In my generation of young Canadian boys there were two sources of undying hero worship: the great Ice Hockey players of the day and William Avery "Billy" Bishop who was credited with 72 enemy aircraft downed in the Great War of 1914 to 1918. His legendary exploits undoubtedly had a lot of influence on my determination to be a Fighter Pilot when I grew up, unchanged since it's beginnings when I was six years old and started building models. When I finally achieved my ambition I was tagged with the Callsign "Bishop" and carried it proudly throughout my service. Having a model of Bishop's Nieuport in which he scored over one half of his victories is a must for this Modeller!
The Hobby Craft Canada Kit is a very basic and simply presented version of the aircraft although the basics including generally accurate dimensions are all there. I used a lot of After market components on this build including the MasterCaster's resin cockpit and also their cowling and wheel set, a few bits from Tom's Model Works Brass PE Set, and Gaspatch Lewis Gun. There was also some Scratch Building required to bring the Kit up to an acceptable standard.
Following are a dozen or so photos of the finished product. I have the Model Cellar 54mm figure of Bishop kindly gifted by Paul, the Company owner and, never having done figures, will have to do some practicing before tackling that. Never fear, Paul, your gesture is appreciated and the Bishop Figure will get done!

An enjoyable Build, not without it's occasional setback, but overall the kit is worth building. I have several of the Hobby Craft Camels in my stash and , based on this Kit, will definitely build them some day in the future.

Masterful job Lance. What a beautiful rendering of Billy Bishop's Nieuport! I hope to build my kit up this nice someday. Thanks for showing me how. ;) Very well done indeed!
Best regards,

Thanks so very much Bob. It'd good to hear from you again, you've become so quiet of late I was concerned you'd run off to model Fantasy Figures or Hot Rods! Good luck when you get around to yours, and Billy would be pleased to see another Modeller doing his "Grid"!

Excellent modeling Lance. And with a striking background story! Billy Bishop would be proud of it! Congratulations on a spectacular project!

Thank you Prze, coming from a Modeller of your superb skills that means a great deal to me!

Thanks Terri and Greg, great to have you look in and comment since you both welcomed me to another Forum and encouraged me years back when I got back into WWI Aircraft Models. The second most enjoyable part of being in the "group" is the shared modelling thoughts and experiences, the first and foremost is the great friends you make! :) 8)

Outstanding workmanship Lance. Followed this build and your finished product is a mini masterpiece. Congrats

Lance,
Following this build was inspirational to say the least. Knowing what you started with and seeing the results really emphasizes your skills. Beautiful construction, painting, weathering, and especially detailing!

That's a nice tale Lance and as fine a reason as any to build this version.
These new photos really accent all the work you've put in - a superb result all round :)
...and next?

Thanks for looking and commenting Tug.
I've cleaned up the work bench/desk and have the Wingnuts Hansa Brandenburg W.12 I'd barely started for the Diorama Group Build spread all over it already. I'm also on the cusp of ordering some After Market bits for a Hasegawa Boeing F4B I'd really like to do for a complete change of pace; I've always really liked the "Yellow Wings" period and aircraft of the USN and the Kit, along with the matching P-12 and P-26 is a classic. Another option, remote at this time, is a 1:72 Lockheed Neptune, a relic I trained on in the early 60's.
Like all of us I guess, so much to do, so little time!

Lance

I am late in adding my compliments, but they're nevertheless meat honestly: a great and inspirational build that made me want to start a Nieuport immediately. I love your work to improve that mediocre kit that turned out as a real jewel and I'll take it as a guideline when it comes to my Nieuport 17.
Best wishes

Brilliant Lance,
And great photos too!

Thanks Bud, really appreciated!
By coincidence I attended our local IPMS Chapter meeting yesterday and, one of the Members, James Knaus from this Forum as well, brought along an "extra" Amodel Nieuport 16 he happened to have...... Needless to say it's now safely stashed here, and by coincidence I happen to have a great set of Kiwi Decals for a Lafayette Ni.11............ Who was it said you can never have too many "Noops"?!

Well, I know I've said it. Many times. And I'm sure others have said it, as well. It's such an elegant little bugger.

me too, and not just once :)

It is an elegant design, and a "must have" subject. I can think of four, possibly five that I hope to have in the collection. 8)

You don't need me to chime in, Lance ;) You already have my respect and that isn't about to change anytime this century.
Well done!

That's a great build. You've really done it justice as it isn't the best kit out there. Just plain lovely.

Lance,
Haven't visited in a few days and I'm Just seeing this now...
WOW, the completed build looks GREAT!! The wood effect on the prop is fantastic, and I especially like the paint chipping on the cowling.
ok, I'll hold you to it - can't wait to see the Bishop figure next to it =) maybe on a little ground work? =)).

Paul,
