Title: Revell 1/48 Fokker Dr 1 (Eduard) Speedbuild...
Post by: Monty on November 14, 2016, 02:36:12 AM
We decide at our Club meetings what the next "Theme" or Group build is going to be, and usually I can search amongst some old models and find something appropriate, but the theme for December is "Red and White" (Blame the holidays and a certain sweet beverage manufacturer) and I had nothing suitable... so I decided to quickly get something together. Please note this is no great super-detailed build with lots of PE and fine wires, just an out-of-the-box colourful fun build! Hopefully I can beat the deadline...

So here's the kit, plastic only!

I know there is Eduard PE etc, but I simply don't have time for that. Compromises will be made, and this kit has been made many times before on the site in great detail... I did look at the builds and they are very helpful.

So a start to the Cockpit floor and a few details: the decal for the compass came from the spares box...

Then the seat and fabric bulkhead, my interpretation of colours! The seat belts are metal from wine bottle cork wrappings... and some scrap buckles....

That's a wee it inverted! Then the cockpit sides were painted and the kit supplied frames installed... The plywood V formers were wood effect, and the fabric areas a neutral colour, then some stretched sprue rigging (Quick, cheap and cheerful) and I lost the map bag... too bad...

Progress has been made... Enjoy your modelling!

Marc

Hi Toby! Hi Rick! Thanks for following and the encouragement. I got the sub-assemblies into the fuselage halves... Ammo boxes too wide? Just cut off the end, no-one will see... Add a few random wires to busy it up...

Hi Gregory, Hi Rick and Terri, it's just great getting the encouragement! Well, the fuselage halves are together, always a big step forward. Then the putty is in the upper fuselage seam (rear deck) as the joint is far from good. This is what it looks like when the putty is sanded down, but the seam line still shows! I will have to resort to surface primer... I also lost the rear transverse support bar for the machine gun mounts - so here is my make-shift one from sprue - (I always loose something - war is hell) but at least I can make it fit well...

Back to the bench!

Looks great Marc, this kit goes together well with no real snags I found, apart from the self-induced ones I always make!!

Hi Bud, Hi Ian! Thank you both for checking in! I'm finding this a strangely enjoyable build - in spite of a few self-induced errors! I seem to have the same problems, Ian! But the new support for the machine guns is working well so I turned my attention to the underside of the fuselage where that area in front of the lowest wing is kind of featureless... well, it's even worse after filling and sanding flat! On the real aircraft there is a removable hatch there and positions for the front landing gear leg placement, and the Eduard kit has a nice piece of PE replicating that, but I don't have that kit... so I will carry on regardless (Was that a British movie?) and fudge it - lots of weathering will disguise things anyway! There is a plastic part to replicate the stitching behind the wing, it fits in the groove...

All The Best,

Marc

It's great to get so much encouragement when the pressure is on! Thank you Stephen, Gregory, Rick and Terri! So I dived in and got the middle wing on just as the instructions suggest - I think this is the best way to go. At the same time I got the tailplane on and lined up... It all fits really well... compliments to Eduard... A smear of putty at the front edge of the tailplane helps, but don't completely eradicate the joint, it's there on the real plane...

I also added the strip of lacing underneath the fuselage....

You can see how the putty needed some attention with surface primer too!

Marc

Thanks for checking in again Terri! Well, the next wing to go on was the lower wing, and with some clever engineering and moulding works much like the original... just make absolutely sure it fits right in the large slot as intended! And also that it's absolutely parallel to the middle wing and simply ignore the struts etc at this stage...

Then when the glue is dry turn it over and insert the interplane struts through the middle wing into the lower wing... to my suprise they just slid in with scarcely any help... just a tiny sandind here and there... I checked the alignment was all OK and added the top wing, ignoring the centre-section struts at this stage...

And that's how quick it was, a real treat! I've started cleaning up the interplane struts and the axle wing too... I can't waste time!

Marc

Hi Rick! Thank You for the good vibes! And yes, progress has been made... I tackled the centre section struts between the fuselage and the upper wing: Only the small pips on the connecting bar along the top needed the mould line removed and a bit of judicious thinning, and to my surprise everything fitted, Just like that! Nice moulding... I started on the undercarriage struts, I decided to take a leap of faith and clean them up and atatch them in the right place (following the instructions) more or less at the right angles (following the Windsock plans) and wait for them to set hard before progressing further...

So this is where e are, not much visual progress but I'm happy...

Marc

Looking great. Make sure your gear legs are seated ALL of the way down in the axle wing. If not they can be a tad long. The only flaw of this kit.

Your build makes me to do it even more ;)
Title: Re: Revell 1/48 Fokker Dr 1 (Eduard) Speedbuild...
Post by: Monty on November 24, 2016, 04:38:31 AM
Hi Rick! Yes, you are quite right - I realized early on that the mould line down the struts needed removing, and this applied to the tips as well! After doing this, the struts still needed a bit of persuasion to seat properly - I judged the length from the Windsock plans using "Eyeball Mk 1!" Now the position of the undercarriage struts mounting to the fuselage needs some modification: Firstly, ignore the instructions! They would have you drill 4 holes - not a good idea! The rear struts have a kink in them and fit in the slot between the leading edge of the lower wing and the fuselage - just look 2 photos up to see this slot- and there is a groove in the fuselage side that holds the strut exactly! Nice one, Eduard. Then the front struts don't quite seem to match up to the forward corners of the fuselage... well, they shouldn't. The mounting place for them is about 0,5mm rearwards from the firewall and 0,5mm in from the edge of the fuselage... Interestingly, the PE from Eduard has the mounting hole exact... I know you now have a "butt" joint with no locating hole, but just glue it and all will be well!

Hi Xmald, sometimes it's just good to build a kit and not stress about the finer details... Thanks for checking in!

Well, here is the undercarriage glued in, the engine and wheels are just dry fitted for the "pose" shot!

Thanks for the encouragement, Terri! I realise that not everyone would assemble to this stage before painting, but my intended colour scheme is quite simple and as long as I can get the finish between the wings OK, it should save a lot of time!
Eek! Suddenly everything went dark!

I think it is imperative with this brightly coloured translucent plastic to "kill" the colour and stop the red  light reflection coming through, and so I use a darker undercoat and make sure it's fairly dense - but I tried to keep it as thin as possible in order not to obscure detail - here I used Tamiya Acrylic XF-24 Dark grey thinned 40% with their thinners and 4 dashes(!!) of X-22 the gloss clear to get it smooth... seems to work! I just need to let it dry and on to the white!

Marc

Now I know what a quick build means!!! This looks very like the old Airfix Dr 1 of 1950's vintage but in a larger scale and infinitely better! This is going to look super when finished - regardless of speed of construction.

Hi Bud, Filip and Stephen! Thank You for checking in! Yes, it does take the stress off to just build out-of-the-box, and it's really fun to see constant progress taking place on the bench! Eduard have created a honey of a kit here, equally good with a whole lot of PE and extras (we have seen some great ones on the site) or just built from the plastic parts... Well, the next step was the white (remember it's a red and white group build, and the white will serve as a great undercoat for the red) so I mixed some Tamiya acrylic  X-1 gloss white with some XF-1 flat white, added a tad of X-22 clear and 40% thinners and sprayed it - mostly thicker in the areas that should be white and a thin coat in the areas that are due to be red. I'm not sure it looks OK - the white is a bit grey and patchy - I will have to think about this one...

Hi Juan, Hi Terri, Thanks for the kind words, but the white turned out to be a very thin coat, it just rubbed off easily and was really patchy when dry, so I just recoated as you see below!
Hi Rick, this build is nowhere near the quality of your work! It's mainly fun and some compromises, but Thank You for the encouragement!

Hi Juan, Hi Rick, Thank You for those comments! Time is the enemy - this needs to be finished by Friday! So on with the masking! Fortunately it's not too complicated, with the rear fuselage and tail in white, I masked the division line round the rear fuselage carefully with Tamiya masking tape, my favourite, then used paper to construct a bag around the delicate tail surfaces! It didn't take too long... Then I used Tamiya Masking tape to do the white backgrounds to the crosses on the upper and lower wing... Sorry about the quality of the photo, I finished this late at night...

And on with the red! Here I used Tamiya acrylic gloss red, just well thinned... One coat will have to do, I'm running out of time... I know the underside could be blue with natural linen colour background to the crosses, but I chose to go with colours similar to Lt Raben's other Tripe with red undersurfaces and white backgrounds... mea culpa! No evidence of this really exists...

We need to let that dry now...

Hi Juan, Stephen, Manni, Lance and Rick! Thank You All for the great comments and encouragement! Yes, it's curiously liberating just to build and not get obsessed by the finer details or techniques - just to use what's in the box and forge ahead every day! It has been fun - and the response from the great Modellers on the site has helped - please forgive my errors! I think every modeller should try one of these once in a while...

Well, on with the build, the masking came off and I meant to take a photo but I forgot... Then I examined the finer details of the red and white masking... unfortunately, just at the leading edges of the upper wing white square and the leading edge of the lower wing leading edge the division between the red and white looked a bit rough... it took me a while to work out what had gone wrong, and t was an error way back... The leading edge of every wing has a mould separation line and I was careful to remove that, but due to the (red) transparent plastic and my inattention I didn't realize the underlying plastic near this mould line was a bit rough... I should have examined it with some magnification and simply fixed it by an application of surface primer and a sanding down with some very fine sand-paper, say 1000 grit... that would have cured it and made the paint soo much smoother... Well, I won't lose sleep over it, the first place where paint (or dope) wears or chips on a real aeroplane is the leading edge of the wing, built in weathering!
Then straight on to the decals... usually I will coat with gloss acrylic Tamiya then wait til it hardens properly then apply decals but time is running away from me! So decals go straight onto the relatively glossy paint... should be OK, says Marc crossing his fingers! My good friend Tony Dill (AKA the Great Dillini ... long story) gave me some decals for Lt Weiss's Tripe... and the crosses were perfect for this! The only slight problem was the white border to the upper and lower wing crosses, no problem! Just ignore! It all seemed to work OK... remember, if you catch a glimpse of that white border, remember these crosses were modified, over-painted and touched up a few times at this stage of the war!

So this is where we are, just one modelling session, but the colours are starting to pop!

Regards,
Marc

Hi Przemo! Thank you for watching! I'm pretty sure your 1/72 Dr1 will put my bigger one to shame! But the Raben colour schemes are great - I will definitely do a few more - DVII hopefully! We will miss you on Friday, Keep Well!
Hi Terri, Thank You for the kind comments ... not a patch on your great models though!
Hi Bud! It is a relatively easy subject with a colour sceme that has crossed my mind, so just a few weeks is really all it took... but I have made a few compromises - That's life! Thank You for the kind comments!
Rick, just think that if we made a model every two months we would have 6 by the end of the year! I very rarely manage that many these days... But Thank You for your support - it really helps!
Hi Gregory, Thank You too for checking in! Yes, this particular scheme is really attractive, the very similar scheme with the Raven that Przemo is going to do is even prettier...

Well, time marches on... I had to put on a coat of Tamiya Clear Acrylic Gloss with a touch of their Matting Agent in to seal everything in... it is less glossy, but still shines a lot... this looks OK to me...

Herewith another "pose" shot (Just for Terri ) with components dry-fiitted and taken in natural light.. the colours are close.. Then I will do all the detail painting, the guns, rigging and tail and wing skids etc...

I've been following along on your Dr. 1 build and agree with all the preceding comments.  It's going along very nicely and the Raben plane is always an interesting subject.  Aside from a few minor niggles, the Eduard 1/48 triplanes are just such nice subjects and always satisfying to build.

Your speedbuild is continuing to look great! I think you have nailed the finish!

Thank You Jeroen, Juan, Tug, Gabe and Rick for checking in! Yes, this has been a fortuitous choice of build to do, the first time I have done it, and it does go together well with few problems... The Raben Triplanes are just so pretty, I'm glad I chose one... Now on to the finer details, and these prove to be quite acceptable... I have no PE for this kit so we will rely on the plastic parts! Here is a collection of most of the details needing some attention... (Remember the old saying? The Devil is in the details?) I have some of the basic wood tones on, but now we need to do the metallics...

This build is giving me some great pleasure still...

Thank You, Terri, for your constant encouragement! It is appreciated... Well, did I finish in time... Ye-es, if you overlook the nasty painting of the tyres (now hopefully hidden under some weathering), and I still need to add the control wires, but I will get there! To my surprise the prop turns, together with the rotary engine, good model engineering, Eduard! The finish may be too shiny and clean for some, but this is as it appears in the only known photograph of the real machine... so this is as it appears now...

I was thinking of doing something similar with the CSM Dolphin, I know there are great builds of this kit on the site, but I'd like to know if it's a straightforward build out of the box, any interest? I also wondered if we all managed a build in a month, we could each do 12 a year! Lots and Lots!

Marc

Fantastic. Almost a Blitzbau in the speed you built it. Love the wood grain effect you've achieved. Top Fokkering  ;)

That was a quick build! Still first class though and very interesting to follow.
