful Christmas and a Happy New Year. :)

Hello friends,
time for a new update!
Before I start with the update, I want you to introduce my new project after the Spad XIII (1/24 Merit).
It is the Christmas present of my family. ;D
(http://www.h-j-bellenbaum.de/go/dh.jpg)
I am already looking forward to this building! I will not build it as a whole "stripped down", but only one half. The other half is built "classic". Let's see what will com. ;)
But now to the update.
This time I took the paint.
The wings and the fuselage were brushed in navy green. Where the national symbols came, a bright green was used. The bottom is painted beige and natural wood.
Furthermore, I finished the two engines so far, and painted. Of course there is still the washing.
On one engine nacelle I have the upper flap open, so you can see something from the engine.
Cheers
Jürgen
-
Looks good, Jürgen! I remembered I had some trouble fitting the engines in and made a mess of sanding off the extra louvres Roden provides. Unlike yours mine only had a few and most of the remaining ones had to be sanded away.
I like the colours. Will you be doing the "skull" version?
-
Hi Jeroen,
I had the same problems with this engines. I cut off the holders in the nacelle, and make new ones. Meanwhile, I have already reduced these ventilation slots of Roden. ;)
yes, it will be the "skull" version. ;D But the hardest still comes. Install the spars and then the rigging. ::) :o
Jürgen
-
You have certainly made great progress on your Gotha! Lovely work all around. The green looks outstanding as do the engine nacelles. That DH2 should certainly challenge you and keep you busy for a while!
RAGIII
-
New pictures!
Since the last update I was diligent. The engine nacelles were freed from some ventilation slots, and got a washing. Then I dared to the decals. As is well known, the decals of Roden are the last crap. So here again. I've got the skull on the bow without major problems. Then the anger went off. The side lettering has been divided into individual parts. On the one hand I had nine fragments at the end. Of course, a silver could not be prevented despite the use of Future and Decal medium. In order to mitigate the damage, I then worked on the silvery surfaces with my special brush (a single hair). After the decals were dried and sealed, the engine nacelles and the lower wings were glued to the fuselage. Now everything has to dry well, and then it starts with the spars.

I can relate to those decals as well, it appears the flat Roden ones are worse than the gloss ones. They aren't the best, too, but at least don't fall apart. I coated them with Dutch equivalent Future and they held long enough to get them on the model, mostly... I also had to touch up.
I built the G.II and may have the remaining G.III decals, if you like a re-try I can mail them to you if you want?
I look forward to your approach for getting the top wing on!
Happy 2017,
Jeroen
-
Hi Jeroen,
thanks for your offer, but no longer necessary. The decals are so far still quite good. 8)
I wish you also a happy 2017
Jürgen
-
And as in the old year, it continues in the new year.
This time, the spars were on.
First, I glued the spars to the lower wing halves and allowed to dry well. During the dry phase, I reworked the engine nacelles again. The washing was just too strong.
Now came the most difficult part. Place the upper wing on the spars. According to the plan, I had glued the upper wing of the three parts together. I should not have done that. Since the spars are very thin and therefore wobbly, I simply could not manage to align the upper bearing surface. The gluing was not to be thought of. Thereupon I quickly disassembled the wing. With the individual parts it went quite well. I finally glued the middle piece with the two half-wings, and inserted the last spars. Now it's time to wait until everything is well dried, and then go on with the rigging.

Coming together very nicely Jürgen, the skull decal looks very impressive.
Des.
-
Very nice, love what you have accomplished so far. Are you using the kit decals? Cheers
-
@krow113,
the "painting" over the windows is liquid mask. If you use that, you can paint or airbrush over these parts, and when finished pull it off like a film.
@Juan,
yes, these are the (damn) original decals. In Germany, we say "ab in die Tonne damit". Means, this parts are for the garbage can. ;D
@all,
I am glad you enjoyed it so far. Thank you!
Cheers
-
Hi Jürgen, you are to be commended for using the "Damn" kit decals, I know some of the Roden decals are meant for the garbage can. Really enjoy what you have done and look forward to your progress. :D
-
Nice Gotha with an interesting scheme. Looking forward what's coming up next.
Manni
-
And now begins the most difficult part, at least for me. The rigging! The Gotha does not have just a few tension wires, and each wire individually, would be a "never ending story". There are three of Roden's plans, but they are very confusing, and therefore hard to use. So I evaluated all the available images, and created my own plan. Here are two pictures of the new plan.
I use knitting in elastic from Prym for the tension wires. Sorry WNW, but your EZ-Line is simply too expensive for me. Especially since EZ-Line is nothing else but the material of Prym. As you can see from my plan, a majority of the main span wires are produced on a half of the span with only two tension wires. It's a little bit tricky to work with a long wire, but it works! Here I can present you my rigging work until now. The silver of the wires I did with Rub 'N' Buff. Some of you may know the stuff. The turnbuckles on the wires are still coming. Since I'm still superior how I manage this. At 1/72 is not quite easy, without which it looks bad.
I hope you like my work on the tension. It is, after all, the first time I have dared to do such a complicated job. ;)
Will be continued
Jürgen
-
Excellent progress! You have done a great job of getting those decals in place and they look terrific, especially the Skull! The rigging is top notch!
RAGIII
-
Nice work, the wires all look nice and taut from here!
Ian
-
Looking good! :) If I remember i used 0,08mm fishing line on mine to "pull" the wings into more dehidral since they seemed to flop as much as a birds. It's been a few years since I did mine, but the dehidral is still there -although when I pick it up by it's nose, some lines still go slack.
Nice work, I went for the wood/linen G.II, but seeing this green one with the skull kind of gets me thinking of doing another!
Jeroen
-
Finally, I got the main rigging. For those interested, there have been 2 meters of material processed so far. Furthermore, I have attached the chassis and the missing ailerons and elevators. Next action will then be the control cables, and other little parts. But I'll be back in the next update.

Very nice .
Well done Jürgen .

Well done on the rigging - you must have had to be very careful and patient! Looks great,

Hello everybody,
slowly but surely it goes to the end.
First, I installed the control cables. Since these must be much thinner than the tension wires, I used 0.05 millimeters of copper wire for this purpose. They were fixed with dilute wood glue. Despite the magnifying glass it was not easy. In addition, the propellers were painted in a wood tone, and the propeller hub improved with an etching part. The side guards on the fuselage near the propellers are also made of etched parts. At the end of this update a shot from above with the additional tank.
Next, it will go to the next, and probably last update with the MG's and still missing parts. Then the Gotha is only covered with a matt clear coat, and that should have been it.
Greetings from old Germany
Jürgen

This one is coming together nicely. Excellent results!
RAGIII

Today there is the last update for this building report.
I start with the machine guns. The first two photos show the original Roden MG's.
There are a few details, but there is still a lot to improve. First I replaced the magazine with etching parts. Furthermore, the barrel was cut off and replaced by an etched part with an inner 0.6 mm brass tube. A crosshair was added to the barrel. The Parabellum MG also looks like a Parabellum MG. The MG was lacquered with Vallejo Black Metallic and wood brown.
Let us take the last two pictures. On the underside the missing bombs were added. Originally, I also wanted to use some etching parts here, but unfortunately I have broken the assembly. And since some of them are less than a millimeter in size, it was impossible to think of a repair.
Well friends, so the Gotha is finished. Soon there will be the Rollout in the gallery.
Thank you for your interest in this building report, and up to the next plane, then something bigger. Spad S.XIII in 1/24 (Merit) ;D
