Evening,
After my 1/72 Spad project was rather curtailed by a falling Dremel drill..
I've been sent 3 Eduard 1/48th kits by the magazine :D but I can't quite decide on which to start first? I'm leaning towards the Fokker having just (nearly) done a Spad (although the Spad in this scale is absolutely lovely); and having built the D.III before (albeit a long time ago). Although I would have to change the Fokker colour scheme as the box offering wouldn't be my choice. I think I'd go for a Aviattic 'cookie' cut set of lozenge and a separate decal sheet (any recommendations?).
All 3 kits look very nicely done...

I quite like the Red D.III, but would require surgery to the fuselage to display the cowlings off as depicted.
So which one? Nice to have a choice I guess!
I'm starting another type rating course at work onto the 777 in the new year, so that will wipe out about 3 months of modelling time, so I'll see how I go on getting these finished, but will post if and when able :D
Any input/ tips/ thoughts most welcome.

All three are excellent kits, but the Eduard SPAD is something special. It would take the longest to build due to the rigging. The Fokker would be the quickest and easiest. Like you said, you would have to scratch build some framing for the engine compartment if you chose the red D.III. Up to you, mate.
Cheers,
Bud
-
Thanks Bud,
Yep, the Spad does look a bit special, but I think the quick, easy build appeals. So I reckon it's the Fokker.
Probably a daft question, but the Aviattic lozenge give you two options - alb/oaw or Fokker. Not sure which one I've got in the box? What's the difference in terms of wing lozenge? Which should I get?
Thanks
Guy
-
Not a daft question at all, Guy. According to Greg Van Wyngarden's Osprey book on Jasta 18 and according to the instructions in your kit, von Büren's Fokker was Albatros built. Eduard gives you instructions on how to modify the cowling specific to von Büren's bus. As far as the Aviattic decals go, I would go with one of the OAW/Albatros sets. As to which one, I can't tell you since I've been unable to find a clear photo showing the undersides of his wings, so I suppose the choice is yours. I would look at the WNW instructions on the Alb planes since their research is generally pretty good. Get the Osprey book if you can. There is a good photo of von Büren and his plane on page 99 showing what appears to be a repair to the top wing center section with light colored rib tapes. Intriguing.
Cheers,
Bud

Looking forward to your DVII build! As for the Albatros when you do it I would Love to see the Voss bird 8) Always has been a favorite of mine!

Thanks for the info Bud,
I've seen a set of decals I really like, but these along with the Aviattic lozenge will set me back £28 - or I make the box art one for £0... will have to have a think. Seems a bit extravagant but I know I want to make this other scheme ???
Hi Rick, thanks, it's in the pipeline.
Will change the title of the thread to something more appropriate for a Fokker build!

So,
Started the Fokker this morning and surprisingly, I've got the fuselage closed up already!
I know it's not a race, but I was just enjoying myself and it seemed to go very quickly...
Really super kit, great detail in this scale and the fit is spot on so far. The only tricky bit has been the seat frame - nothing wrong with it - just fiddly.
Thanks for looking in.

Thanks guys,
Yep, it's all out of the box - the coloured PE is a real boon.. adds loads of lovely detail - feels like cheating really.
Just have to decide if I'm going to fork out my £28 on a few stickers ??? If you like the colour schemes provided, this is a great value package, the box is bursting with extras.

A nice and clean build!

Awesome start (quick too, so we should see it finished by tomorrow ;D, just kidding). Looking forward to your progress.

Hello,
Been away all week but had time yesterday to press on a little. I've chosen a scheme that required the stunning Aviattic Lozenge but not a separate decal set - it's from one of the Wingnut additional decal sheets for the D.VII...
(http://i882.photobucket.com/albums/ac29/Gisbod/Fokker%20D7%201%2048/4DBA656F-0AC0-481D-9D73-37A6DD62C6CA.jpeg) (http://s882.photobucket.com/user/Gisbod/media/Fokker%20D7%201%2048/4DBA656F-0AC0-481D-9D73-37A6DD62C6CA.jpeg.html)
I like the colours and it's achieveable with the existing kit decals.
To that end, I've started painting and, not having actually used the Aviattic Lozenge before (yes, really), it's a bit experimental in terms of pre shading, but I wanted a subtle look so have gone with a pastel blue and will have to wait until the decals are on to see if it works or not...

The fuselage has a couple more stages to go...

Wings are glossed up now, so hoping to get the Lozenge on later :)

Knowing the qualities of the Aviattic Lozenge your pre shading should look stunning once the decals are applied! Terrific job!
RAGIII

Evening,
After racing ahead, it then went very slowly! I've got the Lozenge on and the main painting done. The Aviattic Lozenge is gorgeous - looks totally real. Although for some reason I've lost a bit of impetus and I'm struggling to push forward. No idea why although I've suddenly got the notion I really want to build a DH9... or Brisfit or RE8 (if I could get hold of one). Mad really as I've been promised a Camel as soon as they're out. I really ought to wait for that.
Has anyone has any opinions on those kits?

Yeah, that's all looking very fine Guy!
Of those PC-10 planes -- IIRC Des is of the opinion that the Brisfit is one of the very best WNW kits...

Beautiful work on the lozenge and the fuselage painting, this is shaping up to be a real stunner.
I have built all three kits you mention and as Bo has said the Bristol, in my opinion, is their best kit ever.
Des.

Thanks,
That's interesting. Annoyingly, I had a Brisfit and sold it a year ago! I'll have to have a think. I quite liked the DH.9 as there doesn't seem to be so many of those made - there are Ninacks & Brisfits everywhere, but I'll see what I can get hold of...

Great choice of schemes, Guy, and the work you did with the lozenge is fantastic! I assume you used one of the Aviattic cookie cutter sheets, but it looks like you added rib tapes, in which case, I can understand why your enthusiasm may have diminished. I usually loose momentum when I do rib tapes. I've got a pair of Halberstadts that have be stalled at that stage for almost 3 years. Yeah, give me PC10 any time.
Cheers,
Bud

Oh yes: Ribtapes AND rigging... No, I don't like it neither... But riptapes are in fact the more annoying thing >:(
Best wishes for finishing that beautiful model

Thanks Borsos :)

Bud
Hi Bud, yes, cookie cut the only one I can face, but no extra rib tapes - I masked the rib tapes though and as it was the 'linen tapes' set they stand out (white undercoat). The kit's lovely, I just seem to struggle to finish anything lately... ::)
Guy

Beautifully done Guy, the Lozenge work is "super-clean". Like Bud I regard rib tapes as less then fun; I enjoy rigging but somehow the taping gets "real old real fast"!
........ and FWIW, the WNW Brisfit is also my favorite Kit of all time, you should really grab one before they hit the heights of the OOP silliness scale!
Cheers,
Lance

Great work Guy, you can push through and get this beauty finished, she is really looking good.
-
Hello all,
Off topic really, but in a weak moment I went ahead and ordered another WNW - first time with Weta.
I've taken your advice Des & Lance - the Brisfit - but the post war version... I've also ordered the HGW fabric belts and the Barracuda wicker seats. Silly really as I'll be getting the Camel shortly, but once I get a bee in my bonnet...

Apologies for further lack of progress!
Still nothing further to show but wanted to vent off about a couple of setbacks...
Firstly, the dreaded fuselage 'seam' has once again come back to haunt me... this has been a recurring theme in recent models - one that I never used to have and I'm wondering if it's some chemical reaction from something I'm using? The seam starts off as perfect - not a hint of there ever been a join there at all - to some point later in the build magically reappearing. It wasn't the paint, but potentially could have been the varnish? Although it was only a water based Humbrol? It's super annoying as it doesn't appear until all the various layers of effects have been finished making it very hard to fix without major cosmetic trickery.
I noted in Prze's Brisfit build he had the same using superglue- I used a standard Humbrol plastic glue having had the issue before with superglue/ standard glue & liquid glues.. I remember Bo telling me about chamfering the edges which I must confess I hadn't done - although, surely this just makes a wider glue joint? Any thoughts out there and of stopping this on future builds?
Secondly, a schoolboy error on my part - somehow, I've managed to glue the tail plane upside down! Yes, I know.... it's not the end of the world, but the rigging holes are now in the wrong place :P it's a mystery how it happened as I was well aware of it having a correct way up prior to fitting - just another senile moment ???
Oh dear, modelling detention for me
Guy
-
+1 on the seam issue. I tend to use Revell Contacta glue which is a bit thicker than Tamiya Extra thin. It it takes longer to dry. Since we got kids my modelling time has diminished so much my glued parts are left untouched much longer, weeks somtimes, -and indeed, no ghost-seams popping up much later in the build! It may be the only advantage of not having a lot of modelling time...
I use mostly CA glue (with talcum powder and some pigments so you can see where it is) as filler and if I do use parts sooner it seems to minimize the issue, especially on bare metal aircraft like the MiG-17 I'm also somewhat working on. It is also much harder so easier to rescibe, but not much of that is usually happening on WWI aircraft ;-)
One other thing I noticed, Extra Thin is great stuff, but don't use too much on not-too well fitting areas, as it does not "fill" as much as thicker glues do, and causes sunken seams -often after weeks when it may be too late!
Good luck!
Jeroen

Glad I am not the only one with recurring seam issues. Both of my DR1 builds have suffered. I have fixed the F1 twice now!

Have been away and only just caught up with this one. Terrific work on the lozenge, tapes and painting, but if you think these are a pain in your scale try them in 1/72!
Keep up the good work - this is going fine.
