Dodgy Special Hobby kit. I can't fault Special Hobby on their choice of subjects, but their execution leaves something to be desired.

I can see from the photos that the oil pulsater tube/dome is way too big and will need to be replaced.
Does any one have a sure fire way of making these? I made this one by heating a clear chewing gum blister package and sticking a straight pin in it. the frosty appearance at the base is caused by the white glue that I used to attach it still being quite wet when I took the photos.

Outstanding beginnings, Rob. Excellent wood grain and the cockpit looks fantastic.
Cheers,
Bud

Thanks Bud. The kit is turning out to be more of a challenge than I anticipated (a recurring theme in my model building pursuits). I appreciate the encouragement.

Keep going, Rob! I'm pulling for ya!! ;)

I'm rooting for you also. :)
I hope that you have better luck with that poorly enginered kit than I had with it .
Mounting the wing acurately can a real challange for one thing.
-
You have made an excellent start Rob, the cockpit looks very good with really nice wood grain, looking forward to seeing your next update.

Youre making it special. Nice work!!!

looking quite nice so far. i make oil pulsator glass from clear sprue. heat stretch the sprue like one normally would. i then cut off with cutter the segment with the proper diameter. then i sand the cut into a rounded end. i use finer and finer grades up to 12000. this polishes it to a sheen. afterward cut the appropriate length with a razor saw and attach to model. i got the sanding pads from micro mark. but you can also get sanding sticks with this fine grade. also the emory board type nail buffer/polishers from the drug store do the same thing.
-
Nice work Rob, the seat looks great and you've got a great wood effect for your cockpit.

Thanks for the comments, encouragement, and advice. I'm on vacation this week and plan to spend some quality time at the model desk. Hopefully, I'll have some more progress photos by the end of the week.
-
Any updates? :)
-
I have the engine finished, the fuselage closed up, and the empenage attached. I am in the middle of cleaning up seams restoring surface details. I'll try to get some photos up shortly.

The battle continues. I am slowly gaining the upper hand:

Thanks for the encouragement and comments. Masking and airbrushing the French five color camouflage must be one of modeling's more onerous tasks. I made it even more difficult by misreading the original French in the camouflage pattern drawing color key in the Windsock Mini datafile and transposing the two greens. I didn't catch the mistake until after I painted the black 'footprint' on the wing and the lack of contrast between the black and the dark green looked distinctly odd. More masking and airbrushing ensued.

Rob,
Outstanding progress and choice of subject my old friend. Keep up the grand fight you've the upper hand.

Almost finished. Just a few fiddly bits to add and some paint touch ups left. I hope to have it finished by next weekend.

Beautiful! :)
That is about how far I got on my A1 (minus LG) before I accidentally destroyed it.

Question:
How did you manage to line up and mount the wig so evedently perfect?
Did you use a jig?
-
Joe,
Attaching the wing on this model was the stiffest modeling challenge I have faced. I did not use a jig, but I had to reposition all of the strut mounting locations on both the wing and the fuselage. I also replaced some of the struts and modified the others. None of the struts fit, being either too long or too short. The biggest problem is that the cabane struts should angle in towards the fuselage center line as they go up to the wing. The kit has the strut locations on the fuselage angle away from the fuselage center line as they go up to the wing. I had to file grooves in the upper fuselage at the back/inside toward the fuselage center line of the cabane struts so I would have clearance to attach them at the correct angle. Once I figured that out I managed to get the wing on with only the usual amount of nail biting and hair pulling. I rate the kit as an average terrible.

We need WNW to tackle the A1. :)

Truly outstanding work, Rob! You've done a brilliant job getting the wing on. One would never know that you'd suffered such tribulations. It looks perfect.
Cheers,
Bud

Wow... quite an amazing build model.
The camo looks great. One of the best, if not the best Parasol that i've seen. Perfect!
Congrats.
